The person who arranged this is Rob Mathes, he's also on the backup acoustic guitar on stage. He wrote all the music for the choir too. I was part of the choir for this performance and let me tell you, it was one of the greatest moments of my life. The person who produced this was Legendary Hollywood producer George Stevens Jr.
I love that you're in the choir. Who's the guitar player that did the solo. He looks like Sheldonfrom bigbangtheory😊. . I asked Rob but never got a reply. Rob can play anything. OMG.
No joke, this has to be up there as one of the greatest performances EVER. Think about it, they're playing one of the greatest rock songs of all time, by one of the greatest bands ever, while among the crowd are the members of said band, the President of the US, and goodness knows who else (there were a lot of celebs in those crowd shots) and they absolutely KILLED it. The Wilson sisters are LEGENDS in their own right, no doubt about it.
I am shocked that you didn't recognize that drummer. That is Jason Bonham, the son of the late great Bonzo. I've watched this performance easily 100 times, and that dust storm comes up every single time. Personally, I give this performance an 11 out of 10. Just the fact that they performed one of the most iconic songs by one of the most iconic bands, in front of said iconic band, and to do it so flawlessly, I can't knock any part of it.
Hearts known to have small LZ sets during their shows. The best LZ cover band. It was at the request of them to have Heart sing it that night. The queen singing to the kings! Brilliant!
There is also another version of the video that is edited a bit differently and announces Jason as the son of John Bonham performing on the drums. This wasn't his first time performing together with Heart, so there is some history there. Also, Robert, Jason's godfather, and band had invited Jason to attend with them, but he had to decline due to another prior engagement. He just didn't inform them that prior engagement was to be there performing this song with Heart using his Dad's drum kit in their honor. Surprise! So many reasons this performance will bring a tear to your eye everytime. I love this reaction. As a lover of great music, rock history and heritage and such a legendary band and song, I would have been disappointed had you not had such a heartfelt reaction. I like knowing that there are others out there it is just as meaningful too. ❤👍🤘✌️
It was a surprise to the Led Zepplin members. Robert is Jason's godfather and was invited to be his guest. Jason told him he had another commitment that night. The video doesn't show when Jason was introduced where Robert points at him.....they do to each other
Every time Ann does the line "To be a rock, and not to roll" I tear up too! I have watched this 100+ times & I still tear up! Her voice is so powerful, I can't hold the emotion in
I was in the choir for this show, and yeah, the person who wrote our music made sure to give her the spotlight for that, so we just sang "To be a rock *pause* yeahhhhhh"
Another fun fact, the full choir, we were actually singing the whole performance, as soon as those 10 choir members appeared on stage, the full choir was singing along with them, but we kept it nice and muted so that it would hide the number of voices, until the end of the guitar solo, which I'm sure you noticed that some of the guitar notes from the original song are being done by The Choir
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned the fact that Ann Wilson was 62 years old at the time of this tribute. What a set of pipes! I've seen Heart in concert several times throughout the years and they never disappoint.
The tears were mainly, I think, because Robert had asked Jason to join them that night but Jason declined saying he had a prior engagement. The shock when they saw him on the drums just added to the emotion. By the way, Jason's bowler wasn't just a tribute to his Dad, the hat was Bonzos actual hat. The kit Jason was playing was one of his Dad's too.
@Ste Srad I was there that night - many a tear was shed. We rockers really are a bunch of softies. I was at The Scorpions gig at The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in '99 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the fall of the wall. The scenes in the crowd during "Wind of Change" were amazing - big hairy-arsed rockers, clad in studded leather and denim, openly crying and hugging - me included!
Once that full choir comes in, an already majestic performance becomes absolutely heavenly .. and over all that Ann Wilson's voices still cuts through .. one of the best LIVE performances .. ever.
At least partly the tears were from being surprised to see Jason Bonham (also Plant's godson) taking his father's place in this performance. And that alone must have brought back so many memories with Plant who had always been especially close to John.
