Why is HP counted higher than Torque? Considering the weight of the trucks plus what the intended use for towing, hauling and off-roading where torque is more important.
Im a certified tech and been for over 30 years. I work in an independent shop and work on all brands of vehichles. We have several customers with tundras and dozens of customers with f150s... The toyotas most common problems are the bushings that mount the rack and pinion. They get old and brittle and cause a bump steer issue and some movement in the steering wheel when you hit bumps. Alternators and radiators are the next most common problem I see with the tundras I maintain. F 150s most common problems are everything.... I have never had a tundra blow spark plugs out of the head, bust spark plugs off in the head, have fuel drivers fall right the fuck off the truck, have 3rd brake light water leaks from 04-2015 , have vacuum hubs that fail all the time, wires so brittle they are all broken at the door hinges to no windows open, GEM's that constently fail causing security no start problems, front end geomotry that destroy tires no matter where you set the camber ane toe, $300 battery cables that corrode inside out and fail all the time, transmission lines that need to be replaced 99% of the time you swap a radiator, oil filters you can't even get a wrench or hand on, exhaust manifold bolts that constantly break off in the heads....Every single eco boost pile of shit I work on has coolant pouring out the turbos , thats why ford puts that nice fabric skid plate ( diaper) on all there new products, it keeps the owner from realizing they bought a leaking piece of shit.... Toyota is not near as reliable as they were in the 80s-90s but they are a hell of a lot better than ford garbage. Ford does ONE thing well....They have mastered the art of selling an inferior product to brand loyal idiots who don't know what a quality product is...Do you know why the f150 is the best selling truck? Because they fail and you have to buy a new one....( and they offer huge fleet bonuses to get rid of their junk, dodge and GM don't have to ).. They fail to the point that it is not economicaly wise to repair the pile o shit much sooner than any other truck in America....
Iihs crash safety test have proven ford has what it takes to keep people safe.. so I think this is a bias opinion also the Ford you seen may have been pushed through thier limits cause more people buy ford then Toyota of course your going to see alot of ford's being serviced cause the fact It's the drivers fault of not taking care of it.. God forbid the manufacturer has something to do with it but maybe the fact you see ford in your shop more is because it does sell well cuase people trust it more then the tundra cause the tundra can't pull half as good as a ford does its why people are scared to pull either a Toyota.. I grantee if you pull about 10,000 to 12,000 with a Toyota the Toyota will not survive.. the Ford does pull that much now in the 2018 truck and can do it with no hassle, I like the tundra but I highly doubt it would survive the towing and payload challenge.

You're going to get hate for stating the truth. Toyota is and WANT to be known for being reliable. That's why they are the biggest manufacturer who are still not putting turbos in their car (in NA at least), wait a long time to introduce android carplay / apple, that's also why they hold on to older tech for a longer time - and it does pay off. I'd rather have a 10 years old toyota than a ford/gm/dodge anyday.
OK. At the end of the day I'm going with the Tundra. I've been down the ford road and it always went to the repair shop. Resale and dependability is what you get with the Tundra.
So did I. Hands down Tundra is the most reliable truck!! hence million mile trucks they have. And HOLD their value. Fords do have more technologies than Tundra... but thats why they're always in the shop!!! Don't believe me... just take a ride to your local Ford dealership and have a look of how many they have to fix!! Then goto Toyota... yep, not many to none!!! Just performing routine maintenance. I've purchased the 1794 model.

2009 F150 FX 4. Driven with total miles of 98,000 mi. Transmission replaced at 75k and a host of other problems. A 2007 Tundra from Lafayette, LA that rolled over 1 million mi in 2016 only 1 issue that manifested at 750k mi. Toyota retrieved the truck from the owner in exchange for a brand new Tundra. Don't believe me? Google it yourself. I'm in the process of trading my F150 for a 2018 Tundra. Say what you must but the proof is in the puding.
I had a 2007 fx4. Beautiful truck. Transmission went at 100,000 km. Engine timing chain guide broke around the same time. Miss firing and the amount of money to fix it was not worth it. Junk.

Went with a 2016 Silverado over a 2016 Tundra 3.5 years ago, and it was a mistake. I was dazzled by the fancier truck, which is the case here with the F-150 vs the Tundra. Had transmission problems right off the bat, and I hated it so much that I traded it for another Silverado (2018) with an upgraded engine and transmission (6.2L/8Speed), which was a HUGE improvement. However, 8400 miles later the transmission started leaking all over my garage floor, ended up spending 2 weeks in the shop to get fixed. That's when I was over the fancy bullshit features these trucks have over the Tundra, and started paying attention to what really mattered most, well built and extremely RELIABLE drive trains. That's what the Tundra has over all of these other truck brands. So that's what mattered most to me this time around. Made a smart decision this time and Traded the 2018 Silverado in for a 2020 Tundra. Didn't even bother looking at Ram and F-150. The price differences between them are not justified, and this is just based on the simple fact that their drive trains are inherently INFERIOR to that of the Toyota Tundra. You can't polish a turd with glam and glitter and expect to get away with it long term. Tundra for the win!

They are coming out with even a boxer engine in 2019 . 150s are optional for diesel now , and ford makes a 6.2, way better than the 5.7... by the way the new boxer engine will get 37 Mpg.. if you get a 150 diesel it will have 45 mpg. Just do the switch to ford, join us 😈
The engine may last, but the shit supporting the engine doesn't. I had BOTH turbos go out by 65k miles. I dont tow, and i sure as hell dont abuse my truck but nevertheless, 2 turbos. one was covered under warranty, the other cost me 5k .
@yea bouy I had the 5.0 coyote engine in a f150 as well. Strong engine for sure, but not as level as the 5.7. The 5.0' power band kicks in around 35 mph, the 5.7 is consistent throughout. The 5.0 coyote is probably fords best gas engine in 20 years.
@yea bouy you're looking at a drag race perspective. I'm saying the 5.7 is the most level powered throughout acceleration out of all of them. That 700lbs DOES make a huge difference though. Cant take that from Ford, great design. Again, the coyote 5.0 is the best engine but it absolutely has a power band you feel, where the 5.7 you cant. Its flat.
Reliably get shit mpg(9 mpg, 6 mpg when towing lol) reliably rust into pieces in 3-4 years, reliably tow less, and reliably are the king of suck. Toyota trucks are a JOKE. Your Fords actually do real work, those Yotas are yuppy "look i'm a man that reads consumer reports" trucks. Nobody buys them to actually haul anything.

