- Street Photography with a Hasselblad 500CM.
In this video, I walk through the city documenting life on the street and the people of Toronto with a Hasselblad. It’s a very different experience shooting with a larger, medium format camera when shooting street photography. It’s much slower and is perfectly suited for making street portraits. Often a discussion piece, people are intrigued to see such a camera among all of today’s highly sophisticated, computer aided gear.
My name is Carmine Groe.
With street photography, my goal is to enjoy the process in an open and honest way, to make connections with strangers while making their portrait as well as capturing candid moments of every day life on the street.
My Gear for this video:
Hasselblad 500 cm
Carl Zeiss 80mm F/2.8
Phase One P25 Digital Back
Thanks to Tony Lei for capturing the Video
Tony’s video Gear:
Sony A7 III

nice video and stunning results! would you pls reveal more details about how you communicated with those people? like what did/would you say?
Thanks for watching Cao! I approach people, tell them who I am and that I'd like to make their portrait. Most people are flattered and are willing to. I always offer to send them pictures as well which helps. If you have a business card of some sort, that helps even more with the trust factor. Good luck!
At least you are not like Bruce Gilden. He is something else with his approach in taking pictures of complete strangers especially with his flash "BAM" close right in the face!
Zantaaa!!! Arrrrrrrr
Great video
I discovered that you can photograph with a Hasselblad unnoticed anywhere as long as you never bring the camera to eye level.
Yeah, infinity focus with proper metering.
Thank you for sharing your street photography experience. Good vibes.
Thank you for Watching! This was my pleasure!
Zanta is back!
Well done Carmine , at 3:20 she knows what to do .
I used a blad for street, it was a bit cumbersome but people were looking straight into the lens because there wasn't the feeling that you are looking directly at them and they are not sure what you are doing.
canturgan Yes, you are so right! The approach and therefore the result can be different because of the shooting method of these cameras. It’s one of the reasons why the great Diane Arbus, for example, switched to medium format at one point in her career; to gain a formality and closeness with her subject when making portraits. I love the waist level finder!
Great B&W snaps with CM. I snap with 503CX + 50mm, 80mm & 150mm : )
Digital back with the analogue markers... Same film no on all... Hilarious
just for illustrative purposes of course. Isn't that clear, since I'm using a digital back?
Hi , I enjoy watching this video . Will a 120 film creates softer look ? I feel the digital back gives very sharp look . Have you done any comparison between film and p25 back ? Thanks !
It really is not always about sharpness. Film and digital are different processes that give a different experience and a different result. One is not necessarily better or worse than the other. Film means you will be more selective, shoot less and think more. That is the real and only significant difference.
That was some really great and sharp Images. Loved it!
Leffe49 thank you Leffe👍
I am very disappointed that Hasselblad do not have made a large sensoer back for the 500 200/2000 series, at least 50x50mm sensoer with at least 100 megapixels !
Who knows, if there's enough demand, that may come in the future!
Another great video and it’s good to see that the cops in Toronto are just as willing to pose for photos as here in Calgary. Look forward to the next video, stay safe and keep shooting. 👍
City Street thanks for the great support!
Groe Photography YVW really enjoy the videos thanks for sharing
3:59 awesome
Love the flow of these vids! streettoggin and some minimal tech in the back goes well :)
Digital back?! Forget it.
Film or nothing.
Tonality, definition and stakes.
Helge Frisenette I love film too! Nice to have the flexibility of film and digital with same system. The real strength of the hassie is the form factor and way it allows me to shoot and engage with portrait subjects. The rest is just technical stuff, which in reality is so much less important in my opinion.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching Jerry!
Super cool video. Tell me please one thing. Which digital back did you use and is there a port for sd cards included?
Hi Resa, The Phase One P25 ( 22mp CCD sensor ) Digital Back - and Yes, there is a port for a Compact Flash (CF) card. See this video of mine for more details: ua-cam.com/video/rxjqoWTrCts/v-deo.html
Thanks for a great video. I really enjoy your videos.
Thank you Marcelo! It makes me so happy to hear that👍
People in Toronto are so chilled compared to London.
Thank you
Great video, keep shooting
Marcel Mutze thanks Marcel!
Great soundtrack
Are you using a digital back ?
Yes, Phase One P25.
Great video! Love the edit! Good job! Thanks for asking me to shoot for you.
Thanks for the great support Tony!
Always good job...
Rémy Grégoire thanks again Rémy!👍
I thought you were using film , until you show the P25 back .
I was here last year and I own a 500. How much is a digital back these days? I look and prices are all over the place.
kenneth M you can get a phase one p25 for about 2500 CAD, V mount and fits easily to a Hassie 500 series body.
@@CarmineGroe Oh thank you! I may have to do that, I have a 500 with two lenses and think I'd love that.
kenneth M I know you would! You may have to do a calibration with a Hasselblad tech to ensure the whole thing is working perfectly; focus, switches etc. I did a complete tune up when I got my setup, well worth it. Good luck!
@@CarmineGroe I'm still keeping my eye out for one, I loved this video as well!
Bravo Carmine
Many greetings from Cologne, Germany, nice video
Kersten Zölfel many thanks for watching Kersten! Great to hear from Cologne!
Omg omg omg! 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Great video! how do you keep track of who to send the right photos to?
Nico Ramirez thanks for tuning in Nico. Well, just after the portraits, I will take a few moments, capture the contact info on my phone and write down a description of the shot. I try to email shots to the people within 24 hrs.
I usually give people my card and ask them to email me. If they want it, they'll write. Most of the time, they don't even bother, so it saves me from any work. I guess they figure their friend can take a photo with their camera phone. HAHAHA!
