    One thing I noticed......those Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates can REALLY take a beating before they go down. Surprised me.

    Mk 48 torpedoes are carried only onboard submarines. Mk 46, Mk 50, and Mk 54 torpedoes are surface and air launched. - STG1 (SW) retired

      @falvegas511 Рік тому

      Yup, 48 is Sub launched....usually smaller ones on surface ships. UA-cam doesn't Vet very much ... and often their Topic Description doesn't agree with The Content! Sloppy.

      it takes so long to fire a torpedo. why hasn't someone invented an autoloader for torpedos?

    • @billotto602
      @billotto602 Рік тому

      I wasn't aware that any surface ships carried them anymore. I thought the Nav had gone to all missiles.

    • @patrickmccrann991
      @patrickmccrann991 Рік тому +1

      @Bill Otto They are anti-submarine torpedoes not for surface targets.

      @billotto602 Рік тому

      @@patrickmccrann991 I suppose. You probably wouldn't want a surface target to get that close, right ? I was on a carrier. 80+ planes & all her escorts whose only job was to make sure I didn't have to swim home ! 😊🙄🤣

    for clarity sake - the canadian ship does not have mk48 torpedoes - those are the ones used on american submarines. The canadian ships use mk46's

      You must have been a torpedoman. I noticed that also.
      The orange torpedoes do not have any explosives. The green ones do have explosives.

      I was stationed on an SSN and bunked on the racks next to Mk-48s. The Canadian torpedoes featured here are definitely not Mk-48s. I know my old bunk mates when I see them.

      Carriers and large deck amphibs don't use torpedoes, however the helicopters they fly definitely can use them. The last fixed wing aircraft the US Navy used that carried torpedoes was the s-3 Viking. Currently the only aircraft that the US Navy has that carry torpedoes is the Boeing P-8A Poseidon.