Andy's Shop not meaning to bump an old thread but respectfully Toyota v8 doesn’t have enough years under its belt to be considered reliable. They do have a few years of rust. Few of recalls because of sticking gas pedals. So I don’t think you can realistically say more reliable.
You’d be surprised, but some used F150s cost more than new ones with the discounts. It’s actually irritating to me personally, but it gives more inventive to buy new. Which is probably why F150s are the best selling trucks
Tundra will last longer and less expense. Design is not the issue, quality and reliability is matter the most. The more they upgrade the more expense it will cost to repair.
For everyone here who says one truck is better then the other you have to realise it's not a luxury vehicle ! It's a truck made for working and if I'm pulling a boat on a muddy hill down to a public access I'm deffenitly choosing a v8 over a ford mustang engine in a truck that's like a skinny guy carrying a fat chick pistons going to go out for sure oil burning turbo compartments turbo oil leaks it's going to be a higher maintenance in the long term for the legendary f150 while the 5.7 tundra is straight forward with a basic v8 for me I don't have time for turbo maintenance and the expensive price to maintain a dual turbo...

Michael Mullen for towing I'd get a cummins ram 3500...we use one for work to pull our mini excavator and cat 299 skid steer (not at same time ofcourse)..it's nice..but I was talking as an everyday reliability stand point..
A good friend of mine sold her f350 powerstroke for a tundra to haul her goose horse trailer. lol she loves it and she loves that the base model looks better the ford base model
Private Number I’ve owned probably eight or nine new Fords down through the years and I have never needed a warranty repair. And back when we were poor we drove our Fords to 300,000 miles before we traded them and never had an engine or transmission give out. Only dealt with a couple of minor issues.
Ironically enough I'm trading my 2011 F-150 for a Tundra tomorrow. I only have 80k miles on it and I'm the type of person that likes to drive em' till they drop. This Ford has been a heaping pile o' sheet. It burns oil, water collects in the passenger door every time it rains, transmission slips and now the blower on my AC is making a tapping noise, so I've had it. I'll take reliability over anything else that Ford says they offer.

You also have the option to drop down a couple trim levels on the F-150 to the Lariat package, which has all the essentials to include leather seats. F-150 Lariat is closer to this Tundra's price point.
It's not 12k more when comparing apples to apples. Drop down a model and choose the options that match up the best with the Tundra and you're very close in price with a vehicle that has a much more recent update. Just opting for the naturally aspirated V8 which is more comparable to the Tundra V8 will take a major chunk off the F150 price tag. I have no idea why the reviewer chose the trim levels and engine the way he did. It's almost like he was trying to give the Tundra a head start.
I would say they forgot some benefits of the tundra though. Things like the 10.5 rear end and 9.5 front diff with 4.30s in them. And yes they are both vented disc but the tundra has 13.9" brakes and the front is fixed 4 piston calipers. Also it uses a key but the tundra has bump start, you just bump the key to start it and it turns over on its own
In the end it all comes down to who do you trust more Toyota or Ford? If you had good experience with the Ford why would you buy a Toyota? I get that. Yes, Fords have a lot more features, and bells and whistles that you cannot get on Tundra. Ford wins hands down in that category. If you value your money you will choose a Toyota. That is what I did despite acknowledging that Ford had better acceleration, better features, better looks I still bought a Toyota. I just don't trust Ford. Look at the history of recalls and you will understand what I am talking about here. If you like spending your time at the dealership while they do the next recall on your truck then by all means get a Ford.
848 dislikes by the ford buyers who realized the 6 banger doesn't last as long as the tundra motor. Turbos are more expensive to maintain and they wear out the motor much faster....especially. 6 banger pushing all that weight. And lets not even discuss the transmission problems and costs to repair it vs the Tundras legendary near bullet proof transmissions. Toyota is the far better choice here. Unless you like more stuff to break.. Then go for the ford.
And something else no one really mentions is the tundra is very overbuilt. Sure it’s dated as fuck and is basically 10 years old going on 11 but it’s built like a 3/4 ton more than the 1/2 ton class it’s in. Parts are built to last and it can tow above the “rating” also.
PWDT4R It's a beast. Tows my 10k boat better than my 07 Cummins did and pulled a 21k 5th wheel no problem. Ford has made great strides, but it seems like a lot of unnecessary bells and whistles.
There's nothing that comes close to making it three quarter ton. It has a dismal 1600 lb payload and a motor comparable to most half tons. Engine is reliable and will run a long, long time with good maintenance but rest of truck will have disintegrated with rust by 80-100k.
Not including the Tundras reliability is a major goof. Mile for mile the Tundra (regardless of JD Powers outdated reviews) would easily give it the lead.
Car confections, you screwed up the engine part, the 3.5 ecoboost in the 2018 F-150 has 470 Lb ft of torque, not 420, so it has A LOT more torque than the Tundra, plus the torque is more usable, peak torque for the 3.5 comes at 3500 rpm, which is at a lower rpm than on the tundra's V8, the ford should have gotten the point for the engine, the ecoboost is all around, a better engine.
Ford Ecoboost engine = vapor lock, limp mode. Look it up, Ford has a class action lawsuit on this issue right now since so many owners are having this major issue. Crap engine.
MrSharpshooter06 There is reason why Toyota has put a V8 in their big trucks not on their sedans. Because Trucks take more abuse than a sedan and smaller engine will crack way before the bigger V8. Ask your local mechanics about the trouble with Ecoboost engines and their turbos.
08 Tundra 229,000 Replaced Battery and Alternater, Brake Rotors and Pads twice, just replaced 2 fuel ratio sensors and both O2 sensors, 2 cats . Wouldn't Own any Thing Else . One Hell of a Truck . 20 mpg highway . 13 pulling a Load . If it didn't have a speed limiter it Will Out Run Damn near all Comers .
Ford was the first to make pickups into production and kept improving over those years. And of course you see them everywhere they're the #1 selling truck for a reason.
When I was looking for a used tundra there was dozens of semi new Ford in every dealership they where practically giving them away even with lifts and decked out...hell to the no...lol
Here's my list of all the things I care about in a truck. 1.) Reliable/affordable 2.) Will it haul my kayak safely 3.) Ac 4.) V-8 I don't need heated tailgates, or muffler lights just give me a reliable, affordable truck.
My f150 has had a plethora of problems and I'm only at 82k miles. Some problems were stretched timing chain, ac compressor, oil pan gasket, water pump, 1 bad turbo, head gaskets leaking and more. I will be trading it in for a tundra or 4runner as soon as i get it back from the shop.

