  • Frank Rains of Chattanooga can repeat whatever anyone says almost simultaneously. A linguist, Miss Christiansen, appears and speaks in several foreign languages, which he also can repeat. Carol Burnett substitutes for Betsy Palmer.

There's another one of these with a young woman who speaks each English word backwards. They had a translator who speaks Finnish translate the questions into Finish, but the woman, who understood the questions just fine, was answering in the backwards talk.

Frank Rains was real and he was AMAZING. He of course is not speaking 'simultaneously' but the ear blends the sounds for us so that the tiny gap (which can be found on sophisticated recording equipment) vanishes. He was a popular act in the Army during the Korean War in Special Services and an all around great guy.

The sound strikes our ears as being bigger and louder than just two people talking. Our brains are processing two very similar sounds that are milliseconds out of phase. This is the same technique applied to mono recordings to give them an artificial impression of stereo. In a concert hall, the reflections off the walls, which arrive milliseconds after the direct sound, also greatly alters the quality of the sound.

This is totally normal to me. I'm a simultaneous interpreter and I can do this between two languages. There might be a slightly longer lag when interpreting into another language, but sometimes I can almost get ahead of the person because of anticipation and context. Just shadowing the language ends up being exactly like he did. I was shocked to see many people can't do this in just one language.

Ms. "Christensen" was actually German, but in the post-war 50s, they were ashamed to admit it, so they would make themselves pass for other nationalities that had similar aaccets in English and were indistinguishable to the American ear, such as Danish or Swedish, Swiss or Dutch, who were neutral or allied during WWII. Speaking multiple languages was another way to blur out their identity. Many tried to be chameleons. It is a mark to this day.

If you're implying that he's a fake - well, that's your opinion -- and you'd be wrong.
