General John F. Kelly - Six seconds and then into eternity.

  • General Kelly spoke to the Gold Star Families of California in 2014 and told the story of two Marines bravery. He tells of how they stood their Post and did their jobs as Marines, and how they stopped the truck that the homicide bomber was driving before he could detonate the 2,000 pounds of explosives meant for the other Marines and Iraqi police who were sleeping in the barracks, close to where the bomb went off.
    Jonathan Yale and Jordan Haerter had only six seconds to engage the driver. Not enough time to think of anything but how to stop the driver of the truck that was trying to get past them and destroy the barracks housing their fellow Marines and the Iraqi Police.
    Please share General Kelly's speech about these brave men and their faithful duty to our nation, to each other and what the true meaning of what it means to serve and sacrifice. They gave their all and now the rest at peace, least we forget their bravery and that this nation has some of the best that stand in the ranks of our armed forces. They stand on the wall every night keeping their families and their fellow Americans safe from those who would destroy all that we are.

    I don't care what General Patton said, General Kelly made me begin to tear up at 4 mins. I could see what was coming. Unlike those two absolute heroes, I had time to think about their ultimate sacrifice. I wore a uniform and never reached a point where I had to follow a routine order to its literal end; and it was probably because some other young men or women in uniform, somewhere else, got that order and took that action for me. Given that General Kelly and his wife had just become Gold Star parents themselves, just before this speech is truly unimaginable.
    I have no idea how he did that and kept it together. I also would not have wanted to be the one to have the duty to ask General Kelly to make that speech.
    I've interviewed many WW2 and Korean veterans and to a man they all say the real heroes are their friends who didn't make it back. Only now do I understand that, 100 percent.
    RIP to all those lost in battle; and lost to despair and suicide after the fact of battle; and for surviving. We truly must look after our young veterans. We ask the young to protect us.
    Why, then, do we so often, ignore them when they hang up their uniforms?
    General Kelly, thank you for your tribute and for your own family’s sacrifice. BH

