Social Media has ruined Formula 1

  • Formula 1 has evolved into a phenomenon that exceeded expectations. F1 has always expanded into new countries and continents, but it took Netflix Drive To Survive to propel it to that next level. But with the growth of social media and the ability to stay anonymous being so easy, it has changed the Formula 1 fan base for worse. Formula 1 fans are a unique bunch, but the negatives involved with it's recent growth, has been too much to ignore. Enjoy.

I 100% agree. Most of the F1 fans on social-media have no clue about racecraft or driving standards. For example, if it was Max Verstappen who crashed-out Perez in the recent Monaco GP instead of Kevin Magnussen I guarantee most of those F1 fans would say that Perez Squeezed him purpose LoL. @@avflashback8913 I think the exact opposite is happening with the Monaco first lap crash right now. Sure, Magnussen shouldn't have went for that overtake there, but Perez clearly had the space on the other side to avoid the crash if he wanted. He either didn't check his mirrors at all or just didn't expect Magnussen to go for it. They were both at fault Perez for lack of awareness, and Magnussen for the optimistic overtake attempt. The stewards did the right choice, because clearly both were at fault, yet Magnussen gets all the blame on social media because Perez is more popular.

As a new fan from 2022 who found the sport without having even heard of DTS I made the mistake of actually learning everything I possibly could about the sport and its history under the assumption it was generally expected. Boy was I wrong.
I now find my self “gatekeeping” the sport from my own dad who grew up watching the sport starting back in the 70s. Unfortunately he only got back into it recently through DTS after not watching since Schumacher retired. I got no problem he can’t even pronounce 70% of the grids name correctly but I do with the fact he’s fully behind the drama and only the drama, it’s honestly embarrassing for an old head. I mean he is fully into all the supposed heated rivalries between two drivers, most of which never even existed apart from doctored radio messages in early DTS seasons. Hell can’t even talk about races from the 90s or early 2000s I’ve gone back and watched because he barely remembers who even won that particular season.
I’m convinced DTS is just bring brain rot into the sport so call me a gatekeeper if you want but I feel like a sport such as F1 requires a little due diligence to be a fan.

I immediately remembered how Leclerc unfortunately took out Checo in Mexico last year (racing incident), then a Red Bull fan and a Ferrari fan started fighting in the stands and after the race the whole stadium booed Charles for something he had little influence on...I was genuinely shocked that day...but this is where hate and mob behavior took F1

A little correction: it was a Checo fan who fought a Ferrari fan because he was so pissed about what happened to Checo (still doesn't justify his actions) and he saw the Ferrari fan clap for Charles and then the Checo fan started the fight. I've met a lot of Red Bull fans (not Checo fans, this was before Checo in Red Bull) and they are cool people, but ever since Checo went to Red Bull, Checo fans who wear his Red Bull merch started bullying other driver's fans (Max, Charles, Carlos, Daniel, whoever's performing better than Checo). Every time I had to walk past, they sang songs mocking me. When Max's car blew up, they and the entire stand around me erupted in cheers and really toxic vibes. I get it. He dominated last year, and people are happy to see another winner. But when it comes to the point of bullying someone for wearing a Red Bull shirt, who's on their own, it's ridiculous. I paid $600 to sit there all day feeling like shit. The online negativity is spilling over into the real world. I went to the first Melbourne grand prix in 1996 when I was 14, and boy have things changed. Booing drivers on the podium, things like that. It's awful. My dad took me to the 1985 Dutch GP, which would be the last one until 2021. As a youngster, I was witness to Lauda's last win and a legendary Lauda-Prost-Senna podium. But what I remember more about those days was that fans were more into teams, brands, engines. It was actually Senna, who became the first real pop-celebrity because he was an F1-driver: that's when F1 gradually started to shift from all being F1-nerds to either supporting or opposing a Senna, a Schumacher, a Vettel, a Hamilton, or a Verstappen. And modern (social) media are only emphasizing that nowadays.
A bit like soccer, back in the days one liked a driver not for its passport or personality, but because he was part of your favorite team. A bit like a great singing for your favorite football club, nowadays. Myself I was in awe of the aggressive red & black Ferrari and the golden black Lotus. Once Lotus turned yellow I was quickly done with that, but Ferrari always stuck with me and for me it's pretty simple: I support a team and the drivers who're in that team. If next year both drivers would change I'd go with them because THEN THEY are part of the Ferrari-outfit. It's 'Team over Drivers' for me. I'm equally happy with a Carlos Sainz-win as I am with a triumphant Charles Leclerc and guess what...: next year this Dutchy will be cheering for a certain Lewis Hamilton, because: Ferrari.
It's a bit of chicken and egg discussion where some argue drivers become great because certain teams take them on, while others argue that certain teams are made big thanks to the talent of individual drivers. I think the single worst influence of social media is that it has emphasized the drivers much more than the teams and the brands. I am definitely in the 'team over driver' camp, but modern (social) media most definitely is emphasizing 'driver over teams' and I think that's a shame.

