- A bit of South Wales Sea Fishing at one of my favourite Bristol Channel Fishing marks. Having not been out in a few weeks, the withdrawal symptoms were starting to kick in and I just had to wet a line. There's something quite special about the mouth of the River Usk where it joins the Severn Estuary and being next to this piece of water is a great form of mental health therapy. A slow start to the session but then the fish turned on and it became quite busy. Bass, Thornback Ray, Dover Sole, Silver Eel, Flounder, Mullet etc. can all be caught from this mark at this time of the year. Used to be a great winter Cod Fishing spot back in the day.

Hahaha, that cheapy old boat rod is certainly your lucky mascot, it's saved your bacon a few times 😂 Shame about the lost conger, it looked as though it was a decent fish, judging by the bend in the rod.

Another great video. 👍 I love watching you posts as it shows the true nature of fishing hours sometimes days without a bite and all of a sudden the fish come on the feed. I've travelled from the North of Ireland right down to the south cost normally about 6-7 hour drive only to blank for 3 straight days but kept at it and have had some of the best sessions I've ever had. Plus I like the fact that you don't see it as a job and more of a hobby it come across better your videos are more relaxed and more enjoyable to watch. I was considering starting up a channel myself but thought I'd rather just stick to enjoying my fishing relaxing enjoying the scenery and wildlife. Because that's why I started in the first place. So thank you for putting in the time to make these vids they give me something to watch when I don't have the time to get out myself.

Yes I know you mean, it can be dead for days on end and then all of a sudden it can turn on, just like magic...I guess that's fishing ha! Indeed, I've accepted that this will never be my job, too much pressure involved, the UA-cam algorithm is ruthless. If you're thinking of setting up a channel for a bit of fun, then of course crack on but yes, I think you have made the right decision by not doing it...it can take over your life and make you ill. Like I said, I'm much more relaxed about it now and I can enjoy my fishing a lot more. Hope all is good with you, cheers as always 👍👍

Hi bud, medium tides are best for this venue as the rip is too strong on the bigger tides. Something like a 10.6m is about right. Used to get loads of Codling and Whiting here back in the day but they hardly turn up nowadays, like a lot of places locally the fishing is not what it was unfortunately, sad really. Well keep trying though 👍

Another fine video Gareth, really good to see you back. Watching you catch that 'snotty', as we used to call them, brought back great memories of fishing the Rumney river, back in Cardiff where I was born....we'd go on a Sunday afternoon, tide allowing & as you said, 20 eels was normal & if you caught a flattie....you'd talk about it for a week!!!....HA!!

I do enjoy catching a fish or two, however the time in nature plays a huge part in the bigger experience.

I use to catch eels in the river taff in cardiff take them home dad would jelly them ,that was back in 1968 did not know there was to be a problem in the future ,the river was teeming with eels and billions of glass elvers that licensed netters would harvest on certain tides ,good old days with my dad fishing ,magic !!
Yes great days weren't they Mark, the Eels were extremely common. Even when I was a kid back in the 80's, you'd catch loads of them but sadly there are now in severe decline...greed and money are to blame as per usual, it's sad. Thank you mate, I appreciate it. It was certainly nice to be out fishing again, it was too long! I'm probably not the best person to ask as I'm a bit behind the times when it comes to the latest tackle/rods etc the market as most of my stuff is years old and I rebuild my old rods. As for the quiver, the Century Beachcaster quiver looks ideal. As for the spinning rod, you won't go wrong with a Shakespeare Ugly Stick...well made and strong (long handle option better in my opinion) The Shakespeare Salt is the most popular tripod, the blue one, although most of the cheaper ones around the 30 to 40 pound mark will do the job perfectly well. Yes boy, it's a special place and you rarely see anyone there, bird life is incredible. Whiting and Cod season is approaching and I can keep some of those for the fish pie...aye, tidy. Cheers 👍👍
nice video Gareth, it can become a fishing video obsession and i know because i started to get into that trap and then thought wow, take a step back and just fish for the enjoyment and ok film it. but don't go out souly just to put a video up on UA-cam. i would rather wait 2 or 3 months to see a good fishing video of yours rather than once a week of yourself having to under pressure putting up content just for the alga rhythms for followers. don't stop doing what your doing and enjoy what you do.

I've come close on many occasions to knocking this on the head as it's a case of very little reward for a huge amount of effort. This particular mark is an old favourite of mine, I've been fishing it for over 35 years and I have some great memories, had some great fish too...it's just a nice place to be. I have fished all of the top marks in South Wales but nowadays I like going back to my roots and doing the things I love the most. Hi gareth you ok pal, well done in the end, turned into a good session. Your right about the silver eel, its the same were i am these days. The late 70's early 80's we used to catch loads . I watched something before were gangs were getting the ones just spawned and selling them to some were like vietnam???. All the best gareth from GRIMSBY.

