  • A Long Island man thought he was buying a rare classic car online, but he says he ended up sending $25,000 to a scammer impersonating a real business. The real business owner says he reported the imposter website to federal law enforcement weeks ago, so why is the listing still up? CBS News New York investigative reporter Tim McNicholas went searching for answers.

    1. Verify the number you are calling independently through searches, verify the email on the phone call.
    2. Don't pay anything without sitting in the car, checking both VINs against databases and seeing a title with the same. Research what your state's car title should look like.
    3. Check the seller's ID against the title.
    4. For private sellers, do the $/title/key exchange in a bank. Lots of cameras. Dirtbags hate 'em, but legit sellers will have no problem with it.

No way I would send that much money without seeing it in person first. He could have least put the money in escrow.

I sent cash to these same scammers four times and and didn't receive any of the cars as advertised. I hope CBS News can help me get my money back.

1:05 if your on disability. Crying to the news that you cannot buy your luxury items is a bad idea. When many people can't buy Food or pay there bills.

Sad but welcome to capitalism. Looks like the individual didn't take enough time vetting out the website and the business. To spend that kind of money on anything, wouldn't you want to spend time and money to visit (in this case) the car too?
