King, who smoked cigars (a fact that came up in his routines from time to time), died at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan on May 9, 2004, from lung cancer. He was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing, Queens. He is survived by his wife.
Flash from the past! In my early 20's, I was an usher on the Ed Sullivan show and Alan was a frequent guest. Got to see him many times and he was always a very likable and friendly person off stage, very well liked by all who worked with him. Use to kid with us ushers often, as did Jonathon Winters who would come down and keep us all in stitches. Our favorite! Great people, Bless them both!
Alan King a true trail blazing comedian beating a path for so many to follow. Having seen and heard him many times the delivery and personality is very special and above all you laugh.
Had the great fortune living in Las Vegas to have a chance encounter with Alan King at the bar at The Palm Restraurant. We traded jokes...what an amazing talent...RIP
Still sharing this with so many that have never heard this classic comedy skit that will live forever. What a testament to all those early comedians that had to be funny and pc correct at the same time
If anyone's interested, the West Point graduate mentioned in this brilliant performance is Brigadier General Louis Meredith Nuttman and he was indeed survived by his wife (he died in 1978) although she was only 96 when she died. She was thirteen years his junior but died five years after him in 1983.
I love that bit. I remember it from childhood. It’s still hilarious today. It’s funny because it’s true. It’s also just so ironically great that he was survived by his wife. perfect
One of great comedians; Jack Benny, Jonathan Winters, Jack E. Leonard, Don Rickles, and of course, Alan King. King, Winters, Leonard, were great routine (story) tellers; Benny, Rickles, and sometimes, Leonard were famous for one liners or very short routines. And, King and Benny were also famous and rightly so, for their charitable work over the years. This is one of his most famous routines; done many times over the years both live and on broadcast, still i never get tired of hearing it.
This is a true story. In the summer of 1987 I used to routinely get off the air at WNSR and stop by the US open during the first week or so of play. Using my press credentials and thanks to very lax security back then, I would get in every day around 11-1130a and be able to sit wherever I wanted and watch tennis. And so one day, I kept moving down and moving down until I ended up in Alan King’s box. And literally it was the front row, end court. I literally could like breathe down Martina’ neck. And so I'm sitting there in Alan King’s box, front row and it was a box of nine seats, three rows of 3 each. And after an hour or so, I smell cigar smoke (you could smoke there in those days) and I turn around and Alan King is sitting right behind ME in HIS own box. And I turned around and I said, “oh Mr. King, I'm so sorry… please let me get up and he said, “no you stay there. When my wife comes, will switch. And when she arrived I offered to leave entirely and he told me to stay and enjoy. I thought that said a lot about him.
Alan King contributed to modern comedy by talking conversationally not just in set up punchline. He also found personal life and reality funny not just manufactured scenarios. Both are great styles. Just feel he never got the credit for pushing comedy towards reality and truth
Do you know if this is a true story or just one of Alan King's comedy bits. Whether or not it is true, it's great. He perfomed this bit as part of the "sit down conversation" on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show sometime in the early 80s.
Classic. And the kicker, of course, is the note that King himself was survived by his wife of 52 years.

Wow died so close to the incredible Tony Randall.

Was one of those obits for Ludwig von Mises, or am I mistaken? He did die at age 92. When was this recorded?

If I live to be 120 I pray I’ll be survived by my wife.
Just super
very funny.
Someone on his Wikipedia page has a sense of humor, haha.
Hilarious !
I believe it has to do with the fact that men tend to marry younger women most of the time.
Back when King did this schtick divorce was less prominent.
