  • This is my first cookie tin banjo build! This is a cookie tin banjo ukulele made with a flag motif for independence day. Some folks might call it a banjo-ukulele, canjo or banjolele. Either way, it was fun to build and has an interesting sound. If you like to build cigar box guitars, cigar box ukuleles, or cookie tin banjos, I hope you enjoy it!
    I have other cigar box guitar and cigar box ukulele builds you might like to see.

    Thanks for sharing. I have a battle in my head about should I make the lid or bottom be the sound board. Bottom usually wins since I get nice graphics on the back and can more easily work on the insides... good choice. I mostly lead the neck from the corner o f rectangular boxes to get finger space similar to cut away built guitars

    Hi Steve, I like the Ukulele, pretty cool. I haven't built one of those yet but I do have some nice tins I've picked up at a flea market.

      Thanks Michael, I’ve made three instruments with tins now with varying results. I keep learning from each build. By the time I get to over 100 builds like you, I hope to have refined my skills.

    That came out well! Love how you bent the tabs over to attach the neck. I have a tin that’s bigger than that one, might make a 25” scale 3 string or banjo with it.

    • @stevesstrings5243
      @stevesstrings5243  4 роки тому

      Thanks! I learned a lot making it. The neck is chunkier than I like so my future ones I’ll make thinner. I also think larger tins are the way to go. I would like to try to make both a tenor banjo and a 5-string banjo using some larger tins I have acquired.

    It’s interesting to hear about the problems and how you overcame them. I use the same jumbo frets for zero fret nuts.

    • @stevesstrings5243
      @stevesstrings5243  5 років тому +1

      For me, overcoming the problems is half the fun! Since I haven’t made any two the same yet, I always have new problems to deal with.

    • @trackie1957
      @trackie1957 4 роки тому

      I’ve tried jumbo for the zero fret, but have had better results using the same wire for all the frets. The jumbo raises the strings enough to make the notes on the first fret go sharp. Couldn’t get the instrument to sound in tune until I replaced the jumbo with standard

    • @stevesstrings5243
      @stevesstrings5243  4 роки тому

      Good to know! I didn’t have that problem with this one, although I did file shallow grooves for the strings in the zero fret.

    • @trackie1957
      @trackie1957 4 роки тому

      If you think about the rationale behind the zero fret, it should act like any other fret, so the same size should work best

    Thank you for sharing. I plan to start my similar project soon. Do you have any tips which you would have done differently if you were to do it again?

    • @stevesstrings5243
      @stevesstrings5243  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, I would do some things differently. My fretboard on this build was 1/2 in thick rather than the typical 1/4 inch. That was a mistake. Because I used a scarf joint and had an angled headstock it caused a very steep break angle off the nut. I have built a few other cookie tin instruments since I build this one, using the lids as the resonating surface. They turned out well! Be sure to check out those videos as well. I plan to record a video in the next few weeks on how to build these. I figure with Christmas coming, there will be lots of cookie tins out there looking to be turned into instruments. So, be on the lookout for the "how to" video in the near future. Thanks again!

      Hi Jodie, Thanks for your comment. I have built 3 ukuleles so far. One cigar box ukulele and two from tins. I‘ve also built a number of other instruments. I think I’m up to 10 in total.

      My next build is going to be a hornless SG guitar. What I’m doing is the following:
      Step 1. Buy a bolt on neck Epiphone SG
      Step 2. Remove the neck and pick guard
      Step 3. Chop the horns off and sand them down to shape
      Step 4. Paint (just the sides of the guitar) any color you want
      Step 5 Optional. Replace the tuning pegs for locking tuners
      Step 6 Optional. Replace the pickups
      Step 7 Optional. Replace the pick guard or keep the pick guard off
      Step 8 Optional. Replace the knobs
      Step 9 Optional. Add a bigsby

      @@midasmirto7265 You can't just put a violin bridge on a standard banjolele. The fretboard is flat, fretted, does not have a radius, and does not have the appropriate neck back angle. One could be converted but it would take some work! It is a great idea though! You've got me thinking of the possibilities! Thanks!
