I know 100% cotton paper used to be free in the Victorian Era because they made it from recycled clothing. If they could get it for free there is no reason why we should have to pay so much for it. That's what I think.
To be honest, I think the cost of good paper here in Japan is part reason why my watercolor skills haven't improved much. Every time I am doodling some art, I can't stop thinking that this will cost me $4 a sheet. It's hard to be spontaneous and loose while worrying about the cost.
@Monke sama depends on what you mean by doodling. If you talk about sketches, in f.i. ink or graphite, then yes it's a fine method, I do this myself. But if, as I think Tony meant, you are talking about doodling directly with wc paint, i.e. spontaneously painting this off course is not possible.
If you want good watercolour paper that is reasonable priced, check out the spiral bound Strathmore Visual watercolour journals. Those are quite good even though they are not made with cotton.
I wonder about the rice paper they use for sumi? Would that be any less expensive for just playing around? Also don't forget about buying imperial size sheets and cutting them yourself - much cheaper.
The hot press version is the Lightfast Paper (also 100% cotton 300gsm). I bought and tested out both pads, and the Lightfast paper is really lovely, especially with coloured pencils! As with the Inktense paper, it's super expensive, lol.
I hadn't looked at how much this paper costs here in Finland before and I was a bit shocked to find that an 23×30,5 cm pad (20 sheets) can cost somewhere between 49.95€ and 61.90€. This video got me really interested to try this paper, but...I think I will stick to my bit "cheaper" papers for now. 😊
Thanks for that review! The more products I use from Derwent, the more favorable I am to them as a company. They have really been top in my book for producing relatively affordable and top notch art supplies. Their Graphitint pencils are amazing!
Inktense watercolour pencils are hella VIBRANT. I keep seeing them advertised on various websites I visit, and I'm very interested in them at some point (when I can organize my desk better hahahah)
Just a note to be careful when purchasing because Derwent makes also a watercolor paper that is archival but not 100% cotton whereas the Inktense paper is 100% cotton. The price difference is about $7-9 per pad.
Beautiful artwork! I really enjoyed watching the watercolours move on the paper - I'm not sure why but the texture and the off white colour of this paper is really pleasing to my eyes.
Teoh, thank you for another amazing review, and drawing/painting!! Oh my gosh you are so incredibly talented! I have used your link to purchase the paper because you have convinced me to give it a try. Once again, thank you for everything you do for us 👏❤️🇨🇦
Thank you for recommending materials and for teaching, may your generosity and kindness be returned to you and may you be blessed in your life. ❤️❤️😍😍🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😊
This stuff is more expensive than Lanaquarelle in blocks!!! And Lanaquarelle is AWESOME. It does seem like it works great with the Inktense pencils, but I have a hard time thinking this could be worth the price.
4:37 some of the pencil marks are permanent. For example the blue pencil. Whichever coldpress paper you use. If you pencil marks are unwanted, you should first put the pigment from the pencil to a palette, masking tap is perfect for that, and wet the paint there.
Looks great! Have you tried the reverse side with same ink & paint to see if it performs same? I would hope the sizing is throughout if priced similar to Arches.
Hi Teoh - thanks for the great review. I’m from the UK and the paper is expensive here too (about $53 SGD) but it looks like great quality. Would be interested in trying some when I run out of paper. All the best, Matt.
@@teohyc Yes I know - sometimes it feels like you’re being ripped off! Especially considering the company is based in the UK and it’s cheaper to buy larger Arches paper manufactured in France!
1) Derwent Intense has watercolor-style sets with their product in pans. I would like to try these. 2) On the Blick website I checked the price of Derwent paper against Arches paper. The prices are comparable. Thank you for all you do.
I'm french, which means I'm both I'm in the country that produce Arches and next to the one where Derwent is. I did a quick price comparison, Arches is cheaper than Derwent here and I don't think the Inktense one is worth 40€ (the Derwent shop price). It's even more expensive if I follow your link. I'm sure it must be so pricy in Singapore ...
I'm in the USA and Arches is significantly cheaper than the Derwent here as well. In fact Arches is not very expensive here compared to many other papers.
There is actually hot pressed version, only, very confusingly, it's called LIghtfast Paper, suggesting it's made to be used with Lightfast pencils. But it's 300gsm, 100% cotton paper and Derwent claims it works with watercolour, too.
I don't think Derwent opened their own paper plant, and learned to produce artist quality paper, just for this new product line. So I wonder who actually makes this excellent paper?
Hi Teoh Yi Chie. I’ve been following your channel for a long time and appreciate the content you give. However there’s one area I’ve never seen you do a video on and that’s ERASERS. Surely you use erasers, right? It would be nice to see what erasers you recommend when using watercolor paper, whether all erasers work the same and what are the pitfalls of using erasers when doing on location, etc. Would really like to see this. Thanks.
Thank you Teoh :) I like the paper illustrative ability for ink drawing and watercolor , after watching your video I've decided it will be a good addition to my supplies :) * Loved your sketch and how you bring it to life with watercolor :)
I wish I could get affordable 100% cotton paper. Most paper I get only contains a small portion of cotton... but the cheap paper is so terrible for watercolor.
EDIT: 😮 $48 usd for TEN (10) SHEETS of 7x10. i no longer feel like i have to try it oh no, i was hoping you’d hate it 😭 now i have to buy it. shame on you 🥰
Inktense paper is really for ink and pen. As Inktense watercolours, are actually not watercolours at all but ink, this is why this paper is good for ink and not really watercolour.

Super expensive here in the US too! Just checked Amazon, it’s $14.33 for A5 size and $23.07 A4 size, 12 sheets!!!
Gorgeous painting! I love how the sky turned out. I always overdo that. It seems like a very nice paper.

5:53 that moment you realize that you forgot that an area was still wet ;-)
I do that all the time because I'm impatient. It's easier when I work outdoors because the paint dries faster in hot weather.

Their pricing is crazy. Not sure why anyone will want to pick this up in an art shop when it's placed beside other well known brands.

Nice review and a commend for youtube. I realy love the paiting. I have to go out to paint again.
And what did you think of the M. Graham watercolors? To the best of my knowledge this was the first time painting a picture with their watercolors.
M Graham is good quality watercolour, comparable to other well known brands. I used them here too ua-cam.com/video/qe3cCFp6yhs/v-deo.html
Wow teoh....your getting really good at cars!
Thank you! I prefer hot press but this this paper looks tempting.
Another great video! Interesting to see how this paper performs. Will you be making a video using the inktense pencils too?
Inktense pencils and other pencils are best used on smoother paper, unless you are looking for the dry stroke effect
I'll keep an eye out if that paper ever goes on sale 😄

Erasers work alright on this paper. But I don’t recommend drawing hard in because it will be difficult to erase the pencils from the rough texture
@Teoh Yi Chie : You've used both Casaneo and Versatil in your videos. Which do you prefer as being closer to the Kolinsky sable?
