@@catscanhavelittleasalaminot for me tbh. I really liked how he found another addiction in his 14 hearts event, that video game. But I also don't like those dialogues he has that imply he still drinks. Idk why concerned ape even made those, they don't add up.
Imo, Shane got better because he could finally be vulnerable and had a support system. He was willing to work on himself. Love didn't fix him but him having people that actually gave a shit about him gave him the push to get the help he needed.
@@hi-sm6dx People who hate on Shane really like to gloss over that fact. Like you said he seeks therapy after gaining a support system- that being Harvey and the farmer and possibly Emily. It's not until after he seeks that help is when we get "romance" him, which I've always appreciated.
Shane is legit my favourite bachelor because of his character arc. As someone who suffers from depression and suicidal ideation, I can relate to him. And I personally don't see marriage to him as "trying to fix him"; you are there to support him when he's ready to take the steps toward recovery, on his own terms, at his own pace. You can't just expect someone to feel less depressed just because you love them, or by telling them to cheer up, or to suck it up because others have it worse than you and that they have no reason to feel sad, etc. (Actual things that my ex has told me.) People suffering from depression aren't choosing to be negative and sad, it's an illness. Some people also make a lot of comments about how he goes back to drinking and how is room is a mess and how he doesn't seem to feel better after marriage, as if that makes him bad. Recovery, be it from mental illness or addiction, is NEVER a straight line. There will be times when you make huge progress, but there will also be relapses. He's really sweet when you see the real Shane start to emerge.
Same here. I'm kinda sad people don't like him because he exhibits the less glamorous symptoms of mental illness, all of which I struggle from. I have issues pertaining to alcohol and I like that he can relapse, because anyone struggling with habit or addiction issues understands relapse is part of recovery! IDK what people expect from this character. It makes me wonder if people think mentally ill people are capable of being partners at all without it being codependent. :( and to those people that think people with depression and AUD aren't capable of being in a relationship: I've been in a happy relationship for 5 years now! I have moments of pain but we always work through it together, and I always take accountability for myself.
It is weird though, it isnt like shane comes home drunk and he ain't abusive when in marriage, and from the heart event when he came out of the saloon he was happy to see you, it isnt like he was nervous or was hiding anything from you. Though true when finding someone, you shouldn't be the one to fix them after you're married, they should of already have taken care of the issues before they started dating you, in marriage you should not expect everything to magically fix itself, not everyone's journey is the same. Eh it is a game but, it does give a bit to think about like a mini scenario of the "what if"
Shane is my first marriage. He has really deep cutscenes and it makes him feel real. I liked that he was getting better and finding help. Once married he seemed to relapse, but people tend to forget that with addiction you don’t overcome it just like that. Loves the growth he showed. I also love his interactions with Jas. Also Shane is closely based on CA’s close friend.
Exactly! I hate that people were annoyed at the fact he relapsed, trying to get sober for someone else is gonna fail, and sobriety is not linear. Taking soneones sobriety so personal urks me when its their journey and their journey alone
The problem is not that he relapses that's understandable and adds to his character. The problem is that he relapses once you marry him. Stardew valley being the masterpiece that it is, has the characters stagnant once you marry them, so Shane will now spend the entire future that you're married to him being a slobbing drunk that the entire character arc leading up to your marriage was about him overcoming it. If he had relapses as an 8 heart or 12 heart event and they were about you reinforcing that you're there to help him and support him then that would be different. But no, as soon as you marry him he just becomes the exact same old person that he was

