He wrote this song - as well as a host of others for famous Black R&B, Soul and Jazz artists. He was a multi-instrumentalist, and killer producer (check out what Jon Benet has to say about the time Bobby dropped into one of his early sessions). He toured all over the world (check out his Tokyo concert). You haven't heard of him because he was from your GRANDPARENTS' generation - when we knew how to sing on pitch withOUT Autotune - and how to play Music without electronic devices. He left such a legacy of so many really good songs - and was such a humble man. RIP, Bobby - you will be so incredibly missed.

From wikipedia "Caldwell wanted the song to be the sixth track on the album since he figured his debut album's second track, "My Flame", which featured him playing guitar, would be the hit. However, TK Records felt confident that "What You Won't Do for Love" would be the breakout hit. When it was released to R&B radio, TK Records did their best to hide Caldwell's racial identity, hoping not to alienate their predominantly Black audience. However, when Caldwell began making performances live on stage, demand only increased. "

Honestly, I didn't know who sang this song back in the day. I only saw him all these years later on UA-cam. His name sounds black too. Might as well be Leroy Jenkins.
The thing about sounding black, it doesn't work because everybody's black. I mean it's science. But also, we know most people are mixed somewhere. Whether it's back in the old days in Europe or in the American South, people moved around and made babies.
I used to love watching those shows where they trace famous people's family line. One of the most memorable things for me was when Harry Connick, Jr. found out he wasn't black at all and looked devastated. As I long time fan of his I felt really bad. He grew up in the New Orleans jazz community with all those old guys. I think both of us were sure he'd be Creole somewhere. The other memorable episode was Spike Lee. When I was growing up and Spike Lee was a brand new director he used to talk about how he wanted there to be two separate Americas. One for white people and one for black people. "Separate but equal". My whole family is mixed a bunch of different ways so I wondered where he expected us to go. Anyway like 20+ years later I'm watching one of these shows and he was on. He ends up sitting in a living room with his distant cousin, some old white lady. I was pleased as punch.
As far as I'm concerned anyone who talks about race like it's important is full of hooey.
