In the Evening (Live & Studio) [Led Zeppelin Reaction] South Bound Saurez - In Through the Out Door

- This is Dev's first time hearing In Through the Out Door, Led Zeppelin's final studio album, which begins with In the Evening and South Bound Saurez. (Or is it Suarez?) Our reaction includes a live version (Detroit) of In the Evening from the Jimmy Page & Robert Plant tour of 1995.
This is Dev's first time listening to these songs. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.

Bonzo died in 1980. And now Jimmy is 80 years old. Who would of thought that could of happened!! Bonzo is just incredible on this album, too bad it was his last go with with Zep
best album they did, and my favorite starts it
Led Zeppelin's 1979 Knebworth live version of "In the Evening" was very cool and, of course, Bonham and Jones were there. ;) I recommend giving it a watch if you haven't already.
Plan on doing most/all of Knebworth concert at some point
@@MusicforBusyPeople Great! Looking forward to that. Studio version is excellent, as well.
This album came out when I was in high school and I remember thinking it wasn't as hard as the earlier stuff but as time has gone by, I believe this album is a masterpiece. Southbound Suarez is one of my favorite songs. It's almost like they're channeling early Elvis or something but they're still uniquely Led Zeppelin and they bring the intensity and just the rhythm and the groove.
❤❤❤Robert ❤❤❤
The beauty of this album is that years later we can see the direction that JPJ took this album. When i first got into Zeppelin, this was my least favourite album but 30 odd years later, i love its variety and progressive nature. Hey, you also need to give them credit for their ability to keep changing...it's a hard thing to do for any musician. Every album is gold now!
At the time of release Punk had come to treat Led Zeppelin as passe, the critics assumed the band was finished, hence the title. At the time of release all their albums soared into the charts. They saved industry that year, New Wave was not yet a big seller🎉❤
Yay so glad you are back into the Zep reactions. I like this album even though most people don’t rate it.
John Paul Jones was given the chance to show off his skills on keyboards/synth etc
An 80s Zep would have been interesting 😂
We would never abandon our "first." 😊
jimmy's solo takes off like a rocket launch
The intro to 'In the Evening' is still one of the best ever. I remember buying this album 40+ years ago in 6th grade and first hearing the intro thinking "wth is this???" Plant's vocals however are a bit drowned out in the mixing..
Great album IMO, I like every song on it...even Hot Dog. For me this album is a vibe and reminds of a time and place, I was 15-16 when it came out and loved the brown paper bag with the little stamp. Thanks for this Mike and Dev!
Absolutely love this album! It has all the Zeppelin eliminates to it….rock song/love song/ pop song/ progressive rock song/blues song ….and of course Hot Dog ….a fun cheeky track that they were so good at like The Crunge or Boogie With Stu or Candy Store Rock.
Some great solos by Jimmy on this album too and Roberts voice is very strong and more mature. Bonham is solid too especially on Fool In The Rain and Carouselambra.
One of my top 8 favourite Zeppelin albums lol. Cheers ✌️
You mean you like this more than Coda?
The intro to In The Evening is Jimmy using a gizmotron, a device created by the band 10CC. In live shows he bowed the guitar for the intro, but not on the album.
I saw both the 95 and 98 tours they were awesome !
Agreed, from a '95 attendee 😀
This is a very good album. Bought it upon it's initial release. I did not know about the B&W/Color feature. Are you kidding me? I thought i was 😎. 😊 Not even sure I was aware of the Dear John letter. But anyway -- loving y'all's channel. Doing some cruisin' through your queue. Good stuff, you cool people.
Keep on r'actin .
Dang Page. Reflections of MSG!
How time flies. 😥
Hot Dog was a tribute to Robert's road wife Audrey Hamilton
Hey great reaction as usual, I'm writing this as I watch your reaction, as you said most zeppelin fans don't like it nor the music journalist, for me I really liked it, I think I suggested that you read the book Hammer of the gods, I've read most books on zeppelin but this is best by far, John Paul Jones took overall control with Robert plant and said after they split he thought this was the direction they were going, one other book worth a read is by Richard Cole there tour manager, can't remember the title but it goes into more of their antics on tour and they were some bad asses at times, can't wait till you get to my personal favourite track on the album, fool in the rain, then you get to hear Bonzo at his very best, I had the pleasure of seeing the show with the Egyptian orchestra and London philharmonic orchestra twice in a week in UK, brilliant, one last thing, when zeppelin split whether its true I'm not sure but Robert sosay said the band were finished by then partly because Jimmy didn't attend the funeral of Roberts son, we will never know the truth, anyway you both take care till next time, all the best English Billy.