@avanoosterhout8397 yes ge was invited to go to the honors with the band and sit in balcony. But. He told Plant he couldn't as he had other commitments. So, the surprise...it's at the very beginning but isn't shown here
The electric guitar was by Shane Fontayne who has toured with just about everybody including backing Stephen Stills on a CSN tour right around this same time. He has led the Kennedy Center Orchestra during several of these honors. I'm sure you've realized that the drummer was Jason Bonham, son of John. Saw an interview a few years later with Ann and Nancy in which they said they were in the midst of a tour in Florida. The Center sent a plane to fly them from Miami to Washington the day before the actual show so they could rehearse with all of the elements the KC had added. They rehearsed for one hour, then flew back to Miami for that night's show and then back to Washington for the final show, then back to Miami for their next show. Ann said she was so exhausted that the performance was on pure adrenaline.
What a set of pipes on Ann 😱 and at 62yo.. you can really hear the maturity and depth in her voice in that it is, in a word, "Seasoned" 🤷.. absolutely sensational.. the perfect choice to tribute, arguably the greatest rock song of all time by the greatest rockers of all time.. the reaction on the old boys faces say it all!! 🤘🤘
Fun fact: Just after they raise the curtain on the big choir they cut away to the audience. The chick rocking out in the audience with the streak of white in her hair is Bonnie Raitt.
I don't how any cover can ever equal this one, the setting, the audience, the orchestra. I mean its prob the most iconic song in rock history so anyone who loves Rock is going drop some tears on this. Damn David I am glad you finally got to hear this. Well done on breaking everything down.
I have watched this video so many times but I am still amazed at Ann's vocals. I have always been a fan of the Wilson sisters and while it is obvious what an amazing vocalist Ann is, a lot of people don't realise what a brilliant guitarist Nancy is. Powerful performance. I'd just like to point out that Ann was 65 at the time of this performance.
Yep easily one of the best cover versions ever 👌Jason on drums doing his dad proud with bowler hat and the choir. That's what got plant crying the most I think. U weren't the only one cutting onions David trust me 🤘
Those two women have a LOT of cajones LOL! What a fantastic job they did!! And Jason Bonham on drums no less. Loved the shout out to John Bonham with the bowler hats!! I don’t think this could have been any better. Heart killed it!
Lots of fitting comparisons to his dad - when playing along side Phil Collins (great in genesis) he was said to be more dynamic and truer to the song.l than Phil whom was just playing it safe.
Great reaction - I've lost count of how many times I've seen this performance but I still tear up every time, especially at the end when Jason Bonham looks up to his dad as Ann sings that final "Stairway to Heaven"
Let's not forget that one member of that band on stage was a legitimate, if brief, member of Led Zeppelin. When I saw them live at the famous O2 gig in London in 2007 it was Jason on drums that night in place of his much missed father. There were many tears that night too.
My “allergies “ always kick in right before the choir comes in when he’s making that guitar cry. Soooo good. Every single bit of it. I loved every minute of it.
A few things: First, I cried a little, too. Second. Jason Bonham is a wicked good drummer. Third, I would literally crap my pants playing Jimmy Page's iconic guitar solo in front of him, but it was absolute perfection. Fourth, Ann Wilson's voice rising above what looks to be a 100 person choir. Fifth, Nancy Wilson, as we all know is not only a crazy good guitarist, but also a hell of a vocalist. Sixth, this is one of the greatest covers in rock history. Seventh, when none other that Bonnie Raitt is totally rocking out to what you are doing says, well you done good!
To my knowledge, Plant went up to The Wilson's and told them he dislikes covers of the song, but he loved theirs. Also they have his support in any cover they do.
Yeah Ann and Nancy confirmed this, that Robert said he hates listening to covers and has grown to hate the song itself over the years but absolutely LOVED their cover of STH. They are the only band blessed to do their covers and besides the brilliance I think it's also because Ann's voice matches Robert's voice perfectly.
