"The people that drive this car are some of my favorite people in the motoring community" Awww thanks Nick :)
ravesilly It's so true.
Met so many Wrx/Sti's owners and they're ALL nice people. Including myself.
yep ture
Great review Nick! Your summary at the end was really good, it's definitely the more hardcore one. The regular 2015 WRX is more comfortable but not quite as much fun. The new regular WRX reminds me a lot of the S4 in the way it drives.
subaruwrxfan Thanks buddy, yes the WRX seems much more mass market all rounder.
Got the 2016 and it's more fun than a human being should be allowed to have. FYI, The interior for me is civilized and was the main reason why I chose it over the German counterparts.
Just love it
Spot on review, Nick. I own a 2012 STI Hatchback and I agree with all the positive and negative points you made. Whenever I get hung up on the little interior rattles, the heavy clutch, or the NVH I take a spirited drive out on twisty country roads and immediately remember why I bought the car.
Thanks. The hatchback looks so much better I think.
This review was a lot of fun to watch and I love that you take a car for what it is! A lot of reviewers end up hating the car because it is so sports oriented. I think that they forget that the only people who are interested in this car are the ones who want it for the performance! I personally bought my '15 STi for performance.
When making adjustments to the center differential putting the diff more rear bias doesn't make it a completely rear wheel drive car. It just sets the diff to have more power to the rear than the front. (I believe it's a 61/39 split) :)
Finally something that's not German! Keep the variety coming Nick haha
I picked one of these up today. 1 of 1000. I've never loved a car so much.. matter of fact I don't think I've ever loved a woman this much
The sort of people that buy WRX's in the UK are the sort that would stab you for your Big Mac.
LOL excellent comment.
Nick Murray Why thank you.
Pretty much the same in New Zealand - though they are also always the first people to stop and offer help if you break down.
Don't confuse 2nd or 3rd hand owners with original owners. I don't own flat brimmed hats and I hate energy drinks.
I not sure any of this is true about WRX onwers, or at least not in California. My previous neighbor had a bug eyed STI, and he was an absolute hipster, not the kind of guy you want to be friends with, nor will you ever see him eating McDonald's.
"This car is sucking gas like a 7-4-7" LOL...love that! Excellent review, so glad you understand the reason this car exists! I just recently got out of a 2GS4 Lexus, it was fine until I bought my wife a MINI S Hardtop 2 years ago, which really opened my eyes and senses and reminded me how fun great sporty cars can be...Couldn't wait to ditch the Lexus after that! Although I agree the ride is very sporty in the STi, the MINI's ride is much harsher imo!
Good idea to show the dashboard. Put another camera to show the pedals when you driving. Nice review this one. I like the colour of the car. But only 36000 miles warranty?
this is afcorse, the sahbahrue WRX STI
Caught me off guard a little bit, especially after the "of course" 😂
Just so you're aware Nick, the DCCD can only go up to 59% bias to the rear in the 2015. The manual locking diff is a great feature, though.
Nick, you're getting better and better! Keep going
Wow such great review. You talk about the aspects that I didn't think of and other reviewers don'y even care to mention like the noise, the car is not for typical user...
I own an evo x MR, and that also has horrible fuel economy, the engine is inline 4 with variable intake and exhaust valve timing, but the mechanical awd system and no direct fuel injection, hydraulic steering these add to the fun part, at the cost of fuel economy.
On some of the Porsche 911 AWD models, you can set it to RWD by pulling the e-Brake up a single notch.
Nick, i guess your general comments about the DCCD (the button you loved) regarding four wheel drive is ok, but technically incorrect. It doesn't make the a car 4wd or Rwd. STI's center differential is planetary based gear with computer controls clutch pack to varies lock. There is supposed be a LSD mechanism somewhere per the official description but I am never able to confirm without open up one myself. Maybe just spring on the clutch pack. Anyway the torque split 41:59 front to back on the planetary gear set, so when you fully unlock it, it's just 59% power to the rear, it doesn't make it a RWD car. When you push it all the way front, it's fully lock and it lock pretty well (can't do U-turn with lock on tarmac as it's binding pretty good. I had an GR STI). But IT IS NEVER REAR WHEEL DRIVE. IT'S JUST 59% REAR WHEEL BIAS WHEN YOU PUT ALL THE WAY BACK ON THE DCCD. I personally still think it understeers too much on the GR stock setup, they set it up better on the 2015 to have better alignment for turn it, but under power it's still push.
