  • This video showcases my brand new 32 mm gauge custom Roundhouse Engineering Bertie. The engine is decorated as a War Department locomotive by Roundhouse. It pulls a Jennie tender, which carries a radio control receiver and batteries. Other custom features include a water sight glass and refill Goodall valve system.
In this video I show how to fill the gas, water, and compound steam lubricating oil. Then I run this engine for the very first time on my Pencross Railway of Vancouver Island.

Resistance is futile. Bwa ha ha haaa. However, a live steam engine true to your fine 1:20.3 scale would be very expensive. Accucraft have appropriate engines but wow, pricey.

@@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi Yes, Accucraft sent C-25s out just before Christmas I think. They are rather nice, but near 5 grand I think. As I ideally would like a K-36 or K-37, I guess they'd be towards the 6 or 7 thousand mark,... that's if they decide to do them.

A great looking train with such an interesting collection of wagons that all go so well together. Oh, and the liquid sunshine added to the occasion as well LOL! RH suggested a 10 hour run in period for my Katie (Percy). It ran so smoothly from the start so I didn't think it would get any better, but it has improved with time. Mine will pull a rake of wagons hauling granite in the order of 30lbs! I think I'm correct in saying both our locos have the same cylinders so once it's done a few runs, load it up with rocks and listen to beautiful chuffing music.

You can’t replace the fun quirkiness of the Mamod Brunel and the fact it has its oddnesses. But for near the same price the basic Bertie is amazing. As I mentioned I decided to get it over the Mamod Sterling or Quarry because Roundhouse will add a water sight glass. On the detailed invoice the cost of the sight glass and extra labour to add it was less than I expected! Of course, adding a Jennie tender with RC drove the price up. But still a bargain in my opinion (well, ‘bargain’ in the live steam world). And THANKS for lending your voice to the video!!

I have to say that after some running in that is now running brilliantly, it was a bit hit and miss to begin with but now gives really nice running at slow speeds, think I'll have to get the servo tender for it after seeing this 👍

@@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi An old SL1 I believe. It was heavily upgraded by the previous owner. New cylinders, Goodall valve, lubricator, uprated safety valve, repaint, 3D printed batter/receiver box (which I removed and added to a custom tender), and cab regulator. All for the price of an unmodified MSS kit. Most of the time after upgrading a Mamod fully you end up paying the price of a nicer locomotive from accucraft or roundhouse. However I was lucky.

I made it. The track started out as old Aristocraft Aluminum rail track. The switch point was a challenge but I made it work.
