It was war he went through where you are celebrated for killing, yet he was manipulated into being a hit man and killing has become second nature to him. Much like Gene they lied to themselves thinking what they were doing what’s right when in reality it was to service their own goals. Gene was a therapist before being an acting teacher and we see that he still tries to land roles like sally. He is a fraud who uses his skills as a therapist to manipulate his students to give it their all and pay him for it. His skills even can get to FBI agents which is something Fuches can get away with because he’s charismatic. Killing people is wrong yes, but people like Fuches are more terrifying because it’s them who just use Barry to do their dirty work and can cause so much destruction with Words.
Why does this scene hit so hard? Because it totally destroys out perception of Barry. It's built up as a badass moment where Barry showed his true potential. But when they show the facts - Barry just walked in & shot an innocent man, because he completely lost control of himself. Barry isn't a lovable, well meaning psychopath. He's an unstable, violent man. We're not watching a man find redemption. We're watching a man accept he's long past it.
“I pray that human beings can change their nature, because if we can’t, then you and I are in deep trouble.” Within one line, the entirety of this 3 (soon to be 4) season show is explained. That is the writing that makes Barry unique. That is what makes this show so gripping. It’s ability to condense an entire show into one line is incredible and something that even the best writers couldn’t do.

That is a very real story and it’s a story many veterans might relate to. After rewatching this scene again, i didn’t even notice the woman screaming at the death of her husband. After noticing i can’t stop thinking about her and completely empathizing with her. Imagine a group of military Foreigners, invade and take your land and are constantly patrolling the streets. HBO has put #Barry 's face on LA billboards and mega-city buses - but that and poor Bill doing months and months of sickening press for the show - HBO gets an F- for promoting the thing. Bill selling Pringles in a 30 second Super Bowl commercial got more airtime. I have Barry tee shirts from the HBO shop and I made my own HBO Barry bumper stickers and window decals. He doesn't want to get typecast into one typle of role, so he selects his projects accordingly. Trainwreck, Skeleton Twins & IT 2 are three of his films I watch over and over.
I guess if this were to be concluded,it would mean Barry blacks out due to Rage and then rage just takes over him. He goes on auto pilot and let's his anger take control.
I love the realism in this scene. The war in the Middle East consists of fighting exactly like this, civilians in towns, village, wherever, killing US troops, and then-as if turning off a light switch-going back into their homes and go about their daily lives. This type of guerrilla tactic of warfare has been around since the Vietnam days. It was just the same during that war. While Barry, in this case, was in the wrong, it still-many times-plays out like this. Depending on which side of the political spectrum you’re on, it’s note worthy to say that both sides are guilty of atrocities. I can’t begin to imagine what it’s like watching someone you went through boot camp, all this training, formed a bond with, to see them suffer like that. It takes balls to put yourself in a position like that.
yeah, except the US troops are in a town, village or whatever they shouldn't be. If you invade a country and the inhabitants fight back, you can't really consider them "guilty".
Wrong. Completely wrong. Nothing you said was even close to correct. Stop spreading misinformation and lies based on nothing but your own perception of what you THINk happens. You don't know and will never know because you're just another pussy too scared to serve but brave enough to talk shit on the internet.
Both sides guilty? How so, please? No 'towel heads' were on any of the 911 flights. What ever happened to United We Stand? - What's it gonna take to get back to that place? Screw going after trump - bush 41 & 43, DICK cheney and rummy never set foot in prison. Nobody could hold them to account because they would be nuked. The only way to achieve a minuscule of justice would be to pull an Amelia Earhart or John John operation, so nobody could be fingered. Sadly, no such luck, it'll never happen. Ask Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich or Bernie. I am not anti-military, I'm just saying we had NO BUSINESS going to any war anywhere unless it happened within our 200 mile offshore borders, period. Nobody cusses out the Swiss, and they are neutral; they learned their lesson early. The last person to cross our border and murder people was Pancho Villa and his men. 17 civilians dead in Columbus, NM. General Pershing was sent to capture them & was immediately abandoned by the President.
Or from finding out your Mother-in-law is actively trying to take your children and you have no money for an attorney. This happened to me 50 yrs ago - I am not a healthy person.
I can see how series one was classified that way, even though it was on a thin line... but series two was definitely a drama. It should’ve switched categories.
3:46 Gene’s comment about praying human beings could change their nature hits hard after the final episode of the show. spoilers Gene almost changed his nature, but he did not. Him getting revenge on Barry cut off Barry’s attempt to change his own nature and take responsibility. And the whole situation regarding the movie and him caving in to wanting to be a part of it, after briefly protesting it, was just a tell-tale sign that Gene did not bring himself to this necessary change that would have honored Janice’s legacy.

