    Hi Hannah! Just wanted to tell you that your channel has quickly become one of my favorites. I truly enjoy learning about your values and your thought process when it comes to consumerism. I truly believe it adds a lot of value to the UA-cam beauty community because its a very unique perspective. But most of all, I love how genuine and grateful you are and how much positivity you transmit. You are the perfect example of the saying "be the light you want to see in the world". Thank you so much for inspiring us every day!

    Wow. It's amazing how much makeup and skincare you have been gifted. You have received some amazing products and I can see that you're grateful for every item. I am most impressed with your ability to let go of the items that aren't perfect for your curated collection. Watching you be somewhat brutal with your decisions has given me strength to do the same with my collection. Thanks for sharing!

    I used to buy/keep a lot of products thinking "I don't have anything like this" and as I have aged I have come to realise that when we make this statement, we should ask ourselves that WHY don't we have anything like this in our collection. More often than none the answer (at least in my case) is I don't have this because I don't use colour/formula like this.
    Loved your process. Just thought I'll share my two cents 😁

    Fantastic video as always Hannah! It's really important to ruthlessly screen what makes its way into our permanent collections and even on a larger scale, our homes and our lives. By the way...your eye look is absolutely beautiful never take it off ever oh my gosh.

    Hey Hannah! I just had to say that I truly enjoy your videos. You manage to make it feel like we're just sitting down and chatting about this over a coffee, and I really enjoy that. Congrats on wrapping up your no-buy! You've been a huge inspiration to me. I look forward to watching more of these declutter videos from you... I'm pretty good at not over-buying stuff, but I'm awful at decluttering, so hearing your thought process has given me a lot of tools to work on that!

    The UD perversion DOES get drier over time 😉, I prefer it after it's been open for awhile too, its a fave of mine, repurchased countless. One of the reasons I like it is bc it never gets dry and flaky on me. xo

    Looks like a satisfying declutter! I also hate sticky face products. Regarding the Perversion mascara... it's a wet formula so I usually scrape the brush a few times before using it. It's my favourite mascara BUT the brush has to be scraped well or it creates a lot of clumps. I usually buy the $12 travel size bc the big one has way too much product inside! Also it works well with the UD lash primer (which I've had a few samples of).

    I depotted the alamar palette a couple days ago and they held up really well. My sister and I went a bit crazy depotting all we could and we love it! I think we did 4 colourpop palettes, the alamar, and the big white Jaclyn Hill × Morphe palette. We just used a thin pair of tweezers that I bent so we could slide it between the cardboard packaging and pry it apart without bending it a ton.

    I wanted to say about the Benefit brow primer.. I inherited it from a friend who decluttered it and have used it on and off. I would say the most useful thing I've found about it is giving me an easier application of my brow products after I do my skincare. I've found that a lot of the times if there isn't a good length of time (at least 30 min or so) between when I do my skincare and my makeup, I have a lot of problems getting my brow pencils to apply strongly, and I get really bad hardpan in any powders I use because the brush picks up residue from my skincare and sunscreen. Since I usually don't have have time to wait for my skincare to 'set' for long enough, it's annoying. I have noticed that using the brow primer helps mitigate these problems even if I do my makeup right after my skincare, which is really nice. I won't purchase it myself when I run out, however, as I switched to cruelty free products and also can't justify a high-end price for something that makes such a small change. There are probably dupes that are more affordable if I really wanted to find something.
    Wow, long winded, but just wanted to give you my thoughts in case that helps with your product testing!

    Hi Hannah! You look great as always. I love how grateful you are but I do believe the message can be encouraging gifts. Part of the purpose of no buy is to love what you have. Gifting, to extent, defeats that purpose. I become more and more conscious about my shopping behavior because fast fashion industry is killing this planet. I am not a liberal or outspoken environmentalist but I am conscious about my behavior.

    • @4444f-s7c
      @4444f-s7c 5 років тому +5

      Therefore, big youtubers and people who have a lot makeup that they throw away and never use trouble me a lot. They claim that they care about animal rights and only from cruelty free brands that their behavior is desyroying the eco system.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 років тому +1

      I hope it's not encouraging gifts! My hope was that it would do the opposite (show how quickly things can become overwhelming and show how much less likely I am to love something I didn't choose). But I really appreciate the feedback, I will keep thinking about how I address these things on my channel.

    • @MissBeeeBeee
      @MissBeeeBeee 5 років тому +3

      Michelle James I agree with you. The message is confusing. Accepting gifts seems diametrically opposed to using what you have. Plus, by receiving and opening new packages, we are still riding the dopamine train... but, this time, for free! : ( I hope there is a way to address this. I may be wrong, but it feels like the overall message/subtext of these videos encourage gift-giving by impressionable viewers... “poor girl, she wants a $170 palette, but she can’t buy it...let me give it to her. This way we all feel great about ourselves and like we have connected.” Think about it. I hope there is a way to address this too. Of course Hannah can make up whatever rules she wants, but this does not feel clean to me. Sorry.