Their voices are quite different compared to the vinyl recording. Ann is precise and clear toned. Plant is gruffer, more casual, delivering lines that drop rather than punctuating. They are each good in their own ways but I will always prefer the more poetic delivery of Plant.
Got a subscribe from me for both picking up on all the layers as they came in on your first listen (there's a lot of them) and for being honest with your emotions. Hard to not get emotional on this one -- Plant, Page and Jones having to sit there and be honored, seeing Jason Bonham absolutely kill it playing for his dad and in front of his godfather (Robert Plant) and the men who raised and mentored him. Lot of emotion just on the context. And then Ann Wilson starts signing and kills it all the way through, the arrangement, the musicianship. I have to imagine for Led Zeppelin this is like seeing your daughter come out for the ball dressed like Cinderella. So many versions of this song and all are less than the original, but this version stands beside it IMO, And all of it done live without effects, Unbelievable performance. Thanks for your review!
@@THEDavidHeretic Thanks David. I understand now where you're coming from. My scoring would just be based on how much I enjoyed a piece. Being moved to tears makes this one a 10 for me. 😊
@@stevebibby4189 That's the beautiful thing about music Steve, and art in general....it's all subjective to personal taste. One of the wonderful things we get to have as human beings is different tastes. Could you imagine how boring life would be if we all loved or hated everything the exact same, and with the exact same amount? Noooooo thanks, I'll keep my independence and my personal tastes, thank you very much. LOL.
@@THEDavidHeretic Have you reacted to Motion Device? If not, you could watch them evolve from very young about 7 years ago. I think you will like them.
Yay, glad you are doing this...gave me chills first time I saw it... let's see how you do... It is just as good everytime I see it. The original Seattle rockers, the Wilson sisters, killed it. Jason Bonham playing his dad's drum set & bowler (his appearance here was a surprise to his late dad's bandmates, catching everyone, esp. Plant, in the gut) & that last reveal of the bowler wearing choir is like unveiling the missing member - that & Jason looking to the heavens near the end, bring on the tears everytime. It is s musical & emotional master class. Great reaction. I can't even think of who could have covered this properly after seeing Ann, Nancy & Jason taking the helm. Those ladies can rock, I think there's even a signature Nancy kick in there somewhere. Emotion inducing performances are what make a lot of love live music. Go back & watch a bunch of times & let 'the levee break'. 😁 😎✌
Robert Plant and Jimmy Page's reactions are priceless, not to mention Bonnie Raitt and the Obamas rocking out to the greatest rock anthem in history. I tear up every time I see this. The Wilson sisters couldn't have done it any better!
Robert and Jimmy, on this night, finally got to hear their masterpiece as we have heard it for these many decades. If you can manage to get Robert OR Jimmy to smile as you cover their music...you have really accomplished something!
Yes, Robert Plant is tearing up...He's watching his best friend's son, playing his best friend's drums, wearing his best friend's bowler hat, and absolutely killing it as a tribute to his father, Robert, Jimmy, and John Paul - and all as a surprise to them.
It's been mentioned the Jason was on drums but what some do not know is that Robert plant being Jason's godfather had invited him to sit with them in place of his dad for the honors, Jason informed Robert that he would love to but had a gig he was already commited to that night, so when he walked on stage the members of Led Zeppelin were floored and flooded with emotion.
This deserved a perfect 10 -- I don't see how it could have been better. This is IMHO the greatest cover of ANY classic rock song ever. Yes, I have teared up every time that I have seen this video (at least 2 dozen times). I wish this had been released as a single -- I have little doubt that it would have been a #1 song. Fun fact: the original was never released as a single back in the 70s, so it never qualified for the Hot 100 -- it too would have been a #1 song.
