  • For a lot of us, Minecraft does not feel the same as it used to. Why is this? What happened to nostalgic Minecraft? Whether it be its evolution and change over time, or merely our own departure from childhood, Minecraft is not the same anymore; but not all hope is lost.

With Minecraft the one thing that helped keep Minecraft popular was the modding community and server community. The server community could run with or without mods while writing scripts unique to their servers.

From a Catholic studying cinematography, that's something you will VERY HARDLY hear about, all (good) art has a spirit, a soul, but since most people has nowadays became materialistic, they only have eyes for money, content, entertainment. They try to fulfill their lack of spirituality and/or feelings for all Earthly stuff. Art isn't art because many people consider it to be so (as for example, pointless abstract art), art is art because it trascends, it speaks almost directly to one's soul, it's also, an image of God, a very vivid one. But yeah, it's hard since most consider art many things that aren't and shouldn't.
    Good video. ;)

This was a great video essay, and the thoughts and perspective you raised rang true to my own feelings. One way I might describe the nostalgic experience of Minecraft is like a illusionary space. The atmosphere of such a place of mystery and uncertainty in the game makes players perceive the world in Minecraft much differently than the game in current versions, or compared to other games with similarities. Within earlier versions of Minecraft, the element of exploration and discovery is much more profound, not because there is more to find and discover, but because it is much more mysterious and is hard to determine depth.
An analogy for what I mean is this: Imagine you are in a dark space. There is no light at all besides a torch in your hand. The brighter your torch gets, the more you can see, the more clearly you can see things and the further out you can see things from. Consequently, the dimmer your torch is, the less you'll be able to see in those regards.
Playing within the latest version of Minecraft, you are have many different options, tools and ways to discover things. You have access to faster transportation via quicker boats, elytras, swimming, horses, etc. You can also access more resources quicker and with more abundancy, and structures, caves and biomes are more plentiful and distinct, acting at landmarks, able to orient your surroundings. You're able to move around and do things at a quicker pace, and also prepare and expect things further down the line. You have a bright torch that makes exploration and discovery easy to do.
Within earlier versions however, the options, content and resources that you have at your disposal become more and more limited. You're forced to play at a slower pace where you become more in tune in what you are doing presently, and being able to think about larger, future things or determine your place in your world becomes a lot harder. When you do find something new like a structure, it happens rarely and your experience with it is less commonplace. You have a dim torch that makes it hard to see everything at once, what is up ahead, and more so how big the world around you is.
If a later version of Minecraft can be compared to a sandbox, where everything is seen and everything is under your influence, the earlier, nostalgic version and experiences of Minecraft might look like a desert, where you aren't sure how far it expands, and what lies in it.

I would say the nostalgia went with our childhood. We miss what we had because it was so simple and fun, we didn’t have to worry about anything that we do now. And when we look back, it makes us both happy and sad. And the fact that the game is growing WITH us, alongside us, we realized that even fun games such as Minecraft will eventually come to an end. So we look back into the past as a way to escape it all.
