In this episode, we explore an absolutely massive steelworks. As soon as we were inside, we discovered this would be a difficult exploration. Workers started approaching openings in the building and we soon realized they were sealing up the building.

Next week: "Previously on The Proper People..." :D
You ever check out the furnace that fed this mill?
It would be droll if 16 year old Carmella Grider could catch her tit on one blade of that razor wire. People should buy up my "Impact" and "Dance of Death" James and Carmella Grider novels on Amazon so I can afford to move out of the desert into a forested area like the one where the steelworks stands.
In frame 11:15 above you where the white columns are you can see Shadows walking past where sunlight is seeing through the roof. Peace & love 💛 💚 💜 💙 👍 ☺ ✌ . Great video
oh look,a new video form "The Proper ASMR"
It seems like security was trying to make as much noise as possible. I bet that's a good nonconfrontational method to scare a lot of explorers away.
Pilot I don’t think it’s explorers they are trying to scare away. It’s most likely scrappers or vandals. But even then they probably were only making that much noise because they are actually meant to be there.
Metal roof make noises. When it's hot outside, metal exspands and make noise.
Coraldiamond 192
They are trying to keep EVERYONE out as it's a huge insurance liability if someone were to get hurt in there. People fall and die all the time in steel mills while they're running, and those are people that know the area. These kids could've very easily ended up in a seriously bad spot.
Given that's a smaller melt shop, I'd say that the roof is around 100' up. The sheeting used on the roofs is thin and not meant to be walked on. If I'm to walk on any roof at the mill, I have to have a harness and be tied off to a lifeline. Hell, we've had floor grating just give out and people fall through.
Ime Priimek
I've been working at a steel mill for more than a decade and no, the roofs don't do that. It was security
I remember I was just walking in the wine section at a walgreens with a friend and I had picked up a bottle of wine to make a joke to her. Immediately after that on the intercom I heard "help requested in the liquor aisle" and i was shook and looked around and there was nobody else there beside me and my friend. Security definitely will use nonconfrontation methods to scare away people.
@@lalagirl12ns lol that much just because of holding wine. jeez. Was this in America?
You guys make the most respectful work on UA-cam when it comes to exploring. Everything about this is so professionally done. Good job, can't wait for the second half
"Professional"
If they didn’t get scared so easy I would say the same but they look like scared little kids on the inside
@@WarzoneVincent have you seen all the other channels? They all aren't perfect like proper people's videos. Get bent.
@@sweatshopkids yes, but it makes the channel a whole lot better. Yes, they may be trespassing, but exploration channels do that: they explore abandoned places, whether or not they have security measures, generally to give people an insight on what abandoned places are like. Get bent and realise that. Otherwise, don't watch youtube. I'm just a kid and i realise that, so why don't you? And you're probably an adult, so if you don't realise that, i'm pretty sure you got beaten by a KID. Like WTF!!!
Yes I love the Proper People.. they produce some awesome videos.
The ‘is the building actually abandoned and are we going to get caught’ videos are way more tense and scary than the ‘this building may or not be haunted’ videos
Ghosts can't arrest you.
@@Gryfflovesmemes Because they don't exist.
Also getting caught means paying fines or doing jail time, and money and time are never things most people have much of these days tbh.

