I dumpster dived at the trailer park all the time. A courtyard of 8 dumpsters, it was like heaven. The dumpsters belong to the waste company, it's their property. But they do not care about the garbage, only the dumpster itself. As long as you do not vandalize their dumpster, you are in the clear with them. Now the store, the dumpster is on, the bin enclosure or parking lot is their property, so if it's locked, do not break it open. It's up to the store if they care or not about divers. As many idiots that keep making these dump hauls public they will start locking their dumpsters. Regardless, the proper way to do it is to get in there, grab as much as you can out of the dumpster and put it in your car (renting a UHAUL van is a better idea, then if someone calls the police you can just say you were moving and needed more boxes. uhaul vans also have side-entry doors), and then take the stuff to your garage and cut the bags open and pick through the items there, and whatever is trash just re-bag and throw in your own garbage. You pick through the stuff on-scene you increase your exposure to getting caught or someone hearing you.
