The Cowsills was an under-appreciated group that was much better than the material they sang. Properly managed, they would have been bigger and lasted longer than they did. Captain - check out Bill's bands from his time in Vancouver. Blue Northern was his late 70s and early 80s band. Amazing live but their recordings were a bit of a letdown because they were stifled by their idiot label and they weren't able to make the recordings like they wanted to and, that they knew would be the best way to get their songs down the way they were meant to be. His greatest post-Cowsills band was Blue Northern though. Bill found his perfect co-conspirator Jeffrey Hatcher. They were an outstanding tandem and they assembled a fucking fantastic band that was super tight but they were just the perfect kind of loose and boozy with a phenomenal swinging element. Hatcher and Cowsill were touted as an Everly Brothers level vocal tandem (100% true) and, they produced the two excellent Blue Northern albums. They were under promoted though. Even with their live shows getting rave reviews and crazy rabid sold out hard partying gigs. Bill might have been partying too hard himself but once he and Hatcher got locked in...it was magic. I'll leave it up to you to enjoy the experience of seeking out the Blue Northern videos on UA-cam but, I am going to try to post a link to a really low quality VHS recording of an industry conference in Southern California that is championed by many but, doesn't exist in any better quality where Bill and Jeffrey melt all the attendees faces off doing a little bit of their sweet harmonizing. This song has always made me smile. Since 1967, I grooved on the Cowsills. My youth would not of been the same without them. It looks like Susan is a little more mellow in this video. But she still has her groove. Early 1968 the "We Can Fly" album was released. The first album that Paul and Susan recorded on.This was the last year they performed as a complete group. By 1972, Barbara, Susan, and Paul left the group, and Bill returned to the original quartet
Isn't that Barry behind Bob, strumming a guitar? Paul is shown with the bass, but it wouldn't surprise me if Barry didn't play the bass on the recording. This is clearly lip-synched.
@@tombeyerlein3813I wondered who was on bass and I finally saw it was Paul, behind Susan, and Barry was to the left behind Bob. I wonder why Barry wasn't playing bass as usual.
This family was immensely talented. It's too bad they were both pigeonholed and ruined by their father manager. You'd think after the success of their version of Hair (the group's biggest hit) the record companies would have gotten a clue as to their potential.
The thing I liked best about this video is their mom looked so much more relaxed that she did in the 1960's videos in which I saw her. Like she was glad to be up there singing with the kids. I remember Bob saying once that she had a terrible case of stage fright. Great video!
I showed my 13 year old nephew this and he loved it. He said Susan was so hot, lol. I told him she is a bit too old for him. He said she wasn't. But I then explained to him this was 1971 and he hadn't known that before, lmao.
Nobody can harmonize as good as the Cowsills! If only we could have them all back on terra firma, happy, healthy and making music to soothe the souls of humanity...
Wish they could have escaped their father's grip. Maybe they'd have been able to ditch the tuxes. What sublime harmonies! A sound like no other group, and no other family of singers. Remarkable, truly. And they continue to land on those miracle sounds even today!
The sad part was their father. He stepped all over them, berated and abused them. How they could bounce back and deliver such great music is totally beyond my understanding. Yet, they delivered time and time again. Another plus was their dress. When the boys wore suits and bow ties they matched and looked damn good and it showed. They had fun with their music and that’s what’s missing from pop music today. Money was important but they didn’t let it interfere with delivering a good show. I just hope the remaking Cowsills know just how much they were appreciated then and are now.
lin sioux in what way are they posers? they were taken advantage of as young musicians, but they could all (and those who are living still can) write their own songs and they can each play several instruments. if you listen to their last two albums from their original stint, you’ll see they were gaining more independence in their music and it’s brilliant. they are all real and talented musicians. i don’t know what you mean by posers!
Having known the Cowsills well going to school with them and actually hearing Bill and Bob play “ I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND “ over the phone for my brother, I should mention that while they were known for their recordings, they were actually amazingly proficient at doing spot on covers of the Mamas and Papas, Roy Orbison and the Beatles to name but a few.
That must have been neat to go to school with them. "The Rain, The Park, And Other Things" is my MOST FAVORITE SONG by them and the most magical song I have ever heard in my life and I am 70!
@@DougCeleste It was neat going to the same school in Middletown, RI. In fact I think the “schoolhouse on the hill”mentioned in their song MOST OF ALL was Middletown High School. I lived right across the street from it and went to school there when Bill, Bob, Dick and Paul attended.
