  • The ketogenic diet has surged in popularity over the last few years. According to data from the Food Information Council, 23 million Americans chose to follow a ketogenic diet in 2022, which is more than double the number from just 4 years prior (10 million in 2018). With this surge in popularity, however, comes a surge in criticism along with the adulteration of the original therapeutic principles that inevitably accompany a diet’s commercialization.
It’s time to clear through the confusion and get to what the research is showing us. In this episode of the RWS Clinician’s Corner we are joined by one of the world’s topmost experts in the ketogenic diet: Dr. Dominic D’Agostino.
In this interview, we do a deep dive into what every nutrition professional needs to know about the ketogenic diet:
When this diet is best used clinically; when it’s contraindicated; and how to structure it for best results
What the latest research is telling us about the therapeutic application of this protocol - from metabolic health to neurological considerations and cancer
Exogenous ketones: when and how to use them
The intricacies of macronutrient ratios and when/how to cycle in and out of ketosis
Measurement: the best forms for tracking ketosis and other key biomarkers to monitor
If you’re not familiar with Dr. D’Agostino’s work, you’re in for a real treat. Dr. D’Agostino is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology. He teaches medical neuroscience, medical physiology, nutrition and neuropharmacology. He is also a Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) to assist with their efforts towards optimizing the safety, health and resilience of the warfighter and astronaut. His primary research focuses on developing and testing nutritional and metabolic-based therapies for a variety of disease states and advancing the use of metabolic-based therapies into human clinical applications.

I am not a Doc nor a medical professional. I have been studying ketones for 8 months now. Hardly an expert. I find in my self I can stay above the 15 measure for 100% of my time. Almost always I am at 30 and occasionally up to 40. My NAFLD is reversed and my diabetes as well. My arthritis is gone and my brain fog has cleared. Skin and hair is wonderful. Sleep thru the night without urination. Snoring gone and eyesight is improving. The list is endless. I even no longer have body odor. Dom and his fellow doctors have gotten me to help myself. All of this started because I am trying to help my body fight off my stage 4 cancer.

@jp5419 I have not....but..my NFALD has healed. My AIC is down to 5.7 from 7.5. Almost out of pre-diabetes. My tumors are "stable". Growing ever ever so slightly now. Part of this may be my treatment schedule went from every 3 week to 4 because I was doing better. I got worse. Now going back to 3. That and keeping my carbs low, I hope to see improvement in the next scan. I had 30+ years of bad eating , and it seems like it is rational for my "system " to make adjustments

Are there any ongoing clinical studies of keto for autoimmunity?

I’ve done searches & can’t find any Nutritional Keto Clinicians within 500 miles of my home. I’m wanting to treat my MDD with Keto as all the medications I’ve tried quit working or had bad side effects. What are people in rural areas in the USA supposed to do? Just try to do it on our own? My family physician and mental health providers do not support Keto. The nutritionist at our local hosp basically insinuated that Nutritional Keto is malpractice. ☹️

I wish you luck. It's especially difficult if you are utilizing your ketones They're not really registering so it's really hard If you've been established and your fat adopted to get an accurate reading on your ketones. I think there's an association of doctors somewhere but I don't know where that handle ketogenic diets maybe another thread would be able to help you better.

I've been hospitalized via ambulance three times from uncontrollable high blood pressure. On three medications it was still spiking.
I went carnivore for bone health and was off two of my the BP meds in a couple months and I'm down to 1/4 dose on the third. Any fruit or honey for me though throws everything off... Because it's metabolized by the liver the same organ that produces ketones and it's a processed as fructose.

@denisedecker7330 interesting. Can you please tell me after how much time it happened? Maybe I didn't wait enough... as I said, for me it's the opposite. Fruits lower blood pressure!