I think his route is handled wonderfully… as someone with Suicidal thoughts, severe depression, and unhealthy coping mechanisms, it feels like someone shining a light on the not so good parts, and the light those realizations can give. I also just really like the “is mean to you and maybe spits on you sometimes but likes you overtime” troupe : )
His 14 hearts cutscene could have been better, imagine if it was a scene with us having a sweet and grateful moment with Shane while playing with Charlie? 😊
shane gets so much hate and im real sick of it because nobody takes actual notice in him. when youre playing with shane, your job isnt to fix him. youre there to support him and help him through his issues as you would a close friend. you comfort him and push him towards the correct choices but also let him figure it out on his own. i see so much drama about him still drinking even after marriage and its just blatantly overlooked how improved he is. shane went to the saloon every day, drinking a beer in the corner everyday. but after you marry him, he only goes there every one-two days. even at that point he isnt drinking alcohol, hes in the corner playing an arcade game with a jojo cola. his little comments about beer are natural. hes use to drinking, just because hes seeking help doesnt mean hes automatically cured of his alcoholism, but hes slowly getting better as these things take time and effort. also him seeking counseling also seems to be overlooked. i know he doesnt literally leave to go to zuzu city for his sessions, but he could easily do off-screen things, as in over the phone sessions (which a lot of people do, especially if they live farther away) shane is such a strongly written character that people over look, and thats why hes one of my favorites. his storyline, history, lore, its all so frighteningly realistic for a cute farming pixel game. appreciate shane more, he truly deserves better.
What makes you think Shane ever suffered from alcoholism? I think he suffered from depression, which led him to drink excessively. There are several hints in the game that some bad events happened in his life. However, there are no hints that he has/had alcohol addiction as a chronic disease.
@@elenan.798 he 100% suffers from alcoholism and depression, they can be tied together. he literally goes to therapy over both of these issues, have you even played the game? (as a side note, one of the said bad events is what happens to jas's parents)
It's not about fixing him, his storyline makes it clear that it's not fixing someone!!! It's about being with him and loving him while being loved back and supporting him I feel like he's the only one who would support me if I felt the same way because he would understand
I married Shane in my play through, he was very relatable to me at the time. And because you can “fix” him, I was happy, because at the time, I couldn’t fix myself. I’m doing a second play through and going to marry Shane again but with some mods
I only romanced Shane so far, and I have to say, that I can't understand people, who say he's bland or doesn't change, when married. Yes, his room is a mess, but he is so nice and lovely, helps on the farm, cares for the animals, "checks the house" before winter, makes you food and more. He's the best. And now that I found a mod to change his clothes, he is even more handsome.
10000%, plus he never said he would quit cold turkey, he just has the occasional drink sometimes but never gets super fucked up from it (except i believe he says "how many did i have last night?" on spring 1, but considering it's New Years and it doesn't cause a relapse I'd say he definitely isn't "regressing". He fixes my fences, feeds my animals, and is the best stay at home dad
Shane and Alex are my favorite marriage candidates because I like their stories and their development. Here's the thing: I'm not trying to "fix" Shane when I marry him. He ain't particularly broken by the time marriage becomes an option - in fact, he's pulling his shit together pretty well before that. My motivation is to protect and shelter him and give him a break - I can transform his life, so I do. (Actually, the farmer transforms the life of whoever he marries - thereby "saving" whichever NPC they lite on - not just Shane. Think about it, it's true! Every NPC is trying to escape something in this game.) The first time I saw his cliff cut scene, I said out loud, "OK, he needs me." Shane doesn't need an intervention as much as he needs support. Honestly, I don't give a damn if he pops a few brews watching the Tunnellers' game at night. That doesn't make him an alcoholic - he's a depressive who uses alcohol to self-medicate and maybe, just maybe, to relax. People get so judgmental over perfectly normal behavior patterns. Besides, he's in bed by 10pm every night! Some Libertine HE is! I also don't care about his messy room. If that's the worst manifestation, all things considered, what's the big whoop? The only difference is that in real life, I'd be able to get his rug cleaned!
I always liked making friends with Shane. I only have one playthrough where I'm marrying him though, and I'm using the Immersive Shane mod in it. I love that it does things like change his loved gifts after he enters treatment so that he no longer loves being gifted beer. Instead he will legit get pissed off if you give him that when he's recovering. He also has content to expand on his treatment and recovery, and best of all he can take over for Marnie in her shop when she's out. It just feels like it fixes how his story suddenly kinda hits a brick wall after marriage.
Tbh I married him because I have depression and I found him relatable. I didn't have an "I can fix him" attitude or daddy issues, I just found myself relating to him and really liked his heart events. His marriage definitely wasn't handled very well though. I wasn't expecting his depression to be cured, but it felt like he just regressed and all the character development disappeared. Him going to therapy also isn't mentioned again, which is disappointing. I think the immersive Shane mod fixes a lot of the problems I had with him while also staying true to the character.
It's sad that Shane still likes beer after his change, but at least when you look literally every adult in the game likes beer as a gift and goes to the saloon once a week or even twice and drink too, so in that way doesn't seem so bad, at least it's not a habit anymore...
@@Olive.sometimes.with.an.r I married him myself the first time I played and more recently as a symbolic gesture for the first time I will achieve perfection, and he accepts beer as a gift.