Both truck are very nice truck, but I would never buy the f150. I have the 2011 tundra and not having any problems with it. People that I know drove the f150 and it give them nothing but in and out of the shop.
This is one of the best black and white reviews I have ever seen. I am a Toyota guy thru and thru but it is really good to know what the tundra doesn’t have. Toyota does really need to do some upgrading.

I disagree totally. I owned a 07 Limited and now own a 16 Ford. Yes you could feel the weight difference but sync 3 keeps disconnecting from my phone mid song. With my towing package with the v8 it is terrible compared to how the Tundra pulled. My Ford feels literally gutless. One thing she didn't mention, but if you aren't a truck person you wouldn't notice is the truck bed. The Ford yes is sprayed but it is in sections. There are 1/8" cracks between these sections like around the wheel well and dust will fill it up. I had to use caulking to fill it. Also the lift gate doesn't seal either. Its frickin awful. Now talking about the Ecoboost. My dealer said not to buy those motors because of reliability issues. You look at any "lemon" books on reliability and Tundra is top end. Resale value I can attest to as well. I purchased my 07 Tundra for 31995 Canadian in 2011 and in 2016 got 22900 for it. Resale value is also where you make money. I am 99% sure I'll be going back to Toyota even though my Ford dealer is great. I'm just hoping the new design comes out before that and they put the 5.0 V8 from the Lexus RCF in it revamped for truck use and a new tranny with more speeds.

Michael Mullen I own the trailer. Not just one bad run. Plus 12,000 is only with certain configurations. That would be with the 3.73 rear end not the 3.55 with the towing package.
Ford has aluminum body and weighs less is which why it can town more. That's also why I can rip a fender off that truck with my hands. Who makes a truck out of brittle materials
In a nutshell: F150 is more comfy and luxurious than Tundra is. Cool! The environment where you have to spend your time waiting for the tow-truck is important. Which is pretty nice from Ford... I think.
Reliability is a no brainer. The Tundra wins that hands down. The cost to replace the Fords turbos is about $4000 PER turbo. Which they will fail if you do any, yes any towing. Those tiny little turbos are not meant to spool under load for an extended amount of time. The reason you don't hear jokes about Toyotas breaking down, is because toyotas dont. break. down.
Great comparison, both are great trucks. I’ve owned 3 Tundras since 2007. My current truck is a 2015 TRD Pro. I get 11.9 mpg with my Nitto Trail Grappler tire upgrade. The nav system is outdated and I have to push the “tow/haul” button to get a responsive feel through the throttle. With that being said, Ford has gotten way too proud of their trucks in pricing. The reason Ford is the best selling truck in North America is due to fleet sales. Look at any big city parks and recreation or street department vehicles. All Ford trucks... Ford has chosen to pass those government and municipal discounts on by raising prices for the public.

