I made a VR game to propose to my girlfriend

- For ~1.5 months I spent my evenings and weekends to make my first VR game. My girlfriend had no idea I had any involvement in the making of this game - let alone that I was going to propose to her.

The first levels are deliberately "generic" looking, to lead her astray and make the surprise (9:36) even bigger.

Hey mate, it's okay if you can't make a VR game. All it matters is you make the occasion special
Not every proposal needs to be like another. The best proposal you can do is the one that suits you two's lifestyle and personality the most! For some people the best proposal can be this, for others it can be a perfect evening in their favorite restaurant followed by a proposal, for others it can be a proposal after a day in Disneyland, etc. Everyone has different things they love and tying it into your proposal is the key to make it the most special :)

edit: plus, the gameplay seems quite straightfoward and easy, so i think this all could be done in one run either way without any issues if they know how to play vr games. for all we know she could play vr games all the time. and even then i think they wouldnt have much trouble even if theyve never played a vr game before

I actually attended a marriage in virtual reality because the 2 people both had relatives in other countries, but they wanted to make sure everyone could attend. They walked down the aisle, kissed, put on the rings, said their vows, had to reception, took marriage photos--ALL OF IT in vr. It was honestly really cool, beautiful, and scary. I cried, and not just because my forehead hurt after the first 2 hours.
Oh wow that’s really interesting and cute! Out of curiosity, did everyone have to get VR headsets for this, or how did it work? I’m super interested :) it’s such a cool idea to put into fruition
@janetliu5231 That's a good question! Luckily, most of the people who attended the event already had VR headsets from other family gatherings in the past. They were a pretty techy family, and wanted to stay well-connected even though they were spread all over. I think they may have bought a few of the super close relatives (like, I think, their parents and maybe siblings) headsets. it was just taking into account as part of the cost of the wedding). There were a couple of people--maybe 10 or 12 (it was kind of a small wedding)--who didn't. But the entire thing was done on this app called Altspace, which has a 2D Desktop mode so you can interact with the virtual world without a VR Headset.

The UX design in this needs an award. Everything was built to 'just work' and guided the user so easily without any extra explanation (I know the user is likely to have used VR before, but I feel like that wouldn't matter). The only other time I've seen that in VR is Half Life Alex. Amazing work!

The UA-cam recommendations algorithm is a magical thing, but this proposal is even more so! It's enough to make a grown man cry...and that's okay. You know that feeling that you get when some big moment is about to happen to a bunch of characters you really love in a show, those, butterflies, for lack of a better description. This video was the first thing I’ve ever watched to have given me that in three minutes. The talent and care put in to make a life changing experience so special is beautiful. This was so incredible! You managed to pull just the right amount of heart strings. You truly went above and beyond with this! I wish you both the best, I can tell there is so much love there.

I don’t cry much, I tend to be rather calm emotionally. The end of the video still got a few tears from me. That experience is going to be a memory that will never be forgotten. It reminds me of how I proposed to my wife by testing several missiles, making the smoke from the missiles colorful, all launched in a way to form a rainbow. As I kneeled down, the case I held was a special button that said Yes on it, and as she pressed it, one more missile launched for fireworks. It was beautiful.

People say that people like this guy make proposing impossible but the truth is you can do it anywhere, the one that expects something over the top isnt going to get what they wish. And that is said for both the proposer and the proposed.
This was so lovely and absolutely whimsical. The ambience that was created in the game was so dreamy and tender, similar to what one feels when falling in love with another. Tears were streaming from my face when the memories segment came in. What a beautiful way to honor the relationship between the two of you. I really felt the impact of the love that you have for your future wife. As an aspiring game dev I hope to create something as impactful for anyone that I cherish so deeply. I really like the progression of the game, from cringy "welcome to the new chapter of your life" and "chores" to twisty "perhaps this isn't just a regular VR expirience" and than incredibly awesome and wholesome continuation with fairy graphics, nostalgic music an pictures.