It's a big shame that the Eels are in decline, billions and billions of elvers have been taken over the years, lots sold to overseas markets as you say. Pure greed and there's not enough enforcement. I hope some day I bump into you on St brides or goldcliff marks just to shake your hand. I lost my dad about 5 years ago too. He lives on through me carrying on what we did together and out fishing. They are always there with us Gareth. I know your pain, I feel it too. Try and remeber those good times together out fishing.

I caught a small eel at weymouth Harbour when I was a boy, about an inch thick and about eighteen inches long, a dark green colour on top. Not sure what kind it was, could you please tell from my description.
Yes that would have been a Green Eel, otherwise known as a Silver Eel or European Eel. Sadly their numbers have declined over the years and they are not as common as they once were. Thanks for watching 👍

Brilliant. I was fishing penarth slipway with mum only yesterday for the same targets on two running legders.. one Conger rig and one for sole.. had 7 bites intotal from the flood to the last of the ebb.. good bites too.. but sadly not a fish hooked up.. most bites came in close some just behind the surf.. crabs were a pain too.. but i had a great day fishing the lazy neap tide.. amd can't wait till monday i tetirm with reelminds for seconds.. this vid buffed my confidence. And hopefully next time i get that bite that sets the hook.. ❤ keep at it its not how many vids you make that attracts fans its how you do it.. ❤ tightlines for your next trip out 😊

Unlucky on the Penarth blank but it's just nice being out there isn't it, taking it all in. I wonder if those bites you were getting were from small Bass or Mullet, quite a few around at the moment. The same happened to me recently when I was down at St Brides in Newport, loads of good bites but I just couldn't connect. I'm no expert but in my opinion Brixham in South Devon is a great Mackerel venue, off the Breakwater, usually get a few off there, especially on the rising tide. Takes around 2hrs 15mins from the South Wales area. The Gower is an option, Southgate area etc but I guess that can be a little hit or miss, never quite know if the Mackerel will turn up. Brixham is the best Mackerel fishing I've ever experienced. Cheers 👍👍

Can you still catch mackerel from the shore in October in late October.
Yes you can Clive but not where I live, need to go further West or South. Down in Brixham for example, you can catch them right throughout the Winter. Cheers 👍👍
I have said it before, this is not your average fishing video, it's almost on par with 'Passion for Angling' the fishing is as good as any UK fishing could be, pot luck on the day, never knowing what's coming, but the whole package, the scenery, wide shots, the quality, editing all make this an excellent viewing, something to look forward to in my view anyway. Thanks for sharing and tight lines.
Ah thank you mate, I appreciate that. I used to love 'Passion for Angling', it was a great Sunday evening watch, I still watch some of them today as you can't beat the old fishing programmes. My priority when filming is to make a relaxing watch, or try anyway, and any fish that turn up are a bonus. This was an enjoyable day out at one of my favourite marks, I couldn't grumble. Iv just subed last night and already watch a load of your videos. We have similar years experience fishing, but I'm new to estuary fishing. I use to fish the rocky north Wales coast, as well as fishing being my career choice. Your videos are bang on point and I'm loving the local content your sharing. I'd almost lost hope until I seen your channel if I'm honest, so thank you for restoring that. I'm a cycling angler, and been told there's a lot a places we can't fish, do you need permission to get behind the station there?

I've not done much fishing around North Wales but I fancy some of those rocky marks up there, they always look appealing! No you don't need permission to fish behind the power station but it's not an easy mark to reach, it's a 25/30 minute walk (taking a bike may not be an option due to the terrain). If you ever want to fish it, drop me a message on here and I will give you detailed directions. Once you're there the fishing is nice and comfortable. If you take a look at the video before that you will see that I'm on the other side of the Usk mouth and that's much easier to get to. Cheers for watching 👍👍

I woukd greatly appreciate any advice, we fish basically the same way so it's marks I struggle with down here now. Up north you can fish anywhere on any tides. Ah yes Monkey Island is a great spot. I've tried lure fishing on the tidal stretch of the Usk many times but never had any luck, I think it's because the water is too murky. In my opinion you're better off with bait, either ragworm or lugworm usually does the trick 👍👍
@@riversidewithme I had a couple of ragworm left over from yesterday's blank, but flatties keep taking the baits. Tried noisy luring, couple of follows but no takes. Ended up with kids behind me throwing stones at me for no reason, so I left just at high water. That transporter bridge session, 'the ol faithful' got my interest right up around here.

I’d imagine the majority of UA-camrs started out the same way as you, but what’s that saying about out of little acorns 💪. The main thing is that you enjoy what you’re doing, and your subscribers obviously do 🎣🐟