The new intro is definitely a friendlier approach. Great job with your vids as usual.
Another great video and what a car for the real enthusiast. Love the bumpy walkaround too. I find your 90s esque rock music at the start and end hilarious mind! I know you probably didn't mean for it to be that way..
It is true, I have no idea about music : )
Great review, you explained it in a way even my wife understands now why I own these cars.
Loved your review, I liked the many angles inside the car. You did a nice work. You have a new subscriber.
Great review! You listed all the reasons on why I bought my 2015 STI.
Hey Nick, nice car and the videos look impressive in 60p. I'm a former Impreza owner, so I enjoyed this! I wanted to offer some constructive criticism regarding the environment from which the videos. I think finding some better roads to drive on would improve the videos! Some mountain roads or long straights instead of Suburbia would be awesome.
ash3rr I agree I am planning to drive better roads for future videos.
I can't wait until the year where the STi upgrades the engine
Your editing keeps improving, nice review.
Awesome!! I wanted to always ask you if you would do a WRX review since I have a 2015 as well but figured that wouldn't happen here...I guess miracles do happen once in a while..although I must say your Subaru pronunciation is truly advanced...
See I am looking out for you John ....
since u r asking, i think i prefer the normal footage as compared to te 'steady cam' footage..still luving the beautiful beautiful images..keep it up Nick n thanks
Awesome video! Thank you! This is my favorite Sti one by far! Keeep up the nice work!
I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese... Haha! Awesome video Nick! I prefer your standard method walk around of the vehicle, which I think mainly is just the smoothness of it. I did enjoy the way you pointed out the special features and opened the hood for a detailed look at the STI's engine. Looking forward to the videos in New Zealand!
I like this exterior approach better than the voice over
Nick,
Thanks a lot for the great video! I have a 2015 WRX (non-STI) and love it!!!! It was nice to see some of the features the STI has in the way of differentials and throttle mappings. I'm sure you had a blast! Keep driving the cars you drive!
PS: I'm interested to know what Porsche you decide to buy.
Thanks,
Andrew
I think the standard WRX has a lot to offer at considerably less.
I am also interested to know what Porsche I decide to buy, it will depend a great deal on what changes with the 991.2, if I was to pick today it would be a loaded CS2 with MT, or a light spec Turbo. I plan to do a video on the options I am thinking about as soon as the 991.2 is released hopefully next month.
Excellent review. The best I've seen of this car. Thank you!!!!!! Subscribed
Just started following your videos! Keep doing what you are doing! Good review!!!
the sti need the new fa20t engines, the s4 in japan are already pushing 300ps, great review nick
Buy one Nick. It should be a great winter car to let the M4 rest.
Subaru? Impossibru! Great review. I feel that until the STI gets the new 2 litre direct injection engine, the WRX is much better overall value (plus no goofy wing). The 2.5 is a holdover as it has huge historical tuner and racing support, but the newer engine is showing some really big numbers with only minor tweaks, all while saving the planet fuel-wise (relatively speaking). I love my Subarus. My last Legacy literally drove through a river with water above the windows while getting me home after the Chch earthquakes, and still ran fine the next day and every day until I eventually moved on. To another Subaru, of course.
Thanks for the great and fair review, had myself a ver5 sti last of the square headlights model. Absolute blast of a car to drive, yer right tho that the ride is all performance oriented, after a 400km ride I was gettin a sore bum lol....but was buzzing outa my mind. You coulda made life simpler for yourself tho, instead of reiterating that they are an enthusiast/performance car and not a mobile lounge suite, you can simply say they are a DRIVERS CAR!!! As for the interior, hey subies have always been referred to as a poor mans Porsche. If you want luxury interior go spend $100,000+. And what performance car buyer cares about fuel economy.....eh?
Hope you enjoyed your trip back home, didn't realise you are a kiwi boy. Lived in Auckland myself for awhile, in Whangarei now.
