The plastic trick works, and I use it frequently detailing. You need to use a heat gun, a torch is too much. It doesn't work with very thick plastic very well though.
It’s also used on plastic stadium seats, but the key there is also a much slower billowing flame. You don’t want a ton of heat blowing too quickly at it, you just need the heat to barely lick the surface so it melts and refreezes the plastic quickly, which will refinish the surface since the grime and oxidation will burn right off as it happens
Question, how do you protect the paint? Do you need to? I've thought about doing this to my car but I'm concerned the paint near the plastic will bubble or peel.
We restored all the plastic on an old four wheeler to almost like new condition with this hack saving a massive amount of cash. The tennis ball works because of heat generated from friction similar to a buffer. The fibers might help like rubbing compound. You can’t get too hot cause you can do damage though.
The antilag hack would work with a carbed engine, since the air flow would still suck gas despite the electric switch state being off. As soon as you turn on the switch there will be an excess of unburned gas inside the exhaust.
Anyone reading this, for god's sake don't do this to a car. You can bend a valve, warp the throttle body, even blow a converter or muffler off the car. It's about as smart as dropping a small bomb in the intake. A single backfire, (this is an intake backfire) can do thousands of dollars worth of damage. Oh and on a vehicle with a carb it will often burn the car to the ground. You just threw fire at a carburetor full of gasoline.
I've taken a lid to an old gallon oil container and drilled a hole in it, stuck a piece of clear rubber hose through the hole and JB welded the shit out of it. Put the lid on a new bottle of oil, stick the hose in the oil fill hole, turn it upside down and stab the bottom of the bottle, it fills up quick with no drips
So the hack with the plastic trim and torch. Your biggest issue is you are using MAP gas I believe which burns hotter than propane. I used to work at a plastic rotational molding company and we would use the big propane weed burning torches to bring the color out on products. The heat realigns the plastic molecules which gives it that fresh shinny look. Love the video boys! Keep em coming!
MAPP burns way hotter than propane, but no one makes MAPP any more. That was almost certainly Map Pro, which is propylene, which is only marginally hotter than propane. I think they were mostly just holding it too close.
I was going to say the same thing. Local hoons love doing key bangers at 3am. Sounds like a gun shot, that is not a common thing to hear in urban Australia.
15:00 the proper way to do this is with a drill and a buffing attachment, dont put on any coumpound and build up tha friction, that way it only melts the very top layer, doing it with a blowtorch will make the plastics brittle
A little bit of compound helps with the burn you can get with buffing, preferably hit it after you spur off your pad between sections. Drills dont have enough rpm to get that shine needed, you need a buffer IMO
Also I'm sure it depends on the gas that you use; propane versus butane. I believe butane burns a ton hotter, so propane is the way to go. I've seen videos of this working on sun damaged stadium bleacher seats using a larger flamethrower nozzle and further distance from the nozzle in the plastic resulting in lower heat. Makes me wonder if this might work done fogged up headlights 🤔
The dipstick trick worked great for me topping off my ATF in my old Saturn because the fill point was super low in the engine bay and had a small hole.
Regarding the Anti-Lag hack, this generally only works on cars with a Carburetor as opposed to EFI. As with a Carby, the fuel / air is mixed by purely mechanical actuation and passive fluid dynamics, which continues even once the spark plug is disconnected. The combustible mixture will be passed out the exhaust valve and start to fill the tailpipe. The longer you have it 'off' for, or more you pump the gas, the bigger bang you get! This works extremely well on older cars, and in most cases if you overdo it, you will blow a hole in the muffler (permanently giving you that sweet aftermarket exhaust sound). In reality it sounds more like a backfire than an Anti-Lag system. It can be great fun if have a car you don't care about, and want to scare the crap out of anyone nearby!
I was making my 1978 Datsun pop like that back in the 80's. Id rev to about 5 grand, cut the power for a second and turn it right back on. Sometimes id get a small flame out the pipes. Yes, it works
@@znorrk2 yes, it need carburetor, you can add more fuel, when you turn engine off, pump gas and turn on the ingition. while driving it's easier. but it will blow up you'r exhaust, atleast muffler will be cut in half sooner or later.
@@znorrk2 Yea its at least a lot easier on carbs. I have done it with both my old moped and a kerosene/gasoline powered tractor. ;) (It blew the muffler like 10 meters behind me on the moped so i had to drive home without it late at night)
This works preferably on carb cars yes but some fuel injection motors also do it I know Ford rocam motor also does that like a boss and shoots 6 foot flames
@Brotato Yeah. I was thinking about a specific F1 clip where the driver's steering wheel suddenly comes off when he's driving down the straight. He saved it by holding the column in one hand and got the wheel back on, then resumed racing.
That whole "crackles and pops from the exhaust thing" back in the carbureted days you would push in the clutch, turn off the key, kick the gas pedal a couple times, turn the key back on then bump start it by dumping the clutch - key banger. That blow torch restore plastic thing, they do it on baseball stadium seats that fade; it works on a certain kind of plastic.
For pouring oil: use key to put finger sized hole in bottle seal. Put finger over hole. Invert and place over fill. Remove finger and place bottle neck fully into filler neck. Squeeze bottle to increase flow release to bring air into bottle and squeeze again.
Back in the day with a carburetor, you'd shut off the key and then pump the gas a whole bunch, lift off the gas and turn on the key and run over your muffler when it blew off.
I have been watching this channel back you had 1 video a week. The fact that you put the time in to research stuff is amazing. I think everyone at Donut has to have a lot of fun as well as learn just as much getting out of there comfort zone with working on new things. Keep up the great content 👏.
the oil dipstick thing is actually super useful. my three piece oil pan leaks, go figure and I just top her off every week but get oil literally everywhere.
The homemade antilag trick was really popular in the '80s. I used to live near a highway overpass and everyone would do it every time they drove under it.