I have owned both the Tundra '17 and Ford F-150 EcoBust '12 the comparisons are not even close. Tundra outperforms F-150 in every way with the exception of MPGs and towing weight Bottom line Ford was always in the shop the Tundra was not.
Toyota dependability is subjective. I have a 1999 Landcruiser with the 4.7L V8 with 155K. Dependable yes - perfect no. It is on its third starter - which for some dumb ass reason is between the engine and the firewall which means $ 600.00 labor to get the damn thing out. So that is $900.00 there x 2. And a throttle body for a cool $1K installed. I never expected those types of repairs on a Toyota. And this was built in Japan - not Texas.
Fair enough review. You always get more features with Fords and the new one looks really nice. Toyota's tend to be more utilitarian but reliable as an anvil and underrates their towing and carrying capacity. I have had trucks with a much higher capacity on paper but out on the highway the Tundra felt more in control and the six-speed with the thumb shifter makes the downhills steady and predictable.
My grandpa bought a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT with the 3.3L engine in blue jeans color for $42,000 doesn’t have the big screen or the fancy stuff but it has everything else and has tinted windows, tonnel cover, and step guards were added as dealer accessories. The truck has auto start, stop feature.
As you said right at the beginning, the Tundra is an 11 year old truck and the F-150 is 3 years old with a substantial refresh for this year . That's more than enough for me. There's a reason Ford outsells all others and trucks like Tundra barely figure in the truck battle. One other thing to consider is the Tundra model reviewed is the top offering while the F-150 model is 2nd from the top.
Thank you for Posting! What all these UA-cam channels should compare is a F-150 vs. Tundra with 50,000 miles. By this time, you will be on your second or third check engine light with a Ford and the Tundra doesn't even get new spark plugs until 120,000 miles! Tundra does all the things a 1/2 ton truck should - comfy, reliable, and it doesn't have so many features that break. Its quieter during the ride, suspension is superior, and engine is literally tried and true. Before you judge, I purchased a 2018 F-450 Platinum Brand New ($80K) off the shelf at Brandon Ford. After 1-week and 250 miles, first check engine light...after trip to the dealer, another check engine light, then again. Three before 1,200 miles. Ford ended up buying the Truck Back due to Florida Lemon Law. They gave me a F-150 as a loaner during one of the dealer repairs and the USB plugs stopped working...its things like this that make Ford just a flashy piece of junk. I immediately went and purchased my Third Tundra...stick to Toyota and you won't have the 'Latest and Greatest' but it will work for the next 10 years and still be worth half the price you paid!
Own Toyota and Lexus and love them both. In the market from a truck and I can’t get past how dated the Tundra is compared to the F-150. Love the new engine, interior and tech. The tundra is nowhere close to offering the same all around features/options, so leaning towards the F-150 and only keeping it until the warranty is up.
A point was awarded for each $1k difference in price at the start. I think you should have done the same thing for towing capacity, after all a truck is supposed to tow and pull stuff first and foremost. So add 2 more to fords score. Just my opinion.
Gas would cost about the same in the ford, no? The tundra takes regular fuel, while turbo engines typically require premium, which is substantially different in price (when filling up 36 gallons). The Ford has a few things more that I like, such as the sunroof, but Toyota is simple and won’t break. I’ve had a 2003 Tacoma since it had 10 miles, and it has been my daily driver for almost 20 years. I’ll be upgrading for a tundra platinum soon :)
So much ignorance on the internet. Toyotas reliability is so overrated and over-hyped it ridiculous. Toyota rides a reputation. Are Toyotas generally good and reliable vehicles? Sure, but so are Fords, GM's, and most other major automakers. In fact some of the worst modern day vehicles reliability issues I've seen were from Toyotas. I've known 2 different people with the Lexus version of a Camry have their motors go out in them. Both were less than 10 years old and one was probably about 5 years old and both were sub 120K miles cars one was barely over 100K on the odometer. Then I had a boss who bought a brand new 08 Tundra 2WD truck and took it back to the dealer 3 times in the first year because it kept having wheel bearings go bad. Also I call BS on Fords reliability getting better in the last 6-7 years. If anything it's gotten worse. Not mechanically but these newer vehicles are so advanced that their is way more that can go wrong. If you take a 15-20 year old F150 or Silverado/Sierra, and you keep up with their maintenance, and don't overly abuse them then 300K miles should be easy. My modded 03 Lightning with 180K that I beat on more than most people beat on their cars runs as good today as it did at 60K. Only real issue other than basic maintenance like brakes and oil changes is the front seal on my rearend developed a slow leak but it didn't cripple the truck it just left a little gear oil on my garage floor. Easily fix in my garage in just a couple hours. I've known several 5.3L guys with over 250K that were modded and beat on hard that ran great with no real problems. The overall build quality might not be as nice as the newer truck but the reliability of the older 1/2 tons is excellent for the most part if they've been kept up with.
JROC734 I agree with your 2nd part of your comment but I kind of have to disagree with your first part. I know of many Toyotas out there that have more than 250k+ Miles on them. Most of which are 4runners. I’ve heard of a Corolla (might’ve been) that hit over 600k Miles, a 4Runner hitting 500k, but everyone doesn’t have the same luck but what I’ve heard a lot of Toyota owners have had good luck, but to each their own. If you take good care of it it’ll take good care of you.
JROC734 what are you talking about? Toyota reliability overhyped, have you owned one. My family and extended family mainly drive Toyota vehicles and all of them are far more reliable than the domestic stuff. I have a vetranerian with nearly 400k miles on a first gen tundra and it runs and drives like a new rig and has only recently needed an alternator. How's that for reliable. My 07 camry is the same way 245k and not a single problem, haven't even replaced the battery yet.
Jess Roberts exactly what I said. Overrated and overhyped. Are Toyota's generally reliable? Yes, but so are most modern vehicles and particularly full-sized trucks built during the Gen1 Tundras era are very reliable vehicles if you keep up with them. Yes a Gen1 Tundra is usually a very reliable truck and IMO one of the best vehicles Toyota has ever build. Definitely more reliable than the Gen2 Tundra and I get this from some of my old Toyota truck fanboy friends. Again I've know 2 different people with the Lexus equivalent to the Camry that had the motor shit the bed on them without much over 100K on their odometers. Is that surprising? Yes, as Camry's tend to be well built and reliable cars. I've dated umpteen girls who drove Camry's along with know other people with them and they seemed like good running cars, but what can I say it happen and having a motor with less than 130K let go is shitty. Hell I had a 95 Integra GSR lose a cylinder at 124K. Weren't Hondas supposed to be the most reliable cars is the 90's? That car was stock other than a CAI and a header. I've know several people with Foxbodies with over 200K on the factory 302, and one with over 300K on the original drive. Yes the chassis's were worn and loose being that they are build on a platform who's wheelbase has been know to shrink from years of braking but they ran fine. I knew a woman who had bought a brand new GEN3 Camaro and drove it for several years and the motor went out at 43K. I was a kid and I know it was a V8 car. Not sure is it has a 305 or a 350 but I think it was a Z/28. Anyway a car just a few years old had the motor let go at around 43K. That's crappy reliability but then come to find out she never once had the oil changed in the car and the motor lasted 43K on the original oil before the motor let go. Toyota people are like Kubota people. They think their shit is the bomb, and that everyone elses shit stinks. Kubota people act like any sub-100 hp tractor isn't on a Kubotas level. BS, I've personnally had better luck with my American cars than my Japanese cars even though my 93 Civic was a great cars that never gave me any trouble. There's not just one brand that shines all the time. They generally compete pretty well against one another. You can give me a list of issues that other manufacturers have had and I can give you a list of issues that Toyotas have had. Basically by buying Japanese cars and tractors among other things you're helping build their economy while not really helping ours. I don't give a fuck is you buy up some of OUR land in the southeast to get cheap labor and built some plant to help employ a few thousand Americans so you can claim that it's American made while the American owned companies aren't made here. They come here and build niche vehicles that sell in no other market but NA, and return most of their profits to Japan but we're not allowed to buy land in Japan and build or sell other products over there in their market because that would take away from their profits. Well fuck them. And if you look up how much our government taxes our local businesses on the dollor it's no surprise many are built in foreign countries that don't tax then nearly as hard, but the American companies still bring their profits back here for the most part.
THETOPGLOCK 5.0 cheaper, more reliable, and damn near identical in a drag race. Save the $3500 added for the ecoboost, get the 5.0, tune it and put all the bells and whistles that bolt on.
John Roberts I agree the 3.5 is a beast in pure power. But that is not my concern here. I want long term longevity with as little maintenance as possible. When I buy new I drive the wheels off it and I don’t think the eco 3.5 is up to it. I love the appearance of the F150 and I want the 5.7 in the Tundra.
I like the F150 more but I do wish Toyota offers more updated features and powertrain. Yeah I know it's tried and true but it doesn't hurt for Toyota to sometimes take a leap forward and create something new that will leave people in awe. Like the first time Toyota introduced the second generation Tundra back in 2007. Now that was something to behold.
I have an 2010 and 2014 tundra and they never let me down. They are the most reliable truck I own, my brothers on the other hand have ford and Chevrolet and I always have to repair their trucks. So if anyone looking for a good reliable truck, get a tundra. You won’t regret.
I just bought my new truck 3 days ago. I was stuck between the GMC Denali , tundra, and F150 - went with a race red 2018 F150 lariat with just about every option and love it. The F150’s technology is what ended up being the deciding factor, the front camera, 360 view, and back up camera makes navigating tight parking lots a lot easier. I love that my F150 can park itself , but I don’t see me actually utilizing that option, but I can’t wait to get my boat’s trailer programmed into the truck so I can try out the backup trailer controls 👍🏼. As far as pricing goes I picked up my F150 for $61k out the door (had a MSRP of $63k and the Toyotas I had liked would have been in the same neighborhood. I mean Hyundai/Kia, Ford, Chevy, Etc., are strong suits but when it comes to reliability I think those 3 will take the lead. You failed to mention that the Tundra is the only pick-up truck with 4 piston calipers on the largest front discs anywhere. You also missed the fact that the Tundra Dbl Cab with 6.5' box has a much larger back seat than the Ford given my need for a 19.5' truck to fit in my 19.6' garage. Even trying to forget the 10K difference we couldn't ignore the tiny legroom in the back seat when using the 6.5' box that we also need. I liked the luxury, quiet and great ride of the Ford and was willing to give it a try but just couldn't make it fit our needs and our garage.

