Buzz lightyear has been my favorite character since before I could remember. My mom tells me the story everytime how when I was like 2, how my grandpa walked back into Disneyland, all the way to the very first merch stand I saw when we went there as a family and got me my Buzz Lightyear plushie that I still have to this day 22 years later. I had pajamas, bought collectibles, loved the cartoon show, hell I nearly got a Star Command tattoo a few weeks ago because I love the character, and Tim Allen is one of my all time favorites because he is the voice of Buzz Lightyear. That said, I did not see this movie in theaters and still have not seen it. And it’s not because it was “woke” or had a quick lesbian kiss. Hell, if I can perve out for a second, having two hot space ranger chicks sharing a passionate kiss may have actually gotten more people to show up to see it. Let’s be real here. Anyway, I haven’t seen the movie because it just looked BORING. I know it’s been said before, but it needs repeating, this was supposed to be “The movie that made Andy LOVE Buzz Lightyear.” And let me tell you, as someone who grew up the youngest of 3 with two older brothers and became the oldest of 3 with two younger step brothers who were super into sci-fi, comic books, video games, and all things geek culture, let me say with total and all confidence that NO FIVE YEAR OLD BOY (Andy’s age in the first Toy Story) WOULD SEE THIS INTERSTELLAR KNOCK OFF AND WANT A BUZZ LIGHTYEAR. What should’ve been Pixar’s Guardians of the Galaxy or Galaxy Quest, was just trash. Lesbians have nothing to do with why they missed the mark so much.

If they keep claiming this "anti-gay" sentiment as a the reason for the failures... it must be pretty huge to affect a Hollywood movie, right? Much less multiple projects. Can Disney show us examples of this world-wide sentiment? I'd love to see all the comments and proof of these claims. Anywhere.
The thing is Disney made a Buzz Lightyear show years ago....AND IT WAS AWESOME! So I have no clue how they failed to do the character justice, aside from the obvious of course.
I went and saw it and didn't even notice the kiss, my main issue was that it wasn't cute (except for the cat). You recapped it nicely that it just wasn't FUN.
What Disney did to John Boyega is the biggest hypocrisy move of all time. Saying you're about inclusivity, then Where's Finn on most marketing over seas.
And then said "Of course, the _toxic audience_ hated Finn," when we were the ones yelling "Why are you doing him dirty? He's the only interesting character!"
@rogerborg So true. I was thinking this character is going to be cooler than Lando! That hug toward the end of 7, I was like, they make such a cute couple. It's gonna be the best love story...Wow was I gullible...Dooped at every turn.
They should’ve just done what they did with Buzz in the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command TV show. That show was fun, lively, colorful and had characters with actual personality. This movie was muted, dull, and the characters are so bland I can’t even remember those tag-along Space Ranger characters’ names
They're both movies that surprisingly deal with a lot of the same broad plot points, But are executed so different that you're left questioning how many kids would want toys of one of these, and how there weren't more toys of the other.
Regardless of what the text at the beginning of the film says, the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series is what Andy watched as a kid that made him want the Buzz toy, and the Lightyear movie is the dark and gritty live-action reboot that comes out when he’s an adult.
As a life long Toy Story fan I said hell no to this movie as soon as I found out Tim Allen wasn’t in it. Chris Evans is great and all but he’s not Buzz. Since I didn’t watch it I hadn’t seen the kiss and I think I heard about the kiss once and never again until Disney decided that’s why the movie failed. They’re absolutely insane.
I don't understand how CGI movies continue to justify inflated budgets. I really don't. You see equal quality cutscenes in videogames that were made for a fraction of the game's overall budget that can rival that length. They should be getting cheaper as the tech is easier and easier to use and the hardware cheaper and cheaper, not more expensive.
The incompetent directors will add new expensive top of the line tech instead of telling a good story. Good story requires talent, new technical stuff just money. (There is talent in creating the tech but not in buying it)
I was looking forward to lightyear as an adult - but I pretty much decided not to pay money to see it when i found out that Tim Allen wasn't voicing him. Disney made a huge deal out of there being a kiss or something in the movie - but, it was a blink and you miss it happening thing. Lightyear failed, because the fans wanted one thing and Disney phoned in something else.
I grew up with Toy Story and was really excited when they announced this movie. But Lightyear was so BORING!!! It's just a really bad movie. The kiss was probably the smallest problem with it.
Rule of thumb is to add 50% of the production budget in marketing, and the studio gets half the theatre tickets, so a movie needs to gross *3x* its production budget just to break even. And then factor in that Disney habitually under-reports budgets, until they claim tax relief, then the real number comes out.
I actually for got the kiss existed because I was focusing on the plot, which was a no no. Plus, it’s clear that they’re taking the easy way out because they’re just making a quick answer and not reasons why
When I saw the trailer for this movie I knew I wasn't going to see it. It has nothing to do with the Toy Story franchise. Disney made Buzz as if he was real instead of keeping him a toy. That is what made Toy Story so magical.
Consider the other side of the story. Investors took a beating from “Lightyear” but the cash flow it generated allowed Disney executives to pay themselves fabulous salaries.
Everytime I've noticed them make a big deal out of having progressive characters....it was to distract from the fact it was a boring and poorly written movie. I mean, it's not like having gay characters or gay kissing is a new thing. Been there for over a decade.
The story in this movie made absolutely no fucking sense. It was a disaster of a write. I blame the head director who cares more about his Lego ideas than good writing.
Disney started making movies around plot devices rather than using plot devices to progress the story. When you do that the story is lost and meaningless.
It fails at being a movie because of the basics: it's not a compelling story. Has uninteresting characters. Dull pacing. It's not even visually interesting. And they betrayed everything that made the first Toy Story great.
Here are all the main male characters in Inside Out 2; Riley's dad, Anger, Fear, Ennui. Practically the entire cast is female. The film is currently the 8th best selling film of all time. And it's great. This is the thing. They just made a good film. They didn't make it about women, for women, by women. It made sense to have almost all women, they did that, and it's good. That's how it should be. If you're having to shout about it and wave a flag, you're kinda missing the point.

