- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is a dark ride located in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter themed areas of Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida, and Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Japan. The ride takes guests through scenes and environments in and around Hogwarts Castle from the Harry Potter series of books and films. Mark Woodbury, president of Universal Creative, described the ride as an in-depth look at the world of Harry Potter, which utilizes never before seen technology which transforms "the theme park experience as you know it". The original attraction at Islands of Adventure opened with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter section on June 18, 2010. An installation has also been announced for Universal Studios Hollywood, with it due to open in 2016.
Guests walk through the gates of Hogwarts and begin their journey in the dungeons where they see items featured in the movies and books. Passengers enter through the castle doors, go to the lockers, queue outside in the green house and then enter the back castle doors. Objects recognizable from the series include the Mirror of Erised, the Hogwarts House Jewels, and talking portraits.
The ride begins with a dousing of Floo Powder from Hermione Granger, who asks the guests to say, "Observatory" in order to transport them to their desired location, and the enchanted bench flies off through the Floo Network to the Astronomy Tower. The guests leave the Astronomy Tower through its fireplace and enter the Observatory, where they look out through the open arches to the hills and lake outside Hogwarts' boundary. As the guests fly out of one of the Observatory's arches, the ride smoothly switches to a wrap-around projection screen and they follow Harry Potter and Ron Weasley around Hogwarts' buildings and towers to a Quidditch match. As Harry and Ron travel under a bridge, Hagrid yields the riders and asks them if they have seen a dragon. As Harry redirects the riders' attentions back to their journey, Hagrid's pet Hungarian Horntail dragon begins to chase the riders. The bench flies out of the projection screen and into a set of the uneven bridge that crosses the valley behind Hogwarts and, after falling out of a hole in the floor of the bridge, they encounter an animatronic dragon, which breathes false fire at them.
The riders descend into a set of the Forbidden Forest where they encounter a figure of Aragog a large, sentient spider who spits water at them. As Hermione tries to help the riders away from Aragog and towards the castle, encountering many spiders on the way, they encounter an animatronic Whomping Willow which swipes at them, knocking them into the Quidditch pitch. The ride returns to a projection screen as the riders become caught up in Harry's and Ron's game of Quidditch. As Slytherin scores into Gryffindor's goal, Dementors arrive at the Quidditch pitch and Harry attempts to lead the riders away through the structure of the pitch and back to the school, but their bench falls into the long-abandoned Chamber of Secrets through a hole. The riders return to a real set as the Dementors appear from the pipelines and chase them. The skeleton of the long-deceased Basilisk lies on the floor of the Chamber, and expels Lord Voldemort's Dark Mark into the air as the benches are drawn into the mouth of Salazar Slytherin's statue.
Many Dementors emerge from the darkness while one descends and attempts to suck out the rider's souls. This effect is achieved by projecting the rider's faces onto a cloud of fog in front of the Dementor, blasting cold air towards the riders, and using a heartbeat-like sound played through the sub-woofers built into the benches. After shaking the riders out of the trance, Harry causes the Dementors to flee with a protective Patronus charm.[11] After the final Dementor, and while Harry uses his Patronus, the riders enter the final video dome segment, where the cliffs outside the Chamber of Secrets cave in. They fly over the Black Lake, back into Hogwarts and through the Main Hall and Grand Staircase, where they are cheered on by a series of on-screen characters from the movies who appear three-dimensional. Professor Dumbledore sends everyone back through the Floo Network to the Room of Requirement, where they exit their bench

I'm terrified of all rollercoasters and rides of this sort, but being the potterhead i am i forced myself to go on this. I was scared shitless, but i cried of happiness when i got off (no joke) and going on this ride was one of the happiest moments of my life. This is for anyone who shaes my fear; just do it. #make your dreams come true.

I love Harry Potter, read the whole series going on 4 times. But I'm quite afraid of heights/certain roller coasters. Upon going in, I saw a video showing people going upside down and I panicked. We went to Universal Orlando for the first time with a friend and I was so scared. I kept asking employees, "Does it go upside down?" And they said no but I was still scared. As I got hooked up and the conveyor belt was moving, I started crying. My friend was next to me and I just held her hand and squeezed it and going on was scary like the flying and the harness or whatever scooted forward but otherwise, it was a blast. I just remember her hand being there and I think I let go and I got so relieved and I remember smiling and feeling so relieved and having fun on this ride. It's so worth it. If you love Harry Potter, please ride this, you will not regret it. We ended up riding it again, I still got scared because even after riding rides like 20x they still scare me but I knew what I was expecting and it was a blast. Remember, nearing the end of the day, the cues are wayyyy shorter and so you can pretty much almost go right to the ride. It was so much fun. It was so cool playing quidditch even though I was scared I was going to literally fly out of the harness thing.
I have Arachnophobia so the spider part scared the shit out of me. I swear it touched my leg.