@@skipmessier765 Thanks for sharing your groovy notes, Skip! WOW, that must have been neat to go to school with the Cowsill brothers before they became famous. Sad that two of them passed on from Hurricane Katrina. The Cowsills thought that "Most Of All" was going to be their first big hit but for some reason, it only made it to #118 in the Billboard charts, even though it is a fine song that I discovered on UA-cam years ago since I never heard it on the radio where I lived in San Jose, CA. My only complaint with it was that the bridge lyrics in the middle of the song were sung much too fast and you cannot easily understand what was being said. But other than that, I LOVE the guitar and drum work in the song along with the singing. But "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" is the MOST MAGICAL song I have ever heard and still gives me goosebumps today at the age of 70. And my young niece (who is now 26) fell in love with that song and the oldies when I played it for her on YT when she was about 6. Many people call it "I Love The Flower Girl" and it originally was going to be called that but the producers changed the title since there were a couple of songs on the charts at the time with the word "flower" in them. Oh well....... It was one of their two biggest hits along with "Hair." It is nothing short of AMAZING that the group was as successful as it was with all the intense family struggles they were going through at the time and glad that some of them are still performing today. My sister saw them perform around 1970 in Salinas, CA. and LOVED the show. Too bad I never got to see them. Rock on from New Mexico!
@@DougCeleste The interesting thing about about the Cowsills was the parallel between them and The Beach Boys. Both were managed by a tyrannical father who in Bill’s case may have put him in the heavy drug situation and Brian being subjected to mental, emotional and physical abuse. The more you read about both groups and their histories, the more it seemed like jealousy on the part of the fathers.
@@skipmessier765 Interesting that you mention about the Beach Boys since these guys and the Monkees are my two favorite groups of all time. And yes, both the Beach Boys and the Cowsills had VERY controlling dads that caused havoc in many ways for both families. I knew Murry Wilson's brother and sister-in-law for a brief time in the early 90's and they lambasted what Brian said about their dad and did not believe anything he said about his abuse but I always believed Brian more. Their favorite nephew was Dennis who had drug and alcohol problems and left this life much too soon. And I was even more shocked reading about the Cowsills family. Like I said before, still AMAZING that they did as well as they did with their music with all their personal family problems. I even read that the dad sexually abused Susan but who knows if that is true or not. Just so sad that both families had to go through all this INTENSE turmoil in their musical careers which should have been some of the most happiest years in their lives.
People today can't understand the connection we had with the music we grew up with. They don't have it! However, you will read posts from young people who truly love the music of the 60's. It was a magical time!
I was born in '67, and one word I grew to dislike most of all from the 60's was, Groovy, among a few other words from that era. Other than that, this is a nice song. Other than that, I find it hard not to like the Cowsills.
Too bad great vocal harmony is dead. Got to listen to the oldies to find it. In my state capital market, only one station plays Cowsills, and it's AM! So sad
The Cowsills were right there with the best of them. most of their songs are incredible good, They could still do it even with the absents of Bill but they are getting older and maybe don't have the desire like they had when they were young.
Most of The Cowsills now are flying in Eternity😇 & I almost wanna join'em there since...where else can find such kickass harmony as this that can never be done again let alone be replaced here on Earth...EVER😭?
There's a very interesting (and somewhat sad) behind the scenes story about this family. Not as happy as they appeared on stage. Those kids were very talented!
There were very few groups that could sing harmony live as well as these guys. I realize this is lip-synced but check out some of their live performances, they're great.
@@gerrydooley951 I remember seeing them do Indian Lake acapella live on a TV show back in 69-71. One of the older brothers was in town on leave from the military. Still sounded great.
For this particular song, Bill and Bob Cowsill produced it, while Artie Schroek did the orchestral arrangement. It was written by Bill and Bob with Artie Kornfeld and Steve Duboff.

The songs of that era were optimistic ...you can hear it ....This is like up up and away in my Balloon ... wtf is happening today
They’re so vocally talented and the guys are so good looking I can’t decide who’s the handsomest.
People in school used to make fun of me for liking the Cowsills. But I knew they were a great band!
Same for Carpenters. Nobody wanted to admit that that was the best music ever.
We had/have good taste
They were extraordinary!
That is because its more like folk rock than rock and roll.
Both "bands" are cheezy! I am 65 and thought as a teen these groups were posers and that's because they are.
lin sioux in what way are they posers? they were taken advantage of as young musicians, but they could all (and those who are living still can) write their own songs and they can each play several instruments. if you listen to their last two albums from their original stint, you’ll see they were gaining more independence in their music and it’s brilliant. they are all real and talented musicians. i don’t know what you mean by posers!
You can see here why they were the inspiration for the TV show The Partridge family.
Sad that only two members of the Partridge family could carry a tune.
Susie always stole the show
I really Love this song.
Susan and I, share the same Birthday. X
One of my favorite songs !
Having known the Cowsills well going to school with them and actually hearing Bill and Bob play “ I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND “
over the phone for my brother, I should mention that while they were known for their recordings, they were actually amazingly proficient at doing spot on covers of the Mamas and Papas, Roy Orbison and the Beatles to name but a few.
Just so sad that both families had to go through all this INTENSE turmoil in their musical careers which should have been some of the most happiest years in their lives.
wonderful music!
Im sitting in a dinner this weekend and we can fly is playing on the radio station..so ,I start telling everyone around me who the Cowsills are..
bullshit
People today can't understand the connection we had with the music we grew up with. They don't have it! However, you will read posts from young people who truly love the music of the 60's. It was a magical time!