    Hannah,I realy loved this video.You showed with this video your totaly new mindset,about the products you want to keep or pass along to somebody else so that you don’t get overwelmed by products.It looks like you could make that dissision easy,because you learned in your no buy year what you realy love,and what you expect about the products.I learned so much in my no buy year but I still find it hard to declutter products or pass them to somebody else,I am always afraid that I Will regret that I did Some products away,it get’s easier as when I started,and I do a declutter every three months ,but the main products I declutter is because they expired,that’s for me one of the reasons that I Will go on with my no buy because I don’t want to be overwelmed by products again.I still have so many products to work through,and that I want to empty,and I feel that I am not strong enough to make better choises about products I want to declutter,or pass to someone else.First I need to get stronger to make those dissisions easier,and I need to empty a lot more products that I realy love.When I started in January,I thought that I would find it a lot easier to declutter products that I didn’t love,but it turned out that I started to use the products that I didn’t love for a longer period of time,so that I learned those products very well,and almost every product I learned to love by using it for a longer period of time,mostly because you try to use these products in a different way,or in combination with other products,or using those products with other technics.And because of this I decided to go on with my no buy,so I can use up as many products as possible before the expire dates,and I know that the consequence Will be that my no buy Will last a few years,but I realy don’t mind that.I go on with the same rules when I ran out completely in a catagory I am allowed to buy one new product in that catagory,I am allowed to get pressents on special occasions,and every three months I Will declutter the expired products and the products that I realy don’t like.I am glad that you Made your rules clear for next year for yourself,and I think that you have fantastic rules,so you don’t get overload with new make-up,and it’s great to put every new product in a box,and give yourself the time to learn to know that product,and than make a dissision if you want to keep it or not.I know that I Will grow and learn more,and there Will be one day that I can do it this way to,but when I would do that know,I would end up with more products as I started my no buy last year,just because I can’t make the dissision if I want to keep it,or pass it to a friend,because I can almost every product work in a way that I love.I have now a totaly different mindset as before I started my no buy,and learned so much,but I also learned what my weaknesses are now.A lot of my weaknesses went away,like I don’t feel the urge to buy new make-up,I can totaly resist the salesor the products which or on clarance,but I still need to grow a little more.And I want to spend comming year less money on clothes,and I Will buy comming year only beauty related products(as much as we need)on clarance,because I kept a list last year how many beauty related products we used as a family,so I Will buy and stock the right amount of products when they are on a big sale,to save Some money.And I still have Some of these products still in stock,like soap,shaving Cream,shampoo,body lotion,toothpaste,mouthwash,showergel,make-up remover,moisturizer etc,I only don’t have the right amount yet for a year,that’s why I listen every product last year,I love to save Some money because we are on a low budget,and when I have all these products for a whole year that Will save us lot’s of money with our weekly grocery’s.Hannah this video was realy fantastic,I enjoyed it so much,and it Made me think how far I am in my no buy process,Thank you so much xoxo,wendy

    I did the whole depot thing with the alamar palette. Those eyeshadows are amazing but it’s such a limited color scheme and every look I’ve seen with the palette is pretty much the same. Also I don’t know if you’ve heard of Samantha Ravndahl but she recently made a video about no longer accepting PR, which I found to be very informative and insightful. If you haven’t seen it, it could be helpful to know how she used to sort her PR packages and handle all the excess

    Hi Hannah, this is unrelated but if you have a second I had a quick question about the CosRX Galactomyces tone balancing essence you mentioned a few videos ago- does it ever ball up on your skin when you layer other products over it? I think I might just be using too much (a pump and a half), I got excited when I read the research (secondhand through a k beauty blog) about how using more first toner applied with your hands makes a difference in results😅

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 років тому

      Hi Alexandra! funny, I never have this problem with that product. I always use just one pump and pat it into my skin with my palms for about 30 seconds, and then I wait until it seems like it's totally soaked in before I use other things. If it's sitting on top of your skin and you go right in with something with silicone in it, that could be causing the problem. What are you layering over it?

    • @alexandraferguson5084
      @alexandraferguson5084 5 років тому

      @@HannahLouisePoston thanks, I appreciate it!! I used 1.5 pumps of the CosRX and let it set in for a couple minutes, then a small amount of The Ordinary's buffet serum, a whole dropper full of MadHippie's vitamin c (derivative) serum, and then let it set for a couple minutes before 4-5 drops of The Ordinary's rosehip seed oil over my face and decollote. None of it pilled until the oil- maybe it's just too much vit c serum for my face to absorb? I don't see any silicone (or '-methicone's) in the ingredients list of any of those products. I'll try it with less vit c serum tomorrow!