This movie simply was NOT the 90’s sci fi adventure movie Andy would have seen to make him love Buzz Lightyear. That is what it was supposed to be. And it was nothing like a 90’s sci fi adventure movie.
It's mis-judgement on the character and it's total non-necessity reminded me of the Solo movie. The audiences aren't stupid but time and time again the Hollywood system keeps hoping they are and slap this slop in our direction before we've had enough time to book in the lobotomy needed to actually enjoy it.
Regardless of what the text at the beginning of the film says, the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series is what Andy watched as a kid that made him want the Buzz toy, and the Lightyear movie is the dark and gritty live-action reboot that comes out when he’s an adult.
They have the blueprints on how to make a ToyStory movie. Not only do they have the blueprints but all of the receipts. Yet they fail on making a franchise movie. It's just sad. It's like watching a kid inherit a billion dollar company from his dad and driving it into the dirt after 10 years.
I would not be surprised if the psychology of Disney’s failure is very similar to the psychology of the entitled offspring that squanders away their family’s wealth because they take it for granted.
Anyone else grow up watching the animated Buzz Lightyear show? Kinda sad they didn’t just make a film with those characters and world building. Half the work was done already.
In a world where famous, best-selling books get heavy changes when turned into movies because the people making the movie want to put their mark on it, there's no way a somewhat obscure TV show was going to get a faithful film adaptation. No matter how good it was.
Regardless of what the text at the beginning of the film says, the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series is what Andy watched as a kid that made him want the Buzz toy, and the Lightyear movie is the dark and gritty live-action reboot that comes out when he’s an adult.
Lightyear flopped because no one asked for a Buzz Lightyear spinoff much less one without Tim Allen that being said the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command TV show with Patrick Warburton voicing Buzz was a ton of fun back in the day.
Regardless of what the text at the beginning of the film says, the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series is what Andy watched as a kid that made him want the Buzz toy, and the Lightyear movie is the dark and gritty live-action reboot that comes out when he’s an adult.
It wasn't Disney that came out and said that Lightyear failed because of the gay themes. It was former Pixar employees that came out to IGN and talked about the higher ups that made sure there were no gay themes at all in Inside Out 2. So that has people jumping to the conclusion that Disney must have recognized that the gay themes in Lightyear and Strangeworld didn't do those movies any favors, besides being bad films
Oh, gay kiss.. and here I was thinking it failed because it was just utter garbage, silly me. So, they're saying that regardless of what joyless nonsensical character assassinating slop it was, it would have been successful without that one kiss? Then.. why did they add it?
They're flailing about, trying to find something other than the fact that they made ANOTHER terrible movie, to excuse what THEY did. Go blame someone else, and they'll find another excuse, without fixing a thing.... Kind of like Ford has been doing for so long that they now have to sell out to Tesla...