Shane seems to help himself when you make friends with him, if you see the heart events. but i believe he's better as a friend then a spouse. also i thought Marnie was okay but seeing how she acts towards Shane here, i kinda hate her. during the entire time Shane is fighting his addiction, Marnie is making jokes about it and basically making it seem like she things he's nothing more than a drunkard. and i'm so pissed about his room and how he acts when you marry him, the lines, where he's like "beer or cider" but i do like the fact he goes to video games to cope with it, as it's something people actually do to stop. also, is that Alex in the top part of Shanes 10 heart scene? that's cute
I'm realising now how horrible she and Lewis is. I have max hearts with them both- But now to support and show my undying love to my husband, I'm going to give that old bìtch a lump of clay. It's funny, because Shane was the one who told me that bit of info. :)
I have never played stardew valley but I got to put things into perspective I don't think marnie was meaning to be uncaring I think the problem has been in a loop for years to the point she just doesn't know what to say anymore there's a conversation needed between the two of them a long one
I'd agree, but Marnie has a dialogue where she says "Shane has been living with me for the past few months" and Shane lived in Zuzu City before moving to Stardew, so they don't really have any kind of years of history in that department. It definitely could be her used to it from the past few months, but it still is very cold all things considered

You can't fix Shane because Shane was never broken. He's depressed and has too much self-pity. It's your responsibility as a friend to slap him and remind him of Jas. Shane does the rest.
Shane was my first husband in Stardew Valley. However, it was only because when I started playing I just happened to be having a penny-wise time in my life, and that's why I felt sympathy for him because I felt that I wasn't the only one who was currently in a bad situation. To date, I have not deleted the farm with him because I feel sentimental about it and life with him.
I never wanted to ‘fix’ Shane but seeing him work on himself and get better mental is something I went through to this extent myself and I thought it was nice having a partner that would understand

Maybe the beer thing he's saying is as a joke perhaps? Like, maybe he feels nervous being gifted a beer which he tries (and fails) at overcoming, so as a result of stress, he just jokes saying it's his favourite thing, as he doesn't want to refuse a gift :0.
@@catscanhavelittleasalaminot for me tbh. I really liked how he found another addiction in his 14 hearts event, that video game. But I also don't like those dialogues he has that imply he still drinks. Idk why concerned ape even made those, they don't add up.
Oh dear god, marrying Shane makes me feel like I’m 15 again and can magically make people better by loving them. How naive 😅
@@aey3125I've found people that understand. 🥹
Bud how are you doing today buddy and how are you doing okay and mentally bud

I wish you happiness, everyone deserves to be happy!
But no, as soon as you marry him he just becomes the exact same old person that he was
@@destinpatterson1644 He doesn't relapse ._. He drinks joja cola and sparkling water and if he goes to the bar it is to play and drink joja there is nothing wrong there, his room is messy but there is nothing wrong with it XD

there’s a mod for both of these things! It’s called Immersive Characters: Shane :)
Shane will forever and always be my favorite Romancable.. he’s also my fav character in the game. Period.
Literally his whole story is about how he improves. He stops drinking and becomes muchhh happier
“Oh…wow…sparkling water? Might as well just go back to being an addict” lmfao 🤣 I’m crying
I feel like Shane's hearts are one of the few easily accessible "adult" moments.
His 14 hearts cutscene could have been better, imagine if it was a scene with us having a sweet and grateful moment with Shane while playing with Charlie? 😊

@@caseydreamuslpsandmore2582 Conglatumations, you missed a joke that's more obvious than the joke that is my life.
I’m sure he was based of a real person aswell. I think his storyline really shows that loving and being loved can help, but it won’t fix anyone.
shane gets so much hate and im real sick of it because nobody takes actual notice in him.
when youre playing with shane, your job isnt to fix him. youre there to support him and help him through his issues as you would a close friend. you comfort him and push him towards the correct choices but also let him figure it out on his own.
i see so much drama about him still drinking even after marriage and its just blatantly overlooked how improved he is.
shane went to the saloon every day, drinking a beer in the corner everyday. but after you marry him, he only goes there every one-two days. even at that point he isnt drinking alcohol, hes in the corner playing an arcade game with a jojo cola. his little comments about beer are natural. hes use to drinking, just because hes seeking help doesnt mean hes automatically cured of his alcoholism, but hes slowly getting better as these things take time and effort.
also him seeking counseling also seems to be overlooked.
i know he doesnt literally leave to go to zuzu city for his sessions, but he could easily do off-screen things, as in over the phone sessions (which a lot of people do, especially if they live farther away)
shane is such a strongly written character that people over look, and thats why hes one of my favorites. his storyline, history, lore, its all so frighteningly realistic for a cute farming pixel game.
appreciate shane more, he truly deserves better.
I agree.
I agree honestly. Before Shane was even romanceable his heart events were my favorite because he had such a human and well written storyline.
It's not about fixing him, his storyline makes it clear that it's not fixing someone!!! It's about being with him and loving him while being loved back and supporting him