That’s what amazing songs performed brilliantly do: they move us emotionally. They touch something deep inside. It’s okay to get emotional. You’d have to be made of stone or completely disconnected to NOT get emotional.
You had one of the best and genuine responses to this that I've seen yet and I have probably seen them all. It IS an emotional performance on many levels🙌🏿
Yeah but none of those Heart members were there only Ann and Nancy, who weren't a part of Heart when they did the covers so your excitement for that part is kinda unwarranted...
What is amazing about this performance to me is that Zeppelin did this song with just a few guys and made it iconic. This was a true tribute to an great band and song. I doubt it will never be done like this again. Zeppelin will always do it best.
I enjoyed watching your reaction. Most reactors dont pay attention to the background. Heart has always been amazing with their live shows. You will never forget them. The night after this Led Zeppelin went on David Letterman and said this was their favorite cover ever. They dont usually like when people cover it. You could have gone all the way back to the beginning for all I care. This is the song that you can never hear too much.
I've watched dozens of reactions to this, and you are the first to really take the time to appreciate each augmentation in the arrangement, what was being added along the way throughout each build, including acknowledgment of the arranger who did a masterful job.
Im listening to music over 60 years this is one of the greatest performances ever. Ann Wilson is one of the greatest singers in music history. Phenomenal!! Best success on yr channel
I thoroughly enjoyed ur reaction to this one, that appreciation in ur eyes was priceless! That’s John Bonham’s son on the drums, such a beautiful attribute….PLEASE check out Hearts version of Unchained Melody…..it’s a stunning rendition
Led Zeppelin's Magnum Opus! And don't forget that the drummer is John Bonham's son, Jason Bonham (whom led zeppelin didn't know would even be there until he was on stage, another video shows his intro)
You remind me of a kid I went to school with in Michigan in the late 80s/early 90s (incidentally named Dave.) I can imagine him having this sort of reaction to this song.
I saw this whole tribute when it first came out on old school tv. PBS maybe? Can't remember. Anyway, I've seen a bunch of reactions to this. Yours is the best.
Yep, me too, on CBS (they usually carry the annual Kennedy Center Honors), & a million times since! Foo & Kid were good too, Kravitz tore it up! Then came this...EPIC ❤❤
I saw Led Zeppelin perform April 8, 1970 in Dorton Arena, Raleigh, NC. I was 17 and that was best concert to this day I ever saw. That puts them above Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Allman Brothers Band, Jethro Tull and many others. Watching this amazing video did bring tears to my old eyes.
I really enjoyed your feedback and your comments on the arrangements and production, thank you very much ;) I also enjoyed a lot with your "allergies", they must be contagious because it happened to me the same hehehehe ;) but how satisfying is that the music has those effects ;) Greetings from Spain ;) (Translated automatically by the software)
Ann knocked this cover out of the park, it still blows my mind all these years after. Notice that woman in the long hair in the audience rocking to it is Bonnie Rait. Kudo's to Jason playing his Dad's drum line for this song wearing his hat.
I cry every single time I watch that video, and I'm not ashamed to admit it! This however should have been nothing less than a 10 from you! What the hell, dude!
Plant never liked it when some other bands covered this song.....until this performance but a lot of the tears are coming from the fact that John Bonham’s son Jason is on the drums which belong to Bonham and he was wearing his dads Bowie had. Which was his dads favorite hat. That’s also the reason you see them get all excited when they opened the doors behind the orchestra. They are also wearing Bowie hats in honor of John Bonham.
Love this cover. I love seeing another performer's interpretation of a song. But it cracks me up every time I hear the last verse and think it took an entire orchestra and 2 choruses to match the power of Robert Plant's voice back in the day.
