It was actually a full size bean. That part was filler as you can see after Krillin throws it the bean looks normal size and in Kai and manga it's normal size and Krillin does not say this

I love how Krillin was so frustrated and salty with Vegeta all throughout the Freeza/Android/Cell sagas but in Buu saga he finally considers Vegeta one of them and is genuinely moved when Vegeta sacrifices himself for them. And in Super he pokes fun at him within earshot “He hasn’t been bad for awhile now!” and even smiles at Vegeta’s discomfort with Bulma’s attentions and doesn’t bat an eyelash at all anymore when Vegeta raises his voice. It’s beautiful 😂

It could also be the case that only those with superhuman strength can eat it. Which could be why when the characters are shown to be eating it, it sounds like they're biting into a hard shell. Their strength could be the reason they're able to carry and toss it around with ease.

There’s nothing in the source material (as far as I’m aware) that says or even implies anything at all about the hardness, texture, taste, or anything really of Senzu beans. They could have just as easily been capsules made by Capsule Corp and it would change nothing of relevance lore-wise. I’m pretty sure they were just a way for Toriyama to artificially extend fights and resolve the after effects of them, and he gave them to Korin so there would be literally any reason for him to still exist.
Believe it or not, when senzu beans were first introduced, they didn't heal you at all, they were just incredibly filling to eat. Toriyama was in a bit of a bad spot once he changed things around by all of a sudden giving them healing powers towards the end of Dragon Ball, because Korin had several thousand of them. At the martial arts tournament at the end of Dragon Ball, I think I recall he gave Yamcha, Tien, Krillin, and Chaotzu one bag each...
I always wondered, instead of training and using the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, wouldn't it have been quicker for the saiyans to just blast each other to near-death and have Dende heal them over and over? Ya know, just zenkai boost after zenkai boost until it no longer has an effect?
They're fighters it's no fun in that for them they've based training around that before (ie goku blasting himself with his own kamehameha) but I'd be out of character for them to spam zenkai boost though I agree lol it's just not consistent with they're love for fighting and wanting more challenges
