- Unveiling Vista Hops: Fruity Hype or Floral Surprise?
Brew Dudes put Vista hops to the test in a SMASH beer!
This episode dives into a Single Malt And Single Hop (SMASH) beer brewed with Vista hops, a new aroma variety. We explore how Vista hops perform at different stages of the brewing process, showcasing their potential for bitterness, flavor, and aroma.
What the brewers expected: Tropical fruits, stone fruits, and floral notes.
What the brewers found: Mostly floral with some generic citrus character. The tropical and stone fruit notes seemed to be missing.
The video explores:
Can Vista hops be paired with a classic English hop for a unique twist?
Did Vista live up to the hype?
Share your Vista hop experiences in the comments below!
Cheers!

I’m totally with you on the commercial vs homebrew market. I’ve felt this way about mosaic hops for years and I always thought it was just me doing something wrong but I’ve tried brewery versions using mosaic that were vastly different than what I’ve done. I feel like a lot of these newer hops anymore is piney, maybe citrus pithy or some of the other more common descriptors with very little of the descriptors that made them so popular to begin with. Good stuff guys! Keep it up. I come back every week 🙂
Thanks! We appreciate your support!
Highly encourage you guys to start a gofundme so we can get you some YVH hops
No Kidding!
I have 2 ounces of that! Bought on a whim. Looking forward to trying.
Brew on!
I’m growing vista at home, excited to brew with them in the fall
We were surprised to find out you could actually get these rhizomes to grow. That means its not a Trademarked or copyrighted hop varietal. Maybe it also means it wasn't really worth trying to protect like a Citra or Galaxy. Cheers! -Mike
Love you guys so much you call it like it is i am not the best beer maker but i would kill to make some the beers you make ,my spirt making is out standing just not beer my favorite new carsle brown ale or bass double diamond and the English Porters you guys make so good i`ll keep trying and keep watching your every week cheers
I appreciate these a ton! I've gone back to these time and again. One suggestion, if I may, it'd be cool to see a scoring system for these, or even a ranking! While I appreciate the qualitative feedback, sometimes I'm lost as to how much you like this hop to others that you've tried. Maybe you could score it on aroma, flavor, and some intangibles?
I have an idea to make a page on our blog that collects all the SMaSH beer videos and posts them to one place. I like the scoring detail - maybe AI can help me with putting the page together - John
First!😁
Love these smash series.
Thanks Curt!
Love these series 🍻
Thanks!
Good content guys thanks
Thanks!
Do you have a "Doin' it for the Dash" T-shirt?
Not yet but that would be an awesome product.
I also wonder how much things change by the time the truck load of stuff gets to you guys over there. I haven't had this hop before but I've had fresh pellets, old pellets and I've had home grown fresh hops, frozen fresh hops, and I've had shipped fresh hops of the same variety and region... and none taste the same...
True - I would think they would be protected in the pouch but who knows.
One gallon!
I love Vista. When they first came out, I thought they were on the fruity side. I wonder if these have changed over the past couple years.
Its an agricultural product and I guess things change. I don't know anything about hop breeding. But I wonder if the characteristics are not stable after a few years of growth. hmmm... CHEERS! -Mike
@BrewDudes Yeah, who knows. Water, heat, elevation? I'm not a hold breeder either, but I've notice varied results with a couple different strains from bag to bag, year to year. Zappa comes to mind.
@@josephkeown9739 Hoo boy - Zappa. That was a disappointing SMaSH beer. - John
I kinda think that if these new hops were actually very desirable, then given the small quantity, they’d all be bought up by the industry and none would make it to homebrewers.
I love this comment. Hadn't thought of it that way. Intriguing. Cheers! -Mike
Thank you for explaining your full process, I'm newish to brewing and want to start some of these 1gal smash beers and wasn't sure on the fermenting time, What are you fermentating in?
John has a one gallon glass jug. If you dig into prior SMASH beer recipes he discusses it some time ago. Cheers! -Mike
Yes the new NB's hop packaging doesn't include alph acid content anymore. Annoying...
I don't know why. Seems important for recipes. - John
You ain’t pretty to look at … but man I love your description and sensory profile my friends ….lol
I ain’t any prettier !!!
Maybe we should just go to radio then??? CHEERS! -Mike