This new Subaru WRX is a car that you either hate or love... And i hate it. I absolutely HATE the way the exterior looks ... they should have just redesigned the previous version of the WRX just a little. This one does't look as aggressive or sporty... It looks rather boring, but as always great review ahah everyone has their preferences :p
Nick! Loved the review - have you ever driven a Legacy GT with the same Drivetrain? I'm biased towards the 4th gens, but the 5th is great as well (Or if the stars align, the coveted, mythical Spec B. ) - sadly, no GT for the 6th gens.... I'd love you to get your hands on a 4th/5th gen LGT, preferably with a downpipe and tune :) - The interior on the Legacy GT's would keep the haters quiet. Just my 2 cents, and have to publicly blast my love out for the Legacy GT as non-Subaru enthusiasts don't know anything about them :)
Also - glad you hit on the 2.5 EJ as being old - the new 2.0DIFA is showing great potential, much more linear, wider band for boost, and better fuel economy - I'd be interested in you testing a 2015 WRX, right after driving the STi with the EJ. - Spy shots of the current STi testing a new 2.0DIFA in an STi have been seen.....Ford releasing the RS will surely make Subaru step it's game up for the next facelift!
Great review, Nick. I especially liked the part about the driver controlled center diff and the effect it has on the car. I didn't appreciate the benefit of this until you explained it. Now I definitely prefer the sti over the wrx. In you experience how would the sti compare with the 981 cayman s, for twisty back road driving trips and general summertime driving. I enjoyed my Mazdaspeed mx5, but wanted the safety of the roof.
The Cayman S particularly the current model is one of the best drivers cars at any price. It is of course much more expensive than the STI but the build quality and driving experience are two different worlds.
Bro you forgot to mention the boxer engine, this layout produce very little body roll compared to the inline and v6.
I owned a '15 WRX, and agree somewhat on the interior but it is MUCH improved over the last gen WRX and STI, I mean a shitload.
Would love to see a review on the 2015 golf r which I think is the more refined alternative to this.
Yes I will do one of those soon
Nick Murray Great to know and great reviews as well, keep up the good work!
are you planning on reviewing the 2016 WRX? the new engine in there is pretty amazing
I am curious about the MPG. I wonder if that MPG is really that back, or if it's just the EPA is being over zealous again... I had a 2006 STi and I only got 17 MPG city when I was really boosting around town a lot, however I saw 19-21MPG most of the time, when I was driving mostly respectably, and I saw 28-29 MPG on the freeway like clockwork. So has the efficiency actually dropped off since 2006 or is the EPA simply being harsher in their grading?
The legendary boxer burble :) I like how neutral you can review a car like this, which no doubt is somewhat far away from your personal liking and car history, ie. German made fast saloons & sport cars.
Hey Nick! Another great review. I was considering an STi a few years ago, but, as you pointed out, the interior build quality is .... well, functional. When is a Tesla review coming? :)))
Thanks buddy! yes I have had a few false starts with the Tesla review but soon.
Boris, keep an eye out for events up at Lime rock, the owner of this STI would like to join you and I up there for a bit of a track day when you are free and the weather improves
Awesome! I will keep an eye out :)
I had the 2015 Limited STi when it was first released. The car performs well in colder climates but horrible in hot climates, no matter what gas I used. I did a ton of logging with my tuner while trying to troubleshoot a power loss issue with the brand new car and we found that the car suffers horribly in hot temperatures. This was not able to be "tuned" out either. It is understandable that a car will lose power in hotter climates but the amount that this unit lost was so horribly noticeable it ruined the experience.
I wonder if it is due to those headers and the reliance of the intercooler to be getting cool air
all cars lose power in hot climates.
ARGH28 I...uh...don't think anyone was contesting that.
Would a cold air intake help the power loss?
Don't think so. The intake temp in AZ is going to be stupid high during the summer regardless.
I think i like the old subarus a bit more cause they seemed to be so much hardcore cars, this one look like a normal family sedan made of plastic which will break in half on a first big bump.. but probably im wrong ;P It looks cool i like it and i hope im wrong about the plastic part and it is a hardcore car made of vibranium where you can drive full speed through every bump on the road and it will no break in half ;]
Still wish they had stuck with the design concept from the NY auto show!