may or may not is the term i think you were looking for
Fascinating to think of all the countless hours spent at work in this place...all the production, the days off, the hirings and firings, the arguments and friendships, the retirements, sick days, accidents, people who have now likely passed away that could have spent most of their working lives here. All now forgotten, a blink of the eye in the grand scheme of things. Empty but full of atmosphere, still.
And the noise and heat must have been incredible!
That perfectly encapsulates my thoughts about a lot of the places they visit.
Very well put, I think that is the reason I like these videos, I think of all the people who have touched that building or area and who may have even lost their lives making the place and making it work.
As quietly as possible.
CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH
CS it’s impossible to be quiet in this place 😅
lmao
Plus the camera would pick up alot of noise that a human 20 feet away wouldnt hear
CS sound carries a long way and big empty spaces and the echos are also amazing
Literally every one of their videos, I don’t know if it’s editing but they walk as loud as they talk!
When the background music started, part of my sleepy mind was like "SHHH!! Turn that off! They'll hear you!"
"They are welding us in we have to ru....whoa look at that coat!!!"
William Diss at first I thought they said goat. This is totally me though, my attention span is shorter than that of a goldfish.
They did that in a few videos they think someone chasing them let’s leave wait to you want to check that out
@@dee-nice0624 I thought he said "goat", too! lol
I can’t imagine how noisy it must have been when in full operation. Incredible!
Near deafening without hearing protection I'd imagine.
Stamping plants are worse than rolling mills from personal experience.
The Dark Phantom that’s not the rolling mill that’s the melt shop and where they spotted the construction workers they were standing on the pouring deck of the caster and it casts the slab down to the ground level into the other bay to be cut down to length and on the cooling table
That department wouldn't be that noisy. Just dirty.....like everywhere in steel mills.
Depending on the type of furnace that they use to melt. Yes it is very noisy, smokey and dusty. I've worked in the steel industry for 7 years and have to get a hearing test every year
Wow at the amount of steel that it takes to make steel!
Ragemutt how did they make the steel that makes the steel to make the steel 😆
IRONic isn't it?
@@gablia2002 yo dawg i heard you like steel so i made some steel to make your steel so you can steel while you steel.
In the scale of things.. That building recycled scrap for over 50 years it paid for itself

as a security guard myself .. I use these videos to help improve my abilities in detecting people within structures. I'm a nice guard though. :D
A security guard at an abandoned installation has probably the best occupation for a serial killer, it would be rare for someone to reach Bundy numbers in this day and age but I reckon a security guard could, even more so a security guard in Russia where serial killing is still in vogue. You should consider it if you've ever thought about dabbling in sociopathy.
ya officer this guy right here

I dont beat the intruders only taze them.
Ur nice guy att. may get u killed. 🤔
Be careful, those french security guards are armed with baguette sticks and they are not afraid to use them.
I wouldn't too much. If it became a fight they'd probably surrender.
And they will give you *PAIN*

They actually have dogs
You two never fail to illustrate the magnitude of these huge factories...I love the way light streams in through the high windows, becoming a dynamic part of the building itself. The amber tarp of light was especially satisfying, and did almost look like an amber wall backlit by the sun. Your sense of the spaces you explore is artistic, well composed, and rendered with an esthetic that brings it to life in a new and exciting way. I appreciate the history you include in your narrative as it lends a depth we can use for further research into the past life of the industrial foundry spaces. I must admit that the loud banging by the workmen was unsettling...thoughts of you sealed in with no safe exit had me worried on your behalf. Your feel for the controls, and the framing of those elements was quite beautiful. As always...you gave us a superior quality, and I thank you once again for doing what you do. 🖤🇨🇦

One of your guys best explorations ever for sure. The sheer size of the building alone is just absurd.
That's nothing in comparison to a rolling mill. I work at a steel mill and the hot strip is over 1/4 mile long and over 100 feet tall. THAT is a big building.
updated intro. i like.
this
With the same old song too
i hope they never change the song, it's prefect and wouldnt be proper people without that song.

Photographically interesting, as always. Your camera movements are fluid, telling a story. And shots like the one at 02:51 with the stray beams of light entering the gloom are simply killing. Kudos all around!
You guys have guts. There's no way I would do this but I'm glad you guys do otherwise I would not know what these places look like today. Great work on the filming location and video and have a great day.
Mike Gaughan this place is incredible. I went there twice and I still marvel at the magnitude of the factory.
Sybren Oerlemans I have to admit the noise was a bit creepy wasn't sure what was making the noise but then the workers were there so it answered what was creating the noise.
Sybren Oerlemans rlly?
I do it every day....
...oh wait. I work at a steel mill. And yes, everything about steel mills is BIG. Videos don't even do justice.
I'll think they're actually just really dumb attention seeking millennials. BUT I'll watch them be idiots without proper protection gear or air sensors. Idiots provide the best entertainment!
Well done. You produce some of the most professional no nonsense videos in the community. Please never stop.
You know it’s a good day when Bright Sun Films and The Proper People both upload new vids within an hour of each other :)
Goddess of Wisdom I thought I was the only one that noticed.
Perfect day for me, would be The Proper People, Bright Sun Films, Dan Bell and Broken Window Theory upload videos in minutes from each other. OMG, I'm watching BSF and Dan Bell is there making a cameo :D :D
Fred Vasquez That sounds amazing.
Dude, right?!
A perfect day indeed. Dan Bell and BSF are good friends, so they often show up in each others videos.
It always gets my heart pumping when there is security around. Y’all stay safe
First time I went there, my first reaction was: ‘whoah, this is a place for the Proper People’. And now you did it! 💪 went there twice. First time 2 hours and then a buddy of mine dislocated his shoulder when he fell. Second time 5 hours, one week before you guys went there. Both of these vids are on my channel, if anyone wants to check them out. Awesome video, guys. Once again.
Sybren Oerlemans so you also know there is no way they could actually get locked in the building