I know several people that have had huge huge problems with ford trucks. I do not have time to type it all out and i am NOT on a side. But i have to say after seeing a friend and others go through nightmares with ford. My old employer purchased a ford truck for almost 50K Canadian. just after the warranty was up it broke down. Brought into he dealership, they had his bill at almost 10k and the truck was still not running. They gave him a deal on a new truck, he did not want to buy another ford but had no option at that point. Not to mention the break downs under warranty.
You can always get cheaper versions like an XLT with less gadgets and a 5.0 Coyote V8. You can keep the 10 speed. The Toyota is so outdated I'd rather get a used one and save about half the money. I'd be getting the same truck compared to the new one, LOL
The 2018 5.0 (Coyote) F150 is a monster. Over 340 rwhp stock, 400 rwhp with 93 octane tune and CAI. ac c yes I agree. I have a buddy with a 2012 rock warrior, it's hands down better truck than my 2015 silverado. The only thing my silverado is slightly quieter and maybe better fuel milage. Towing and payload are the same. But my chevy has been in the shop 3 times now for repairs and his Toyota never has with 130k miles.

How does the Tundra get a point when comparing powertrains? The F-150 has more torque, which is more important than horsepower when comparing trucks that are used for towing/hauling. In performance comparisons, the F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L outperforms the Tundra V8 engine. The difference in HP is insignificant.
The host is wrong on the figures anyway. The 2017 and 2018 3.5 Ecoboost has 470 ft/lbs and it is port and direct fuel injection. The 3.5 Ecoboost is the superior powerplant.

Bought a 2019 Tundra 5.7 TRD Sport double cab. I had 2 GM 1500 trucks that failed me prior. I am very happy to be in my Toyota now.
Im a certified tech and been for over 30 years. I work in an independent shop and work on all brands of vehichles. We have several customers with tundras and dozens of customers with f150s...
The toyotas most common problems are the bushings that mount the rack and pinion. They get old and brittle and cause a bump steer issue and some movement in the steering wheel when you hit bumps. Alternators and radiators are the next most common problem I see with the tundras I maintain.
F 150s most common problems are everything.... I have never had a tundra blow spark plugs out of the head, bust spark plugs off in the head, have fuel drivers fall right the fuck off the truck, have 3rd brake light water leaks from 04-2015 , have vacuum hubs that fail all the time, wires so brittle they are all broken at the door hinges to no windows open, GEM's that constently fail causing security no start problems, front end geomotry that destroy tires no matter where you set the camber ane toe, $300 battery cables that corrode inside out and fail all the time, transmission lines that need to be replaced 99% of the time you swap a radiator, oil filters you can't even get a wrench or hand on, exhaust manifold bolts that constantly break off in the heads....Every single eco boost pile of shit I work on has coolant pouring out the turbos , thats why ford puts that nice fabric skid plate ( diaper) on all there new products, it keeps the owner from realizing they bought a leaking piece of shit....
Toyota is not near as reliable as they were in the 80s-90s but they are a hell of a lot better than ford garbage. Ford does ONE thing well....They have mastered the art of selling an inferior product to brand loyal idiots who don't know what a quality product is...Do you know why the f150 is the best selling truck? Because they fail and you have to buy a new one....( and they offer huge fleet bonuses to get rid of their junk, dodge and GM don't have to ).. They fail to the point that it is not economicaly wise to repair the pile o shit much sooner than any other truck in America....

Iihs crash safety test have proven ford has what it takes to keep people safe.. so I think this is a bias opinion also the Ford you seen may have been pushed through thier limits cause more people buy ford then Toyota of course your going to see alot of ford's being serviced cause the fact It's the drivers fault of not taking care of it.. God forbid the manufacturer has something to do with it but maybe the fact you see ford in your shop more is because it does sell well cuase people trust it more then the tundra cause the tundra can't pull half as good as a ford does its why people are scared to pull either a Toyota.. I grantee if you pull about 10,000 to 12,000 with a Toyota the Toyota will not survive.. the Ford does pull that much now in the 2018 truck and can do it with no hassle, I like the tundra but I highly doubt it would survive the towing and payload challenge.

You're going to get hate for stating the truth. Toyota is and WANT to be known for being reliable. That's why they are the biggest manufacturer who are still not putting turbos in their car (in NA at least), wait a long time to introduce android carplay / apple, that's also why they hold on to older tech for a longer time - and it does pay off. I'd rather have a 10 years old toyota than a ford/gm/dodge anyday.

2009 F150 FX 4. Driven with total miles of 98,000 mi. Transmission replaced at 75k and a host of other problems. A 2007 Tundra from Lafayette, LA that rolled over 1 million mi in 2016 only 1 issue that manifested at 750k mi. Toyota retrieved the truck from the owner in exchange for a brand new Tundra. Don't believe me? Google it yourself. I'm in the process of trading my F150 for a 2018 Tundra. Say what you must but the proof is in the puding.