Glad that it is only available with manual.
Good vid, Nick. The STi needs a major redesign.
Wow your videos just went up a league with that intro
I used to really love STIs back in the day when Mustangs only had 260 horsepower, but they want so much money for this now. You could have a much faster car for much less money. It makes me sad because I used to adore Subi's.
GadgetsNGear Just curious as to what cars that cost much less that is much faster than this STI? And faster in what ways?
Mustang GT with Performance Pack. Faster in a straight line and around a track. :/
RdGr12 I just looked and you actually own a '15 STI. Well at least respect for having the car that you're backing. So many kids on the internet standing up for cars they've never even seen in real life.
I was actually in the market for the 2015 Mustang GT performance package. Just not practical for what I need it for. These two cars are priced similarly. It's why I even considered it.
And I agree, it is fast in straight line and around track. The latter will depend on driver's ability. As the saying goes, "Straight roads are for fast cars. Turns are for fast drivers" - Colin McRae.
Not in to bashing games. Was just curious as to what you thought was faster for much less.
RdGr12 Not into bashing games either. I just know that Subaru can do better and have historically. It's too bad you're so far away. I'd be down for a car swap. Seem like a cool dude.
Best STI review EVER!!!!!!!!!!
yessss, japanese car at last! GT-R next? oh btw, your Sakhir orange M4 is becoming more special now since BMW don't offer that color anymore for 2015. =)
Yes I wonder if it will come back for the 2016 MY? No plans for a GT-R review, I am in two minds about ever doing one as I have no love for them. I think now that they are so dated and Nissan are pushing the even harder get the last little bit of performance out of them they have become even more unpleasant to drive. I would just have a hundreds of GT-R fans hating on me for not praising their god. : ) Still that might be fun!
I know it is out for our car now. I have to call up the m specialists at Rallye Bmw to find out about it. Hopefully I'm getting my car back tomorrow they were just waiting on spoiler. So I think I'm going to pay him a visit tomm if I get the car back like I should. I want to get this plug and play chip asap now. Tell me your thoughts buddy.
Christmas tree dashboard. so many colors!
Nick, I'll be expecting you to do a Ford RS review next year. :)
Nick, you have been forever ruined by Porsche and BMW M! It was hilarious watching you critique the interior of this Subaru knowing your background as a former Porsche and current M4 owner. Also, did you wash your hands after test driving this car? It's advisable considering the presence of STIs and C. dif.
this is the best review i've seen
Can't the STI also be in more of a front wheel drive way with the diff.
You should do a comparison between this and an evo
So did they drop the "Imprezza" name, or is this more based on the Legacy? Im not sure!
I almost went for one but i think the 04-07 is a better looking car but there's one of these everywhere I look so I bought a g37 Ipl
Nice review of a great car. You really nailed it with this one! But don't walk around with the camera for the exterior, I almost lost my lunch. PS - $40k is a hardly cheap... PPS - Lame there's no gorillas...
Very good review mr.nickledeon aka Nick "still high anyway on the highway" Murray ! My question is : which one is faster. The sti or the bmw 335 ?? Also which one handles better ? Whats your thought pal ?
Oh god your back. I would say it depends on where the race was, the 335 is much faster in a straight line and has a much higher top speed but in some conditions I am sure the STI will out corner/brake a 335i
Oh ok i see thx for the reply slim shady Nick ! Im glad you enjoy my mike tyson comeback loll
How does this one compare to M235i as far as power, road feel, etc?
appreciate you putting some japanese metal on the channel
What are those "parking lights" used for if you have normal daylights?
I have a feeling that this review is less detailed than previous ones ;C And you didn't showed us how the car sounds :(
But still love your work!
This is true, I left out the sound in editing by mistake.
Hi Nick,
very interesting, informative and thoughtful review. Well done. I've got a question though: does the Subaru feel like a RWD car on normal tarmac if you adjust the diff via switch gear? I'm just asking because on snow and slippery surfaces it's easy to get the back end come out. As I understood the car sends always power to all four wheels.
