Honestly my biggest gripe with the new combat system ever since it was introduced, is the fact that it is not intuiitive. Nothing stops you from spam-clicking, but if you do you do zero damage. If you are a new player, you have absolutely no way of knowing that this is how the system works. I wish they would have opted with just a slight shorter cooldown, and made it so that you cannot punch at all while on the cooldown

    • @uponeric36

2:59 It actually made bows basically useless since shields block 100% projectile damage and can reflect arrows over a limited distance. Bows were made even more useless by making mending and infinity mutually exclusive, and then by the release of crossbows since crossbows have the piercing enchant that goes through raised shields.
Also tipped arrows are very popular and hugely used for endgame pvp. Potion effects such as weakness, slowness, poison are very valuable. Even niche potions like arrows of healing, harming, slow falling and jump boost have their place. They are very accessible through a master fletcher villager, so you don't even need to farm ender dragon that much to get tipped arrows

Minecraft really was never meant for PVP, The PVE experience is exponentially better, and that's what's most important. these minor nitpicks are also things that could easily be tweaked by server owners.
Honestly, old PVP is complete dogshit and held on a pedestal by people who play nothing else similar to it- it's braindead, boring, no mechanical nuance in the slightest, and especially after all the souls games and shit like chivalry II came out, it's just a pathetic excuse for melee combat in a game. Notch clearly never considered PVP as a possibility for the game in the beggining and it rewards intense spam clicking more than anything else, which just makes it pay to win- higher quality, more expensive mice can click faster. it doesn't take a lick of skill or intelligence. I got bored of it after the novelty of skyblock/bedwars wore off and I realized A: The actual PVP isn't fun at all, and B: I was never gonna consistently win because I don't have a 200$ mouse and don't want to practice spam clicking all day despite how completely useless that "skill" is in every other real life application and game, because no decent game developer with half a brain cell would implement anything that rewards intense fervent spam clicking- It's total cancer.

i hate when people are trying to defend the old combat, and their main talking point is "high cps isnt *that* advantageous in pvp"
because it is. the faster you click, the better you do. you talk about missing one click, and how it could be the end of your battle. there should never be a reward for just having the capability to physically outperform someone, rather than mentally. my max cps is like 5, its impossible for me to actually play competitively online without getting arthritis (cant even enjoy bedwars). cps matters like hell, especially when you're trying to play online because SO MANY PEOPLE ARE USING AUTOCLICKERS. you know what would make autoclickers less advantageous? a cooldown that makes you weaker when you dont listen to it.
theres no other game i play where one of the reasons you can lose is "oh you didnt click fast enough, but they did".

As someone who frequently played on servers in the 1.8 days, I don't miss the old combat system at all. The worst part of the update for me was the server community refusing to move on from 1.8. 1.9's changes for me always felt underdeveloped, like they were pushed out before good testing and QA could be done. They're... fine enough I guess. Though they needed a lot more to them to make the combat not feel like it was just a change that added a timer to your swings and an annoying sweep effect that made neutral mobs angry at you if you were trying to hit something else. I think if they had added a larger variety of weapons, and maybe even some unique armor with different effects to the existing sets, then it could have made combat way more interesting, but all it really achieved was adding some tedium to it that doesn't need to be there.

    • @uponeric36

I think they wanted to stop while they were ahead with the changes and allow people to get used to the main new components of the new system: timing attacks and shields, but then decided to pull back on ever making further changes so they don't just recreate the controversy - no matter how much those changes are needed. This reflects their overall more conservative approach to Minecraft that they've been taking post buyout.

Yes, the massively talented players and YTers have made amazing strides in understanding and execution of the 1.8- combat mechanics, but for 99% of players it was just spam clicking and whoever had the lower ping won. As a casual player who never does PvP, I prefer the 1.9+ combat mechanics. I'm not going to say 1.8 was easier, but it was definitely less interesting. Fighting mobs in 1.9 feels much more challenging and strategic, since I have to make every sword strike count. The sweeping effect helps somewhat (and is hugely useful in XP farms), but I still feel the need to conserve my hits because of the cooldown time. Skeletons are a much more intimidating enemy with their smarter battling style, and I still genuinely fear them unless I'm well-armed and armored. Of course all of this gets much easier when you have a shield, but I usually don't acquire a shield until fairly late in the game.