I very much agree with the fact that social media and the idea of dramatizing the sport certainly made it popular (I was introduced to F1 in 2019 and watched my first race in 2021) but at the same time, F1 is loosing its soul because of those ideas. Social media has opened the window for some "fans" to attack drivers for even the most little thing and get away with it because social media exists, which I think is just unnecessary. As for the dramatization factor, I certainly believe a fair bit of fans that first heard of F1 through Drive to Survive and thought, Oh this show is really cool, without even knowing that some things in that show are blown out of proportion that when they first watch a race or a race that is usually pretty boring, they're shocked because they're like, hey this isn't what I saw in Drive to Survive. All it takes to be a real fan in my opinion is just bit of understanding of that F1 is not an entertainment based sport and the drivers are also human, like us. Sure, I may be a massive Ferrari and McLaren fan all the way, but I also have a huge amount of respect for Max Verstappen, because he has redefined the word dominance and has a pretty funny personality I can get on board with

On a positive note: I like how transparent the drivers are and that they show their training and what it takes to be an F1 driver on social media.
In my childhood (90s) the public opinion was "They are just driving a car, everyone can do that" while nowadays it is more accepted that they are highly trained and physically fit athletes which I think has a lot to do with social media showing these kind of things much more than TV ever did.
Examples are like Alonso cracking a nut with his neck or Rosberg who showed his training equipment

Social media in F1 has its positives and negatives like it does in any sport. So it’s not unique to F1.
Having said that, maybe because there’s only 20 F1 drivers on the grid. It does seem like some drivers get more attention/positive feedback/praise than needed (relative to what they achieved).
Or alternatively they get undeserved hate/criticism for no reason/something really small.
Example: Driver A may win a race or get a podium and some people act like it’s the greatest drive in history. When it wasn’t that incredible, just benefiting from the situation around them.
Or Driver B, may make a mistake/underdeliver and almost automatically they’re suddenly the worst driver on the grid and should lose their seat.