It’s simple just have Disney like how it was back in the old days where it’s nothing but just great writing and entertainment while having no politics in the movie whatsoever.
I really wanted to see a movie about him. To learn why he was s obeloved. And then you get to see that... that thing. Why would Andy like that? It was terrible. The plot was weak and the ... it was so flat and boring.
It's funny that's what they said but for me I watched it with my son and I didn't care about the lesbian kiss, but I did care about it as they were promoted as the movie "The action figure" was based on, that Andy went to see in theaters. And honestly in that sense they epically failed.

It's hilarious because Lightyear's target audience is children, which means the film SHOULD have scored huge in the box office. The fact that it did not means most parents didn't take their kids to see it, not because the parents told their kids no, but because the kids weren't interested. I've never seen or heard a kid talk about the Lightyear movie, they literally don't seem to care. BESIDES, we got an AWESOME Buzz movie starring Tim Allen about 2 decades ago, and it was a BANGER!

I don't remember any publicity or reviews about lightyear, much less any discussion of the lesbian couple shown in like, 2 5 second scenes. I'd forgotten it existed. i would suggest the only reason they're saying anything about it now is to remind people it existed for when they do... something else related. No idea what, but something related, soon.
Insightful and well-said. Movies that have done well cater to the masses and use a good story and likable characters. Guilt tripping and pushing an agenda that divides the audience shows how lost Disney is. I remember looking forward to the next Disney flick. Now I just cringe.
Disney blaming has become predictable and laughable. Plus it didnt help Lightyear that it copied an 60s scifi film, Beyond the Time Barrier. Same plot ideas but add Buzz to it.
Thanks for stating truth about doing terrible movies and series and then blaming it on audience's racial and sexaulity taste. When there is no talent anything will become an excuse, maybe the high ranks and investors do believe that bullshit or are just fine with it. Also, ok content is getting worse and worse becuase of lack of talent and agenda but....Where do they film these things, in Venezuela or NorthKorea?? Lightyear was boring and unfunny
Just like the lawyers, executives and DEI hires who made it.
You want a better Buzz Lightyear spin-off? Just go watch Buzz Lightyear of Star Command TV movie and it's following animated series.
@@rachelknightonline thx... This is exactly what my gf said when we talked about that. U have missed nothing. The movie Was just time waste. 3 friends of mine and my gf watched that crap with me 3 nerds and a Fangirl since the Figure of Lightyear Was available to buy. Nobody knows who is making this big Budget crap and expected the Fans would love this Thing. Its said, that every franchise Turns into nothingness. There is no Ambition to Do something great anymore. How the hell could this movie flop? I know nobody that Not like buzz. Everybody loves or like him... Same as Star wars kinobi.
Regardless of what the text at the beginning of the film says, the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series is what Andy watched as a kid that made him want the Buzz toy, and the Lightyear movie is the dark and gritty live-action reboot that comes out when he’s an adult.
Lightyear’s failure was actually more basic! It basically sucked!
But Lightyear sucking is actually gay, isn't it? So is that a self-fulfilling prophesy?
What Disney did to John Boyega is the biggest hypocrisy move of all time. Saying you're about inclusivity, then Where's Finn on most marketing over seas.
And then said "Of course, the _toxic audience_ hated Finn," when we were the ones yelling "Why are you doing him dirty? He's the only interesting character!"
@rogerborg So true. I was thinking this character is going to be cooler than Lando! That hug toward the end of 7, I was like, they make such a cute couple. It's gonna be the best love story...Wow was I gullible...Dooped at every turn.
Same with Chadwick Bosman in Black Panther
@@YabbaDabbaDoo2U2 yup. What's your thoughts on that....
Oh, you mean Izzy, Mo and Darby.