ik its the writing of the show but its great to see that other soldiers dont want innocents to get killed, ive heard stories and rumors that during the start of the middle east wars such as desert storm and desert shield soldiers shot any male near the shooting, and ik its not justified but its mostly because higher ups put the ROE (Rules Of Engagement) as any MAM (Military Aged Male) as hostile. i can find the video where i heard about this from if anyone wants to back check what im saying but what barry did reminded me of that video,
What hits me harder in this scene is that Gene says all of that, conforts Barry, without knowing that Barry killed Janice. Knowing this fact, everything Gene says is irrelevant, he thinks Barry has redemption but he doesn't know the truth. This makes me feel as if everything Gene says he truly feels it, but is not the written truth. As if the show is telling us something that only we as aspecters know, and we know the truth, Barry has done much, much more, and he does not have redemption.

Plot twist: Barry ends up making a film about his life, but everyone thinks it’s fictional. He wins an Oscar.
2 Emmys
Henry did really great in this show!
Bill Hader did a phenomenal performance.
I never heard of this show before but now I’m going to binge watch it! It looks really good! I just Finnishes the clip of him in activist class too
This clip shows really how veterans deal with PTSD. Like this shit is really, really scary.
The only reference they had during Korea and Vietnam was 'shell shock'. I suffer from several things, not the least being severe PTSD. SUX
I like how they writers made us hyped for some action flick moment with a bunch of gore but the reality was 1000x times more real and brutal
Great show, deserves more recognition
Two of the greatest actors ever performing together

This look. This fucking look scares the shit out of me. Bill Hader is a fucking diamond.
Henry Winkler and Bill Harder both absolutely nail these characters. Brilliant stuff.
looking back, barry still got what was coming for him, he took way too many inoccent lives
Honestly the ending was almost too happy for him. He gets to be remembered as a hero and like he was completely innocent while Gene pays the price for his actions. Sally is still in love with him and his son gets to look up to him still even after death. It’s the happiest ending he could have gotten
@@nickfilms8828Sally isn’t in love with him anymore tho?
@@TastierSleet I guess some could interpret it that way when she said "Nope" to the guy. I took it to mean Sally said nope because she learned her lesson and doesn't want a love life anymore because she doesn't want to get dragged down by anyone else's issues ever again. But some people could interpret it as a "You'll never measure up to Barry in my heart" explanation.
I can't see this scene the same way after how the show ended
People can change. Yes, they can.
This is such a beautiful scene. finally Barry can tell someone exactly what happened and why he accepted a worldview that he didn’t deserve a good life.
I'm sorry. But I had to hear that last part 10 times. That's REAL right there
good sceneeee :)) (i say that about every scene)
Winklers performance here is so amazing. The best "Holy shit" in the history of Television
0:11 Happy Days surfacing.
All of the sudden, a gunshot is heard, followed by a lot of screaming and yelling. You go outside to see an American on the ground, and another looking at you with killer in their eyes. You immediately regret your action and close the door. But it’s already too late. As the American breaks down your door with murderous intent in his eyes, you could only hear as your wife screams in agony as your body goes limp.
"Did u Sump him Up, a Little Chin Music, some Hi Heat?"
Bill Hader might be the most underrated actor out there
Are you serious? Wow.
@@HighSpeedNoDrag Yes, crimson was serious. He wasn't knocking #BillHader - or his acting.
Sick af this even has to be done to get the word out. Bill even said the main reason anybody watched the first episode was because it came on after GOT. Pathetic.
@@Research0digo Outstanding reply and Hader made the crossover from comedy to acting. Still his very animated expressions are reminiscent of his days and nights with the mighty S.N.L.
Gene: I promise you, I will not look at your differently
Gene: S3 E8
I just started this show recently and got to this episode last night. So fucking good. I was in the Army and had a buddy who had this kind of rage in him. Uncontrollable anger. This shit was too relatable.
probably my favourite scene in the show apart from the interrigation assassin part haha so out of field for Hader but he really is an amazing actor
I really need to stop watching clips of this show. I haven't even watched the show, yet.
Recently I came up across bill hader in train wreck and thought what the fuck is this and why I'd he in that film
Then I ran into this show and I have so much respect for him as a writer and an actor my god this show Is funny when it wants to but hits u so damn hard and questions the morals of the main character so perfectly this show by far is incredible and am I happy its finally getting some recognition
And the fact directed by the same director on Atlanta ( also an incredible show ) just made the show even better up there with my favourite shows I've ever seen
He doesn't want to get typecast into one typle of role, so he selects his projects accordingly. Trainwreck, Skeleton Twins & IT 2 are three of his films I watch over and over.
I love this scene
love this show
I guess if this were to be concluded,it would mean Barry blacks out due to Rage and then rage just takes over him. He goes on auto pilot and let's his anger take control.
"I'm most afraid of losing my mind. You lose your sense of identity, your sense of who you are, where you are."
-Stephen King
Update: he and Barry were in deep trouble
at the end that was really good advice
@@SPFLDAngler you wanna say the right thing instead of throwing insults?
@@SPFLDAnglerMAXIMUS DOUCHE.
General Pershing was sent to capture them & was immediately abandoned by the President.
i like how they actually shoot at the roof
Crazy that the line at 3:46 points the most to fuches of all characters. Hader nailed the ending
2:52 after I opened up to my therapists
The worst thing is stuff like that happens in war and always has.
Or from finding out your Mother-in-law is actively trying to take your children and you have no money for an attorney. This happened to me 50 yrs ago - I am not a healthy person.
Henry Winkler is such a treasure
I love how Gene acts like he can emphasise with Barry when really he’s incapable of offering any real support.
lol. Never tell this story again.
This isn't really a comedy and shouldn't be classified as that in the emmys
It's a tragicomedy. It's got elements of dark drama and humor.
sis this show is the epitome of black/dark comedy
More like a thrillet
It’s definitely a comedy but it’s got drama in it. Tragicomedy
I can see how series one was classified that way, even though it was on a thin line... but series two was definitely a drama. It should’ve switched categories.
he just needs cuddles :(
3:46 Gene’s comment about praying human beings could change their nature hits hard after the final episode of the show.
spoilers
Gene almost changed his nature, but he did not.
MFr what a great scene. Bill and Alec are creating a classic!
What a bad ass show wow
people can change their ways. it's a far more difficult path. But it's the only one with a future.
This is some good acting.
Pretty great acting by Hader. He just doesn’t look right in the Kevlar and gear. Probably costume design. It takes me out of the scene, but the acting is great though. Winkler is great too. Not too hokey like other roles. Great to see these two with heavier material.
Probably more realistic then. Alot of skinny faced people in the military. Haha
@@brandonhughes645 THIS lol
No one looks right in full battle rattle... unless you are a beefy bodybuilder looking dude, you are going to look like a fucking dorky ass loser in body armor. That's just the way it is. So yeah it's realistic that he looks like a dork here.
@@SPFLDAngler i never realised this until i saw that vice video of adam driver putting on a bomb suit in kuwait. dude is a big guy, was in the marines, and in that moment he just looked like a massive dork