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 років тому +1

      huh. I'd guess it's just the layers of serums and then so much oil overtop, which is maybe dissolving some of the serums (if the layers are still there instead of soaked completely in). When I go in with that much serum in the morning, usually just use 1 or 2 drops of oil, just the lightest layer rather than slathering it on. But another option could be to alternate between serums, using just one or two each morning.

    I enjoyed watching this video. I was also wondering whether receiving these gifts eased the no-buy year. If you think about it, having new products coming into your life even during the no-buy changes how you perceive it entirely. You still have the excitement of new things coming in and trying new products. Would it feel different if you did not receive any new items?

I may have spent a lot more money than usual, but I carefully selected items that I know I will use. Where before I would reward myself and buy stuff just because it was on sale and never use it again.

    Hi Hannah... I do like your channel and a lot of the things you do and say. Running your own business is difficult and I can stand behind that 100% having been there myself. What people choose to do with things or 'gifts' is a personal choice of course. However, for me at least there is a 'grey area' in which someone takes things that someone else took money and time to purchase and then declutters those things because there is no 'place' for it in your living space... I don't know what the best thing would be to do. But, it makes me uncomfortable that these 'gifts' are being purged. I would guess they are Christmas gifts? Not being able to attach the gift givers name to the gift saying that, 'They know who they are' is again a 'grey area' that makes me feel 'uneasy.' Would considering removing your UA-cam p.o. box information be possible or sending the 'gifts' back unopened be possible? If the 'gifts' were sent back unopened maybe the sender could get their money back or give it to someone would what want the item and use it.

    This is my critique and I mean it in the most objective and respectful way possible. You have created a loophole to acquire new things without paying for them. I am sure it is unintended, but it is still a loophole and needs to be addressed. By posting videos that suggest you are willingly depriving yourself of anything new, you inadvertently recruit impressionable viewers into “problem-solving” for you (a very common psychological dynamic) and ultimately giving you gifts. So now you acquire new things without buying them, which feels icky to me. Some of these gifts cost literally hundreds of dollars (not to mention shipping costs). Regardless of cost, however, they are new things in a channel that preaches using what you have. I would respect this project if you had called it a “low buy” and carefully made decisions to purchase things with your own money (this would probably mean fewer clicks and fewer subscribers, of course, because it does not sound as radical). By preaching deprivation and acknowledging the dream behind coveting this or that product, you unknowingly invite others to fill the gap by giving you new things. In addition, you shared with us that you became VIB Rouge this year, which means clicking “place order” buttons, receiving new packages, opening new packages, receiving new samples, and so forth. Read dopamine dopamine dopamine. You have addressed your critics by stating that they don’t understand what you are trying to do. That is right: I don’t understand how your project is a “no buy” when you continue to receive new things and to shop to the point of becoming Rouge. You say you shopped for replacements and gifts. Still a new package every single time. Replacements could be found on aisle 5 at Target. And do people really need a $90 gift from you or is that another loophole to shop? I thought you were serious in your “using what you have” journey, so everything that I just said does not feel clean to me. I started watching you because I find you eloquent and very well spoken. Maybe I will catch you next year when this project is over. Deprivation never works.

      it sounds like my no-buy isn't as strict as yours would be. I intentionally wrote rules that I knew I would be able to stick to, I haven't broken them, and the year has been totally and completely transformative for me. I should also note that when I made the rule allowing myself to receive gifts, it was the beginning of 2018 and I hadn't started a channel yet. I had no viewers then and no idea that this would happen. Being on UA-cam has had an unexpected affect on my project. I'm not perfect at navigating it, but I'm doing my best to adjust to new circumstances and staying totally transparent about the process.