Thanks Peeps! The ONLY time I laid eyes and ears on Plant and Page live, was on this tour (Rosemont Horizon, Chicago 1995), GREAT memories all around!! Of Course, In Through the Out Door was just the NEW Zeppelin Album and it sounded GREAT!
The bar that inspired the album cover is at 400 Bourbon St in N.O. And when you are going thru live stuff, please make sure BBC Sessions is on that list....often overlooked, but hugely important, given they are live in the studio.
I can't wait till you get to Carouselambra... It was almost all John Paul Jones and Robert Plant, as far as developing the song. But Jimmy Page did craft awesome guitar on this one
I discovered Zep in my late teens, in the early 90s. I was mesmerised by their albums but I was so disenchanted with ITTOD that I eventually came up with an "alternative" album playlist, featuring some of the songs that didn't make it onto this or previous albums.:
Side 1
1. Wearing and Tearing
2. Ozone Baby
3. All My Love
4. Darlene
Side 2
5. Fool in the Rain
6. Carouselambra
7. Bonzo's Montreux
8. Walter's Walk.
I find that this tracklist really flows and complements the keyboard tracks, while making for a way more rocking album. This is the album I would have wanted them to release and for me would have been such a definitive statement leading into the 1980s.
Oh - and I think "suarez" is the same as French "soiree", and a "southbound suarez" refers to ahem, bestowing some oral pleasure. It kind of makes sense in the context of the lyrics.
Even in the 1960s we used to have children's comics with black and white pictures which would show up in colour if you painted over them with water. I suppose it's the same process as the record cover.
I hope you consider "Walking Into Clarksdale" by Page/Plant. As far as listening from beginning to end, I prefer it to this album. Although not Zeppelin the title track could have been.

The bar was modeled after the bar on 400 Bourbon St in New Orleans.
No printed lyrics because of Carouselambra in which Plant criticised Page for his actions after Plant's son died. "Where was your word, where did you go?
Where was your helping, where was your bow?" Page mixed that track to make Plant's words almost impossible to hear, for which he apologised years later.
All true.
Can’t understand most of the lyrics on that song due to the poor mix. Wonder who was responsible?
You're not supposed to understand the lyrics, because Robert basically ripped Jimmy a new a-hole with his lyrics, and they needed to be hidden.
Wow ! Never knew .
Agree with the comments, this album, most fans don't like it. I've always liked it and still remember when I first heard South Bound Saurez and thought.......is there any style these guys don't play with? I always figured saurez was a misprint and never bothered to think otherwise.
It's always been my guess that JPJ wasn't included in the 90s because Plant/Page didn't want it to seem like LZ was re-uniting. I'm still mad they didn't include JPJ tho, LOL
Dev is so silly, and Mike never laughs at her quips... which makes it even funnier.
I hope you do get around to CODA eventually because, c’mon, it’s Zeppelin and it’s a bunch of bangers throughout their career that didn’t make it on the albums, not because they were substandard, but because of time constraints of vinyl or flow considerations. It’s a must for any Bonham fans out there! There are songs on CODA that are better than any song off this album, just saying…except possibly Fool In the Rain or All of my Love which are among Zeppelin’s best for sure.
I wouldn't reduce In Through the Out Door to just Fool in The Rain and All My Love. I believe it is a great album.
@@joaolucasgomes3033 absolutely it is and as a fan of all JPJ’s contributions throughout their catalog, this is one where he’s at the helm and showing all his skills as a writer and arranger in his own right. All I’m saying is that CODA often gets overlooked and there are some great songs on there. I didn’t mean to belittle this album because Zeppelin was brilliant at whatever they attempted musically and this is no exception.
That bar was hit by a smooth criminal.
Yeah, the guitar solo has the sound of the strings of the guitar popping off the pickup one by one. It was probably an overdub woven seamlessly into the guitar track, but I don’t know for sure. I’m sure somebody out there who plays guitar knows how that was achieved.
Annie, are you okay?
Page said he used an old guitar with a spring whammy bar. He miked the spring and started with it in the compressed position and then slowly released it.
Bonham was also dipping into heroin as well. He was on it during the live knebworth show.
Suarez is pronounced like the hispanic name you mentioned I think. There was a Uruguayan footballer with that name spelt the same way and pronounced as you first said, though there's no connection between him and this song - that footballer being on the scene much later.
