  • An FCE or "Functional Capacity Evaluation" is typically a 4-hour test to determine the physical abilities of an injured worker. Depending on your region, the test may also be referred to as a PCE or "Physical Capacity Evaluation".
The test typically involves a variety of physical tests, including lifting/carrying tasks, as well as more repetitive tasks, such as reaching and repetitive use of the arms/hands.
In addition, your FCE examiner (often a physical therapist or occupational therapist) will assess your tolerance for different positions, such as sitting, standing and walking.
Preparing for an FCE can be somewhat stressful, especially if you feel like you're being pushed through the workers' compensation system.
If you have any questions or concerns leading up to your FCE, please post them below, and I'll do my best to help you prepare!

I will ask my PT as soon and possible to help me assess my own function capacity after watching this video. Thank you, Gordon Physical Therapy!

Pamela Bass wow really,...so what happened after that with your job? I haven’t been scheduled for mine yet I’m actually getting a second injection next week and have to more days of physical therapy. My job duties are driving a 40ft bus for the airport and handling 450 pieces of luggage. My neurologist did my fmla ppwk and said I’m unable to perform my job duties, so I guess I have to wait to take this test.

Sorry for my delayed response, Pamela. Hopefully your FCE report reflected your overall physical abilities, taking into account ALL of your medical issues. Did you feel like the report was a fair assessment of your physical/work abilities?

Great informative info. At what point do physical therapist or whoever suggest a FCE? An does everyone get one when yr out of work for a long period of time?

That's a good question. Usually you're primary doctor will request one when they think it's necessary, or some type of vocational counselor or nurse case manager will request one. They usually occur when you've plateaued in your progress, and they want to establish your safe, functional capabilities (and limitations).

@@GordonPhysicalTherapy I sprained my ankle at work (I drove truck, was walking on very uneven ground) and tore 4 ligaments/tendons. This happened July 8th of this year. After hearing you say it's usually at least a year or more like three or four out from injury it seems ridiculously early to do a fce. What is your take on this? Is it simply that my orthopedic surgeon has given up on me or doesn't want to deal with workman's comp anymore? He hasn't done surgery and he refuses to do surgery on me.

Does a pt typically address a time restriction in the FCE? Im getting conflicting answers, didnt receive one in my report, and work comp has taken it and run with it.

If your doctor has you on time restrictions, that should be taken into account. Unless your doctor agrees with the FCE report (and the report says you can work full-time).

Thanks for your response! Had a time restriction that was agreed upon by 2 work comp Drs prior to having FCE done. Now I can no longer get anyone to address it since it's been signed off on by a 3rd non work comp Dr! 😵‍💫
