Started collecting during the start of the pandemic and the thing that helped me most is to have a spreadsheet for manga that keeps track of both my collection and my spending. Set a hard limit per month on how much manga you can afford and put the rest into savings. Be responsible people. Don't go broke over manga no matter how tempting it is to buy more.
Great Tip! A spreadsheet can help sooooo much. Great way to see everything going on in black and white and keep a budget under control!! Great point!!

Your intro skit was perfect!! It needs to be said more often, that even a single manga volume is considered a collection. Everyone should collect at their own pace and not use anyone else's collection as the basis for what can be considered a collection!! :)

If you really enjoy them I recommend you buy two and read them and after you get done with the first buy another and so on. But ofc I know not everyone has 100 just for manga lol

I started collecting manga about 20 years ago (Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Fushigi Yugi...). I was really into it and shared the hobby with my best friend and some other friends. When she died I stopped reading, I just couldn't read manga without getting sad and depressed because I always had to think of her. So I basically didn't read manga for about ten years. I recently started again and realised how much I missed it. So I started collecting again and watching manga YTer videos (I really love seeing the collections and recommendations of others). :3

I’ve been collecting books and by proxy manga since I was a little kid but I have only recently started consciously collecting manga specifically and I have felt super insecure about the size of my collection.

After rereading Pandora Hearts since I picked up the box set a few months back (not cheaply mind) I am still so grateful to own it, and it's probably my favourite in my collection. The box set helps too since the books and box are beautiful.

Before this I had a single volume of MHA- VOL.11.
It is very important to start with something you love.
I had 2nd thoughts after collecting 9 volumes of OP and thought I am wasting money but my love for one piece pushed me and now I own 78 volumes of one piece among some others like JoJo and MHA.
Uzumaki GYO No longer human (dazai) homunculus goodnight punpun are next.
Very important to start with the stuff you love and just keep at it.
I am going to only buy my absolute favorites for now at least.
Great way to do it is like you said with series you will cherish!
So I just finished buying all of Junji Ito’s English Collection… 23 books… and I’ve read 13 books! Gonna finish those and then buy some more even though I have a Japanese version of Alley from Junji Ito (which comes out end of July in the US) and a Japanese version of Sensor which is my favorite Junji Ito story. You earned a sub. I appreciate you telling us that even owning 1 book means I’m a collector. I found a love for Manga and Japanese culture as a whole. I am now in the process of learning Japanese with the hopes that one day I get to meet the legend Junji Ito and I can speak and understand his native tongue. But even if I don’t I can read his books the way he wrote them and that means a lot to me as well and I can talk to other cool Japanese people in their tongue.

Great video! Just started in November last year and I got a couple of Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man and Tokyo Ghoul. In my country there are very few book stores that feature Mangas, a bit expensive. Those I got out of country but still committed!!!

I just started collecting in December so I needed help to grow my collection

When I first started my collection, I bought manga for the anime that I LOVED (Tokyo Ghoul and Beastars was my first attempt at serious collection.)
Now that I’m branching out more, I buy series similar to the genres I like. So if they don’t have an anime for that series, I’ll collect based on topic and then see if that mangaka has any other work that I like.
It takes time and commitment but it’s so worth it ❤️
Thats good! Then after time you will slowly branch out farther when you like other things and be able to try many different manga genres!

I’ve been collecting since July 2020. And I think I fall in that category of buying more than I can handle as I already have 1000+ volumes 😂. But I like knowing that I have some awesome series waiting for me to pick up and read.

Got into collecting/reading manga last year. My first and also favourite manga series is Slam Dunk. As the anime was not completed I checked out the manga for the first time ever, as before I was anime only watcher. I fell in love with the manga art style and story was well potrayed in manga format. Now I have around 70 volumes of manga in my collection :)

Had been collecting very loosely since middle school when I started with Ultimo. This year however is when I really kicked it into high gear and since March have gotten like 600 volumes. Mangaswap, RS deals, and buying secondhand from eBay, Mercari, etc. really helped.

I really want to start collecting manga and have a big collection and for now I only have 3 volumes (vol 12&13 of aot and vol 8 of sun ken rock) but I ordered 4 volumes last week (vol 1,2&36 of haikyuu and vol 11 of banana fish) and I can't wait for it to come. But the problem is I don't have money to buy manga every month like regularly, I'm just gonna save some money and buy some volumes every 6-7 months. It's gonna take a while for my collection to grow but still it's fun.
Yes the struggle is def real! Manga cost them dollar bills haha. Have to prioritize what you want to spend and what series you want to get so i understand. Saving up and getting some every 6-7 months is a good plan if thats what you can do!

