Grace... how do they not have almost an entire act dedicated to him creating West Side Story?! You could make an entire movie on that alone! I'd bet it's more interesting than the majority of the film we get.
As a Bernstein fan I am really disappointed. For people who are interested in the music, check out the many videos of him playing the piano while conducting, such as Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major.

You are a bit harsh. With the limited attention span of movie audiences, choices must be made to condense the information available. You don't like Cooper's choices in telling this story. Okay! Don't fault him for not making a 4 hour biopic that would have flopped instantly with the attention-deficit audiences who attend movies now.
Grace, Being a gay may (depended upon your life circumstance) can mean you were extremely performative to fit the "normative". However there are many gay people that come out , become very different, Then there are many gay people that come out and you just see many different shades of the person than you had ever seen before. Pointing it out for your understanding of the character choices or presentation.
Did you not see the West Side Story reference when they were getting out of the car walking into the house? The score. It was straight from West Side Story.

I used to go to Leonard Bernstein's "Young people's Concerts", first at Carnegie Hall and then in the "new" Lincoln Center philharmonic hall. I couldn't get more than 5 minutes into this film....choking on the dialog along with the cigarette smoke. I'll take Grace's word for it and just keep my memories. More and more I realize how lucky we were to grow up in an age of such creative innovation when artists were known for their brilliance and no one cared about their personal lives.zzzzzzz
She's a fictional character, but Leonard Bernstein's television program for kids is what inspires Lydia Tár to become a maestro. You would imagine a film about him to touch on that aspect of his life.
"A Star Is Born" is one of my fav movies, but I couldn't do this one. I exited after 60 minutes. It felt like I was watching a muppet talk through cigarette smoke for an hour😩 Bradley is so talented but I was expecting so much more of the creative man behind Bernstein, not his love life.

Grace is young and often learns about her subjects popularity via tertiary sources. I remember her saying Will Smith was the first Black global movie star, blowing right past Eddie Murphy's huge global box office impact during the 1980's. She's very good, she just has to be better sourced when she deals with eras outside her experience : )
I hope you review more awards movies this upcoming season like Poor Things and May December, Grace. It's a nice change of pace from the usual blockbusters once in a while ☺️

Proof: his conducting (after 6 years of professional prep) in the Mahler/cathedral scene is completely absurd. Everything about the project feels like an industry circle jerk.

Although I am impressed by Bradley Cooper, I am not impressed by this film. However, this is the kind of film the academy will trip over themselves for. They usually identify with these subject matters more closely than others in the population. 😢
I saw MAESTRO at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood this weekend and really enjoyed it, especially Carey Mulligan’s performance, that I think will go ahead-to-head with Annette Benning for Best Actress. That said, I am also a classical music nerd, West Side Story fanatic and former bassoon player who grew up watching Bernstein on TV. As a music lover I was waiting to see his PROCESS - but I decided to enjoy the performances and the cinematic styles through the decades. I agree about that bus shot! I had seen DOUBLE INDEMNITY a week prior and it brought back a noir moment for me. Anyway: I agree with you that this movie missed the most obvious thing about Leonard Bernstein; and also, it’s still a really good film.

It's unfortunate that this movie doesn't know what it wants to be and instead of focusing on the titular "Maestro", it instead meanders through his relationship in small vignette-type scenes with no throughline. Sad to see since I think Cooper is talented and Mulligan was on her A game here. And I will say Grace, in the defense of Cooper, he actually really likes Bernstein and his music and wanted to practice conducting for a while, even before the idea of the film! I guess he used this movie as the catalyst to finally work at it. But unfortunately in the end, Bernstein deserved a better portrayal. Guess Cooper cares more about the artifice than depth. I'm sure he'll get nominated for an Oscar, but I doubt he'll win. I'll be disappointed if he does.

If you want to see a documentary, check out 2016’s Leonard Bernstein: Larger Than Life, or read the Bernstein biography by John Greun, “The Private World of Leonard Bernstein.” But if you want to watch a terrific film about a complicated and fascinating marriage with great acting performances and terrific cinematography, treat yourself to this movie.

I think this film is a reverse bell curve. People who don’t know anything about Lenny will enjoy it a lot, as will people who know a *great deal* about Bernstein the man. People who know a good deal about Bernstein the musician likely won’t, as they’re disappointed various things from his career have been omitted. This film was almost entirely based on the memoir “Famous Father Girl”, written by Lenny’s daughter, Jamie Bernstein. When viewers understand the context of that book and how it covers Bernstein the man, Bernstein the father, and Bernstein the husband, they better understand the context of the film. It’s a personal story.
I find it funny that grace thinks it’s strange for people’s personalities to changes so rapidly but I have a few gay friends that as soon as they came out they were like two different people.
I think it was stunning and Carey was fantastic, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters it's weird. They said a lot of things and talked about things but I couldn't see many of it. The film doesn't care about Felicia enough for me as well
This is disappointing, I was interested in this film for the music and to learn how his writing process worked as well as the business side of it. If it's just his personal life I'm much less interested.