    It happened exactly as the Iraqis described it.✨
    ‘It took exactly six seconds from when the truck entered the alley until it detonated. You can watch the last six seconds of their young lives.
    It took about a second for the two Marines to separately come to the same conclusion about what was going on once the truck came into their view at the far end of the alley.
    No time to talk it over, or call the sergeant to ask what they should do. Only enough time to take half an instant and think about what the sergeant told them to do only a few minutes before.
    It took maybe another two seconds for them to present their weapons, take aim, and open up. By this time, the truck was halfway through the barriers and gaining speed. Here the recording shows a number of Iraqi police, some of whom had fired their AKs, now scattering like the normal and rational men they were, some running right past the Marines, who had three seconds left to live.
    For about two seconds more, the recording shows the Marines firing their weapons nonstop. The truck’s windshield explodes into shards of glass as their rounds take it apart and tear into the body of the son of a gun trying to get past them to kill their brothers - American and Iraqi.
    Their American and Iraqi brothers, bedded down in the barracks, unaware of the danger at the time could take comfort in the fact, if they had known, that two Marines were on watch and would die before they ran.’
    Yale and Haerter never hesitated.
    By all reports and by the recording, they never stepped back.
    They never even shifted their weight.
    Oorah.✨
    With their feet spread shoulder-width apart, they leaned into the danger, firing as fast as they could.
    They had only one second left to live, and I think they knew.
    The truck explodes. The camera goes blank. Two young men go to their God.
    Six seconds. Not enough time to think about their families, their country, their flag, or about their lives or their deaths, but more than enough time for two very brave young men to do their duty.
    Those are the kind of people who are on watch all over the world tonight for you, and as amazing as this selfless act of sacrifice may seem, it is the norm.✨
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Reflecting today on sacrifices made in wars overseas undertaken with the idea of ultimately keeping US safe and free at home brings to bear a need to recognize the often unnecessary and unfortunate battles we engage in with each other at home and within ourselves. We seem overall to be all too happy to point the finger of blame at the other while all too often overly praising our own all too frequently anemic efforts to honestly seek to create and reconcile what is ours to create and to reconcile.
    It is a shameful way to pay forward the debt of gratitude that we owe not only to both our military personnel abroad, and those who serve at home in various ways, but that we owe to OUR God, ourselves, and each other.
    When things go wrong or when too much noise is made about what has gone wrong as individuals and collectively we seem all too ready to call for yet another appointment or creation of yet another official or official entity occupied or staffed by people most of us will never bother to meet, or without a disingenuous agenda, consider the qualifications, performance, and motivations of, but we won’t call on ourselves to hold ourselves and each other accountable.
    We want problems fixed, we want our economy flowing and thriving, we want our infrastructure to be perfect and perfectly attended to, we want our justice and corrections systems to be just and correct, we want our healthcare systems to be first class, we want our schools to develop the mind in a healthy environment sans political agendas, we want robust and protected recreational and social experiences and opportunities, we want healthy balanced relations between communities of people, and we want healthy balanced relations nations and their citizens. We want it all.
    Indeed we are meant to have it all, but all too often we want someone else to provide for the having without bothering us with the bothersome details of what I takes to have it all. However, individual communities of people must effectively work together to meaningfully contribute to the system of checks and balances required to make and keep US whole in order to keep US a people still worth fighting for.
    It is a general failure to recognize a need for greater hands on involvement within the community and respectful interactions amongst members of the community that creates an imbalance of power and accountability out of which arise corruption and chaos. It is we the collective community, and the average citizen within the community who are failing.
    It is we, the non-officials, the average citizens from individual communities, who need to create and keep regularly scheduled meetings with appointed officials where we make ourselves aware of policy and how policy is or isn’t being actively implemented or enforced.
    It is we, the average citizen, who with a firm sense of civility, integrity, and honor, must become more actively involved in how policy is made and enforced in our communities.
    It is we, the average citizen, who must determine to care a little more intimately about who we are as a society, and about individuals within our communities.
    It is we the ordinary man and the ordinary woman, who must ensure that all concerned have an appropriate and respected voice. We must extend that consideration and that privilege even to, and perhaps especially to, the least of the brethren.
    It is we, the private average citizen, who must determine to be a little less anonymous and a little more known to our neighbors so that we may more effectively realize our mutual interests and settle our collective debts to each other.
    WE, the people, and the individual must determine to do better if we are to remain a people still worth fighting for. No worries. We have a beautiful foundation to work with in this yet bountiful, and free nation.
    Two young men had six seconds to realize and fulfill their duty that day. We have so much more. Surely we each have some time to endeavor to make a difference. Perhaps we have six hours a week or sixty minutes a week days to take some positive action towards improving our communities. Perhaps it is that we take a few moments at a time to challenge ourselves to curtail the speaking of careless words or the taking of careless actions.
    Surely we can do something to make our communities and our world a better place. If it’s just to lift our eyes and pray.✨
    WE can certainly endeavor to do better, and to be better as we remember the sacrifices and celebrate the lives of those fallen in service, as we determine this Memorial Day to pay it forward step by step. If only for six seconds at a time.✨
    Let US be who and what WE are meant to be.
    Come choir of Angels,
    Sing in exultation
    Come in Peace
    Lift every voice
    Bend every knee
    Make a joyful noise
    Come✨🕊✨
    In remembrance of ALL, in honor of YOU, in recognition of ALL the good, good people of the US military, our Iraqi brothers and sisters, our allies and friends around the world, the people of NYC and the NYPD, OUR brothers and sisters in blue everywhere, and for the good, good, people everywhere who serve, served, seek, or sought to serve the greater good of community and Humanity, the US and ALL in whatever way they may or may have all over the world and at home yesteryear, yesterday, today, and everyday without, and sometimes despite hesitation, I salute the sacrifice of, and celebrate the lives of;
    Police Officer Brian Raymond Moore, NYPD MAY 4, 2015
    Police Officer Randolph A. Holder, NYPD OCTOBER 20, 2015
    And of All who have fallen.✨
    Let US pray for the strength of body, mind, and soul to sacrifice the lower aspects of ourselves for Humanity, even unto death, even if but for six seconds at a time.✨
    Let US be willing to die before we run from our collective and individual duties to ourselves, each other, our nation, and OUR God to do and to be better.✨
    May WE each collectively and individually manifest the courage to rise, and rise, and Rise to serve Humanity, to serve ALL, with even a portion of the Grace and the courage manifested by Cpl. Jonathan Tyler Yale, and Lance Cpl. Jordan C. Haerter; and by so very many throughout the world, and throughout history who laid down their lives for Humanity.✨
    It’s by their Grace that we still have an America. It’s why we still have a chance to choose to do better. It’s why we still have a hope for Humanity. It’s why we still have a chance to choose to Love one another. Hallelujah.✨
      Havoc, there's already one that's been made. Do a search for: "The 11th Order" It's a short that was produced and directed by a film student and Marine, Joshua DeFour. Jordan Hearter was in 1/9 The Walking Dead,, which is the unit I served in many years before. That's how I found out about it, was through 1/9. Which gave me the privilege of donating to help fund the production, along with hundreds of others, and it tells their story well.
      Both of the Marines who did their duty and stopped that 2 Ton SVBIED from passing their Entry Control Point in Ramadi, Iraq will never be forgotten. Their Bravery and Courage that day have been written Into the Marine's history.