Yes correct no matter what, the car is still sending power to the front, but it will not just understeer like a most AWD will, if you press with the C-Diff all the way to the back it will steep out more than a standard AWD.
If only this came in a hatch still then it would be perfect for the boy racer with responsibilities
Sweet review nick! Although.. How would Subaru make their "Dumper" setup less hard?
Oh the spelling mistakes... that's how you know it is a real Nick video not one of those fake Nick videos....
Nice review, good to see you changing up from the executive type cars.
Now any chance you could look at the BRZ or the new MX-5?
Maybe, my focus is still on the more executive and high end sports cars as that is what I know more about and have access to. I think there are already a million reviews on the BRZ and will be for the MX-5 so it is less of a focus for me. I hope you understand : )
Nick Murray No worries,I'll be looking for a Jaguar f type so:)
Does the option of rear wheel drive and AWD available only on the Launch edition? Or also on the regular Sti model?
i love Subaru with dual exhaust
i have a stock gc8 my2000 wrx with a very low 30000ks on it i so want to sell it and upgrade to this!
They don't make the hatch anymore? We don't get it in uk
im getting 26mpg on my 08zo6 540 whp car
Hey, can someone reply to me as to whats a good used cheap sports car that doesnt need many modifications, im looking for something from 1995-2005 era, that can be considered a sports car, pref real wheel, that doesnt destroy your budged as I cant afford anything brand new.
Nice review! So this or Mustang GT? I know they're completely different but they're around the same price and I love both and can't decide.
Well I would tempted by the Mustang, you just get so much for your money.
All depending where you live, if you get snow in the winter than go for the Sti of not than a mustang is perfect
Hey Nick, we ever going to see you on 2 wheels?! Would make good drag race content
Most likely not, I was tried to do a review on a friends BMW 1200GS but I was just not happy with the results after I reviewed the footage. It is difficult to review a bike because I want to push the bike harder than I feel comfortable when it is not mine.
Nick Murray thanks Nick :)
Great review!
You could have talked a bit more of the pricing though... How much is it and what else can you get for that money. There is a HUGE reason why the interior sucks... You're paying for an awsome driveline and suspension and a motor that is just made to tune.
But as you said, it's a car for people with lots of garage space and a partner with a big car interest or great patience. :)
Yes I did not talk want to about the pricing because here in the US I don't think it has any rivals aside from the Mitsubishi Evo which will be gone soon. You could argue that there are a lot of other performance cars in this price range like the CLA45, Golf R and the Audi S3 to name a few but I doubt anyone would who is looking as say an S3 would also consider the STI. The STI is not an all rounder like the other modern cars, it is built to sell to one group of people that love it for what it is. Maybe I am wrong on that? What do you think?
Nick Murray I seriously doubt anyone considering a "refined Euro performance sedan/coupe" is even looking at an STi Subaru (or an Evo, but I don't think those are even available in Canada anymore).
It's two totally different mindsets. I like gravel and snow and variable boost aftermarket turbos, so I'd buy a Subaru. When your car is sideways, you don't care that some of the interior bits are crap :)
Nick, if you like aftermarket "treehouse" tweaking, check out an Aussie channel by the name of *Mighty Car Mods*. One of their latest projects was a Subaru Legacy/Liberty wagon mod called "Gramps". Nearly 300 kW out of a 3.4l custom-turbo flat-6! :)
Anyhoo, great video, and thanks for branching out into "hoonland". ;)
Nick Murray I agree. I was just thinking for fun but in the same time I agree that it's stupid to even compare this car to, say an Audi, since it may mislead some people to think that it's a relevant comparison. Which it isn't.
Keep up the good work! :D
Hey Nick, I just watched a Mk 7 Golf R and a WRX STI drag race, and the Golf R was way faster (They are both stock). I found that the STI gets 290 lbs/ft torque at 4000 rpm but the Golf R gets 1800 lbs/ft torque at 1800 rpm. Do you think that's why? And why do Japanese cars always get their peak torque at such high rpm?