Indeed, there are various ways in or out. But I do understand why they would think so.

@@victormiller6718 It's Belgium ;)
You think that's scary? You should see steel mills in operation. I work at the largest blast furnace in the western hemisphere.
Generally speaking, mills don't get "abandoned" as much as just shut down. There's so much money invested in these places that they are idled (shut down) while a company awaits a new buyer, or the right offer to sell off the equipment, or for scrap prices to reach a good level. There's lots of old departments like that where I work and even us workers technically aren't supposed to go in them. It's a huge insurance liability to the company if someone, like you for example, were to get hurt in there.
The aluminized jackets aren't to protect against the steel. They're to protect from heat. Molten steel goes through those coats like butter.
How many days (or weeks) does the furnace take to reach operating conditions from cold and how long does it operate before the contents have to be dumped? Do they even do that any more? What brand of kiln gun do they use to shoot the slag off of hard to reach places if they even use one? My dad worked at a smallish English iron founders (W. Wilder & Sons) right on the Thames about 10-15 miles south-south-east of Oxford when it was in operation and they were taking chunks of all the surplus landing craft that were stacked up in the scrapyard nearby that were used for the Normandy landings, I found the broken up chunks of a Wilder & Sons lamppost moulding negative in the back yard of a property nearby. It's been turned into flats now and Wilders continued life as a car maintenance garage as Walter Wilders and then at present as a tractor sales and servicing business called Lister Wilder, the station for Wallingford was enormous to feed the malthouses (all gone now as of early 2000, over a millennium of malt production ceased when Paul's malt was demolished and I wish I got a chance to have a look round the inside prior to it's demolition as these fellows would do as my grandmother was friends with a lady who's husband was a manager at the plant but I was just a boy) and breweries (also none left) but it's just a small heritage railway now.
Caleb Howes
As far as a blast furnace goes, the object is to never let it get cold. We run 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We only shut down once every few months for 12-24hrs for larger jobs, or in the case of an emergency. Even with that, we try to keep the furnace hot. After being down 24hrs, we can be back up to full wind (120 cubic meters) in a couple hours. The furnace I work at has 4 tap holes and one is always open at any given time. Drill up (open), block up (close), drill up, block up, etc. There's always a couple minute overlap. The furnace is continuously fed via conveyor belt, and produces 14,000+ tons of iron daily.