    • @MissBeeeBeee
      @MissBeeeBeee 5 років тому +1

      Hannah Louise Poston Hannah, you don’t have to explain yourself to me or defend yourself. I have been watching you (as I said, I highly admire your eloquent speech), and I have at least an idea of what happened. What I did was put together everything you shared and pointed out discrepancies. Of course you could not have anticipated this, especially since you joined a public platform like YT. Of course you can make up whatever rules you find appropriate for your own life. Of course you can call your project whatever you want and not what I prefer because I find the name misleading. I stand by what I said. In hindsight, you inadvertently (inadvertently!!!) created a hypocritical situation whereby you acquired lots of new things (via buying or being given, does it matter?) while continuing to preach using what you have. Hindsight is always 20/20 and, at the end of 2018, we have the benefit of that. (I also shared I don’t believe in deprivation simply because I have never seen it work. There is always a compensatory mechanism somehow.) As we have seen, there are lots of impressionable people out there. When you repeatedly state that you want a product, then go on to acknowledge the dream behind owning it, then reiterate you really want this or that... you are implicitly, unknowingly, inviting impressionable folks who admire you to get it for you. Too bad you (and I) never bought that crystal ball, right?!!
      If you put forth the concept of “gifts” to thousands of people, you are going to get tons of gifts. Many people will feel compelled to “help” you. Then you come back and post a video with all the new things you acquired via gifts... in a channel where the “using what you have” concept has been featured very heavily... well, we step into hypocritical territory. I said this needs to be addressed with your viewers, but I should take that back. I cannot tell you what to do. You do you, it is your platform, not mine. I do appreciate how transparent you have been, and I admire that more than you will ever know. One example is you sharing how you became VIB Rouge. That took guts. Please keep it up, and I am sure you will. I am looking forward to your videos in 2019, when I would love to learn from your purchasing decisions. Speaking of purchasing stuff, can we talk about money for a minute? I hate the new “normal”. Someone somewhere started charging, say, $200 for an eyeshadow palette (I repeat, **powder** eyeshadow). All of a sudden, this is totally acceptable and a totally valid part of the beauty world. I don’t get it. Now “high-end” has a new normal, a new standard. Now it is standard practice to covet and buy things that have laughable prices. Of course if a person wants to spend their own money in this way, go ahead (obviously). I may be the only person that finds these prices simply unacceptable to the point of refusing to purchase these things. Anyway, this is a tangent, sorry. Thank you again, and peace. I hope I am coming across respectfully. I admire you and your content. Consulting a crystal ball would have helped, but oh well. Maybe I will buy one for you, lol!! This way we will all be able to see the future and adjust accordingly... Peace. 😊

      There is a huge difference between buying your own things and receiving gifts when you have an addiction to shopping. All of those highs that you get through the process of shopping are not there. It's about the impulse to purchase unnecessary things. Alot of the things she received were not brand new. Many items were from people inspired by what she was doing and started getting rid of their own things. They sent it to her. It's more about the lessons learned by doing a know buy year, recognizing your patterns, and having a time of self reflection. Everyone that I have seen do a no buy or low buy year has developed their own rules. Some more strict that others. This is also a learning process. She speaks about realizing certain things and understanding bad decisions she made. This is simply her experience with a no buy year. No one said it was going to be perfect , she was going to do everything right, and make all the right decisions. We are witnesses to an experience not a step by step how to demonstration.

    • @MissBeeeBeee
      @MissBeeeBeee 5 років тому

      I am sorry, but we will have to agree to disagree. I honestly do not think it matters how new things are acquired. Let’s say a NEW package arrives at your doorstep. Does the brain really know the difference? I would actually feel *more* thrilled that I didn’t pay for it?! Who does not get a high from receiving a present? Comment below if you don’t. I agree that many of the things she received were used, but they are new *to her*. New is new, and the human dopamine system is still at work. We are all human and we are all in the same boat. I am no different. She did shop a lot too (more dopamine)... VIB Rouge status is not given. It is earned via spending money (namely $1,000 or more) to buy new & unnecessary things, whether it is for you or for someone else. More new things, clicking “place order,” opening packages... this is all dopamine. I honestly do not think that we can turn off our dopamine system, don’t get me wrong. I am simply saying that a “NO buy” is not what she did. No means no; just the same as new means new. No new things. Yes, you can make up whatever rules you want, but if you call it a NO buy and then make up loose rules with loopholes where you can actually acquire new things, then you are stepping into hypocritical territory. Saying one thing and doing another. Preaching loving what you have one day and posting a video with all brand new stuff the next day. Call it a “low buy” and nothing I am saying applies. Change the name in the middle of the process if necessary! But then your channel’s name is not going to be as radical and you may not be as popular. When I first saw her channel, I was very impressed. I thought: “is she really not going to shop for a year??”... only to keep watching and become disappointed when I realized she didn’t stop. I should have known better, of course. As for stopping acquiring unnecessary things... other than food and water (shelter too), everything else in this world is unnecessary. That is up for reflection. As for perfection, that doesn’t exist. I would never expect perfection out of this process. I do appreciate the self-reflection that this process generated for her (and I am sure it was transformative), but this has nothing to do with perfection. I am merely pointing out that she unknowingly created a hypocritical situation, that is all... preaching using what you have and then acquiring a bunch of new things without paying for them. If I could take a wild guess, it seems she actually struggles with perfectionism (but I don’t know that; it is a guess). At first I thought she “should” acknowledge this situation to her audience, then I gave up on that because she can do whatever the heck she wants. I thought so because I acknowledge and take responsibility for my hypocrisy. We are all hypocritical in one way or another (again, comment below if you are not in any way). I am not claiming moral superiority because I am human like everyone else and sometimes I do act in a hypocritical way. The difference is I notice it and I acknowledge it; it is a part of being human. That being said, I should not expect people to do the same. See... This is why I have decided to go on a “no comment” on YT... because a lot of people cannot read a comment and simply take it for what it is.