Just attended a screening last night at the Academy of Motion Pictures in LA. It was followed by a Q&A panel including Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan and Sarah Silverman. For me the showstopper was the Mahler 2nd symphony sequence but I also would have liked to see more emphasis put on West Side Story and his life's work as opposed to his personal exploits. I think a cheapens the man.
Overall amazing film despite you review against Bradley vision. Respectfully I disagree with your review. There is a hint of contradiction in this review.
Grace Randolph is hilarious. She is now my fav film critic online! This was a very funny review. On a serious note, actually want to see this film because of the relationship between Cooper and Mulligan. Seems like the film fleshes that aspect out
I'm not fussed about straight actors playing gay roles, or absolute representation and such; but something about the premise of this movie feels a bit cynical. Bradley Cooper choosing the subject of a closeted man because he's greedily eyeing an Oscar, and not because he wants to approach and explore the subject honestly. It feels a bit exploitative, especially if it's as surface level as it seems to be from Grace's review.
Once again, like it happens almost everytime, Grace missed the point of the movie. Never in the movie they portrayed the Bernstein family as a horrible family! Are for damn real?! Did you even see the same movie?
I was also at the New York Film Festival this weekend! I saw Poor Things and All Of Us Strangers and they were both excellent! I had such a great time!
You know I had a feeling this movie was overhyped and after watching your review I'm now convinced it definitely was. I'm still going to check it out because like you Grace I respect people in the industry that take chances and push boundaries, even if it doesn't work out.
I paused the new episode of Ahsoka to watch this review. Fascinating! I'm gonna need time to digest all this. It's interesting, because usually with biopics the reverse is often said; too much focus on achievements and not enough airing out dirty laundry. From the trailer I suspected Maestro was mostly about his relationship with his wife and being in the closet and all. That's too provocative not to put in a movie. But it is a little surprising they don't showcase Bernstein's bigger achievements. But I guess if someone actually cared to learn about Bernstein, they'd watch a documentary or read a book. I'll definitely be seeing this when it hits Netflix.
This is such a weird review. I get it’s not the film you’d have liked to see but it’s clear from the trailer it’s about the relationship between Leonard and Felicia. And the comments about the Bernstein family are so judgemental.
Actually I think the Danny Boyle Steve Jobs movie was very balanced in its exploration of Jobs and his daughter's complex relationship. It wasn't an indictment in the ending but it felt emotionally powerful and true to me. I think the Steve Jobs movie was really pretty good

If you must use prosthetics, atleast cast a Jewish actor to put them on, (Jake Gyllinhall is right there) Also, I'm just gonna say it, his nose is a different shape, sure, but building it on top of an already existing nose just makes it appear cartoonishly oversized
the fact that bradley cooper, a very non-jewish actor, literally wore an offensively large charicature nose prosthetic to portray a jewish man whose real-life nose looked way more like bradley cooper's real-life nose, and nobody seems to be offended by it, is baffling to me
well, people were offended, i do think rightfully so, cause i really think that when non-jewish famous people are portrayed and they have a slightly bigger nose, they dont bother giving them prosthetics.

For me the showstopper was the Mahler 2nd symphony sequence but I also would have liked to see more emphasis put on West Side Story and his life's work as opposed to his personal exploits. I think a cheapens the man.

Grace Randolph is hilarious. She is now my fav film critic online! This was a very funny review. On a serious note, actually want to see this film because of the relationship between Cooper and Mulligan. Seems like the film fleshes that aspect out

I'm not fussed about straight actors playing gay roles, or absolute representation and such; but something about the premise of this movie feels a bit cynical. Bradley Cooper choosing the subject of a closeted man because he's greedily eyeing an Oscar, and not because he wants to approach and explore the subject honestly. It feels a bit exploitative, especially if it's as surface level as it seems to be from Grace's review.

Once again, like it happens almost everytime, Grace missed the point of the movie.
Never in the movie they portrayed the Bernstein family as a horrible family! Are for damn real?! Did you even see the same movie?

I was also at the New York Film Festival this weekend! I saw Poor Things and All Of Us Strangers and they were both excellent! I had such a great time!

You know I had a feeling this movie was overhyped and after watching your review I'm now convinced it definitely was. I'm still going to check it out because like you Grace I respect people in the industry that take chances and push boundaries, even if it doesn't work out.

I paused the new episode of Ahsoka to watch this review. Fascinating! I'm gonna need time to digest all this. It's interesting, because usually with biopics the reverse is often said; too much focus on achievements and not enough airing out dirty laundry. From the trailer I suspected Maestro was mostly about his relationship with his wife and being in the closet and all. That's too provocative not to put in a movie. But it is a little surprising they don't showcase Bernstein's bigger achievements. But I guess if someone actually cared to learn about Bernstein, they'd watch a documentary or read a book. I'll definitely be seeing this when it hits Netflix.

This is such a weird review. I get it’s not the film you’d have liked to see but it’s clear from the trailer it’s about the relationship between Leonard and Felicia. And the comments about the Bernstein family are so judgemental.

Actually I think the Danny Boyle Steve Jobs movie was very balanced in its exploration of Jobs and his daughter's complex relationship. It wasn't an indictment in the ending but it felt emotionally powerful and true to me. I think the Steve Jobs movie was really pretty good

Was the guy who played Aaron Copeland really good that’s Brian Klugman his great uncle is Jack Klugman from the odd couple. He directed Bradley Cooper in the words.

A. Cast an actor who looks more like him.
B. Just accept Bradley looks different and oh well.
C. If you must use prosthetics, atleast cast a Jewish actor to put them on, (Jake Gyllinhall is right there)
Also, I'm just gonna say it, his nose is a different shape, sure, but building it on top of an already existing nose just makes it appear cartoonishly oversized

the fact that bradley cooper, a very non-jewish actor, literally wore an offensively large charicature nose prosthetic to portray a jewish man whose real-life nose looked way more like bradley cooper's real-life nose, and nobody seems to be offended by it, is baffling to me
His appearance looks pretty accurate to Bernstein. Just google pictures there are even some side by sides
well, people were offended, i do think rightfully so, cause i really think that when non-jewish famous people are portrayed and they have a slightly bigger nose, they dont bother giving them prosthetics.
