Speaking as a (female) former trombonist this is absolutely hilarious and the wonderful Arlene does it all in great spirit!!! A truly great lady and well done her for giving it a go but not being afraid to laugh at herself....just goes to prove that us trombonists know how to crack a joke ;-)
And as the mom of a high school band trombonist (First Chair x4 years!) I was so proud to see Arlene do a great job with probably very little training at that point. And to have another female trombonist (maybe professional?) comment nicely topped it off!
Low brass people are screwy -- which is why, as a string bassist, I fit in so well with the tuba section (although I learned to play french horn as a senior, I started out as a string player [first violin, then cello]). But you can't beat band people for having the most fun!
Miss Frances was one of the great ladies of Television. A wonderful beauty of with great class, charm and wit. I have seen her on so many different “What’s My Line” programs on UA-cam. And this trombone proves it! She was the hold in the Golden Age!
That was delightful. I laughed until the tears streamed down my face at the musical ending. A wonderful effort from Arlene and what a good sport she was
I think this is Arlene at her most adorable ever!! I keep coming back to it and cracking up like it's the first time I ever watched it. She is simply delightful. ❤️😊
This was ingenious televison in its simplicity. Arlene Francis always connected so well with her audience, because she did so with the guests. The woman beams a beautiful smile at everyone she talks to...
Hi Jay, No, I saw Arlene on I've Got a Secret. She played trombone for us while on that show. It was a very happy coincidence to encounter this show just minutes later. She was good. I miss her.
She was one of the best.......amusing, attractive, intelligent, well dressed, classy, talented and funny..... too bad todays ''celebrities'' don't have the same attributes......
This is amazing. As a lover of jazz I was so happy to hear Arlene played trombone on WML. So great to see her charm the ass off everyone with her well-humored playing. Love this.
As a long time fan of What's My Line, I learned to enjoy and like Arlene Francis. Then after watching the episode with her trombone teacher, I discovered this I've Got A Secret video where she actually performed after only two months of lessons. Because I am a former professional musician, I laughed very hard. This reminded me of when my dad tried to learn the trombone by practicing at home without taking any lessons. I admire how Arlene was able to laugh at herself. Thank you Arlene. We need more classy ladies like you on television.
I came back again and I laughed just as hard as when I first saw this video. I would have loved to have seen her in that play that she was rehearsing for.
Arlene was hilarious. Her trombone instructor had appeared on What's My Line about this same time as a mystery guest and stumped the panel (including Arlene!)
(Despite that horrible "coat" - which probably cost a fortune!) - Arlene Francis was totally charming and funny playing that trombone! i love the way she laughed at herself and the end of the song was totally hilarious!!!! :} :)
Wasn't a coat...evening gown and cover-up. Very high fashion and expensive for the day. I owned my own businesses for 45 years. I remember watching What's my line and I've Got ASecret in 50's and 60's...she was always lovely and very well dressed.
Actually I was about 3 years old in 65. I Arlene Francis was one of my favorite on the game shows in the 70s but obviously I had no access to the earlier things and it’s a full grown old adult I just think she’s the most fantastic thing ever. So much class.
Usually I don't find this show as funny as What's My Line, but the way the panel introduced themselves hit a particular vein of dry humor in me and it was hilarious.
I randomly saw this clip with Arlene playing trombone once a few years ago, and that spiraled into the delightful discovery of What’s My Line, and I am totally addicted to watching the old episodes now on UA-cam. What a GEM!
What's amazing is that her self depreciating humor does not make one pity her even the slightest bit. It shows how hilarious she was. This looks like something you would see Lucille Ball do🤣
Bess Myerson (July 16, 1924 - December 14, 2014) was an American politician, model and television actress who became famous in 1945 as the first Jewish Miss America, the only person of that faith to ever win the title. Her achievement, in the aftermath of the Holocaust, was seen as an affirmation of the Jewish place in American life. She was a hero to the Jewish community, where "she was the most famous pretty girl since Queen Esther.
I've only known Betsy Palmer as Pamela Voorhees, so it came as a bit of a shock to see her on here with a bubbly sense of humour. And Arlene is a delight as always.
You wouldn't be able to run this segment these days because the boys would all just answer "I took out a loan" to the question "how are you paying for school".
Steve Allen said after the 4 college students that if the audience had a child that wasn’t sure of ‘his’ future that ‘he’ should be certain to watch a certain program coming on tv. We’ve come a long way baby!