Went with a 2016 Silverado over a 2016 Tundra 3.5 years ago, and it was a mistake. I was dazzled by the fancier truck, which is the case here with the F-150 vs the Tundra. Had transmission problems right off the bat, and I hated it so much that I traded it for another Silverado (2018) with an upgraded engine and transmission (6.2L/8Speed), which was a HUGE improvement. However, 8400 miles later the transmission started leaking all over my garage floor, ended up spending 2 weeks in the shop to get fixed. That's when I was over the fancy bullshit features these trucks have over the Tundra, and started paying attention to what really mattered most, well built and extremely RELIABLE drive trains. That's what the Tundra has over all of these other truck brands. So that's what mattered most to me this time around. Made a smart decision this time and Traded the 2018 Silverado in for a 2020 Tundra. Didn't even bother looking at Ram and F-150. The price differences between them are not justified, and this is just based on the simple fact that their drive trains are inherently INFERIOR to that of the Toyota Tundra. You can't polish a turd with glam and glitter and expect to get away with it long term. Tundra for the win!

They are coming out with even a boxer engine in 2019 . 150s are optional for diesel now , and ford makes a 6.2, way better than the 5.7... by the way the new boxer engine will get 37 Mpg.. if you get a 150 diesel it will have 45 mpg. The engine may last, but the shit supporting the engine doesn't. I had BOTH turbos go out by 65k miles. I dont tow, and i sure as hell dont abuse my truck but nevertheless, 2 turbos. one was covered under warranty, the other cost me 5k

@yea bouy I had the 5.0 coyote engine in a f150 as well. Strong engine for sure, but not as level as the 5.7. The 5.0' power band kicks in around 35 mph, the 5.7 is consistent throughout. The 5.0 coyote is probably fords best gas engine in 20 years.

Cant take that from Ford, great design. Again, the coyote 5.0 is the best engine but it absolutely has a power band you feel, where the 5.7 you cant. Its flat.

It's a truck made for working and if I'm pulling a boat on a muddy hill down to a public access I'm deffenitly choosing a v8 over a ford mustang engine in a truck that's like a skinny guy carrying a fat chick pistons going to go out for sure oil burning turbo compartments turbo oil leaks it's going to be a higher maintenance in the long term for the legendary f150 while the 5.7 tundra is straight forward with a basic v8 for me I don't have time for turbo maintenance and the expensive price to maintain a dual turbo...

Private Number I’ve owned probably eight or nine new Fords down through the years and I have never needed a warranty repair. And back when we were poor we drove our Fords to 300,000 miles before we traded them and never had an engine or transmission give out. Only dealt with a couple of minor issues.
Ironically enough I'm trading my 2011 F-150 for a Tundra tomorrow. I only have 80k miles on it and I'm the type of person that likes to drive em' till they drop. This Ford has been a heaping pile o' sheet. It burns oil, water collects in the passenger door every time it rains, transmission slips and now the blower on my AC is making a tapping noise, so I've had it. I'll take reliability over anything else that Ford says they offer.

You also have the option to drop down a couple trim levels on the F-150 to the Lariat package, which has all the essentials to include leather seats. F-150 Lariat is closer to this Tundra's price point.
It's not 12k more when comparing apples to apples. Drop down a model and choose the options that match up the best with the Tundra and you're very close in price with a vehicle that has a much more recent update. Just opting for the naturally aspirated V8 which is more comparable to the Tundra V8 will take a major chunk off the F150 price tag. I have no idea why the reviewer chose the trim levels and engine the way he did. It's almost like he was trying to give the Tundra a head start.
I would say they forgot some benefits of the tundra though. Things like the 10.5 rear end and 9.5 front diff with 4.30s in them. And yes they are both vented disc but the tundra has 13.9" brakes and the front is fixed 4 piston calipers. Also it uses a key but the tundra has bump start, you just bump the key to start it and it turns over on its own

In the end it all comes down to who do you trust more Toyota or Ford? If you had good experience with the Ford why would you buy a Toyota? I get that. Yes, Fords have a lot more features, and bells and whistles that you cannot get on Tundra. Ford wins hands down in that category. If you value your money you will choose a Toyota. That is what I did despite acknowledging that Ford had better acceleration, better features, better looks I still bought a Toyota. I just don't trust Ford. Look at the history of recalls and you will understand what I am talking about here. If you like spending your time at the dealership while they do the next recall on your truck then by all means get a Ford.

And something else no one really mentions is the tundra is very overbuilt. Sure it’s dated as fuck and is basically 10 years old going on 11 but it’s built like a 3/4 ton more than the 1/2 ton class it’s in. Parts are built to last and it can tow above the “rating” also.
PWDT4R It's a beast. Tows my 10k boat better than my 07 Cummins did and pulled a 21k 5th wheel no problem. Ford has made great strides, but it seems like a lot of unnecessary bells and whistles.
There's nothing that comes close to making it three quarter ton. It has a dismal 1600 lb payload and a motor comparable to most half tons. Engine is reliable and will run a long, long time with good maintenance but rest of truck will have disintegrated with rust by 80-100k.

Car confections, you screwed up the engine part, the 3.5 ecoboost in the 2018 F-150 has 470 Lb ft of torque, not 420, so it has A LOT more torque than the Tundra, plus the torque is more usable, peak torque for the 3.5 comes at 3500 rpm, which is at a lower rpm than on the tundra's V8, the ford should have gotten the point for the engine, the ecoboost is all around, a better engine.
Ford Ecoboost engine = vapor lock, limp mode.
Look it up, Ford has a class action lawsuit on this issue right now since so many owners are having this major issue. Crap engine.

My f150 has had a plethora of problems and I'm only at 82k miles. Some problems were stretched timing chain, ac compressor, oil pan gasket, water pump, 1 bad turbo, head gaskets leaking and more. I will be trading it in for a tundra or 4runner as soon as i get it back from the shop.

I disagree totally. I owned a 07 Limited and now own a 16 Ford. Yes you could feel the weight difference but sync 3 keeps disconnecting from my phone mid song. With my towing package with the v8 it is terrible compared to how the Tundra pulled. My Ford feels literally gutless. One thing she didn't mention, but if you aren't a truck person you wouldn't notice is the truck bed. The Ford yes is sprayed but it is in sections. There are 1/8" cracks between these sections like around the wheel well and dust will fill it up. I had to use caulking to fill it. Also the lift gate doesn't seal either. Its frickin awful. Now talking about the Ecoboost. My dealer said not to buy those motors because of reliability issues. You look at any "lemon" books on reliability and Tundra is top end. Resale value I can attest to as well. I purchased my 07 Tundra for 31995 Canadian in 2011 and in 2016 got 22900 for it. Resale value is also where you make money. I am 99% sure I'll be going back to Toyota even though my Ford dealer is great. I'm just hoping the new design comes out before that and they put the 5.0 V8 from the Lexus RCF in it revamped for truck use and a new tranny with more speeds.

