  • Solo piano version of Steely Dan's Rikki Don't Lose That Number, a US #4 hit in 1974 and the opening track from the LP Pretzel Logic (a copy of which is propped up on the music stand). The song is written by Donald Fagen, has a vaguely bossa nova feel and starts in the key of E. I have also tried to recreate Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's guitar solo after the second chorus, which is ten times easier to play on the piano and sounds ten times less good. Really heartfelt. This is a very good rendition. It has a Latin rhythm, and the sound is very good. Talent here. And this is a piano teacher. Keep in touch.

    Good work at the song. The writer said he wrote it on the piano and, against demands from the producers, et al, kept it in the final cut. When it came out in 1974 I tried to pick up the chords on the guitar but it was too complex for me, although I've seen others play it from ear.

      I'm afraid I don't use sheet music -- I just listen to the melody, the chords and the bassline and work them out by ear.

    I like your interpretation but why do you end the verse on a G# giving you an E major chord? Listening to Steeley Dan I hear Donald Fagan sing a G natural with simple E bass accompaniment. There doesn't seem to be any other instrument. This can only be E minor.

    • @johnnyjazzman

      Do you mean the chorus or the verse? The verse clearly ends with that weird B major chord. The chorus ends with the line "when you get home". The chord at that point sounds major to me, but I could be wrong.

    • @saucedevourer8858
      @saucedevourer8858 6 років тому

      Yeah, it ends on a G natural, but that's the chorus though.

      And another thing I noticed, is during the guitar solo, right around 2:49, the right chord progression is Fmaj7, Gmaj7, Fmaj7, Emin7 You played Fmaj7, Emin7x2. Nonetheless, great playing though.