man i liked their relationship. show was the best 10/10 sad it ended
Bruh i fw Henry Winkler, hes a Great actor no matter what hes in and he always adds a little bit of reality to whatever scene hes in
I don’t miss that place, the Korengal…
ik its the writing of the show but its great to see that other soldiers dont want innocents to get killed, ive heard stories and rumors that during the start of the middle east wars such as desert storm and desert shield soldiers shot any male near the shooting, and ik its not justified but its mostly because higher ups put the ROE (Rules Of Engagement) as any MAM (Military Aged Male) as hostile. i can find the video where i heard about this from if anyone wants to back check what im saying but what barry did reminded me of that video,
this shit probably happens on a daily basis and it just gets swept under the rug as casualties of war
Fuck, this hits home.

@@Research0digo aye👌🏻🇺🇲
What hits me harder in this scene is that Gene says all of that, conforts Barry, without knowing that Barry killed Janice. Knowing this fact, everything Gene says is irrelevant, he thinks Barry has redemption but he doesn't know the truth. This makes me feel as if everything Gene says he truly feels it, but is not the written truth. As if the show is telling us something that only we as aspecters know, and we know the truth, Barry has done much, much more, and he does not have redemption.
“We’re both alphas”

Uh, No and within the content of this production and real life. Both have never been and will Never Be Alphas.

Thing is.. shit like what Barry did happens all the fucking time in war. And we're supposed to "feel sorry" for lunatics like that.
Factual, just murdered a school-bus full of kids on my way to formation this morning. Pushed an old lady off a bridge on my way back to my barracks just for shits and giggles.
Barry has killed MULTIPLE innocent people up to this point to save his own skin. You are watching him try to dig himself out of a hole he's put himself into.
i wasn’t paying attention at this part and thought barry was telling fuches he killed someone and i was confused on why he was reacting sm bc i thought he already knew about barry