F150 is more comfy and luxurious than Tundra is. Cool! The environment where you have to spend your time waiting for the tow-truck is important.

Reliability is a no brainer. The Tundra wins that hands down. The cost to replace the Fords turbos is about $4000 PER turbo. Which they will fail if you do any, yes any towing. Those tiny little turbos are not meant to spool under load for an extended amount of time. The reason you don't hear jokes about Toyotas breaking down, is because toyotas dont. break. down.
Great comparison, both are great trucks. I’ve owned 3 Tundras since 2007. My current truck is a 2015 TRD Pro. I get 11.9 mpg with my Nitto Trail Grappler tire upgrade. The nav system is outdated and I have to push the “tow/haul” button to get a responsive feel through the throttle.
With that being said, Ford has gotten way too proud of their trucks in pricing. The reason Ford is the best selling truck in North America is due to fleet sales. Look at any big city parks and recreation or street department vehicles. All Ford trucks... Ford has chosen to pass those government and municipal discounts on by raising prices for the public.

Toyota dependability is subjective. I have a 1999 Landcruiser with the 4.7L V8 with 155K. Dependable yes - perfect no. It is on its third starter - which for some dumb ass reason is between the engine and the firewall which means $ 600.00 labor to get the damn thing out. So that is $900.00 there x 2. And a throttle body for a cool $1K installed. I never expected those types of repairs on a Toyota. And this was built in Japan - not Texas.
Fair enough review. You always get more features with Fords and the new one looks really nice. Toyota's tend to be more utilitarian but reliable as an anvil and underrates their towing and carrying capacity. I have had trucks with a much higher capacity on paper but out on the highway the Tundra felt more in control and the six-speed with the thumb shifter makes the downhills steady and predictable.

My grandpa bought a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT with the 3.3L engine in blue jeans color for $42,000 doesn’t have the big screen or the fancy stuff but it has everything else and has tinted windows, tonnel cover, and step guards were added as dealer accessories. The truck has auto start, stop feature.
As you said right at the beginning, the Tundra is an 11 year old truck and the F-150 is 3 years old with a substantial refresh for this year . That's more than enough for me. There's a reason Ford outsells all others and trucks like Tundra barely figure in the truck battle. One other thing to consider is the Tundra model reviewed is the top offering while the F-150 model is 2nd from the top.

Thank you for Posting! What all these UA-cam channels should compare is a F-150 vs. Tundra with 50,000 miles. By this time, you will be on your second or third check engine light with a Ford and the Tundra doesn't even get new spark plugs until 120,000 miles! Tundra does all the things a 1/2 ton truck should - comfy, reliable, and it doesn't have so many features that break. Its quieter during the ride, suspension is superior, and engine is literally tried and true.
Before you judge, I purchased a 2018 F-450 Platinum Brand New ($80K) off the shelf at Brandon Ford. After 1-week and 250 miles, first check engine light...after trip to the dealer, another check engine light, then again. Three before 1,200 miles. Ford ended up buying the Truck Back due to Florida Lemon Law. They gave me a F-150 as a loaner during one of the dealer repairs and the USB plugs stopped working...its things like this that make Ford just a flashy piece of junk.
I immediately went and purchased my Third Tundra...stick to Toyota and you won't have the 'Latest and Greatest' but it will work for the next 10 years and still be worth half the price you paid!

Own Toyota and Lexus and love them both. In the market from a truck and I can’t get past how dated the Tundra is compared to the F-150. Love the new engine, interior and tech. The tundra is nowhere close to offering the same all around features/options, so leaning towards the F-150 and only keeping it until the warranty is up.
A point was awarded for each $1k difference in price at the start. I think you should have done the same thing for towing capacity, after all a truck is supposed to tow and pull stuff first and foremost. So add 2 more to fords score. Just my opinion.
Gas would cost about the same in the ford, no? The tundra takes regular fuel, while turbo engines typically require premium, which is substantially different in price (when filling up 36 gallons). The Ford has a few things more that I like, such as the sunroof, but Toyota is simple and won’t break. I’ve had a 2003 Tacoma since it had 10 miles, and it has been my daily driver for almost 20 years. I’ll be upgrading for a tundra platinum soon :)

Ford Motor Co. has come a long way in the past 6-7 years in the reliability department. A lot of new tech, more efficient.
So much ignorance on the internet. Toyotas reliability is so overrated and over-hyped it ridiculous. Toyota rides a reputation. Are Toyotas generally good and reliable vehicles? Sure, but so are Fords, GM's, and most other major automakers. In fact some of the worst modern day vehicles reliability issues I've seen were from Toyotas. I've known 2 different people with the Lexus version of a Camry have their motors go out in them. Both were less than 10 years old and one was probably about 5 years old and both were sub 120K miles cars one was barely over 100K on the odometer. Then I had a boss who bought a brand new 08 Tundra 2WD truck and took it back to the dealer 3 times in the first year because it kept having wheel bearings go bad.
Also I call BS on Fords reliability getting better in the last 6-7 years. If anything it's gotten worse. Not mechanically but these newer vehicles are so advanced that their is way more that can go wrong. If you take a 15-20 year old F150 or Silverado/Sierra, and you keep up with their maintenance, and don't overly abuse them then 300K miles should be easy. My modded 03 Lightning with 180K that I beat on more than most people beat on their cars runs as good today as it did at 60K. Only real issue other than basic maintenance like brakes and oil changes is the front seal on my rearend developed a slow leak but it didn't cripple the truck it just left a little gear oil on my garage floor. Easily fix in my garage in just a couple hours. I've known several 5.3L guys with over 250K that were modded and beat on hard that ran great with no real problems. The overall build quality might not be as nice as the newer truck but the reliability of the older 1/2 tons is excellent for the most part if they've been kept up with.
JROC734 I agree with your 2nd part of your comment but I kind of have to disagree with your first part. I know of many Toyotas out there that have more than 250k+ Miles on them. Most of which are 4runners. I’ve heard of a Corolla (might’ve been) that hit over 600k Miles, a 4Runner hitting 500k, but everyone doesn’t have the same luck but what I’ve heard a lot of Toyota owners have had good luck, but to each their own. If you take good care of it it’ll take good care of you.

