  • A ballet by Stéphen Delattre from Victor Hugo's novel
The historical novel of "Notre Dame de Paris", published in 1831, is probably the most famous work of the great French author Victor Hugo, next to "Les Misérables". The well-known book has influenced and became the basis for many stories, movies and plays, namely "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
The Delattre Dance Company is now presenting this celebrated narration in a fresh, neo-classical and modern ballet version. The choreographer Stéphen Delattre brings back to life its novel characters within his own typical words and world, in an emotional poetic ballet style.
Part of this extraordinary and exciting ballet, back to the medieval Paris, the audience will have the chance to get closer to the legendary Quasimodo, a more than unsightly man, who lives in the Cathedral of "Notre-Dame de Paris" as the bell ringer, but whose destiny calls him to fall in love with the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda at a dance festival. Be there when Frollo, the jealous archdeacon, commands the execution of Esmeralda after she has denied him for the name of purity and love for the captain Phoebus.
Victor Hugo's novel is based on a true story, unforgettable and with strong contents about the power of religion and morals, versus the power of love, which seem still to be anchored nowadays in our society.
This piece was created for the Delattre Dance Company and was premiered in 2016 at the Mainzer Kammerspiel Theatre in Mainz (Germany).

Incredible dancing, acting and choreography. A small miracle really in this day and age. Thank you for this creation. (And the music was amazing.)

It's a wonderful book, but it isn't based on a true story.
