The Tudor Black Bay and Pelagos range are two watch models that are dominating the watch world, so I thought it would be fun to compare the Tudor Black Bay 58 Blue compared with the Tudor Pelagos Blue. These two watches are some of the best and most affordable dive watches.

Nothing in stock at my Rolex shop here in Christchurch , New Zealand but , it''ll be here in a few days . Can't wait. I'm a happy man even though I haven't seen it yet. Some 50+ yrs ago as a military combat diver , I was issued a Tudor submariner that I still have . Until the birth of dive computers, watches were obviously a critical peice of dive gear . Even now , when I go diving , the superstitious part of me makes a dive watch a must . I always use my trusty Rolex submariner as I'm comforted by the knowledge of a backup if batteries or some unforseen occurance should happen . A lesson well learned 50 yrs ago in combat dive school is " one is none ". The Tudor Pelegos looks to be a watch that could easily fulfill that secondary backup role. Anyway, great video as always. Keep 'em coming.

Ive had my Pelagos for 3 years. Its my go to watch for day to day. Still looks brand new and Im a plumber/gas fitter. I wear it daily and it doesnt look used at all. My Omega's and my Rolli would never put up with this use and abuse. The bracelet extension is great too. As the day gets on, my wrists get swelled up, the extension kicks in daily for comfort and makes it that much easier and better to wear for me. I dont think Ill ever sell it or trade it. It truly is an amazing watch.

I've had my BB58 for a few months now and couldn't be happier. I understand the dislike of the faux rivets, but I never notice them when the watch is on my wrist (and note: I stare at it constantly...). I swim with the watch. I take the watch to the beach, on camping trips, but also wear it with tailored clothing. Getting a Pelagos would just be too superfluous - the 58 is already a great weekender...

I have had my BB58 black for 2 weeks and I couldn’t agree more. Rivets don’t bother me and I don’t notice them either. Pelagos is too big for me... what I need is a bronze 58, I would happily add that to the collection.

I'm on my 4th week with my BB58 Blue, haven't taken it off my wrist since I got it on at the AD, it's that good. The rivets bother me to be honest, but once on the wrist you don't pay attention to them, unless when you do and then you think "argh... fking rivets tudor.. why..." and then I move on.
It's running 0,3 seconds fast per 24 hours, VERY impressive. Measured over 1 week! It has been with me everywhere, hiking, in the pool and I'm currently building a completely new kitchen with it on my wrist. Have knocked it a few times, it has a few marks already, no bother, that's what a tool-watch is for and why I bought it. I'm not going to "baby" it like I do with my other Rolexes.

I'm literally deciding between these two right now! Perfect timing for this video, Adrian! I sold a black Pelagos a few years ago and it's the only watch I miss. I like the dimensions of BB 58, but the dial of the Pelagos is breathtaking... People won't like this, but the BB 58 just looks like a sub, basically, and the millions of other watches that have a similar aesthetic to the dial. The Pelagos is truly unique, even though we've seen those elements before in other watches of Tudor's past, never combined in that way with those materials. And you're right about versatility, not too important once you have more than one or two watches.

The Pelagos bracelet doesn't auto adjust for your wrist, but for a wet suit. The springs are too tight for it to "float" on your wrist. Believe it or not, I found that I could never get quite the right fit with the Pelagos. Always too tight or too loose. What they need more than the spring system, is a couple more notches before the spring system.

"..Can't wear a watch on the right wrist - it doesn't feel natural..." This made me smile because I've just bought a Pelagos LHD - which is specifically designed for the right wrist :-D
(Of course I know where Adrian is coming from - I'm not sure I'd want it as my only watch. But as part of a collection it adds something a little quirky and different to the mix. And it's a little beast of a watch too - an individually numbered series with some little nods to Tudor's vintage watches made for the French Navy in the 1960s and 70s.)

      Hi,
The LHD isn't designed specifically to be worn on the right wrist, that's just an added bonus.
The idea is it's still worn on left wrist and the crown & guards don't dig in to the wrist when working with the watch on.
Either way it's an awesome watch and on my list to buy next.

It is for sure tougher than a Submariner. The modern Sub (and Sea-Dweller too) is really a quasi-dress watch nowadays. In some areas (like central London) you also put yourself at real risk of being violently robbed if you visibly wear a Rolex on the streets. (These days my Rolexes are in the safe 99% of the time, sad to say.)

I was exactly considering between these two watches and always preferred the BB58 during my research. But you definitely have to try them in the store! The 58 just felt a bit too boring to me. The aluminium bezel and no crown guards doesn't make it rugged enough as I like to wear my watches daily for every occasion and they have to endure some scratches but still look good. Also I loved that the Pelagos uses titanium and has a sophisticated clasp and the lumed ceramic bezel. From the size the Pelagos suits my bigger wrist quite well so I just went for it spontaneously (the biggest purchase I ever made besides my car, lol).

Having said that I have only sold one watch I was sold. That is a sore point. I thought I was mentally strong. Somehow a Omega AD managed to talk me into buying the 'Omega Commander's Watch'. Hi Adrian, great video I purchased a black Pelagos 42 in Sept. I wasn't sure at the time if I was going to like it as much as I should. The edges of the case were a little sharp around the crown and the bezel was very stiff. I have worn it every day for 3 months and it has become my daily watch. The bezel, with a little work, has loosened up to be functionable with gloves. With a 70 hr power reserve it really doesn't need to be wound. I have come to appreciate the titanium used in the watch as I also like a watch with weight of steel. This watch is really of better quality than expected as I wore it. All in all, it has surpassed my expectations. Keep up the great work.