+calvinm “Cal” 213
Turbo selection, depends on the turbo set up, they all use small displacement engines so more boost at low rpm means more torque, also the golf r probably revs lower,
there are numerous factors.
golf R uses dual clutch too which means no driver error and no respool between shifts, though dual clutch is problematic where manual is slower but a lot more fun and more reliable.
also a manual STi isn't the easiest car to drive, takes a lot of skill.
where the golf r is effortless
Hi Nick, great review! How is the trunk space in the STi compared to the M4, especially wondering about the opening. I have an M4 as well and can't fit my stroller into it without taking the wheels off. Any better in the STi?
Hmmm I don't know sorry I did not measure it.
Thanks Nick, don't worry about it. It's not very interesting information for a car video. Only to me at this time since I have an STi on order and could't test drive it anywhere. Here they are sold out until September if you want a new one.
I liked the exterior part
Cables from central rear view mirror? What for?
I like the car but it doesn't seem that fast or maybe I have to be in it to experience how fast it is. 0-60 in under 5 seconds is good for me but it just didn't seem like it is faster then any other car.
Very honest review. Love it! thanks.
Hey nick carter which one is faster a e90 n55 2011 335 or a s4 b8 supercharged v6 ?? Let me know in the comments below mr.nick low blow yo still super nice vids tho !
I don't know, it would be so close, if I were to guess I think it would be the S4 because they are sneaking out more power than claimed in the latest ones.
The new camera is awesome, but I notice it's blowing out the highlights -is that intentional?
More to do with the camera man not having a clue I think : )
Said in a Inspector Clouseau voice "where is the minkey?" nice vid like the rawness of the walk round. like the channel some good vids. don't say Subaru like that it sounds *insert insult of choice here*.
There is something very unfortunate about the designation "STI". (It actually stands for "Subaru Tecnica International".)
22:25 The WRX STI is definitely not the car for me. Harsh ride, noisy, rattly, and thirsty....ugh. (I recently rode in a normal Impreza and came away with a similar impression.) I would readily sacrifice the AWD and some performance, for the comfort, refinement and utility of a Golf GTI, and maybe even save a few thousand dollars in the process.
I would be interested in a review of the VW Jetta GLI.
I cannot say I'm tickled pink by this car.
Get your ape in an M6 convertible. Not too many in depth reviews on that.
If you review an M6, with competition package, convertible I promise to leave an in depth comment.
Thanks
Yes I plan to to do an M6 review mid year.
I've heard that the WRX could be a better choice with the new engine and all that.
+Cosmin296 The initial reasoning of the WRX and STI variants still holds true in that the WRX is a better daily driver and the STI is more performance oriented. With the STI you get Brembo brakes, better chassis, fully adjustable DCCD, inverted struts, various improved bits and pieces such as the beefier lower control arms, very strong 6 speed transmission with LSDSs all around and a motor that has a booming mod community (You can literally have a fully built, assembled, fully closed short block delivered to your door step on a pallet).
Hey nick sorry I am not sure if you remember me. I got the Bmw white m4 like yours. And I was telling you how I originally was getting your color but went with white instead. Anyways this girl got me from behind on the pkwy!!!! Should be getting car back tomm. They said they put on the m4 carbon fiber exhaust diffuser for me instead of the stock one ?? Not sure what that is hopefully I will see Tomm. Anyways I think I'm going to look into the plug and play chip for our car .... Do you know anything about it ? I heard it's like 700 bucks and adds around 50 horsepower and 50 torque. I think you should look into it also! We will be pulling up next to the m5 and m6s and they would have no idea that we would be smoking them if we just do that little plug and play chip to our car lol. Not that I even care to race anymore I just think it's a great bargain for our car. Our m4s with almost 500 horsepower and 500 torque. Would be beastly. Do you think ? Anyways I never check back to see if you respond if you have any info on what I'm talking about or want me to find out for you. Email me at eddie@cornellgi.com. I am a customs broker and trucking company at New York. Thanks.
Thanks Eddie I will email you
They haven't even released the hatch version yet
In Colorado, almost everyone has a Subaru with a bike rack on top.
Marty Lynchian i'm moving to Colorado after reading this comment.
Subaru+ Bikes= Life
'You should drive a 'Matsubishi uvo' next.
do a m5/f10 review please