Thanks for getting back to me, I didn't think such large operations still existed in the western world but I guess the US still has a pretty healthy industrial sector whereas the majority of the UK's plant was relocated wholesale to India or China to escape the rising coal and coke prices. Another random question however; what's the situation with radioactive materials winding up in scrap feed? From what I've heard it's becoming an increasing problem in some places.
@@CATASTEROID934
Our industrial was dying off but is making a comeback. Little by little. Trump is making it easier on us.
I haven't heard anything about radioactive material.
wow, interesting
I work in an iron foundry and am a big fan of this channel and the way y’all do your stuff, this video was the best one yet.
Just discovered you guys and I have to say I appreciate what you put into these videos. Definitely taking some risks, but places like this are amazing. I also appreciate the sense of composition in many of the shots -- you guys could do this for a living.
You Proper People really obtain some top notch video. Some of these videos where you are walking on precarious positions on catwalks are real nail biters. I can't believe how gutsy you guys are. I'm also impressed how calm you stay when you know security is present. You probably get suggestions all the time but there are some abandoned military barracks, along with military bunkers built into walls of sand in Fort Ord, California. There were more abandoned buildings there, including an abandoned park, movie theatre, church, boiler rooms, barracks, bunkers and miles of unexplored land. You should come check it out before it's bull dozed over. Loving this channel!
Great video guys had me on the edge of my seat. What a huge fantastic building. Thought I was watching a horror movie. Can’t wait until part 2
FABULOUS Zeppelin-esque music @18:19, guys!! Another mind-blowing explore. Can't wait for Part 2.
What if a couple of those sounds were just another group exploring, and both groups are like "oh shit is that a guard?"
simply amazing videos guys
Really sad to see abandoned industry of any kind. I've been around 2 steel plants in operation many years ago- Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point in Baltimore, Maryland, USA and Guest Keen in Cardiff, Wales and they were both impressive.
I used to work in a large truck part warehouse. When the wind blew hard enough the covers for the roof
fans would bang very hard. The banging you are hearing reminds me of noise from my old warehouse
days. Thank you for the walk through the huge building. Ody
Though not familiar with the site, i am familiar with the process. This is a continuous caster. Ladles (The pots) are full of molten steel, degassed, and metallurgy adjusted before being bottom tapped to pour a slab/billet. This cast is then cut to length by torches to be used in other areas of the plant. If this is a flat product mill, these would be hot rolled/cold rolled/coated and annealed before being used in things like automotive body panels, washing machines, or roofing.
If this is a solids plant, they would be cast as rounds or square billets before hot/cold rolling into things like railroad rails, I Beams, seamless pipe, or other structural shapes.
I'm not surprised that this plant was idled in 08/09. That was a hard year on steel, with global overcapacity and the downturn in the economy. My own plant was idled for about 9 months before things recovered enough to get called back to work.
Most of the structure of the building seems to be in good shape. Everything looks rough, but most casters worldwide are in a similar condition. Casting molten steel isn't a clean or pretty process.
Any questions of a steelie, feel free to ask.
Are all plants this large?
I've worked for a steel company and this place looks cleaner than our active ones
This is probably one of your best explores for me. I work as a welder at a steelworks, and to see one this quiet is amazing! Well done!!
Did you guys forget that the cameras might be on the inside as well?
Chase Monroe there’s only one camera inside and they didn’t get to that room 😉
how did you know that?
Plot Twist, Sybren is one of the guards _watching them the whole time._ ;P
Danielle A. Hahahahaha 😅 I’m not a guard, but I did go there twice 😉
Spike Spiegel next time first check my channel and my videos 😅 I have one video of me visiting this place and another one is coming soon. It’s called ‘urbex gone wrong’.
These videos really gives everyone as a community to get together and raise funds to rebuild and restore the historical building in their community before it collapses or gets torn down by developers.
You guys are doing an AMAZING job with these new videos! I am super curious where you get your music or if you make it yourselves? Keep up the great work!
Agree music goes well with footage.
wow guys what a awesome video. it brought back alot of memories for me. my father worked 50 years in a steel mill in pa. i remember the sights and sounds if the mill. thank you guys for bringing back the memories of my dad, he is gone now but i love the video. cant wait for the next one :)
You might want to be careful where you visit in France, if it's just security you'd probably be all right but if you get picked up by the Gendarmerie (military police, they deal with the countryside and a lot of buildings in those kind of areas) then you'll be in for a fun time at the station as a foreigner trespassing.
This isn't France. It's Belgium.
This place is slowly going away. Approx half the building is demolished. Very easy to get into, no security anywhere. There is a very interesting smaller building that you missed, where the metal was tested. It has a laboratory with really interesting equipment, some robotics, etc. If you're in the area, take a look before it's all gone!
Imagine that security worker find this video like "I KNEW I SAW SOMETHING CHARLES"
I grew up in the steel town of Pueblo, Colorado. I always wanted to see inside the mill, which is still operational. Thanks for the great exploration, and glad that you made it out unscathed.
I'd like for them to do a video on times they got caught by security or maybe fell through a floor or something.
You guys need a tv show ! The cliff hanger at the end of this episode is so intense! Would love to see you guys on the air one day !