As someone who enjoys PVE, I actually like the 1.9 combat. I find PVE more fun and enjoyable with 1.9 combat than 1.8 combat. I've played some pve maps such as Shock Arena, and trust me if you have to deal with like 5 skeletons at the same time even if a shield you're not out of the woods, and this is because unlike the 1.8 sword blocking, shielding doesn't block any attacks that are not coming from in front of you, so that means if you're preparing to block and arrow, a zombie for example could very well ambush from behind and hit you. I indeed had to like calculate timings of when each skeleton shoot so that I can face the skeletons at the right timing to block their arrow. Obviously this isn't gonna happen in survival, but I anyways barely even play survival, it's not my cup of tea.
I'm not a big fan of PVP (mainly cz I actually suck at it, both 1.8 and 1.9 combats), however I do agree that for PVP 1.8 combat is better. But let's be honest, I don't see why people just stay in 1.8 (ofc if they only play for PVP that makes sense but I bet not everyone only does PVP), they could, say go to a later version when they play survival and if they want PVP or smth like playing on Hypixel they log on 1.8, plain and simple. I think that this makes sense.

The update launched in February 2016, while my magazine is from October 2015. It's honestly a reslly fascinating time capsule... it showed many of the things I still remember Minecraft for.
I haven't played that game in a _looooong_ time (college am I rite), but when I think about the game, much of the new stuff doesn't come to mind. I keep forgetting you can't spam click the swords nowadays, I keep calling the Badlands "Mesas", I still think of the classic Zombie Pigmen... heck, for some reason I still think Tundras are in the game, despite the fact they were gone by 1.8. It's... bizarre. To look back and see how much the game changed, both before the version I'm most used to, and after.

1.9 is one of the better updates.
Combat rework was for the better, you don't win anymore because you have a high dpi mouse(timed attacks) with the best armor in the game(pre 1.9 armor had a minimum of 88% Damage Reduction to ~70%) and a stack of enchanted gold apples(I think the stat nerf and removal of the crafting recipe was a bit much, but was overall better). Axes got higher damage and shield breaker effect, which makes them a equal to the swords as the swords have better DPS, AoE, and last twice as long, with Shields being a good checker to bows while being a bit worse in melee combat(pre 1.11 shields only negated 33% of melee damage, though said change buffed Axes and nerf Swords).
the "improvements" of The End made it worthwhile to fight the dragon and grab the Elytra, whilst finding solid equipment to save time on enchanting powerful armor and fighting the then elusive Mending enchant.
Honestly my issues are with Hunger buffs being overwhelming as regening health was just as good as eating a 1.9 enchanted golden apple, Frost Walker being a mediocre enchant, The dragon itself being a gatekeeper then a actual boss, Beetroots, Lingering Potions being as underwhelming and needing a buff to apply a third tier effect, and Sharpness being nerfed(I think the 1 to .5 for the four tiers was dumb and should've been .75).
With that said, 1.9 is one of the better updates of the 20 major updates.

  • @uncertain_luei
    @uncertain_luei Рік тому +5

1.9's addition of both Mending and the Elytra went downhill later on, especially with 1.11.1's firework boost feature which makes the Elytra devalue every other mode of transportation in the game, and 1.14 making treasure enchantments such as Mending extremely easy to obtain with librarians, with the only actual difficulty being the BS RNG of re-rolling their trades.