Or maybe the movie was just bad
I don't understand how CGI movies continue to justify inflated budgets. I really don't. You see equal quality cutscenes in videogames that were made for a fraction of the game's overall budget that can rival that length. They should be getting cheaper as the tech is easier and easier to use and the hardware cheaper and cheaper, not more expensive.
The incompetent directors will add new expensive top of the line tech instead of telling a good story.
Good story requires talent, new technical stuff just money. (There is talent in creating the tech but not in buying it)
That runway walk though! You're so beautiful! 😘😍🥰🖤🤍💙
I know she dang gorgeous ❤
Loving your videos since I've subscribed! Thanks!
I passed it over for my daughters specifically because of that moment.
Rule of thumb is to add 50% of the production budget in marketing, and the studio gets half the theatre tickets, so a movie needs to gross *3x* its production budget just to break even.
And then factor in that Disney habitually under-reports budgets, until they claim tax relief, then the real number comes out.
Hell yeah Jay! Stand on business!
That Buzz Lightyear doll was taller than you Snarky! 😮
Consider the other side of the story. Investors took a beating from “Lightyear” but the cash flow it generated allowed Disney executives to pay themselves fabulous salaries.
didn’t expect a lightyear video today but here we are
Everytime I've noticed them make a big deal out of having progressive characters....it was to distract from the fact it was a boring and poorly written movie. I mean, it's not like having gay characters or gay kissing is a new thing. Been there for over a decade.
I can't think of a single movie that wasn't specifically about gay people that was improved by including gay kissing.
The story in this movie made absolutely no fucking sense. It was a disaster of a write. I blame the head director who cares more about his Lego ideas than good writing.
Disney has got their Gaslighting A-game!!!
I can’t believe “un-gay” is now a term 🙄
Disney's forgotten that having a compelling storyline is actually important to a movie.
Disney started making movies around plot devices rather than using plot devices to progress the story. When you do that the story is lost and meaningless.
Buzz saying "I'm miss Nezbit!" then laughing is how Disney's Execs are today
Zorg... You are NOT the father !!!
The whole concept for this movie, doing "the movie that inspired the toy" was an horrendous, terrible idea that literally nobody wanted.
Regardless of what the text at the beginning of the film says, in my headcanon, the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series is what Andy watched as a kid that made him want the Buzz toy, and the Lightyear movie is the dark and gritty live-action reboot that comes out when he’s an adult.
Idk it was a little like the Lost in Space movie.
Which also did badly because it was also boring. @@lloydharris8766

Lightyear flopped because no one asked for a Buzz Lightyear spinoff much less one without Tim Allen that being said the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command TV show with Patrick Warburton voicing Buzz was a ton of fun back in the day.
If they had updated that pilot into movie format, we'd be having a whole different conversation😮💨