Nice video. The only thing is that this is not street photography. It's shooting portraits on the street, which is different from street photography.
Aksoar look up Bruce Gilden. Is he a street photographer? These are chance encounters, unplanned portraits of people as they are on the street or in a public place.
@@CarmineGroe he is a street photographer. He doesn't stop and talk for minutes and he doesn't ask for their permission. Once you start doing that, the subjects will pose and it will no longer be a random encounter and an unplanned moment.
@@Aksoar yes he does sir.

Do you really have to point the light meter onto the face of the person you going to shoot?
Nice video and inspiring!
Nelsinho Pereira dos Santos thank you Nelsinho! Glad you enjoyed this video! Many more like this to come. Cheers👍
What with the fake Ilford FP4 film edge on the B&W conversions?
How does an older digi back hold up these day's? Got a 503cw and in doubt if I should invest in a cheaper old digiback.
Michiel Siegers the downside of an older digital back like the Phase One P 25 is the low light capabilities. Amazing image quality at 50-100 iso but don't go higher than that. The more current ones obviously are more flexible but cost big bucks. If you're after superb quality where you can control the amount of light you have, you won't be disappointed.
Thanks for the insight. Will probably save up a bit more for a slightly newer one.
Thumbs up from Sweden.. 🤙
fredrik wardhoff thank you Fredrik for watching and thank you Sweden for bringing these wonderful cameras to the world!
New sub' here Carmine...really enjoying the channel!
Lunar Dawn Images thanks for watching and subscribing!
Hasselblad is a dream for shooters.
GBC4ME you got it buddy!
Oh wow, its Zanta from Kenny vs Spenny!
The results are top notch. Really enjoying your work!
I am inclined to buy a phase one and re-use my 500cm again just like you did. Question for you, how did you get the Hasselblad square frame (with signature indents on left side)?
Kwan Law thanks for watching Kwan. The Phase One P25 is a 22 MP CCD sensor in a 4/3 horizontal format. All the marks and cropping were done in post production.
very nice video. how are you liking the p25 ?
nice quality
i dont see any sync cable ... is it working without the cable?
Henry Ua hey Henry, look closely at 5:55 to see the cable taped down on the left side of the camera. Cheers.
oww u connect to the body.. now i know it works...
@@henrymomoua You don´t need a sync cable with a newer digi back. Just turn it on and it´s in ´stand by mode´
It wakes up when you press the button on the camera.
@@Leffe49 which brand is that? all i know that works without sync cable is the hasselblad cfv series...
@@henrymomoua CFV-50c, as in the small Image. I have a 501cm for it. Have used V-series since 85.
Nex time shoot film.
Ígneo G L why?
V Nice, thank you
Thanks for watching Mohan!
Not sure I like the digital back, seems like you could've got the same results with a regular digital camera.
nice video. whats the name of the song at 1:15
Thanks! Song is "Micro" from the UA-cam music library. Cheers.
Nice report with the people. Image looks digital seems to have lost that filmic look
People are nice in general. All you have to do is ask. The worst thing that can happen is someone says no.
Good video, but the audio is all over the place. Music is way too loud when there's speaking - or the speaking is just too quiet. Plus, I think viewers would learn a lot more from this video if they could hear how you interact with your audience, rather than masking it with music.
Can I suggest that you pre-warn/advice people that you are using a light meter before thrusting it up to their face. I've made exactly the same mistake so now I tell the person and show them what the meter does, etc. But I'm guessing that you do this now anyway.
May I suggest not holding it right in front of their face in the first place? In odd light or a studio you might need to but on the street the light is generally exactly the same a foot either side.
Is that a 50mp back
Kode Williams this is the phase one P 25 back. 22 MP
oh my... not Zanta
Polaroid Papi haha.. yes, he's still out there!
"FP4 Plus" on a color photo, lol
Your too nice. Just shoot them.
Good video.
What that in 3:12
Diky Julianto it’s a hand held light meter from Sekonic that I use with my film cameras.
Great video mate, yeah there is no way you can do more candids with that camera, unless you ready to spend a whole lot on films lol.
Edmund KBoateng thanks Edmund! Yeah, it's slow and film costs money but it's a beautiful thing👍
...cooles video with a fantastic camera... :-)
Carsten Osterwald thanks very much Carsten! Yes, the Hasselblad is a beautiful camera to use. Slows down the process of making pictures.
I shoot at these locations frequently, and have a 500CM as well Carmine, so this was pretty cool to watch. Did you switch to analog at 5:20-There are film edge markings showing FP4 Plus, and it appears to be in the correct 6x6 analog format instead of the cropped digital format, or are these just added for effect? Check out my Instagram, and you’ll see some familiar Toronto places and faces. instagram.com/brentbuchner
Brent Buchner thanks Brent! Shot digital throughout on this day, yes, film edges for effect - I often shoot FP4. Aren't these Hassies great?! I'll check our your page, thanks!👍
Brent Buchner hey Brent, your account is private, can't see your pics.
I can’t figure out how to change the privacy option on my iPad. Just request to follow and I’ll confirm you LOL
last girl! wow she's so beautiful and her lips... such a goddess
martin gomez thanks for watching! Yes, she is quite beautiful and made a lovely portrait subject.
You do not have a really good eye for composition.
It's not something that can be taught, just like perfect pitch. You are either born with it or not.
сначала беспомощнуб бабку снял, потом больного.... стрит -фото....
There's no magic in the digital realm. You may just as well use a fully digital camera unless you put a film in it.
Now put some film in that camera and become a real photographer! :-)