As a former devoted Minecraft PVPer, backloaded combat doesn’t feel right. Even 1.8 combat doesn’t feel the greatest. In my opinion Minecraft pvp was the best in 1.7.10 with block hitting and a lot of other fun quirks like eating and breaking blocks at the same time. While I enjoy newer updates and their survival aspects the pvp is essentially dead to the community. Backloaded combat net code is the abysmal and 1.8 sword hits don’t connect. It sucks that we won’t ever get, in my opinion, what peak minecraft pvp was ever again.
However, the reason I actually stopped playing minecraft originally as more and more Microsoft updates came out was that I really only played 1.7.10 every single day. As minecraft expanded, my gameplay didn’t which left me bored. Coming back to minecraft after all these years with new updates has been a major change in how I interact with the world but I do find it super fun. As you stated I wish we could toggle on and off the combat styles but I think the combat update allowed more people to get into the game because of its ease of access AND fun new arrow types.
Minecraft as a game has had such a massive shift from what it was once. Minecraft now seems to focus more on survival rather than large scale servers which made the game find a newfound popularity in friend groups playing on their own private servers rather than joining mineplex or hypixel for a night of mini games. Maybe it’s the gen z nostalgia now that we have money for our own servers but the game’s shift to this more nuanced and “quieter” aspect I think was its savior. Minecraft has always been about exploring the world either on your own or with friends which allows you to craft the story from your own narrative. I miss the old days of a Saturday playing mini games like hunger games or dragon escape but the simplicity of hopping onto my group’s server to mine a bit and just talk about life is much more suited to who I am as a person now.

The thing is that even in the old combat system there was a cooldown, but the player was unable to interrupt it, not like today where every klick resets the cooldown. The old System was something for every casual (just spam clicking everything was simple and fun) and something for advanced players (the combos to gain more knockback and stuff). Microsoft just thought of "Never change a running system" and ignored it. And I'm not even talking about the inconsistency that some tools gain more attack dmg when upgrading from wood > stone > iron and some just didn't and sometimes the cooldown was shorten with better gear, and sometimes it didn't. Some people did a little math and came to the conclusion, that the either the wooden shovel, or stone shovel (I don't quite remember) where the most effective tool. All that upsets people (me included) and I'm happy that since 1.16 there is at least a command to make the cooldown 0 again.

TLDR; theres so much negativity surrounding 1.9 pvp people dont truly understand the mechanics that exist in it, and that it still has just as much depth, if not more, than 1.8 pvp, but yea PVE got easier
As someone whos played since the day mc released on xbox 360, and has played consistently since then, im just gonna say I think 1.9+ combat is simply more fun and complex. 1.8- combat, despite what you said, is still super simple spam click real fast. yea theres certain mechanics like juggling, strafing, and W tapping, but those mechanics still exist today. juggling and W tapping still very much exist in 1.9+, its just harder and looks a bit different. Swords are still able to put out way more dps than axes, but because of shields, axes are required. But sword still does way more dps than the axe. I do think that PVE has became way easier tho because of shields. Cant argue that. I find the whole 1.8 combat thing being kinda rediculous. You say it requires skill, but it does also matter just how fast you click and you try and go for the most opportunities to do damage which means getting really close and going around in circles. While with 1.9 combat you can't just go in spamming and you have to think a little, if you plan on doing crits you're more vulnerable to being hit because you're in the air and air strafing isn't amazing (I mean, it's better than IRL but worse than being on the ground). I think removing shields would benefit PvP because shields remove the need for armour if you're careful enough.
Then again I'm someone who in FPS games plays sniper (I have 1 video of my abilities) and I like a single accurate powerful shot over many less accurate weaker shots and so I treat those who go on about how much they love 1.8 combat with the same contempt as those who use machine guns and SMGs and fire for more than a few shots at a time as they're basically identical. So I don't doubt that people who love 1.8 combat also usually go for machine guns and SMGs and avoid sniper rifles
I do think that 1.9 does have a higher skill ceiling but it's also a different skillset to 1.8. With 1.8 there's a lot more going in circles and tracking players, while 1.9 is a lot more face on and going forwards and backwards. 1.9 removes needing to track much but it also adds in your ability to go backwards without getting stuck on anything, needing to take into account times and if you missed then you're a little fucked for a second, it does mean that less experienced players can get luckier and win fights but I think rather than that reducing the skill ceiling I think it instead lowers the skill floor. If you're a new player and you understand you have to recharge between hits you can take part and not do terribly.
It's a huge shame that PvP combat only ever caters to 1.8, I'm not aware of joining any server with PvP that doesn't have 1.8 compatability. So it could also be that those who love 1.8 combat have to because that's all they can use