I've done the torch months ago on my escape cladding and works amazingly well. 1st hold it 6inches away . 2nd move around alot . You can also use a heatgun
Back in 05 in a class at Motorcycle Mechanics Institute I blew apart the muffler on a Buell Firebolt xb12r doing utilizing the "off/on" method at high revs. Our instructor was not pleased, wasn't mad either, and we got to upgrade the exhaust after that.
Known about the blowtorch trick since 2009, being in the Jeep community. I have done this with my own wrangler. It works. But like they said the correct plastic and the practice is what it takes.
for the plastic hack at the end, iirc the difference is that in order for the finish to come back without the plastic getting all melty, it needs to be a thermoset rather than a thermoplastic
The ignition bang trick works great on a carburetated motorcycle. Just flip that kill switch on/off as you decelerate in gear and youll sound like a drive by
Yeah I don't think it works vehicles with electronic fuel injection. To work it requires fuel to be flowing to the cylinders while the ignition is is off - so carbs and maybe mechanical fuel injection.
The pop trick works best on carbs, used to do it from time to time on my dirt-bike (and it's even easier on bikes because they have kill-switches). Never managed to do it on fi.
Used to Keybang the shit outta my D16 i had in my Honda (we call it keybanging in the UK) and with a nice system it would shoot big flames which was always fun
The oil hack: try pouring with the opening of the oil-container not down but up. This way you can pour without airbubbles interfering with the oil. Once there sufficient oil has been poured, you can flip the oil-container and pour more rapidly. Works even faster then using the oil-stick as a guide. Using a stick to guide the liquid however stays a brillant hack for when you need to pour very precise.
Trim restore? Cerakote. I've used it on several parts and it's held up impressively well. My side mirrors have been shiny and black for the last ~2 years of sitting outside in direct sun so I can say it's not half bad.
11:48 fun fact if you do this with a carburetted vehicle while it's in motion you can literally detonate the muffler and cat. Raw unburned fuel/air charge will build up in these areas and when the engine fires back up again the resulting pops and bangs will be quite a bit bigger than expected. This happens because carburetted vehicles rely on physics rather than electronics to fuel themselves; any time the engine is rotating it is pulling fuel in and if it's not burning it that fuel gets pumped right back out again.
Even though it did kinda work, in the first hack you can clearly see the guy scratch the rear passenger door (door panel gap between front and rear doors is on the right and rear wheel in picture) and after the cut the "fixed" panel is the front passenger door since you can see the reflection of the side mirror magically appear in the panel.
I’ve used the dipstick trick for topping up trans fluid in my 99 ram, couldn’t find a funnel small enough to fit in the dipstick tube and was too lazy to find one, threw in the dipstick and poured it in there, works great for small amounts

Tbf I've seen another YTer, Torque Steer, use the heating trim method but using a heat gun instead of a handheld blow torch and it worked wonders for his car
If had it work just fine both ways, the problem is it only lasts about a week
@@wyckedan for him it did last longer but it also be because of different climates. The TikTok was most likely done in the US whereas Torque Steer is in the UK, and we end up getting less direct sunlight than the US a lot of the year

@@wyckedan That's why you clear coat the plastic immediately after you do this.
@@wyckedan Keeps it looking great for much longer. You can do the same thing to headlights after polishing them.
The tennis ball works because of heat generated from friction similar to a buffer. The fibers might help like rubbing compound. You can’t get too hot cause you can do damage though.
The antilag hack would work with a carbed engine, since the air flow would still suck gas despite the electric switch state being off. As soon as you turn on the switch there will be an excess of unburned gas inside the exhaust.
works on injection engine too if you have no catalytic converters
Did it with a 93 Dakota. Easier if you’re moving in gear. It did turn the muffler into one of those exploding joke cigars tho. Use with caution.