When I went on this ride, I didn't know what I found more exciting, the ride or the fact the characters were talking to me. It was amazing.
I've been on this ride like 20 times now but it's always so eerie when you first walk into the castle.
Went on this ride couple days ago, it's a lot faster and more intense than it looks in video!! Everything is so up close and rugged and tilted and the added 4D effects really make it feel like you're flying

We were on that ride and everyone that just got off it needed to sit for a few minutes. It had some moments where you're gonna feel weird because your eyes and body are being in a fight with each other.
The only ride where the long waiting line is actually both worth it and entertaining lol

This ride, in my opinion, is the coolest ride ever. My six year old sister who went on it loved it so much, so did I. We went on 8 times! You really do feel as if you are flying. It is honestly so amazing.

for people saying it’s bad because they got sick, it has many warnings throughout the waiting line so it’s not the rides fault that you decided to ride if you get sick on these kinds of rides

This is hands down one of the coolest rides I’ve ever been on. My heart flies into my throat every time they tip you backward to duck out of the way of the Whomping Willow, but I freaking love it.
This was surprisingly one of my favorite rides there! With the tilted drops and a trill full ride it was very fun! :)

I’m a huge whimp but I went on this and thought is was so cool it made you feel like you were actually flying.even if you get nauseous just close your eyes.the scariest part is when you go on your back witch it even isn’t scary.

I rode it twice to celebrate my 30th Birthday (I am Harry Potter fan and a Gryffindor) and it's THE Ultimate Harry Potter Experience.
Went to Universal yesterday and this was by far my favorite ride. I hate roller coasters but I loved this. All the fun of flying like on a roller coaster but none of the actual sick falling sensation. I did it twice and definitely want to go back for more!

Okay, so I went on this ride recently and I was terrified but also amazed. It’s an incredible ride, but it can be terrifying. The best thing to do when you get scared is just close your eyes it works. Remember there’s not much they can do to you. Especially since you’re in seats that hang in the air.

Extremely cool ride even though it made me insanely motion sick, walking through hogwarts while waiting was also amazing and blew my mind.
This ride was freaking dope! I'm not a huge Harry Potter fan, but this was still really fun and cool. The filma have always had this horror aspect and magical wonder and the ride captures it all! A must for anyone at either Universal park.
when ut was first opened and I came here in 2012, it took around 3 hours to get there. It was awsome though.
Good quality video! I went on it as a teen (who doesn't like roller coasters and gets motion sickness). I cried the entire time and for a good hour afterwards because I was so frightened and felt so sick. I wish I would have watched this before, I would have known this type of dark ride is not for me!

I remember riding this for the first time and telling myself I will keep my eyes open the entire time but I ended up not listening to myself. So second time around, I told myself the same thing, but I STILL shut my eyes. Do you think that if I keep this up with myself that it'll go in an endless loop? 😜

Riding this was one of the best experiences of my life
This ride broke down while me and my family were riding about 10 years ago now, it was quite unnerving being stuck in front of the blank screen for that long, it did get us free passes past the queue the second time we tried to ride it tho!
I normally don’t scream or laugh during rides but this got the biggest reaction out of me! So worth the 2.5 hours wait!

I went on this ride 3 times I really loved it, has to be my favourite
I went on this today. I HATE roller coaster and everyone including a worker at the entrance to this ride told me it was like Soarin at Epcot. For me, this ride was terrifying!! You feel like you are on a roller coaster. Normally if I feel motion sickness on a simulator I just look away from the screen. That does not work on this ride. You are moving, tilting etc.

This ride was amazing. I had to wait nearly two hours but it was so freakin worth it. The only thing is that you're actually really close to the wall. My foot hit the wall once and my friend (who was sitting next to me) full on kicked a spider on accident. But other then that it was awesome.

Why does almost every UA-camr record the line ? Like if you agree that even though the line is short, long, cool or anything else they shouldn't record the line
The queue is part of the immersion. It sets the tone for the attraction.
I remember I was at universal studios LA with my family and that we rode on this ride and that I was so happy. We stopped infront of a holographic dementor because something went wrong but gladly it was fixed. That was the best day of my life.

I went to universal studios this summer and we decided to go on this ride because it was the shortest wait. There was 4 of us and we all went in the single rider line so we wouldn’t have to wait as long. We went on this ride and I say IT WAS THE BEST RIDE EVER!! The part where the dragon breathed on you kinda stunk. The whomping willow part caught me off guard but it was super fun! I wasn’t a big fan of the part where the scary ghost things come out at you. We all got off the ride ALL of us agreed we needed to ride again because it was so much fun!! I recommend this ride a 100000000000/10