Fun fact, absolutely no one knew that Jason Bonham was going to be on drums, as far as I know not even heart knew, and Led Zeppelin definitely did not know. For every rehearsal, including the dress rehearsal, some of the footage of which is in this video, Dave Grohl was on drums, and that seemed a fitting tribute, Dave Grohl is a massive Led Zeppelin fan, and has been on drums for all of the Tenacious D songs that were inspired by Led Zeppelin, but turns out he was just doing it as a stand-in for jason, and what a great guy to do so
Great reaction David, love this performance too! No you are not the only one who tears up watching it either lol, and I'm not ashamed to admit it either
In my opinion this is the best cover performance in history. I challenge anyone to find a better on. I’ve watched it so many times I started watching other’s reactions to the video. Glad to see I’m not alone in my appreciation
A couple things... I hit "like" before the intro "harumphs" were finished!!! If you can bring a tear to Robert Plant's eye while covering one of their songs you know..."It'll get ya there!" Spending 24mins listening to a reaction to one song is the definition of "at my leisure". That is Jason Bonham (John's son) playing drums FYI...so that's pretty special.
Hey, Big Dave. Not to worry. I still get teary watching this memorable performance. It really wasn't much pressure for Ann and Nancy. They're pretty good friends with the guys. They even went to dinner with them after the show. Heart were really huge Beatle and Zep fans. Great reaction brother. PS: That was Jason Bonham on the kit. 🤘😊🤘
You do know that is John Bohnam’s son, Jason playing drums. He is wearing his father’s bowler hat, and playing his drum kit. The choir had the bowler hats on as a tribute. There is a slightly longer version where Jason is introduced before Heart. In that version, you see Robert Plant cry and wipe his eyes.
Yes, one of my top favorite performances. You have to have a certain type of voice to do this song, and Anne WIlson and Robert Plant have it (obviously). GREAT reaction sir!
Ann also picks up on all the tonal details and nuances in the phrasing. In some parts she almost sounds like Robert Plant as she emphaises certain syllables just the way he did, honoring the original song, yet still with her infusion. Wow, just fantastic is this tribute, it'll become legendary, where everything just came together even better than perfect.

LOL.
@@THEDavidHeretic 🤟
Love this version..she has pipes...they did it justice.. forgot I requested...glad you liked..you rock
You just watched the greatest cover in the history of music .. Rock legends performing in front of the Gods ..and they slayed it
Yes, Robert Plant is tearing up...He's watching his best friend's son, playing his best friend's drums, wearing his best friend's bowler hat, and absolutely killing it as a tribute to his father, Robert, Jimmy, and John Paul - and all as a surprise to them.
I feel like tearing up every time. Heart turns that song into a religious experience.
FEELIN' YOU Aaron!!!
Ann Wilson what a women she blew me away
Heart Started out as a Led Zeppelin cover band so im excited to hear this.
Yeah but none of those Heart members were there only Ann and Nancy, who weren't a part of Heart when they did the covers so your excitement for that part is kinda unwarranted...
Give the guitar player some love. He carried that tune from the time he came in to the end. Very emotional guitar 🎸 work.
Just to mention - the drummer is Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham
I swear I didn't recognize him.
What is amazing about this performance to me is that Zeppelin did this song with just a few guys and made it iconic. This was a true tribute to an great band and song. I doubt it will never be done like this again. Zeppelin will always do it best.
I love that you had tears...I do too every time I watch it...
This performance give me goosebumps.
That performance gets me every single time.
Beautiful & Strong Women !!! Absolutely have Loved them since the 70's.👌💞💖🎉
Props to Jason Bonham and the entire choir for the Bowler hats, commemorating John Bonham.
Seems those allergies got me also in my home office with all the windows closed and air conditioning on. :-) Awesome reaction as always! 👌
And don't forget that the drummer is John Bonham's son, Jason Bonham (whom led zeppelin didn't know would even be there until he was on stage, another video shows his intro)
i know i might not be a Led Zeppelin fan but i have to say to me this is one of the best all time covers of a song period.
I have the same tears coming down my eye bro!!
Everytime I watch this (1,000×) video, I have a few tears. Great reaction!!
