Background info:
A nice fellow named Eric from Up-Island (Here on Vancouver Island) sold on to me a wonderful 1:19 scale Roundhouse Engineering Sandy River number 24 locomotive. It came with servos installed for R/C but no receiver. Michael at BC Hobbies installed a receiver and he recommended a great transmitter, as described in the video. Of course, it operates on 2.4 ghz digital remote control.
Receiving this engine is the first time I have ever handled a Roundhouse engine and it is solidly well built! I wound up modding the engine’s tender by custom body mounting a spare USA Trains coupler.
The loco is based on a two-foot Narrow gauge engine that once operated in Maine. Currently, this large scale loco is set up to run on 45 mm gauge track, which is broader than the 2 foot gauge prototype. I can re-gauge the drivers and can order from Roundhouse spare pilot, pony and tender wheels gauged gauged for 32 mm gauge, 16 mm to the foot scale.
The railcars are new to me American Mainline (AML) Durango and Rio Grande in 1:20.3 scale. The caboose is a brass Accucraft Silver Stream Series model. I Recently acquired these from a nice lady named Debby from here on the South Island. They had belonged to her late husband Adrian and they appear not to have been run.
Keith ran his Roundhouse Billy, which is a lovely engine and a treat!
This is large scale model railroading at its finest! These trains are large and have impact.
Happy model railways in any scale/gauge combo of your choice!
Terry
A beatiful Locomotive Sandy River on a nice Gardenrailway 🤗🚂🥰
Thanks for sharing and greatings from Switzerland 🇨🇭
Hi Switzerland! I’m my youth I spend part of a summer in Interlocken (spelling?). I loved it!
@@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi Oh nice, Interlaken is a beatiful Place, but several hours away from our Home.
@@GartenOval I thought the whole country was beautiful and well kept.
That is a gorgeous layout! Love those Roundhouse Praries
Yeah, Keith’s layout is a stunner.
Hello Terry, Love that railway and the train ride. Well done for getting Lord Michael in the cab. The Friar would I think have to be put on a diet should he want to become a driver for this engine! LOL
Lol. Yes. The Friar likes his treats. He may live a life of abstinence, but not from food.
Nice setup. Good to have RC on the grades.
This is my first engine with RC and I had a blast.
She looks gorgeous! Stunning engine Terry enjoy her!
Thanks! ☺️
That's an Awesome Engine and Tender Terry. I really like this one. Looks like a really nice Hobby Store you get to shop at. Nice mods to make it work better.
It is my best engine for sure.
Hi Terry, great locomotives Roundhouse, interesting layout and nice camera work! All the best, Fabrizio
Thanks Fabrizio. If you ever wanted to add your voice to a video let me know.
@@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi OK Terry, have a good new week, cheers
@@fabrizioviscardi40 you too

Nice shots of model garden rail traffic. Good job man👍👍
Thanks! ☺️
Great engines, a wonderful layout and I loved the video.
Thanks! Keith’s railway is amazing. It used to be 25 mins from my house by car. Now it is 4,644 km away. 😔 I do miss going to Keith’s.
You are truly blessed
In more ways than one. I would never be able to justify the cost of this loco new. I got it used for a little less than a third of the cost of new.
I agree, with out the chuff pipe looks better. Very nice engine!!
Thanks Trevor.
Hi Terry fantastic. What an engine.Loving Keiths layout.
Of course Dave was my personall favourite 😁
Hahahaha. Well, Dave was also the only one pouring himself a tea!
Great video, interest, variety and lots of fun with an increasing cast of characters😁. Keith's layout must be the envy of many, me included👍. Your new loco looks and runs awesome, as you'd expect from RH.
Thanks! And thanks for lending your voices. ☺️
cool. was this at a friends house or a club. nice oudoor railway.
My friend Keith’s garden railway. About 30 mins from my house.
Neat engine. Pretty railroad. I don’t like truck mounted couplers either. Something about the sound of these little engines attracts me to the hobby; maybe subconsciously reminds me of playing with my brothers and our Mamods. Chuff pipes kind of ruin that sound, so I don’t really love them.
Over the winter I will start the process to rationalize all my rolling stock with kadee couplers. Right now there are various maker’s couplers. While technically they all mate, some mate only once your fiddle them with your fingers and hold your tongue a certain way.
Mamod makes some beat little engines these days. The Mamod Mk. 3 is a great little runner in the original tradition, only much better.
Did you convert those trains to RC or were they always RC?
This particular loco (Sandy River 24) comes either manually operated or with RC fitted. Mine came RC fitted but the pervious owner kept the receiver. So I bought a receiver/transmitter package and had it set up.
My American Main Line by Accucraft USRA 0-6-0 was not offered with RC so that was a puzzle to figure out how to fit RC. The engine was not designed with RC in mind and so fitting it was a challenge. I had to build a waterproof box inside the tender for the batteries, receiver and on/off switch. Unlike the Sandy River where the butane tank is beside the rear of the boiler and as the boiler warms so too does the butane tank (particularly important in cooler weather) the large butane tank in the tender of the USRA 0-6-0 is designed to sit in a bath of hot tap water to start. But that area was the only place to put the batteries and receiver.
Can you Notch up on those locomotives?
Ack! Sorry I missed this question!! What do you mean?
@@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi No worries
Notching up is moving the raduis rod closer to the middle of the expansion link to increase speed and efficiency
@@laaity ha! Nope. This loco has a simplified Walschaerts valve gear. Forward and reverse only. You can get a little benefit adjusting the gear but not much.
@@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi I think it's because the combination lever and raduis rod meets at the valve spindel
@@laaity that’s right. That’s just for looks.
Why couldn’t you just use a transformer? Why RC?
The Roundhouse Engineering Sandy River 24 and Accucraft USRA 0-6-0 are real steam engines. I don’t have power in my track.