I really like a good all-in-one like Death Note. Do you have any good All-in-one recs that don't feel too cheap?
@@toyshelv I think the fullmetal editions stop at 18 volumes since they have a little more in each one then the singles.
I've been asked what series is my favorite quite a few times however favorite to collect is a very interesting question.
My favorite one in terms of collecting was Vampire Knight. I got volume 1 at the bookstore as a present for graduating from elementary school and began collecting it when it was only 5 volumes long. It was the 6th series I ever began collecting. I bought every volume after vol.5 as they were released over the years including my copy of lmtd ed vol.19 and of course VK Memories.
I agree with a lot of what you said in this video as a "veteran collector".

The manga that I started reading was Fruits Basket. I got most of the volumes at my used bookstore for $5 or less. I did get series that I didn't like when starting out, now when I want to get manga I make a to get / wish list. For the last month I've decided to pick up mangas of series I already have instead of buying newer ones. My last manga haul I got was Attack on Titan Colossal Edition #5, My Hero Academia volume 4, Attack on Titan No Regrets which I already have the hard cover volume. I did pick up one new series and that was the first two volumes of Attack on Titan Before the Fall. I read some of it online and liked it. I had planned on picking it up anyway.
Nice pickups!! Fruits basket is also good! Making a wish list is a good idea. Its good to have a way to look what you want and what your spending.

I have been collecting since I was around 9 and I'm in my early 20s now. I kind of stopped back in HS and picked it back up when I started working in college and have over 800 volumes now. My favorite series to collect currently is twin star exorcists.

i litteraly only have the first volume of at the heart of fukushima💀but Im planing on buying fujimoto's one shots and fire punch later. I already read them and absolutely loved them

I only got into manga last year after coming across some MMVs on UA-cam so I’ve probably read more manga online than physically, as some of the series I read there isn’t any English publication of them as of yet

I started collecting manga during the pandemic, kept on collecting em for 2 straight years; collected mostly vol. 1s and 2s of a few famous series (a decision bad indeed). Then got bored and stopped my collection. In 2022 sold all of em (a decision I regret taking). And now Im starting my collection again from scratch, with just vol.1 of Mashle (haven't given it a read yet so dunno about the story). After watching your vid, I think I'll keep on collecting Mashle for now.

Thank you! I don’t plan on having a huge collection. I want just one shelf of my absolute favourites. The others will be digital. I have only 4 series on my shelf (the biggest series is Komi Can’t Communicate) and one that’s a one shot. I don’t plan on collecting anything else.

I started around a year ago I've finished Tokyo ghoul I started demon slayer and twilight princess and I'm trying to get up to date with tbhk (I'm at vol 10 but I have vol 12-13 on accident) so I need 7 more volumes! I don't have a job but I got all of this manga on my own which is really cool in my opinion I also started BLAME! it's a chunky manga

We say in the business if your a hellsing fan you watched the ovas then read haha cause its WAYYYYYYYYY better then the manga. But if you go manga first please do it justice and watch the anime it will elevate the manga to another level. Boti is amazing and you will love it!

I’m starting to grow my manga collection my first full manga series was the entire Tokyo ghoul set and now I’m building my collection more starting with chainsaw man and junji Ito and I’ve also orderd the new series made by the Tokyo ghouls creator called Choujin X and after that will be a phew more including Jojo

I started buying mange around 2005. It was just by chance that I came across manga and bought two volumes (Our Kingdom, and FAKE) that's what started it all. I think I now have close to 2,000 volumes. It's a lot but I re-read them all and add in new ones.

Started collecting back in april. Have fullmetal alchemist volumes 1 2 6 and 8, beastars volumes 1 2 8 9 and 10, and my hero academia volumes 1 28 and 29. Going to collect more but I'm just focusing on fullmetal alchemist and beastars right now

I’ve been collecting for about 5 years now. I also have the issue of buying new manga when my TBR list is already huge, but my biggest issue is definitely space right now. In another year I really don’t know where I’m going to put new books lol.
I do the same thing haha which makes the TBR a mountain that will never be climbable unless I stop for a long period of time. If space is a issue you could always use risers to double that space!
@@TheMangaSloth I do have risers on most of my shelves already, and I’m still running out of room haha. I’m gonna have to do some rearranging in the near future I think, maybe I can find some space then.

i'm about to finish collecting this series called With the Light: Raising an Autistic Child Manga It was really hard to get because it was it was out of print so I had to find used volumes of it on ebay and amazon by waiting for for good prices. I had to buy it out of order due to the expense of some of the volumes. the last volume I'm waiting on is volume 7.

@@TheMangaSloth its kind of disappointing that this series is out of print because its a way to easily learn about autism since being told through both the perspectives of the mother and her son Hikaru who is the one who has autism.

so um when i try to buy new manga a new series it's always all out (fffffffff)and box sets are too expensive for me because i have like a budget rip,most of the times when i try to find the series i want it's either out or they dont have it
Yeah atm these is a manga boom with some other things going on. So sadly some series are in dire need of reprinting. Same with box sets.

