What do First Gold Hops Taste Like? SmaSH Beer Experiment

  • Опубліковано 12 лип 2022
  • This week, First Gold hops make its first appearance on the channel as part of our on-going SMASH beer series.
This variety was really strange. No distinct fruit or resin qualities. It was really more earthy and "green" tasting. The bitterness was mild and the aroma presence was also pretty mild.
Commercial descriptors listed strawberry in the profile. John thought he could pick some of that out but Mike couldn't find it at all.
Altogether, an interesting hop if you were maybe doing a spiced beer or a spruce beer and wanted a hop that complimented those notes.
Tell us your experience with First Gold Hops.
    CHEERS!

For me it's a typical English hop variety, I use it in English IPA and bitters. I wouldn't say it's "one of the new fantastic hops"... not at all. Down to earth English hop.

... and also, it should be used with typical British hopping rates, if you know what I mean

Hi I am from the UK and use this hop quite a bit. It is well regarded with British brewers as a go to hop for Ales/Bitters and does have a slight orangey finish. Maybe it was not the best of samples you had but even so it is not a intense orange/marmalade flavour but subtle which adds to the british style

Another top video guys, I love your SMaSH beer videos. They've given me the inspiration to source and brew single hop beers, due to your honesty about these hops I don't think I'll bother buying First Gold for a SMaSH beer, but do you think they might work for a Saison? due to their woody and earthy notes?

Yes, I think they would work well there. Also, I am going to look for a fresher pack. - John

Nice one. I think you hit the nail on the head as far as the "freshness" of the hops. Because just last week I was toying with a recipe for Cornish Tin Miner's Ale that called for First Gold and Bramling Cross. An online search showed Northern Brewer was about the only supplier carrying them, and they were STEEPLY discounted (over 75%). Probably tells more of the story than anything. Needless to say, after seeing this and seeing what's available Stateside, I won't be using First Gold any time soon. Cheers!

@Patton Moore Indeed. Especially when considering the flavor and aroma descriptors. Cheers!

Are you sue about the freshness of those hops? As a UK brewer, that was not my perception at all with First Gold. Last time I brewed with FG, I got a very marmaladey orange hit. A bit too marmaladey if I'm honest, but certainly not what you seem to have experienced. Maybe you should have taken up the offer of your UK viewer and good the got stuff shipped over😀. Anyway, I like your vids - keep up the good work guys.

Were these English grown? If so maybe they were old, it certainly sounds like they were. Here in England the hops are fruity with marmelade like flavours and some spice. I've never picked up any tannin flavours or woody earthy flavours. Over here it's a really good all-round bittering and aroma hop.

    • @BrewDudes
      @BrewDudes  2 роки тому

You very much could be right. I have no idea if hops are getting repackaged at some point which exposes them again to air etc etc. This is something, I've brought up many times. I just don't know what quality hops we are getting as homebrewers sometimes. Which is why we do these SMASH beer reviews. It's great when you get the commercial descriptors, but from time to time you're going to get a different experience for unknown reasons. Our videos demonstrate that. CHEERS! -Mike

Harlequin is my favourite of the new British hops it has the orange marmalade and Earl Grey notes over a clear British base.Maybe the yeast selection is part of the problem since these are British hops for British beer not west coast IPA

So, you put a smidge in at 60min and the rest in at flame out and dry hopping. I'm thinking alot more flavour would have come adding as well at 20min and 10 minutes. To me that time is the sweet spot for hop flavours to come out. Cheers Brew on.😎👍

Fantastic, I was just looking for some tomato and marigold Essence for my next brew! Like John said, perhaps this was just an off lot? Maybe harvested just off peak or perhaps staled a bit? Who knows, doesnt sound real pleasing based on your experience. Cheers from Uxbridge!
