This motor is bulletproof. My 2010 Civic has almost 400,000 miles on it. And I just drove it from Orlando Florida to North Georgia a few days ago with ease. She's a beast!. Super fun to drive too. With proper maintenance these things can run forever. It's been the most reliable car I've ever had in my life so far.

I'm a Honda tech. I have two 8th gens with r18. Also an 8th gen si and an FK8 type r. The r18 in my opinion is the most reliable 4 banger ever made. Impressive. Got 300+k on one and never once had an engine problem.

Hi. If you know Alot about this engine please help. I have it also but never heard VTEC kicking in. Any idea what what to do? I have automatic transmission. Does it kicks in only in manual?

@@TheLordstrider an r18 isn't meant to feel vtec kick in. Also it is ivtec which is a little different on this engine. It uses variable valve timing for fuel economy, not for sport or performance. You can mod the engine for performance and get up to 400hp if you really wanted to.

@@lightskinkeithsweat2717 you should be fine with the milage, but I wouldn't run too much boost. 15psi would make her scream. The cvt would make me nervous. I don't have any experience with honda cvt's so I don't really know. You can do a swap to a 5 speed. I have an extra one at my shop that needs a new input shaft bearing. Clutch pedal assembly should bolt right in. Center console is the same I think. You'll need a shifter and cables. Also to swap it you'll have to reprogram the computer but you'll be getting a hondata anyway if you boost it. Would be a fun project. I have an 08 ex 5 speed I wanna boost when I get the time. I'm betting I could easily get 500hp out of it.

To people saying you "don't feel VTEC" on an R18 that's not true. But the thing is that it's actually in reverse. Once the engine hits 3000rpm, it goes out of I-VTEC and switches to the regular cams, you instantly feel a switch.

@HotHeadCJ the R18 actually has a lot of similarities to the B and K series motors as far as dimensions and ignition systems are concerned; however, the R series motors were developed with economy and durability as the #1 priority, whereas the B and K series are "performance oriented" motors.
Nevertheless, as with other Honda SOHC motors, R series motors are excellent candidates for TURBOCHARGING!! Full Race and other manufacturers have developed bolt-on turbo kits, and are having much success!

Designed for efficiency. VTEC here (with SOHC) actually has the effect of lowering the power below 3500rpm and then normal afterwards, rather than the typical effect of normal power/high power band. I get stellar mileage for a 1.8L engine on the highway, 45mpg from a 11 year old engine with 140HP.

It works only around 1500-3000 rpm for economy. It says that the traditional VTEC kick will not be heard and felt unlike those in the previous Honda engines. R series is for economy not power. Yes it has vtec but not like the older version where it is set at a certain rpm range at high output. I've done a lot of hard accelerations and flooring it and got curious cause i dont hear the vtec until i did my research. It's good I can get 11 km per liter . Vtec cam in R engine activated between 1 - 3.5K rpm. Other than that, normal high performance cam
During vtec activate, the lifting of an intake valve reduced while timing of another intake valve prolonged. Both to activate Atkinson cycle motor
To activate vtec, need certain conditions for ecu to give feedback.
Basically not all the time that vtec should activate. U need to cruise or give low load for this engine to give you good mileage
Between 3.5K until 5K rpm, the max torque achieved with long intake manifold. at higher than 5.2K rpm, short intake manifold take over to give high hp. But cannot match traditional NA Vtec high rpm power, unless forced induction (i guess)
If you used to push your engine hard, then the ecu will always give you power which is quite fast for an 1.8 NA angine. just install electrical grounding equipment, surely you can feel the R18 power

According to BC, best result that I get 5,3 l/100km (44 mpg) on open roads where speed vary between 60-90 km/h. But on highway, on my usual speed 140 km/h average is 7,5 l/100km (31 mpg).
Worst case is a city drive and short destinations when it is usually between 8 - 9 l (26-30 mpg).
For real consumption add/subtract additionally 10%, that's about how much my BC lies.
I had a chance to drive a Toyota Auris Hybrid, which has 1,8 petrol but with reduced power (100hp) because it works in Atkinson cycle, on open road and highway (where there is no much benefit from electric power) i get average 6 l/100 (39 mpg) which is very nice result, approx 1,5 l less than on 1,8 Civic in same driving regime. I know that it can not be compared this 2 engines directly, but If I understood well, this i-VTEC when is activated it should be close to Atkinson cycle, or I'm wrong?

R18 do not have "i-VTEC." They only have i-VTEC-E, a similar system to the old D-Series engines that had the traditional VTEC-E. It simple terms it allows the engine to run on 12 valves rather than 16 at low loads and low engine speeds. At higher loads and higher revs, (2,200~3,500rpm) the cam switches over to normal mode or 16 valves for more power. There is no high lift cam.
Some people might say they feel or hear a kick around 5,000rpm with these engines, but that is not the "VTEC" kicking in, it's the 2-stage intake manifold that engages for better output and airflow.

Super engine, untill you have a problem like screw snap inside alluminium block like I had during el. starter service. Now I have problems with it. Why do you use only 2 screws for starter, and why do you use short thread step screws so that they easily cement/jam in to alluminium? Because of that now complete engine must go out of car and sent to precision machinery to take this shit out and re-thread hole, it will not be cheap.

This engine is basically a modernised B18. In my old B16 I couldn’t lose one of these cars uphill. And Againt a B18 I was pulling away. Even had a K20 owner as what mods I had done to it, when it was standard. This engine can neatly double the miles on a full tank of a B16 on a long highway journey

Does the 2019 hrv 1.8 ivtec have direct injection? I hope not. And how do the cvt hold up if u baby it and change oil every 30k miles?

It doesnt have direct injection and the CVT will last as long as you keep fluid changed we put loads of miles on our hrv

Just went though this with mine. Been having a issue for the last year and a half with loosing coolant but can’t find where it’s going no smoke not mixing with oil just coolant gets low after a month or 2. Well couple weeks ago I had a head gasket failure just changed the whole engine with a R18A from Japan. Car runs amazing now and hasn’t had any coolant loss thang god 🙏🏻.

With the exact same driving and exact same roads, my 2013 1.8L manual Civic use about 6-7% MORE gas than my previous 2004 1.7L manual Civic... Unfortunately, the R18 engine serie seems to be less efficient in reality than the D17 serie.

Ouais mais en même temps, la Civic de 9e generation est plus grosse et plus lourde que la 7e génération. Le moteur est plus puissant aussi alors ça aide pas toujours à diminuer la consommation.

      @@joelsimard1148the 2013 1.8 (1799ccm) Civic has a R4 Motor and not the R18 i think.🤔

not bad when you factor in the creature comforts and safety features contributing to the extra weight ei higher measurable fuel consumption