They somehow made an instant classic...while doing a cover...LIVE... and under so much pressure. How'd they do it?
HEART.
That's fucking how.
Robert was thinking of John Bonham, seeing his son playing his drum kit.
You remind me of a kid I went to school with in Michigan in the late 80s/early 90s (incidentally named Dave.) I can imagine him having this sort of reaction to this song.
Man, what do you give a 10 too? I can’t imagine a better performance, maybe Zeppelin in their heyday, even then it’s close.
Hopefully this will explain why I don't give 10's. ua-cam.com/video/O-89K0Y6YiE/v-deo.html
@@THEDavidHeretic You could always do 9.91, etc. asymptotically approaching 10 :-)
(I agree about never actually giving 10's)
@@robertkrawitz8237 I may have to start using hundredths...
This is the second-highest score I've ever seen him give (though I haven't seen every reaction...).
@@curtismartin2866 O.k.
Legends honouring legends.
This is a glorious, no-holds-barred performance.
I really enjoyed your feedback and your comments on the arrangements and production, thank you very much ;)
I also enjoyed a lot with your "allergies", they must be contagious because it happened to me the same hehehehe ;) but how satisfying is that the music has those effects ;)
Greetings from Spain ;)

The remaining LZ members had no idea that Jason Bonham was going to be involved , it was pleasant surprise. They did such a wonderful job.
I read he was in a dressing room with David Grolh when Robert Plant came in so Jason had to hide behind a sofa until he left!
this may be my favorite reaction to this performance ever, and I thought I had seen all reactions to this. Somehow I had missed yours. Thank you!
Ann knocked this cover out of the park, it still blows my mind all these years after. Notice that woman in the long hair in the audience rocking to it is Bonnie Rait. Kudo's to Jason playing his Dad's drum line for this song wearing his hat.
This is THE GREATEST VERSION of Stairway EVER! I'm not sure how many times I've watch this.
One of the best performances I've ever seen. Makes me tear up towards the end
In my opinion this is the best cover performance in history. I challenge anyone to find a better on.
I’ve watched it so many times I started watching other’s reactions to the video. Glad to see I’m not alone in my appreciation
Jason Bonham filling in for his late father, John Bonham. All the singers wearing the bowler hats in honor of John
I both get chills and tear up when the full choir comes in.
Beautiful tribute , also amazing that Jason played drums for this . 👌👏
A couple things...
I hit "like" before the intro "harumphs" were finished!!!
If you can bring a tear to Robert Plant's eye while covering one of their songs you know..."It'll get ya there!"
Spending 24mins listening to a reaction to one song is the definition of "at my leisure".
That is Jason Bonham (John's son) playing drums FYI...so that's pretty special.
I’ve been catching several reactions to this incredible live performance. One word: Epic.
You have to know your not going to do it better than Led Zeppelin so you make it special and epic in its own way. Pure genius.
One of the greatest reactions amongst my boy LED ZEPPELIN LOVE YOU GUYS ANX YOU GOT ME AGAIN GUYS
Yes and they nailed it. Like I said......they NAILED it !!!!!!!!
Ann is a fuckin Goddess. An absolute beast of a singer.
I didn't recognize him, it's been about 20 years since the last time I saw him.
Ann and Nancy Wilson are phenomenal! Love heart!
This was a great performance, and you have a great eye for music, impressive. Thanks David.
Your appreciation and reaction made my night! My appreciated was so increased knowing Jason was on the drums!
The invoking of tears rates a 10 my brother
You know the Boyz in the balcony s heart is so full for the worship performance
This tribute is outstanding. Your reaction is the greatest.
The best cover i have ever seen
Your reaction to this historical event is the best I’ve seen! Love, love , love it.
Best reaction to this performance!!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
FEELIN' YOU Jenny!!!
I cried too!! When I saw Heart in the 80's I cried a lot!!!!
