  • The second in my series in appreciation of bands and artists of yesteryear that don't get much love and attention today! The Underlooked Bands!
Episode two is one of the classiest bands from the UK of the 1970's and 1980's, Sad Café.

Please note that as of April 7th 2024 I have had to trim out a one minute of a performance of Strange Little Girl due to copyright blocking in some territories. Apologies for the jump in the video at that point. This was one of the very earliest videos I made, so if I ever get sufficient time I may make a new version with slicker editing etc given what I have learned since then. Sad Cafe deserve the best I can give them!

Thanks for doing my favourite band from the late '70s. I think Fanx TaRa was one of the best debut albums of all time

It was my pleasure. I love them too. Once saw them 5 times on one tour! I made this video way back in my UA-cam beginnings. One day I'd like to revisit it and make a more in depth documentary, time permitting.

That was an excellent retrospective of a very good band that were in the right place at the wrong time. Some great songs there

Thanks for giving this very under-appreciated band some love. I first heard them on LA radio station KROQ in the late 70's. They played the "Run Home Girl" single and I've been a fan ever since. Great musicianship, a stellar front man in Paul Young,, beautiful vocal harmonies and excellent songs. Another underrated UK band from the same time period was Charlie.

Saw them at Wigan Casino in 1977. Paul Young gave me a glass of what he was drinking and I kept the glass for many years. I absolutely loved the band from day one, the diversity of their music was incredible. I brought back the Fanx Ta-Ra /Misplaced Ideals from a holiday in Vancouver no one had seen it. I spent sometime in hospital in 1978 and I got a copy of Misplaced Ideals on tape. I enjoyed your video well done ! I recently dug out my vinyl copies and ripped them to mp3, they sound as fresh as ever.

Ah..when the venerable Casino used to have Rock bands on Saturday night-I saw Deke Leonard and others there in the early/mid 70's.Saw Sad Cafe at Erics Liverpool before they hit the charts-what a live band.

My admiration for Sad Cafe started with Fanx Ta-ra which I originally owned on cassette tape (I still have it, but, of course, I no longer have a cassette tape player). I felt then and still do that the album was a masterpiece (I now have the digital version), and over the decades I have often wondered why the band never reached the commercial heights of other similarly brilliant acts.
Nowadays, they seem to be mostly playing in small venues and pubs, while the most we get to see and hear of them are the occasional low-quality clips posted by fans here on UA-cam.
A great performance at Glastonbury might do wonders for their broader appeal but any new material seems to be an unlikely prospect. Nonetheless, they remain one of the best bands ever to come out of the UK and in particular Fanx Ta-ra is a "must-have" item in any music lover's collection.

They were indeed brilliant and should have been way bigger. I saw them multiple times including 5 times on one tour!

I grew up listening to Ole - Paul Young had a really special voice, and you had the full range of expressions on that album. Some great musicianship besides Paul too.

Couldn't agree with you more about Sad Cafe being "underlooked." My favourite album is still their debut. The second side is like a prog rock masterclass with fantastic vocals. Dare I say it's their Abbey Rd side two? Always been a fan of Ashley's guitar playing and his use of the Wah Wah. The solo on Feel Like Dying is absolutely gorgeous, then you've got Immortal, Sail On and many many more. For me, the band wasn't the same when he left. Did see them several times in concert, and I still have the programmes, badges and ticket stubs. Have been thinking of doing Everyday Hurts at the karaoke night I sometimes attend, but Paul is a hard act to follow.

The eponymous album is fantastic. Digital Daydream Blues, What Am I Going to Do, Losin' You, Dreamin' and the mercenary send off Keepin' it From the Troops are next level. La Di Da was released as the US single - I thought it was the weakest song on the album and it went nowhere on the charts, although there was a little radio airplay

Loved your piece on one of my favourite bands! Not too sure you’ll get to read this, but if my memory serves me right Keeping it from The Troops was rumoured to be inspired by James Anderton former Chief of GMP! 😉

I laughed a bit at the intro, because huey lewis, 10cc, sad cafe were all part of my childhood growing up.
Their live album was played so often i think its probably worn out by now.
On with the show and bell ends are such cracking songs, and a brilliant way to open nd close a gig.

America mainly Southern California had many bands that fit into your description-Sneaker, Pages, Nielsen/Pearson,Larsen/Feiten,Greg Guidry,Eric Tagg,Roby Duke,AirPlay,Robbie Dupree, they call it Yacht Rock now there are many more. Some bigger bands Ambrosia Kenny Loggins, Doobie Brothers w/Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross those are a few.Sad Cafe was one of the few English bands that would fit in this genre.Paul Young is one of the best frontmen of all time to me he was amazing and that original lineup was very tight and Paul’s command on stage was very impressive.Very energetic band that looked like they were having a lot of fun great musicians “Run Home Girl “is a classic all time song.

Sad Cafe's harmonies were always a strength. As tight as the Australian Little River Band.
The singles on the eponymous album were the 2 weakest tracks. Just my opinion. Losin' You, Dreamin', Digital Daydream Blues, and Keepin' it From the Troops were the strongest IMO. I'm in Love Again has more spark that Love Today.
Olé is great. After that, there wasn't enough $$ to keep the band together

    • @ThatSeventiesRockFan
      @ThatSeventiesRockFan  2 місяці тому

Absolutely, great vocals great harmonies. I do love LRB too, especially the first album. Some of the best harmonies ever on that album.