My issue here is that all of the comments (and the video, to a lesser extent) are forgetting that Minecraft updates are never made with PvP exclusively in mind. It really frustrates me to see that 1.9 added so much content into the game - the new End, the Elytra, new enchantments, etc. - and people only dislike it because “ErMaHgErD pVp Is GaRbAgE nOw WoRsT uPdAtE eVeR”. Like, yeah, PvP is a big part of the game, but that doesn’t mean it should be the main focus. The goal of this update was to make a different combat system for singleplayer, and I think Mojang/Microsoft succeeded.

  • @darkpandalord3844

I think the main problem with the new combat system was how it's kinda made for a different game. Minecraft is supposed to be a very simplistic game with simple mechanics. I don't know about you all, but I don't play the game to fight monsters, I play the game to gather resources and to build, especially on mulitplayer. Pre 1.9 made it easy to ward off the occasional zombie or skeleton being a nuisance, just a quick annoyance then back to work. With the cooldown added, all it amounts to is a lot of waiting and not doing what you actually want to be doing. It was bad enough with the Zombie AI changes from 1.6, making it so that one can see you from 300 miles away and spawn more around you, but at least it wouldn't take long to kill them all. Not the case now. But the swing speed and cool down is far from the only issue, even though it's the one most commonly talked about. They also nerfed enchantments in this update. I replayed some older versions lately and was shocked how good even Sharpness III was compared to modern Sharpness V. That makes it even more of a pain to kill even individual mobs. Then there's the armor changes, making it a lot easier to die to surprise attacks, particularly Creepers (especially when I swear Creepers are bugged and don't always hiss before exploding in later versions, which makes you go from alive to dead immediately with no chance to stop it, but I digress). But I think the worst change might be the sweeping effect on swords. It gives very little practical benefit to attacking groups of mobs, but comes with many risks. Biggest one is probably accidentally agro-ing neutral mobs that just happened to be hanging around the hostile mob you were trying to kill. I cannot tell you the number of times I've accidentally agroed a Pigman when I'm just trying to kill a Blaze or Wither Skeleton or something. There's also the issue of farming passive mobs, say you have a pen of cows that's getting full, so you breed them one more time then start killing some of the adults. Well, have fun also putting a few swings into and possibly killing the babies as well! There's a ton of examples like this; hitting a villager when you're trying to ward off a hostile mob near it which then agros an iron golem, hitting a pet wolf when you're trying to fight mobs around it, hitting other players in a cave when you're both surrounded by mobs, etc etc etc. All this combined makes for an absolutely terrible experience that gets in the way of the parts of the game I enjoy. Give me the old combat system any day.

I would honestly rather have a proper survival mode in addition to he chill one. rather than getting the old pve.
Anyways cant wait for jeb's pvp experimental to be added. it has been so long and yet it seems he is still woring on that.

I personally don't think the update is that bad. They changed something that probably needed it. Was it for the better? Sort of they could've added more depth but they didn't. The combat is fine but the update jeb made looks even better. I dont really hate either combat styles both are good in their own ways

unpopular opinion: 1.9 was good for pvp imo you can still use swords for certain mechanics and it gave life for more skill, it did have its downsides but it wasn't the worst. you could still learn in survival but obviously its hard to master and survival may be harder. On top of that, elytras and shields were added

I actually liked the update, it’s just that Microsoft made Minecraft feel…less Minecrafty

Ngl I actually like 1.9 in singleplayer cause im glad the end has more stuff to do and the pve is good against mobs like zombies and skeletons but the pvp in multiplayer is bad but i never really cared about pvp so i dont think its that bad i think 1.10 is way worse

5:10 This is literally what I think of! People will like the newer combat, people will like the older. It can be a preference.
Older combat is the thing for me, I grew up with it and it just seems more funner and I don’t even fight players. I’m not a patient person, I like to do something fast LOL
