now, we get back to basics and use the Redefine model and the original or regularly upscaled image in photoshop with layer masks and blending modes and start painting in the details that you want in the places and spaces that you need. This is the best way (for now) to use your tools to create the most impactful images with the most control.
Totally agree. AI art + good upscaler + Photoshop = limitless potential. For pro artists, designers or any visual creative it's a solid stack and skillset.
VERY excited to try this out. I’ve been working with diffusion models for years now, and have developed upscaling workflows that can match Magnific in comfyui (in CERTAIN photos. Namely people and human portraits) ….. and I’ve been generally let down by gigapixel thus far. This was what I felt was missing. I’ll try this out tonight and comment here with how it compares.
6:53 As far as the creativity level goes, it would be helpful if we could use masking to be able to apply different levels of creativity to different parts of the image. Some parts of the image might look better with a higher level of detail, while other parts like the eyes in this case don’t look so great with so much added detail. For example, the eye in this image looks distorted on the generations that have more detail. On the higher detail version, for some reason, the iris size has been made smaller, and there are these strange striated lines on the white part of the eye that appear to be radiating from the iris. There should be no lines like that on the white part of the eye.
I do this all time. I place them on layers in photoshop then delete the annoying parts that have gone tol far. There may be free alternatives to photoshop. All you need is an app that has layers and an erase tool.
I had the same thought! I wonder how difficult it would be to do that. At the moment I've accepted I'd have to Photoshop different upscale together but hopefully in the future this gets sorted.
Thanks for the excellent video! A few questions: 1-does it have a seed to use in a batch sequence? 2-have you tried it in a batch sequence to see the consistency? 3-do you think Topaz will bring this diffusion model into the video app? Thanks!
Thank you! To answer your questions: 1-does it have a seed to use in a batch sequence? - no seed option I can find right now 2-have you tried it in a batch sequence to see the consistency? - I haven't but that's a great idea. I have noticed minor difference between the prevew and output though, nothing concerning though. 3-do you think Topaz will bring this diffusion model into the video app? - that would be AMAZING - however I don't believe it will happen anytime soon, although I could be wrong. Thanks!
Is this available in Topaz Photo AI? or just Gigapixel. I just jumped from Gigapixel to Photo AI, but I wonder if I should ahve just stayed with Gigapixel.
I think this upscaler is a response to the upscalers like Magnific, so it is similar in nature. I want to add thought that basic upscalers, coupled with this make it the best stack imo - as you can add a tonne of detail, get a decent sized image, then use high fidelity or another basic upscaler to get it up to that next level size which doesn't require insane intricate details. So the total package is what sells it for me - until then I used to use Leonardo Ai's universal upscaler (simialr ot magnific and krea, and sometimes I still will use it), then Id bring that image into topaz for the second step.
You could experiment with sharpen setting under advanced or as devnull_ pointed out, photo AI has a focus function - but you miss out on the redefine upscaler
If you're in a creative industry the prices are nothing. I pay $80 a month (not per year) for adobe creative cloud - and many professionals do who could add this into their workflow
We’re using this professionally with zero issues. The tool is amazing and this update is fantastic. It does alot on it s own but like everything in life you have put your own weigth to get the best results
@@ScadooshGoat Photo AI is better because it incorporates all of the individual tools like upscaling, denoiser, deblur, etc. Only thing it doesn't have over gigapixel is this new AI upscaler. Hopefully it'll come to photo ai at some point.
Yeah, which is still a lot cheaper than magnific. Plus you only pay the renewal for upgrades, if you're happy with the version you download you don't need to renew.
Remember Magnific adds latent noise and changes other elements such as blob in the background that is supposed to be a face into a decent face. Gigawill not do this it will only upscale the blob.
Photo AI does upscaling but it's a general purpose app. If you just want upscaling then Gigapixel without a doubt. Photo AI is lovely though...especially if you don't have Nik Collection and other Topaz plugins ;)
@@zacharyshort384 I've got Nik collection so will see if it needs updating and, if so, what's been addd. Gigapixel looks great though (might even save some awful results generated by my iPhone's RAW files?)
@ Again, maybe it’s just the M3 or Os I’m on, but Gaga pixel acts very buggy on my machine, and though there are more “presets” than Upscayl, the basic job of upscaling seems to be more noticeable.
Could be, there's so many variables though too. To be fair against my response, Upscayl may also produce results preferable to you and/or the types of images you upscale. Nothing is every quite that black and white.
Yeah I get it man, not everyone can had that money over. But the funding of the program is what makes it possible too. Have you checked out Upscayl? Its not the same level as this, but it is a powerful free alternative.
It'd be useful for me from time to time. If they sold tokens for its use I'd buy. But no, its has to be locking you into a subscription model doesn't it? And not even monthly, but annually. Screw them.
It's not that expensive and being locked into a subscription basically means if you don't buy the monthly pass you don't get access this you actually get the version you buy for the year and if you're happy with the current version you don't have to keep buying a monthly subscription you can keep using the software so this is a much better deal
100%, I never use cloud and my computer is nothing special. I pay once a year and to be honest, most years I haven't needed the renewal - I just have anyway because it's really not much per year, especially ifyou're running a business. However, there are alternatives if this isn't for you. Upscayl is free - qualtiy is nowhere near the samew as this but incredibly useful if you are budget conscious.
This uses about 20GB of RAM even generating a small preview. you need minimum 32 gig even on M3 pro Macs to make this remotely bearable locally. If you have very powerful hardware it works, like running Flux 1.1 locally but without it you are going to be paying a lot to process these via the cloud. Topaz are charging a lot to run redefine via the cloud. Although the models do what they say you need serious hardware or else the $99 is just the entrance fee to the new features. Magnific have set the price bar and Topaz look set to follow.
It does take some processing power, but you can line a few up and process them overnight or plan it out . I do agree though, a good computer is what will make it more usable. If you're in a creative business that uses this technology its not massive cost. I remember many times charging $75ish just to upscale an image in Photoshop for a client, trying to tidy up the process and get it looking decent and this is way better and faster
That's awesome! I have no doubt I could work my way around those tools, as it would be extremely convenient and low cost to do. As I (and many others) have gotten older though with business, kids, staying fit, etc - dedicating time to learn those things can be not worth it and these platforms simplify the entry. Everyone's needs are different, and this is literally built on that technology. Do you use ComfyUI?
Absolute gold here, thanks for the extremely detailed breakdown 👍

Great video - did you miss the low res setting on your gen 2 face filter which did morph your right ear (left) into a larger pointy ear of an elf? 😀

I reckon so. The fact you can upscale locally, in bulk and are therefore not restricted by the credit system is a big one.