How did I just discover this channel! So good (Turn those camera record beeps off on your camera, they are gonna get you caught one day ahaha)
you guys are the real deal- insane!!! And skills!!! |You could easily fit in with some of the scouting classes I had way back in the day. Two hints - rubber soles and softer steps plus watching the floor where you are going to step, for grit or debris that will make a loud scrunch noise, and a few basic hand signals to avoid whispers that travel easily. AND ALWAYS keep your leather and nylon gloves, like Mechanix, close at hand. One sliver or wire or glass or even wood that you don't see, or one little spider that you rest your hand on without seeing it, can change your whole day around. Good luck and keep up the great work!
Jesus! that must've been scary! thanks for the awesome content
The cinematic montages with ambient music are so relaxing. I wish I were there, in the mill. So beautiful.
I think the sounds are the security making noise trying to scare you out

Plot twist: The French security guards posted this video.
Hey thanks for documenting the amount and placement of all scrapable steel guys.
13:12 Sounds like someone using a chipping hammer to remove arc welding slag.
I like the fact that you guys are so scared, but those workers are totally oblivious and are probably just normal, harmless people.
There's possibly one thing you guys are forgetting. If you rented a car in Europe, please be aware that they have tracking devices in all of them. They know where you are going and can contact authorities at any time. Rental cars here in the states, especially sports cars also use tracking devices and can not only monitor your locations, they can also monitor your speed in real time. I know from personal experience. Just a heads up y'all.
It is good we have privacy rights in europe :)
Europecar tried this, they had to pay a huge fine breaching privacy!
I think it also has to do with the kind of car people rent. In my case, I had rented a Mustang GT, 4.6L V8. I was driving to a golf course for a round of golf and got a bit heavy footed. Needless to say I was driving well above the posted speed limit and within about 2 mins I received a cell call from the rental company asking if I was ok. I replied yes and they advised me to slow down and drive the posted speed limit. They didn't charge me anything more for the rental when I returned it. By the way, they also knew my location but obviously didn't know where I was going, nor did I specify that information. This happened in Mesquite, Nevada in 2009 and had rented the car out of Phoenix, Az.
True. But I will say that was the first time it happened to me and rather freaked me out knowing they had been monitoring me considering I was in the middle of the desert, lol. By the way, I was doing about 60 mph over the posted speed limit on the Interstate there. No cops though, and I did toe the line after that, lol.
Europe is a big place with many countries, not all do this
That's a very broad and incorrect statement.
Come to Belgium. There are many factories like this, HFB Cockerill (Ougree) Chertal Arcelor mittal, Charleroi Carsid, Cokerie de Anderlues. And MANY MANY MORE.

Great work guys! And I love translating the videos for you. This was crazy, I don't think I've seen you guys in such an active building before. Amazing building!
Heather MsMarvel ; It is a very good service you do to translate for them, making their fine work accessible to many more people. They deserve to have so many more subscribers than they yet have, but it is steadily growing. 🖤🇨🇦
Heather MsMarvel this isn't active I have been in places with steam coming out of pipes, working lifts, pcs running and lights flashing. Hell I have even played with cctv.
Darbians Photography Let me rephrase, no, this isn't an active building, I can see that. However, I can't remember a Proper People video, where they ran into more than just a homeless person, other urban explorers, a scrapper, or security guards. So I call this "active" - for their standard -, because there are literally French workers, working in the building, making alot of noise, and they can be seen on film, while they're in there exploring. I understand the building isn't literally "active".
Tamarra James Thank you so much! And yes, they deserve way more viewers and subscribers! I hope I can help a little with translations, by expanding their viewers who don't understand English well.
This totally reminds me of fallout, especially the music at 8:40

Darbians Photography I think it still does. I went there 2 years ago (have a video of that). But they did destroy A blast furnace. Well, I guess we’ll find out soon because they went there.
Sybren Oerlemans the blast furnace for here was hf6 it's gone.
Darbians Photography could be. It’s been a while since I checked it 😁 I do know they demolished something near the blast furnace but I wasn’t sure it was the furnace itself. Thanks for the information
Sybren Oerlemans definitely gone
I work at a operational steel mill and it is fairly close to the size of this one building. This is an absolutely amazing piece and I thank you!

At the edge of my seat throughout the entire video, hoping you guys didn't get caught. Can't wait for next episode!
Reminds me of Nier Automata
When they first got into the building I thought the same thing-it resembles the tutorial level in the Abandoned Factory.