Thanks for the video! I will never forgive what this toxic F1 mob did to Grosjean. He was the total laughing stock of F1 fans on social media. If one of those from the mob was the recipient of that huge pile of toxicity, they would have ended up in a mental hospital. Yet, those same mentally weak people had no problem abusing Grosjean left and right. When he had his horrible accident in Bahrain, I watched these same pretentious abusers do a 180 and idolize Grosjean making him almost a godlike figure. They noticed that publicly showing empathy garnered likes, so they changed their tone. Those people don't actually give a hoots about Grosjean: It's all just for narcissistic elation. Totally selfish. Anyway, do you think that anybody apologised for being a pathetic abuser for years? No, of course not! It was a wonderful opportunity to hide dirty laundry underneath the carpet. I am an F1 fan since the late 90's. There was a time when fans used to discuss sidepods, front wings, gearbox casings, rear wings, suspensions, exhausts, driving styles and so on. Today, fans make jokes about Craig Scarborough's shirt when he wants to show them some updates of a car. My guess is that is the reason these videos aren't posted on UA-cam anymore. But might be wrong on that. And why do they all talk about Max, Charles, Fernando and Lando? They all like to behave as if they are close buddies who can use their first names. It's cringe. Nobody would ever just say Lionel when talking about Messi.
I also remember Verstappen asking the FIA if they could ban alcohol consumption because the behaviour of those so-called fans was getting out of hand. We all know Verstappen is not a prude but if he himself gets annoyed, then it really means something...
I could write an entire text about studies showing the negative impact social media has on emotional development and the ability to regulate oneself. It would take too long, but it is obvious that people's heads are turning into blancmange. It's not good and doesn't do justice to the technological marvel we are witnessing today. Never in my life would I have thought that a power unit with more than 50% thermal efficiency would be possible and that they could withstand several races. That would have been unimaginable years ago. We need a lesson in gratitude. It's absolutely needed!

Ocon doesn't try to hide the fact he wants to be the best, doesnt help that his three most recent teammates have some of the biggest stan cultures (I would know, because I honestly like all three of his former team mates but their fanbases are insufferable) surrounding him, so every single mistake, or even incidents that he doesnt get involved with ends with the stans at his throat with pitchforks, Ricciardo and Norris got a lot of hate at mclaren because it had seemed that the dream pairing of the supposed funny guys wasn't actually as funny. This is still affecting Ricciardo to this day, people hate on him for everything he does now. Hamilton went from being a down to earth guy with his own thoughts to becoming an unlikable pr merchant celebrity. He feels like a robot that says everything the media tells him to, and now he has one of the worst stan culture fanbases on the planet.
Everyone who is team mates with Alonso (especially if they god forbid end up challenging him and i say this as an amAlonso fan myself) gains a massive bashing from his stans on the internet who will blatantly throw out alleged misinformation towards both the team and drivers.

F1 is like football now. You have hooligans supporting their drivers relentlessly to the point were a portion of the fanbase erupts in fights. It’s what happens when a sport gets wildly popular. F1 is probably one of the top 3 biggest sports here in the UK, behind football and maybe boxing. It’s never been like that until recently.
As a byproduct of the times, social media has made it easy to insult without having to stand directly in front of the person/people you’re insulting. This is especially effective for socially awkward, physically inept, mentally unstable losers that often make up 90% of F1’s Twitter drama. If everybody can hold the mic and say what they want at the same time, you’re inevitably going to come across these people. It’s not necessarily a good/bad thing, it’s just what social media does.

It's almost as if people forgot how to simply enjoy things, how to simply have fun. Everything has an agenda, everything is drama nowadays. This goes for F1, for gaming, music, movies, whatever. All the fanbases feel like they're on the knife-edge at all times. Hobbies and interests i feel are supposed to be that place where you go to relax and enjoy with people who share the same interests - not a place to start fights over every little thing

Thank you for making such videos. Ur content feels so relaxing to watch. what u shared in this video has troubled me for a long time as some of the ppl i know do act very weird for their favourite driver. Like for example the Monaco Gp was shit a race. yes the result was very wholesome and even I am very happy about it but ppl are acting as if it was the best race in 10 years.
Monaco in general doesnt produce epic races but this time even the strategy part went away.
    All in all
I always look forward to watch your videos
The comment section is also so mature and civilised

Social media potentiated something that is affecting everything in the world right now and you pointed out: fanatism. This obsession and impunity to be free to be aggressive and violent over something/someone behind a screen and spend so much time of your life for nothing. it's sad because is killing everything, not just this sport.

  • @jerrykreutzer4326

You do realize that you can just, like, not read social media, right? It doesn't affect the races at all. Who cares. Stop reading Twitter if it upsets you, I sure don't.
I used to watch F1 in the 2000s as a kid, and I rediscovered it some 5 years ago. It is MUCH better now. In 2000s we had one race on TV with minimal information, if you wanted more the best you could do is read a magazine. Now we get analyses, radio compilations, onboards, mid field overtakes etc. on UA-cam. It makes even the boring races interesting. And even the main broadcast is much better with more (technical) detail.