If I remember correctly I had the album cover in the upper left, behind Dev.
It's been a while, so I could be wrong.
This is amazing...JPJ influence! There's still Coda!
Hi Julie. I’ve posted a comment about the album that I believe is an honest statement based on my lifelong support of LZ. Best wishes from England 🏴.
JPJ's album, amazing keyboards.....and Coda....Darlene!
Do In The Evening from 1979 knebworth!!
We are going to do a bunch of Knebworth.
Carouselambra in the middle
I see Michael Jackson from Smooth Criminal in the album cover.
Annie, are you okay?
About time you got back to Zeppelin!... Just kidding LOL... Not my fave album compared to their others, but still a lot to love... At this point Jimmy was quite healthy compared to the late '70s... Unfortunately I think some synapses were permanently fried, he would never be like the early '70s again... BUT, there were times during the '95 and especially '98 Plant/Page tours where both of them were shockingly good and dare I say better than they were with late '70s Zep!
❤❤❤
Thanks @EdA1 !!
I agree that this is not one of their best, but still good! We were lucky to have the '94 - '98 "reboot." (I wish I had seen them in '98.)
They were still awesome in 1975, trust me. Sloppy and inconsistent in 1977, Knebworth 1 was great but the second show was a mess. European tour 1980 was trimmed of excess instrumental numbers to a barely 2 hour set list and Jimmy was much better on most nights. Bonham still has health issues then. Yeah the P&P shows were way better than LZ77 or LZ80.
@@malcshone4409 agree with everything you said except that, although 75 was close to awesome what kept it from being as good as 73 was Plant. Clearly his worst year vocally. No criticism because there’s nothing he could do about it but having seen them in 72 and 73, being there in 75 it was painful hearing Robert try to make it through shows. Jimmy was still fantastic but he was starting to fall off slightly from his peak in 72 and 73. But yeah 75 still had some of that early magic. Of course 77 had it moments but by then they were nothing like the band I saw in 72.
@@EdA1 I saw them in November 1971. Still the loudest thing I have heard in my 69 years alive. Earls Court 75 was a great “ spectacle” that was so far in advance of what most other bands provided on stage at the time. Longer, louder, visually superb and better played. I’ve seen everyone who was “ big” btw.
So glad that Jimmy Page had a solid contribution on the album with In The Evening. Otherwise, it seems he lost his source of artistic inspiration after Morpheus came into his life. Unfortunately, I feel he never regained his Muse based of his lack of Great output that once poured out of him. 😿
There was clues to tell you to wet the sleve... See how on the cover there's parts that look like they're wiped clean?
Haha I love how you can categorize every song about being either about sex or Lord of the Rings.
Is Mike from Cleveland?
No
I think you got it wrong, pretty sure it's Suarez.
I thought so as well, but look at the record label at 4:22
hahahahahahahaha... Jimmy was not involved with this....hahahahhahahahaha
i LOVE the intro but im not a big fan of the track
And another bad thing. You should have chosen to watch the live version of this. Much better
Our reaction to the live version - ua-cam.com/video/XsDPDUeDRpI/v-deo.html
Good Evening Sir and Madam. This is the only song on ITTOD that I can still listen to. The rest of the album is awful in my opinion and nowhere near the LZ that I loved since 1969. Apart from the fact that Jimmy is almost absent on most of the tracks, the vocals are way too low in the mix. The songs are mostly weak imitations of themselves, sadly. Having said all that, they pulled out all the stops at Knebworth in 1979. ( yeah of course I was there ). The P&P live version was awesome and grandiose with that Egyptian orchestra, as you said in the video. As I adore you both I will follow you through the rest of this album but I can’t make many positive comments about the songs as quite frankly, they suck. This from someone who bought LZ1 in April 1969 and sold his Beatles White Album to raise cash to buy LZ2 and saw the band live 4 times, including Knebworth. I just never play ITTOD. See you soon guys. Best wishes from an old grump in England 🏴.
We appreciate your loyalty, and there's still Knebworth and O2 to look forward to. 🎸🙂
Carouselambras lyrics are among the most important lyrics in the entire Zeppelin catalog, because their meaning is about Robert destroying his band mates - mostly Jimmy - over Jimmy's lack of emotional support after his son Karac died. The vocals are buried in the mix because Jimmy must have figured out that Carouselambra was written about him, and he responded by burying the vocals (and therefore the songs meaning) in the mix.
@@tektoniks_architects So I believe, yes.