The Cowsills were the inspiration for the Partrigde Family.
The Partridge Family were the fake Cowsills
I was born in '67, and one word I grew to dislike most of all from the 60's was, Groovy, among a few other words from that era. Other than that, this is a nice song. Other than that, I find it hard not to like the Cowsills.
Love The Cowsills then love them now !
Back when I was a kid, I had the BIGGEST CRUSH on Susan!
punkrockpub and another million boys like us then!
Beautiful !!!!
They rocked 🎶❤🎶👏👍🎺
Music before is all about fun good vibes unlike now about heartbreak sadness sex and depression.
Most of The Cowsills now are flying in Eternity😇 & I almost wanna join'em there since...where else can find such kickass harmony as this that can never be done again let alone be replaced here on Earth...EVER😭?
Bob, Paul, Susan, and John are still around and they sound great. They have even brought their children in a couple of times.
There's a very interesting (and somewhat sad) behind the scenes story about this family. Not as happy as they appeared on stage. Those kids were very talented!
I've never heard this song before, but I enjoyed it.
God Bless Family, for all they have been through. They managed to stay together, through thick and thin.
Yes , they made it through! … I remember someone singing “ there’s got to be a morning after” I wonder if that sediment helped them.
Groovy man, right on.
Susan was just adorable
Say what you will they were a tight group.
@@Bargle5 they are extremely talented when it comes to singing
This is actually my favorite by the Cowsills, their fourth biggest hit.
"actually"
I adore this song 💖
awesome performance in basically real time!
I love this song ♥
Great sound
Every time I hear this song I keep thinking of Love American Style
They did do the soundtrack for that show
Chai'naMarie03 I didn’t know that.
They did sing the theme, although there was another version with studio singers during the run of the show.
I think they did it for a season or so. Then the same singers who backed up the themes of Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Wonder Woman did
You were such a cool dancer
I have always loved the Cowsills….
I would love to know who wrote these arrangements and produced this band. Very tasteful!
For this particular song, Bill and Bob Cowsill produced it, while Artie Schroek did the orchestral arrangement. It was written by Bill and Bob with Artie Kornfeld and Steve Duboff.
Say, was that Waddy Wachtel playing the Rickenbacker in the clip?@@blackmore4
Wow. Great audio.
Loved them then and now!!
billy had THE voice, theres a vid of him solo from mid 1990s and he does Devil Women, so much like Marty Robbins. Dad was a jerk
Such, happy, music....
Great harmony.
OjaiRoy siblings can do this best.
It's in the genes.
My favourite song.
Susan grown up a bit here in 1971, four years after this was a hit during the winter of '67 - '68. I had a crush on Susan then, when I was just halfway through my high school sophomore year.
she was 13 at this time...so i would say you would of had a shot at romance......
auhs70 I had a crush on her
I have adored Susan from the first time I saw her - I was 5 in 1967. She has some great moves in this video also!!
Creepy
Get real, she had cooties.
Buen grupo ,buen Tema y excelente año. Todo una maravilla.❤
Grab an old dictionary and look up the word, "groovy." Somehow you'll find a GIF of Susan Cowsill dancing.
Sssssh! Shush! Quiet...! Awwwbaby here it comes!.... I LOVE the build-up to the heavy part!🎵....🤘🎺TRUMPET SOLO!!!! 🎺🎵🤘
Susan has got the moves!
Please Please Please induct them to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame......Please!!!!!!!
The rhf is ridiculous .What is really important is, we are still listening to the groups 40YEARS 60 YEARS LATER we were living our lives and their music WAS A BIG PART OF OUR LIVES .NO AWARD CAN MATCH THAT AWARDS ARE NOTHING .
I never loved a group of people with a sincere heart!
This video was shot 3-4 years after "We Can Fly" was released as a single...what a shame they weren't actually performing it live. I'd have loved to hear what it sounded like without Billy, the strings and the horns. Love the Cowsills!
J Collins The horn is totally out of place here !
Me too.. any real live clip I've seen of this band shows how well they could recreate even multilayered recordings like TRTPAOT.
@@TVsMrHappyTalk Captain, You should go on their podcast. I wrote them a email saying you were a big fan.
I’d love to hear that conversation 😀
I actually love the horn on this. I think it gives it a smooth sophisticated sound, reminds me a little of something The Association would have done.
It's great pop music
Love 'em!
Great song, great band...
Great Family band. I notice the Mother never moves much. But the little sister got her moves together.
Mom is wasted, glassy eyed
I enjoyed John playing with The Beach Boys.
And he played on a couple of Fendertones covers of the Beach Boys!
Is it just my phone or did it sound like they were singing underwater?
Barbara looked her best here. I like the longer and more relaxed do!
Susan's got the moves!
THEY WERE AL FANTASTIC , BUT SUSAN OMG NO WORDS CAN SAY WHO GREAT SHE !!!!!
Alton Sikes She was great!
LOVE AMERICAN STYLE
I love you all so much! You are!!!!!!!!!!
