So technically luke saved yoda from succumbing to the dark side of the force remember a jedi that gives into their emotion start to become that of the sith. Sadness from failure is one of the many paths that can lead one to the dark side take darth vader for example the lost of his family drove him to the dark side.

How could things have gotten worse, when the Sith already controlled the entire galaxy? The worst case scenario would be Luke turning to the dark side, killing Darth Vader, and becoming Sidious' new apprentice. That doesn't really change the status quo compared to doing nothing for 20 years. If you feel guilty about failing the galaxy, you should at least try to atone by making it a better place.