I really wish there was a bigger clamour for thinner watches rather than smaller diameter watches. I really don't mind any diameter between 39 and 44mm, but the *thickness* of watches like the Pelagos is what puts me off (but not entirely given how cool I think it looks). Also, I'd love to see you do a video or even just a photo set of the Blue BB on different strap colours and materials. The visual quality of your channel is brilliant.

The Pelagos is designed for saturation divers and yes we dive them I have Omega Seamaster and I use it. A lot of my saturation diving workmates have Rolex Seadwellers and yes they dive them that is what they are for, saturation divers, and the Helium escape valve for us is very useful. When in decompression in the chamber and not in the water the valve allows the helium to escape from the watch and stops you from popping the glass out of your watch. I have done this with an old Omega without a Helium escape valve. We were in our beds and they decided to decompress us and didn't want to wake us up, so in the morning I found my watch in bits. If you don't want a Helium escape valve buy the 58.

I don't see many people talk often about the detent to zero the bezel without looking. That to me is one of the coolest features of the Pelagos. Not sure if it exists on the BB as I've never tried one on. As someone who uses the bezel to time almost everything the detent is more useful to me than the expanding bracelet. Great video mate, Thanks!

I agree with your assessment that the BB 58 is a watch to look good and not necessarily to go diving. The Pelagos, however, is a proper dive watch which I started using during recent dives as a backup device after having tried many of the other Diver’s from Seiko, Oris, G-Shock. It‘s an absolute tool watch with perfect material, size, lume and weight for the purpose. Although I don’t need 500 m WR and helium escape valve, it’s reassuring to know that the watch has plenty of reserves when going down the deep. After having passed the honeymoon period, I believe that I finally found the perfect Diver I was searching for. Love your content!

Another great video Adrian. I personally have a Pelagos and love it. I also dive with it and find it one of the best dive watches I’ve ever owned. At depth it’s still very easy to read as the blue and white is a great contrast underwater. I’m not a saturation diver so the helium escape valve isn’t something I need. The BB58, looks a great watch too, not something I’d buy because I don’t need it in my collection but if someone gave me one, I’d still keep it and wear it as it looks a great watch.

Hi Adrian, your channel and one other are the only two that i dont skip ads to show my support. Keep up the good work!
There are less people wearing watches now than there were before. Those that do wear watches, there are more people that have 1 watch for all occasions than there are those that own 2 or more watches or watch collectors.
To non-watch fans or non-watch lovers, Rolex are generally perceived as old man's watch where smart watches such as Apple watches are for younger generation. Most likely why Rolex's new OP line are so colorful and youthful.
My question is: With less people wearing watches, Apple Watch taking a big slice in the market, Millenials and Gen Z not seeing the allure of mechanical watches, do you think within the next 20-30 years, most big watch houses will get consolidated or no longer exists?

    • @BarkandJack
      @BarkandJack  3 роки тому

Thanks a lot Paul. I really appreciate the support 🙌🏻
I’ve not heard of fewer people wearing watches. Last I heard was that the Apple Watch was having a positive impact on the traditional watch companies as it’s easier to sell a watch to someone who wears a watch than someone who doesn’t. And the Apple Watch us getting more people wearing watches.
My information could be old though.
It’s always sad when companies have to close, but only poorly run companies close. The good ones will survive.
      It’s an interesting thought though.

I have surfed, dived and been spear fishing with omega planet ocean, skx, Oris 65, Sinn U50. All work fine. Even though the pelagos is more hardcore I’m sure even the bb58 could handle anything short of helium/saturation diving

Although I wear a watch on my left wrist, if I got a Pelagos it would be the LHD model. There are two reasons: 1) I'd like that crown on the left side of the watch, keeping it away from the back of the hand, and 2) I really like the roulette date wheel. I think the vintage colourway is nice too, I guess that's 3 reasons, right.

I’ve had both of these, the Pelagos in black mind you, and definitely used it as a titanium everyday beater. The problem was that it was too chunky for everyday, the titanium held sweat a little too noticeably on the underside of the bracelet, and I always wished it was something it wasn’t. Design-wise it’s one of the most incredibly executed original designs out there and worth every penny. I just kept wanting it to be a Tudor snowflake sub and it can’t ever be that. Unless they shrink the dimensions down to roughly the size of the 58 it could tick many of the same boxes. The 58 was good but never fully comfortable with that one-trick-pony clasp. It really needs to adjust on the fly. I sold both and have a 116610ln now and I don’t miss either of them. It bests them both in each of their strengths. Except the bezel clicking motion on the Pelagos is exceptional. You can find the 12 o’clock position with your eyes closed, it’s very elegant and satisfying.

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding in the watch community about diving with watches. I own a Pelagos and dive with it. It has held up perfectly fine, no issues with it at all after hundreds of dives. Why do I do this? Because I don’t want to leave a 3,000+ dollar watch on my boat or in my car while I am diving. I often times go straight from work and dive, I need something that I can wear to my desk job, and then while diving for lobsters. So as a serious diver, I never buy a watch that I am unwilling to dive with.
