Interesting fact: The bus was never meant to be damaged like this. It was accidentally damaged whilst it was in transit in Dubai. Russell T Davies had to change the script to explain why.
Yea, I fell asleep on a bus once and went way beyond the stop I was supposed to get off at and ended like 2 towns further up, but traveling to another planet by bus has yet to happen to me as well.
This is a brilliant episode, one that really captures a lot of what makes Doctor Who great and special. Something iconically British in somewhere alien, in this case a red double-decker on a desert planet; aliens both friendly and hostile; the Doctor being heroic; a confident companion; and despite being both an alien and an extraordinary man the Doctor still takes time to celebrate normal people. Love it.
Can we just take a moment to think about how this was actually filmed in Dubai. That means that David actually had to wear a full suit, heavy trench coat and loads of hair product IN THE DESERT! That poor poor man :(
@@johnpicklehead1354 this comment didn't age well did it? Poor Christopher was going through a lot during filming. I'm glad he can embrace it more now.
I love that he is regarded as THE authority and a genius throughout the episode. It is rare the Doctor is given the respect and acknowledgement he deserves.
I remember this episode for the bus being damaged when they shipped to where they were shooting the desert scenes causing panic amongst the staff. Then someone pointed out that inter dimensional wormholes could have caused the damage and it seems perfectly natural.
I love how the bus driver just keeps going. Its clear that they are trying to pull over the bus but he's just like "Screw them! I've got a schedule to keep to."
That bus is proper old school. I used to take it to school. They're from a time when London Transport were going through a phase of switching to single door buses. I remember drivers used to open them before they stopped and close them after they'd left the stop, meaning you could almost jump on and off like a Routemaster ... Which came in handy when you almost miss the bus.
thomassaurus More classic Who coming in the following weeks, as well as more videos from the 50th Celebration. Some of our fans have missed this episode as it's not as widely available as the numbered series and we try to have something for everyone :-)
It’s hard to believe that this was my first episode of Doctor Who. I was around nine maybe ten when this ep came out. Woke up one night cuz I couldn’t sleep, came downstairs hearing the tv playing and found my older brother watching this.