When I change my oil. I pour the first qt in and cut the bottom of the first qt bottle off and use it as a funnel
@@lordowl3533 that's a great idea. I think I might do that instead
It's about time you got a science staff! Keep up the good work, Joe Fist the Scientist!
They had one, then he left to raise a family or something. :(
So the hack with the plastic trim and torch.
That was my thought too, MAP is too hot.
MAPP burns way hotter than propane, but no one makes MAPP any more. That was almost certainly Map Pro, which is propylene, which is only marginally hotter than propane. I think they were mostly just holding it too close.
that “anti-lag” hack is very common in australia, we just call it key banging
😂😂😂
I was going to say the same thing. Local hoons love doing key bangers at 3am. Sounds like a gun shot, that is not a common thing to hear in urban Australia.
Lotta 15 yo’s here in Sweden do that with their mopeds too haha
Works best with a Carby, and if you do it good enought, she will peel your exhaust box like a banana!
Same thing here in New Zealand, any old carby motor will key bang if you try haha
15:00 the proper way to do this is with a drill and a buffing attachment, dont put on any coumpound and build up tha friction, that way it only melts the very top layer, doing it with a blowtorch will make the plastics brittle
Another method is with a temperature controllable heat gun

James when was last time that you say: " This is everything you need to know....." we all miss that.

I was making my 1978 Datsun pop like that back in the 80's. Id rev to about 5 grand, cut the power for a second and turn it right back on. Sometimes id get a small flame out the pipes. Yes, it works
The popping exhaust has worked for me, I have literally blown up an exhaust doing this, but it was deffo worth it :)
Now I wanna try it💀
I believe this only works on carbs, not injector vehicles.
I have done it with both my old moped and a kerosene/gasoline powered tractor. ;)
(It blew the muffler like 10 meters behind me on the moped so i had to drive home without it late at night)
This works preferably on carb cars yes but some fuel injection motors also do it I know Ford rocam motor also does that like a boss and shoots 6 foot flames
I used to do the “anti lag” pop all the time in my old civic. Driving through downtown I thought it was funny to scare people.

Whats worse than not having a shift knob?
James: ~litterally nothing~
Not having a steering wheel maybe?
After that shift knob mod the Jetta should be named “THE LOADED POTATO”
For pouring oil: use key to put finger sized hole in bottle seal. Put finger over hole. Invert and place over fill. Remove finger and place bottle neck fully into filler neck. Squeeze bottle to increase flow release to bring air into bottle and squeeze again.
I blew up my muffler, shortly after learning the backfire hack. Gotta keep it floored, while the key is off.
Back in the day with a carburetor, you'd shut off the key and then pump the gas a whole bunch, lift off the gas and turn on the key and run over your muffler when it blew off.

the blowtorch one works way better with a heat gun, less hot than a blowtorch and easier to control. worked wonders in the detailing business
I've done the torch months ago on my escape cladding and works amazingly well. 1st hold it 6inches away . 2nd move around alot . You can also use a heatgun
That's terrible for the trim in the long run. You're much better off using a quality trim dressing.
Make sure it's also very clean, oil and stuf will leave nasty mark
The problem is the plastic underneath is now brittle, the heat just moves the oils around within the plastic

for the plastic hack at the end, iirc the difference is that in order for the finish to come back without the plastic getting all melty, it needs to be a thermoset rather than a thermoplastic
I managed to do it on my fuel injected Honda motorcycle. I discovered it by accident while riding.
Depends on the fi system, a lot of systems also kill the fuel system instead of just the ignition

The two small suculant plants on the desk really give off a "classy" vibe haha
The oil hack: try pouring with the opening of the oil-container not down but up. This way you can pour without airbubbles interfering with the oil. Once there sufficient oil has been poured, you can flip the oil-container and pour more rapidly. Works even faster then using the oil-stick as a guide. Using a stick to guide the liquid however stays a brillant hack for when you need to pour very precise.
When liquid goes through my exhaust pipe I usually experience an explosion. Your results may vary.

14:25 Works perfectly for me, but I use a heat gun. It isn't as intense an a blow torch. On my Hummer H3 I had to redo it after a year or so.
After watching a lot of deep dive science chats its nice to kick back and see some idiots make slime for the 5th time ; )
11:48 fun fact if you do this with a carburetted vehicle while it's in motion you can literally detonate the muffler and cat.
Joe's hilarious. We need more of him