Hey thanks for this video! I just started my collection (yesterday), after randomly stumbling over anime. I watched Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen and Hells Paradise and I also started Demon Slayer, One Piece, Dr Stone and some other titles. I am more a reading person though and was told that mangas tend to be more detailed than the anime (which makes sense, its the same for books and movies) but anyways I eventually stopped watching anime and decided to try manga. I read a bit online and loved it but quickly got annoyed by the fact its only on my phone, small and full of ads and I also like to read books in a physical format rather to the digital one. So I just purchased the complete Jujutsu Kaisen manga since I loved the anime but the manga is like three times as much as the anime (I was thinking about starting with AoT but I just watched the whole anime and know the ending, so I think I will re-read it in a few years and decided to first go with smaller titles I dont (fully) know). So I am enjoying JJK right now and since I dont have THAT much time I think I will be busy with it for a while. I already decided for the second series after: Hells Paradise. And there are so many other mangas I got recommended like Tokyo Ghoul, Dr Stone, Death Note, etc etc. I really am curious aswell about the classic giants everyone is talking about I have no clue of (other than watching a few episodes) like One Piece, Naruto, ... but I am not sure if I will ever have the stamina to purchase them all and read them all in one go (which I would normally prefer), but 100 books is a bit hefty compared to 5-25 books. I may, after finishing one or two shorter stories purchase, say 20 volumes of One Piece for example, read another Manga then and purchase another 20 One Piece and so on. I think thats a good strategy for reading these huge titles.
Hey congrats on starting! Mangas are def more detailed and leave nothing out! Yeah make sure to go at your own pace! It can be overwhelming even with a handful of books sometimes. I like reading 1 a day at least maybe before bed to calm down and not look at phones etc.

On another note, I'm REALLY glad you filmed this because I've been asked by a few people to share my manga collection and I'm always so intimidated to film it because it seems SO many people have more then I do and don't want to get "made fun of" because my collection is hanging out a little over 100 now. I found it encouraging and makes me want to give it serious thought on filming a manga collection video! I started seriously collecting manga probably around two years ago or so? This whole video was VERY good! Thanks for sharing these tips/advice/encouragement with us!
Yeah the beginning skit was done because STILL I see people who only think you got a "real" collection if you have this or that or a "big" amount of volumes which is nonsense!!
Do not be shy!! Show off your manga collection! I like manga thats it lol does not matter if you got 1 or 100 or 100k I watch all videos! Its just those dumb dumbs who want to be mean or put in snarky comments which is just a waste of time!! Go somewhere else haha!

I have a manga/normal book collection I started by putting books on my book shelf and on the bottom shelf I put manga but I only have 1-4 demon slayer + a spin off, 1 komi cant communicate, 1 spy x family, 1 my hero academia, and 1 sailor moon lol

Probably been collecting for almost 3 years now , I got like 200 vols (3in1s counted as 3 volumes , not 1 each) and my favorite series clearly is One Piece , 2nd one is JoJo and 3rd one YuYuHakusho

I love yu yu hakusho and I have the first 2 volumes of it. I was looking to buy the third one (and I buy all my manga off of Amazon cause it’s pretty cheap on there) but it was like 60-100 dollars. It really surprised me since the other volumes were 10 dollars especially the later volumes as well. Still love it and planning to maybe go to a store for it though

my biggest problem is that I don't like buying the single volumes because I feel like there to short I like buying either the 1-3s or thicker reads like Jojo or monster but those cost more so what should I do to combat that.
Well the omnis are cheaper then buying 3 singles. BUT you just need to shop online and never pay retail online they are 20-40% off. then you can buy used to find better deals!
when i first started collecting (like 3 months ago) i bought a jujutsu kaisen volume and a chainsaw man volume but ive realised that i dont want to read jujutsu kaisen and i also want to buy the chainsawman box set instead of collecting singles so how can i get rid of the volumes that i already have how can i sell them or do i just toss them somewhere hidden and buy the boxset? what do i do
You can sell manga online thru local places like craigslist and facebook and also mail themthru those places too. Also places like ebay or r/mangaswap is where I sell my stuff. I had 1-11 of CSM and sold them and bought the box set so it happens all the time.

I agree with you shouldn't impulse buy too much unless you're waiting to finish collecting a completed series before reading it, in that case, it's understandable. For example I impulse bought 2 14 volumes series in one go and then didn't read them for 2 weeks because I was still busy shopping too much.
I have some advice for people collecting long series like one piece. just buy like 1 volume per week. in a year you will have 52 volumes of one piece and will have read tonnes of other amazing manga, after which you can consume that long series you slowly collected like one piece. that is what I did. I collected it on the side. after I had completed give or take 80 series I had 60ish one piece volumes on the side and could enjoy it. hope this helps someone
Yes good advice. Patience will help in collecting anything especially manga! So I like the idea of 1 at a time if you dont want to go the omni or box set way.

I been collecting since 2016, starting with dbz. Now I have 100+ manga at the moment. My favorite series I've been collecting is my hero academia and I have the all and current releases for it. Also, I collect the two spin off Vigilantes and team up mission.