Honestly I feel the same way. What really freaks me out now is how vicious people are about the partners of drivers. When I was younger it wasn’t even a thing to know who a driver was dating. I really wish some people would just take a few steps back from their socials and touch some grass!

Bang on. However I feel like if a past f1 fan introduces f1 to a friend and not them just watching DTS, new fans can be just as good. I can't really consider myself an old fan when I started watching in 2016 when I was 9 but we watched Bahrain 2024 with a friend and despite it being a pretty boring race he still enjoyed it. Fast forward to 7 races later and now he knows about drivers like clay regazzoni, vitaly petrov, pedro diniz. Kinda crazy. It's possible but the new fanbase is super toxic

Good video my friend. Fanbases holding onto grudges from incidents ages ago is not healthy. End of the day these drivers are risking their lives for our entertainment and to win. They deserve more respect than they're given. Fanbases for certain drivers being toxic isn't something I like. I inagine the drivers themselves dislike it too.

The biggest problem is that all the drama the Netflix fans are talking about doesn't even exist.
Also sometimes I think the media also ruins the sport, like the new commentators that are always yelling and have no analasys, which makes it seem more like show.

As someone who started watching F1 in early 2022, I 100% agree. I see a lot more people caring about the culture and drama rather than the actual racing, and the fans (specifically the fan accounts on places like Twitter) are some of the worst people you can come across. I don't like gatekeeping for this type of stuff because as the video states, you shouldn't have to learn every single thing to be a fan; coming for the drama though doesn't make you a fan though, and you should look for something else if you plan to only care about personalities. It's racing, not reality TV.
It's why I've migrated to WEC and IMSA - while the races are not nearly as common, it's fun to see racing, and strictly racing.

Seeing everyone complain about how Monaco was boring and had no overtakes is the most frustrating thing. People who make this complaint are either DTS fans or new fans that just want to see something to stimulate their need for constant action or else their attention spans just give out. Its Monaco, its the exception of the rule and most f1 fans know that but the people on twitter are loud even though they are a small minority.

Well, though not to be taken absolutely literally you said it all "everyone"... this includes both hardcore fans and casuals. I don't demand action all the time but goodness me, after lap 1 the race was an absolute nothingness. No overtakes (4 I think) and barely any attempts to. And since pitstops were made unnecessary by the red flag there wasn't even a chance for any strategic gamble.

Im sorry but, even if its monaco and its obvious u cant overtake, the real reason people hate monaco is because the red flag killed any hopes of strategy. Everyone just stayed on the same tyres and paraded to the end. Thats why people say its boring.

Which really makes me question the claims that there are 500 million viewers of each race.

Drive to Survive is the WORST THING that has happened to F1.
Previously, F1 grew organically and even people that picked a driver to support fanatically, still understood the beauty of the sport.
Since Liberty took over in 2017, EVERYTHING went way worse. First the iconic logo is gone, then the cars became way too long and the audience became a "mob". I watched this sport since 2005 and since last year I've distanced myself from F1.
Schumi's domination still had way more people claiming pole and wins. 2005-2012 was amazing (every single year of them). Even Vettel's 9 wins and 4 years of Mercedes brought us interesting stories.
But 2021 was the turning point. With Covid and Netflix, even from the first race, mob started to poison F1. That's why in races such as Imola,Silverstone, Monza,São Paulo and Jeddah, appropriate punishment couldn't be given to offenders because of "not want to influence championship". In reality, they wanted to set things up for a "final showdown". They got it, but with the worst decision ever in F1, to only letting "4 cars" between championship contenders.
They got the money and audience, but they killed the spirit of the sport. And since 2023 season (no contention) there is no reason to continue watching anymore. Even F1 Manager is more interesting than this procession sport.