I just now saw this post. I just requested to join this group on Facebook. I subscribe to the WML group because I just love that show. I only remember the animated introduction of the program from when I was a young boy. I suppose my folks watched it. I so enjoy the camaraderie of the panelists. My favorite on there is Arlene Francis. Now that I have a new computer, I can watch more of these shows without the problems I had on my old one. I look forward to many more viewings. :)
Actually, Jack Benny was a very good violinist -- he just pretended to be lousy at it for the comic effect. He started out in Vaudeville as just a violinist, but soon found out that comedy was in more demand than music. He evolved into just a comedian, and used the violin as a comical prop.
Arlene is one of the greatest television personalities of all time! She is always a joy to watch.
I had never heard of Arlene Francis until recently. I can’t get enough of her. What a gem! So much class wrapped up in the one human being!
I can say I’m in the exact same situation. I discovered “What’s My Line?” And “I got a Secret” this weekend and I’m obsessed with her.
Too classy to even glance at the actual trombonist
Agreed!!
Arlene was also an occasional guest panelist on MATCH GAME in the '70's. You can watch them here. There are dozens of them here.
@@marcospena4653 Marcos- "I watch her on 'what my line."
Arlene Francis is such a good sport! Besides being classy, she doesn't mind a little self depreciation which takes humility!
HappyComfort I was going to comment, but I noticed you said it just right!
Right on ! She was a class act all the way !
“Self-deprecation.” Common, all-too-common, mistake.
Which made it so much better!!
@@RobJazzful --- first time I have encountered that mistake...

The idea that women don't play trombone is just ridiculous.
@@impCaesarAvg Just ask Gunhild Carling.
@@snickpickle "Low brass people are screwy" - I represent that remark! 😉 I played the baritone horn in band at school.
Always loved Steve Allen. Maybe the wittiest celebrity that I've ever seen. A great musical talent as well.
Arlene Francis is one those rare tv personalities that once you watch her you become a huge fan!!
Miss Frances was one of the great ladies of Television. A wonderful beauty of with great class, charm and wit. I have seen her on so many different “What’s My Line” programs on UA-cam. And this trombone proves it! She was the hold in the Golden Age!
Just as all have shared, I too love Arlene francis and always find her delightful
That was delightful. I laughed until the tears streamed down my face at the musical ending. A wonderful effort from Arlene and what a good sport she was
Arlene is just a delight!
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe !!
What a trouper, what a sport, what a DARLING!!! Arlene Francis. Lovely, lovely person.

Got to love Arlene! Beautiful soul! Her ability to laugh at herself is inspiring and endearing, and her laughter is contagious. Delightful!!!
OMG this is hilarious & absolutely delightful of Arlene playing trombone! 😃 👏
This just gets better & better with Arlene....what a hoot.........
This and ‘what’s my line?’ Are so simple yet so entertaining. It’s a shame shows like this died out
What a good sport Arlene was in this episode. So delightful and classy in every way.

Standards were higher. Now there are no standards.
Agree.
I only came here for Arlene Francis, the show however is a weird format. Back to WML
I love this show! I wish it was still on but all these great stars are gone. Wouldn’t be the same.
Same here I accessed it because I saw Arlene.
haha back to wml, indeed! this was hilarious though!
Let’s get outta here! WML for life
May they all Rest In Peace...all of them were "Big Time" when I was a kid and I watched them all on TV...**sigh**...
Starrman69 don’t worry, the next life still has them
Best episode ever, love Arlene with the professional trombonist.
• Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Love me some Arlene. I wish she was a mystery guest on What's My Line. This is the closest we'll get to that.
She has a sweetness that truly seems to come from within. It must have been a real honor to know her!
She was sweet, incredibly smart and a little naughty. :) All of that made her great
I think Dorothy was once the mystery guest.
One of the absolute classiest ladies and all of television what a wonderful episode of her playing the trombone!!!!
a whole new appreciation for trombonists.
It's great that there was a live band in this show. Most of the time you didn't notice them but for segments like this...priceless.
What a great sport Arlene was...so much fun!
This is amazing. As a lover of jazz I was so happy to hear Arlene played trombone on WML. So great to see her charm the ass off everyone with her well-humored playing. Love this.

What an AMAZING spirit she was! I feel like I was born a lifetime too late!
I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at any YT video, and poor Arlene, cracking herself up!
Arlene really tried such good fun!
Such class and dignity that we’ll never see again :(

I have tears from laughing at her try and play Night and Day......
that was more entertaining than it would have been if she was good at it
One year later......me too!!! That was hilarious. What a sport. And Steve capped it off. Delicious!
22:28 everyone starts NOT knowing how to play. Good job Arlene.
I've never laughed so hard at someone playing the trombone in my life. Arlene was hysterical!
Arlene did really well with such a short time learning the trombone. Wish I could have seen her in a play.
This is a cross-over with What's My Line. They had her jazz trombone teacher on WML.. Arlene is usually pretty funny. I loved this.
I'm never gonna be too anxious to take part in a jam session ever again after seeing this.

LOL!!!! I HAVEN'T LAUGHED THAT HARD IN A WHILE!! 😂😬😃😆😭
Arlene is such a good sport. That was very funny.
The trombone is just the right instrument for Arlene. Imagine her to play flute or harp - that would have been boring.
I was 5 when this was on air originally. I miss those days!
She had a lot of class. Also, she did a good job with that trombone. It is not easy to do with little experience.
Yes indeed ! She was one classy lady ! Smart, funny, lovely, talented, etc etc etc !

she could have done a duet with Jack Benny on violin

Arlene is truely a remarkable Lady 💖💯
Hard to maintain your embouchure when you are laughing. What a good sport! 😅
Well, she was a good sport about it!
Arlene was not as bad on the trombone as she could have been.