Harvey is the most stable and also takes care of the farm and animals, and make food too

“I really want a joja cola *gives joja cola* Ohh…a joja colaaa????I hate this shit!!”
Every NPC is trying to escape something in this game.) The first time I saw his cliff cut scene, I said out loud, "OK, he needs me."
Shane doesn't need an intervention as much as he needs support.
Ohhh I need this mod! Thank u for bringing it up
You can't unshane shane, I'm sorry guys
Shane Is just Shane
Tbh I married him because I have depression and I found him relatable. I didn't have an "I can fix him" attitude or daddy issues, I just found myself relating to him and really liked his heart events.
His marriage definitely wasn't handled very well though. I wasn't expecting his depression to be cured, but it felt like he just regressed and all the character development disappeared. Him going to therapy also isn't mentioned again, which is disappointing. I think the immersive Shane mod fixes a lot of the problems I had with him while also staying true to the character.
I love how he always finds a reason to end up divorcing anybody
It's sad that Shane still likes beer after his change, but at least when you look literally every adult in the game likes beer as a gift and goes to the saloon once a week or even twice and drink too, so in that way doesn't seem so bad, at least it's not a habit anymore...
Is hilarious to know that Sebastian is one of the few who hates beers as gifts.
Not all recovering alcoholic aimed to never drink again, Shane seems to aim for moderation and so far there's progress i think
I think beer is one of his hated gifts after you marry him? Might be wrong.
@@Olive.sometimes.with.an.r I married him myself the first time I played and more recently as a symbolic gesture for the first time I will achieve perfection, and he accepts beer as a gift.
After a cutscene every time he goes to the saloon he only plays the arcade, you don't see him drink anymore
Shane is my first husband, bcs he was the easiest to court in game HAJSKSK but i was so surprised with how deep his story is, idk if i had a "i can fix him" mentality when i married him. But i was definitely enamored with his story and wanted to see how it would be in the happily ever after with the farmer. I was attached to this beautiful sad man and i just wanted to be there for his pixels HAHAHA but his post marriage is definitely a bit disappointing with the canned beers on his spouse room and any therapy talk wasnt brought up again. He will always have a special place in my heart though, my first love HAJAJAJA

True tho
My little meow meow
Shane is and will always be my fav stardew character. Reason? He’s just like me fr
Shane seems to help himself when you make friends with him, if you see the heart events. but i believe he's better as a friend then a spouse. also i thought Marnie was okay but seeing how she acts towards Shane here, i kinda hate her. during the entire time Shane is fighting his addiction, Marnie is making jokes about it and basically making it seem like she things he's nothing more than a drunkard. and i'm so pissed about his room and how he acts when you marry him, the lines, where he's like "beer or cider" but i do like the fact he goes to video games to cope with it, as it's something people actually do to stop.
also, is that Alex in the top part of Shanes 10 heart scene? that's cute
Marnie has her head in the clouds with Lewis. She can't be bothered sticking to her work schedule, or pick up her lover's purple lettuce.
I'm realising now how horrible she and Lewis is. I have max hearts with them both- But now to support and show my undying love to my husband, I'm going to give that old bìtch a lump of clay. It's funny, because Shane was the one who told me that bit of info. :)
I have never played stardew valley but I got to put things into perspective
I don't think marnie was meaning to be uncaring
I think the problem has been in a loop for years to the point she just doesn't know what to say anymore
there's a conversation needed between the two of them
a long one
I'd agree, but Marnie has a dialogue where she says "Shane has been living with me for the past few months" and Shane lived in Zuzu City before moving to Stardew, so they don't really have any kind of years of history in that department. It definitely could be her used to it from the past few months, but it still is very cold all things considered
@@Cecilia-wj8vwThen that brings in another point she's not use to this kind of thing at all I know I wouldn't and probably wouldn't have the best responses in that situation either

You can't fix Shane because Shane was never broken. He's depressed and has too much self-pity.
