Big Tech's Antitrust Hearing: The most important questions
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 вер 2024
- The CEOs of Apple, Google, Facebook, and Amazon testified before congress this week as part of an ongoing investigation into these companies. Some US lawmakers, along with legislators in Europe, are becoming increasingly concerned these companies have violated antitrust laws and are exercising monopoly power to crush smaller competitors.
The hearing was 5 hours long, and see-sawed back and forth between questions about supposed anti-conservative bias in social media, and questions that actually had to do with the market power of these companies, along with one representative asking Sundar Pichai for technical support with his email.
With all that, here are a few of the questions that we thought were the most important to the issues at hand.

The thing is, some of these congresspeople state misleading facts or premises then launch into a “Yes or No question” which answering yes or no to would be incredibly misleading. That’s why context and nuance matters, and some of these discussion ended up being useless
There is a lot of framing in the questions, and a lot of IT illiteracy in congress. So answering with Yes or No only would not be an accurate answer.
The only reason Jeff Bezos seems in control is because he completes his sentences. The reset were interrupted (Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook)
The part where Tim is just trying to explain himself but gets cut when he says “that is correct” is outrageous. Congress literally just wants the company to say yes or no so they can continue with their script. Kind of unfair for these massive companies that actually worked their asses off in order to be at the top.

I’ve Never had face book, never will. 2 family members in cyber security strongly advise against it.
I am with you👍 Never had and never will
Eye opener here on these interviews.
Let me break your bubble. You HAVE facebook, even without knowing it. Facebook builds shadow profiles for people who aren't logged in. Everytime somebody writes your name in a post, everytime somebody puts a photo on facebook with your face in it, everytime friends come over and connect to facebook over your wi-fi.... it takes that image of you and connects it to your name, your location & other various information. Then it uses it to identify you in a sea of anonymous information, further building your shadow profile.
Google, Amazon, Apple, Twitter etc. They all do the same thing. They employ algorithms that can identify you based on only 5-6 key data points in an anonymous database, such as what you buy and at what time, what websites you visit, what you type & how fast you type etc. There is no privacy at this moment.
Same here ! And I am a happy woman
If you have ever had at it at a particular point they will still use you’re data after closing the account and moreover all these big companies communicate the data with each other so if you have an account here or you have searched something on google it will show up on Facebook marketing ads. It is very very messed up and all the big companies do that - Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and others are all the same it’s a big monopoly and they need to be broken up.

Somehow I find it funny how they don't expect companies to copy each other. That is typical practice, I work in product management and one of the first lessons I learned (at least from presentations and online talks) is that you should not be afraid to be a thief.
its not that they dont expect it, but the fact that their uses their unfair advantages to get ahead.
Somehow I find it funny that you find it funny as why the question was even being asked . If the answer is so cut and dry with these companies as to how they get information about competing companies, then why has it been so problematic to get a straight answer . I mean if EVERYBODY should know the answer , (that being it's standard practice based upon your type of criticism) and that the person asking the question is ignorant somehow or duh er uh uh duh. You know if everybody knows , then their answers should be straightforward and easy. The question was asked because they knew already that they wouldn't be truthful in their answers this having it on record when it all plays out . You don't think they had already heard Zuckerberg's to all this before he even got there months prior?
It is very clear that there should be some sort of intervention in companies when it effects every human being on earth...
They intentionally phrase these questions to make them seem to invade our privacy but at the end of the day, it's an algorithm that analyzes your data to give you a personalized web experience, if you don't want this quality of life aspect that can be quite useful you can simply disable it with the settings that the law has forced them to implement, you can also see all of your data.

The questions weren't that difficult, the monopolists are dodging bringing up irrelevancies. If I answer a question and have nothing to hide, I can explain myself clearly in short sharp sentences. Did you sign this document? Well, you see the thing about that is...
@@MaximilianonMars I see your point, but it is better to answer it as why. The question is so open ended.
@@earlofthesea Also good to remember how many employes they speak for. 1 out of a million could have done something theese ceo's can't accont for. and thousends of apps they have never seen themselves. CEO's don't do everything themselves.

All the questions should be answered with "Yes and No"
So that the Congress will be more interested to hear the explanation.

What I don't understand is how we expect the members of this committee to do the needful when this big tech company donate to their political parties which helps in their political career. I could be wrong though
0:10 "Haan, that's correct..."
When the Indian inside you wakes up.
Is it just me or if the answer was not according to their expectation, they were not given a chance to explain?
@Becky Vickers some questions are not meant to be answered only by a yes or a no.
@Becky Vickers you have no understanding of these questions do you?
The Instagram acquisition is pretty straightforward. What is your interpretation of "destroy" mode?

We will be forced to do this as will they, eventually. Most likely in our lifetime. Nuclear war will kill 1/3 of the human population.

Jeff Bezos looks very believable with his facial expression and manner of speech. Looks like he's a very well versed veteran in handling these kinds of conversations.

18:27 that's the most stupid question I've heard in a while. It's like asking what stops a country from launching a nuke on another (bad example maybe). What the hell
It's actually a very good question. They simply could do it, but didn't take this step yet. In an article from 2011 from Steve Jobs on the Entrepreneur, he (quote on quote) said, "if we raise any higher it will be an indicator of the factor that we are building a monopoly". He already knows they are a monopoly, but he was at fear that a step further would be too evident.