My family and extended family mainly drive Toyota vehicles and all of them are far more reliable than the domestic stuff. I have a vetranerian with nearly 400k miles on a first gen tundra and it runs and drives like a new rig and has only recently needed an alternator. How's that for reliable. My 07 camry is the same way 245k and not a single problem, haven't even replaced the battery yet.

Yes, but so are most modern vehicles and particularly full-sized trucks built during the Gen1 Tundras era are very reliable vehicles if you keep up with them. Yes a Gen1 Tundra is usually a very reliable truck and IMO one of the best vehicles Toyota has ever build. Definitely more reliable than the Gen2 Tundra and I get this from some of my old Toyota truck fanboy friends. Again I've know 2 different people with the Lexus equivalent to the Camry that had the motor shit the bed on them without much over 100K on their odometers. Is that surprising? Yes, as Camry's tend to be well built and reliable cars. I've dated umpteen girls who drove Camry's along with know other people with them and they seemed like good running cars, but what can I say it happen and having a motor with less than 130K let go is shitty. Hell I had a 95 Integra GSR lose a cylinder at 124K. Weren't Hondas supposed to be the most reliable cars is the 90's? That car was stock other than a CAI and a header.
I've know several people with Foxbodies with over 200K on the factory 302, and one with over 300K on the original drive. Yes the chassis's were worn and loose being that they are build on a platform who's wheelbase has been know to shrink from years of braking but they ran fine. I knew a woman who had bought a brand new GEN3 Camaro and drove it for several years and the motor went out at 43K. I was a kid and I know it was a V8 car. Not sure is it has a 305 or a 350 but I think it was a Z/28. Anyway a car just a few years old had the motor let go at around 43K. That's crappy reliability but then come to find out she never once had the oil changed in the car and the motor lasted 43K on the original oil before the motor let go.

BS, I've personnally had better luck with my American cars than my Japanese cars even though my 93 Civic was a great cars that never gave me any trouble. There's not just one brand that shines all the time. They generally compete pretty well against one another. You can give me a list of issues that other manufacturers have had and I can give you a list of issues that Toyotas have had.
Basically by buying Japanese cars and tractors among other things you're helping build their economy while not really helping ours. I don't give a fuck is you buy up some of OUR land in the southeast to get cheap labor and built some plant to help employ a few thousand Americans so you can claim that it's American made while the American owned companies aren't made here. They come here and build niche vehicles that sell in no other market but NA, and return most of their profits to Japan but we're not allowed to buy land in Japan and build or sell other products over there in their market because that would take away from their profits. Well fuck them. And if you look up how much our government taxes our local businesses on the dollor it's no surprise many are built in foreign countries that don't tax then nearly as hard, but the American companies still bring their profits back here for the most part.

I just bought my new truck 3 days ago. I was stuck between the GMC Denali , tundra, and F150 - went with a race red 2018 F150 lariat with just about every option and love it. The F150’s technology is what ended up being the deciding factor, the front camera, 360 view, and back up camera makes navigating tight parking lots a lot easier. I love that my F150 can park itself , but I don’t see me actually utilizing that option, but I can’t wait to get my boat’s trailer programmed into the truck so I can try out the backup trailer controls 👍🏼. As far as pricing goes I picked up my F150 for $61k out the door (had a MSRP of $63k and the Toyotas I had liked would have been in the same neighborhood. Happy New Years and hope everyone has an awesome 2018 🎉

You failed to mention that the Tundra is the only pick-up truck with 4 piston calipers on the largest front discs anywhere. You also missed the fact that the Tundra Dbl Cab with 6.5' box has a much larger back seat than the Ford given my need for a 19.5' truck to fit in my 19.6' garage. Even trying to forget the 10K difference we couldn't ignore the tiny legroom in the back seat when using the 6.5' box that we also need. I liked the luxury, quiet and great ride of the Ford and was willing to give it a try but just couldn't make it fit our needs and our garage.

I know several people that have had huge huge problems with ford trucks. I do not have time to type it all out and i am NOT on a side. But i have to say after seeing a friend and others go through nightmares with ford. My old employer purchased a ford truck for almost 50K Canadian. just after the warranty was up it broke down. Brought into he dealership, they had his bill at almost 10k and the truck was still not running. They gave him a deal on a new truck, he did not want to buy another ford but had no option at that point. Not to mention the break downs under warranty.

The 2018 5.0 (Coyote) F150 is a monster. Over 340 rwhp stock, 400 rwhp with 93 octane tune and CAI.
It makes the Toyota 5.7 feel weak, gets much better mileage, and will last as long as any Toyota V8 ever thought about like all Ford Modular engines besides the 4.6/5.4 3-valve variation.

ac c Ford has been known to make great trucks through out all the years. So has Toyota. Ford and Toyota makes the best trucks all around. And this is coming from a Mopar man.
ac c yes I agree. I have a buddy with a 2012 rock warrior, it's hands down better truck than my 2015 silverado. The only thing my silverado is slightly quieter and maybe better fuel milage. Towing and payload are the same. But my chevy has been in the shop 3 times now for repairs and his Toyota never has with 130k miles.
Frame will rot in the yota in 5 years lol

if you compare acceleration the F150 destroys the Tundra

A person named Sam There’s other factors other than horsepower my friend. Not saying the F-150 isn’t quicker, but saying just don’t base acceleration off of pure hp.

pedal commander will solve that tundra problem really quick i got the commander in my 2016 tacoma and yup now its a beast.

its an electronic device that taps into your gas pedal and it bypasses the lag when you stomp on the gas. like all the older vehicles have a cable going from your gas pedal to your throttle body so its precise when you push on the gas the pedal commander does the same thing just in an electronic form.

How does the Tundra get a point when comparing powertrains? The F-150 has more torque, which is more important than horsepower when comparing trucks that are used for towing/hauling. In performance comparisons, the F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L outperforms the Tundra V8 engine. The difference in HP is insignificant.
The host is wrong on the figures anyway. The 2017 and 2018 3.5 Ecoboost has 470 ft/lbs and it is port and direct fuel injection. The 3.5 Ecoboost is the superior powerplant.