It's a shame too cause the visuals for that film, just like the Rey Palpatine trilogy, are incredible.
Oh, gay kiss.. and here I was thinking it failed because it was just utter garbage, silly me. So, they're saying that regardless of what joyless nonsensical character assassinating slop it was, it would have been successful without that one kiss? Then.. why did they add it?
yep you're 100% right a 2 second kiss means nothing when compared to the other 90 mins. I was more upset with the comic relief sidekicks.
They're flailing about, trying to find something other than the fact that they made ANOTHER terrible movie, to excuse what THEY did. Go blame someone else, and they'll find another excuse, without fixing a thing.... Kind of like Ford has been doing for so long that they now have to sell out to Tesla...
Me: “Mirror Mirror🪞 on the wall , I would like to experience a classic Disney film without worrying about Palestine 🇵🇸 or Israel 🇮🇱 or any political or racial or gender divisive issue. I just want to be entertained & maybe relive some childhood joy. PERIOD. FULL STOP 🛑!”
Mirror: “Sorry, the Disney elevator 🛗 doesn’t stop on that floor anymore”
Me: “Wierd, Wierd”. “I guess I have to spend my entertainment dollars somewhere else! When does “Dune Messiah” come to movie 🎥 theatres?”
It’s simple just have Disney like how it was back in the old days where it’s nothing but just great writing and entertainment while having no politics in the movie whatsoever.
You are correct
I wasn’t aware of that kiss
I watch it and was disappointed
Lousy story
When I saw the trailer I cried over nostalgia . Then the film came out and I never finished it.
Good points. Especially about the hypocrisy of editing scenes to avoid being banned in other countries.
Dude, I’m still so sad they didn’t do anything with Fin Jedi-wise. I was so excited when he picked up Luke’s lightsaber at the end 🥲
I have studdied marketing. but I must have missed that part. that say insult the custumers to make them buy your product. that will convines them that your product isn´t bad.
Hey let’s make a Disney movie to cater 7% of the population and piss off the rest.
Ok first of all, You’re absolutely giving off 80’s vibe with the outfit and hair and that’s just awesome!! 🧡
Secondly, how in the name of Zurg’s shiny horns did they bugger up a Toy Story character??!!??
The Animated series of Buzz Lightyear is much better than this movie thats for sure, also ive Totally agree with you Jay Toy Story 1 n 2 are the best Movies of the series!
Regardless of what the text at the beginning of the film says, the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series is what Andy watched as a kid that made him want the Buzz toy, and the Lightyear movie is the dark and gritty live-action reboot that comes out when he’s an adult.
You want to know what Disney should have done? They had an amazing blue print in the buzz lightyear tv show. I loved that tv show! And would’ve watched the hell out of it if they would’ve brought those characters back in a movie.
Regardless of what the text at the beginning of the film says, in my headcanon, the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series is what Andy watched as a kid that made him want the Buzz toy, and the Lightyear movie is the dark and gritty live-action reboot that comes out when he’s an adult.
The scene was a blink and you'll miss it moment the movie failed because it just wasn't great
Damned good analysis.
Exactly, they are just posturing to get you to like them. Im just waiting till we get to welcome to Disney I love you lvls.
If it was true, then they should give the people what they want. Not tell them what they should want
Thank you! They took a script for a depressing drama that had nothing to do with the character, then decided to cheap out and say it was the story of Buzz. No child Andy's age would call it a good movie, let alone their favorite.
2-3 times a month?!?! What?!
The twist with the older Buzz reminded me of The Lost In Space film.
great video as always -your in a league of your own and I’m always down to watch everyday you do an amazing job and that’s just the daily updates not to mention the incredible cosplay side of things they are always incredible and your talent is certainly on display in all those incredible projects I can’t wait to see what’s next cheers 😊
It woulda been cool if there was more to the story, I liked the whole vibe of him tryna fix shit but it really never ramped up visuals were good tho!
Your videos are fantastic. Absolutely adore you Jay.
Its stupid crazy the way budgets keep rocketing, only in a sinking countrie´s economy could the steep increments of sequels of cartoons, or any other content for that matter, could be explained. Seriously, money involved is that of ancient royal courts, its outrageous! All for content that is becoming more boring and more stupid on top.
If I had a dollar for everytime I drolled over the walk up intro Elon musk would be sweating
Simpin ain't easy

LOL, first love Buzz Lightyear. I now know why my grown niece was so happy to meet him at Disney Land.
What made the movie fail was it being extremely boring.
Okay, nice outfit, but now I want to see a traditional set of overalls. I also liked the fancy dress a few episodes ago. I also appreciate your reviews, and the no makeup is not an issue.
I've thrown my Disney s*** away.
Jay, what do you think of Sucker Punch? Could you do a mini-review? Looking good as always btw🔥
True the story and characters were bad but the gay thing still made a big difference. Also, rotten tomato’s removed most revues that mentioned the gay thing in a negative review which made the score higher than it should have been.
Should’ve based it off of the animated buzz lightyear show

Good point - well made.
I had no interest in seeing Light-year and heard nothing about a Lesbian kiss.
This is news to me.
They may have done much to "un-gay" Inside Out 2, but I note that this film regarding female adolescence contained not a hint of heterosexuality. She's 13 and not for one moment did Riley have a thought about a boy?
I recall there was a buzzlighyear tv series, The story didn't even measure up for an episode of it
Jay, you are wise beyond your years. Your parents must be really pround of you. You're in my Top 5 UA-camrs. Also, you're hilarious.
Wow, almost 12k views in 3hrs. Im glad the channel is growing
It flopped because the idea of Buzz being a real person was stupid and his human design was horrendous
Watched Lightyear at the theater with my two sons. They didn’t give a crap about that kiss, or the fact that it was a LGBT subplot. They were interested in buzz’s story, and at the end they thought the movie was Meh… Personally, I hated Taika Watitit’s character. The robot cat was the best part of the movie.
The bigots excuse is eye rolling. It’s defensive instead of taking on criticisms of the poor story writing. I was bored out of my skull when I watched Lightyear
