I've just spent 10k on a blue 5 door mk5 one. Theres a massive selection of 2.0 turbo alternatives for the same price probably alot quicker too. But none of them have character like the R32.
Owning a BDB 3.2 VR6 I must say they sound phenomenal, the speed is good, and pickup is good, but they’re not as fast as people think, they just sound mega.
BWTV, the Mk4 R32 has an actuator valve on the exhaust that opens up at 45 mph, letting you hear the full volume of the exhaust. This actuator can be modded so that it remains open from idle.
@@stevesje71 partially true. It would open at 3500 rpm (like you stated), but the car had to be going faster than 45 mph ( so it would not open in first gear as it topped out at 30 mph). When car went back under 45 mph it would close. There are several ways to disable the valve so that it stays open. One simple method was fitting a one way valve to the black rubber hose. The exhaust pressure opens the actuator, and the one way valve prevents the pressure from escaping, keeping the valve open. This method is easily reversed too.
Hi mate. It’s fully true, it’s operated by inlet manifold vacuum and will be closed at idle and open at around 3500rpm depending on throttle position which will vary the vacuum. It will open in 1st gear depending on throttle position and engine RPM combined to create manifold vacuum. Vacuum is at maximum with engine idle
@@stevesje71 my R32 would open that actuator when it reached 3500rpm and 45 mph. It would open at WOT or light throttle. I don't know if you are in the U.S. so they may have programmed the actuator to activate independent of the car's velocity, mine opened at 3500rpm and 45 mph.
Hi buddy....Always loved the MK4 R32's..& the MK4 25th Anniversary..& 2.8 V6 4 Motions..(with the heated black leather Recaros naturally:)) This particular R32 Needs a Powerflow-Straight-Through Custom Exhaust/HPFP/Forge Carbon Twintake/KW's all round....I had a 25th Anniversary a few years back..took me many years of setbacks to get one....Identical to the R32's except (IMO) the Anni had the Black LeMans cloth trim with the red recaro logo and red stitching..and black roof lining & pillars....These puppies are still as modern and as fresh a they were 15/18 yrs ago..I remember my mate getting a graphite grey 150bhp mk4 turbo..and it was mint..then he got an Anni..and thats when all that was in my head was mk4 GTI's/V6's/R32's etc....It took a long time to realise there's tons of choice out there....
Just Sum Guy the forge intakes actually loose BHP, stock air filter with updated panel filter get better results. I have lucifer manifolds/downpipes to go on and il go for a non res centre/rear and sports cat, B16s all round, front and rear ARBs and il renew all the subframe, drop links, tie arms ect

The VR6 sounds good but the car drives terrible compared to the newer ones and it doesn't feel like it's put together as good as the newers ones either to me.
I’ve got the manifolds/downpipes and decat on my 4mo at the moment. Just need the time to swap them over, think il go non res centre/rear and sports cat, il keep the decat for weekends😂il more than likely go to stealth or rtech mate
Love it, think the MK4 is one of the best looking Golfs. I’m 18 and just bought the 2.slow MK4 which is good enough for me for now, it’s also quite responsive and will be quite reliable being N/a.honestly love the R32. Youre never going to loose money on it either other than the fuel and maybe maintance at this age (haldex servicing, timing chain ect..) I’d have one in a heartbeat if my wallet would allow..
They are great cars. If you aren't worried about looks you could get the audi A3 or TT as some came with the same engine. Only thing which stops me is money plus looking at the stats it is a little expensive to run for the performance. Road tax when I check is £555 which is a lot and will increase as the government like to do people over and is thirsty. Only thing that would want me to get one is the sound 👌

Question is, which is quicker, this stock r32 or your 1.8t. From a fellow 1.8t owner and do you ever get much more than 25mpg cos I don't and it's not mapped yet but has all the stage 2 mods ready for map. Cheers
With the r32 it's diffrent the big boy powers starts at 5 thoe revs you have to under stand it's heavy and none turbod I think there the 2 things vw fucked up with it me mate has a st focus 12 plate and are mk 5 can keep with th that both stock like... great vid keep up the content

Had a small involvement with a factory backed VW racing team running the mk 4 r32 In 🇦🇺, albeit short lived, suffice to say that the thing went like a cut snake!

Mk4 R32 suspension setup is vastly different to the gti, as it is also awd. You’d know that if you owned one. Anyway, I far preferred my mk4 R32 over both of my mk5’s. The build quality and overall driving feel was far superior imo.
The main reason it’s not that fast I would imagine is because the car has done 123000 miles? Not exactly a mint example of an r32. I haven’t driven an r32 but I have briefly driven an Audi A3 3.2 Quattro and that was a nice car. But that had 247 bhp the same as the mk5 r32. A modified focus st would be my choice. Just seen a 2006 red focus st on auto trader with 60000 miles in vgc for £5000. Put £2000 in for mods , remap air filter exhaust and suspension and your sorted.
If you want to pay 9+ for a under 100K mileage on a Mk4 be my guest😂milage doesn’t mean anything compared to history, my old 4Mo was on 195K. Rebuilt and renewed in 2014 good as new. Also, this is my car in the video...

You have to be a real VW fanboy or have very little experience of driving performance cars from other manufacturers to think this is a good car. The mk4 Golf is a bloated pudding in all of its guises. The V6 does sound nice and it is a good looking car but the steering of the mk4 lets it down beyond redemption.

It’s not dependent on speed. It’s RPM of the engine and works on manifold vacuum pressure

The flat spot in the revs was a problem way back when, vw released a map to fix it and it made a few more hp. But a proper map would be better 😃

I think the boaty feel you're describing is due to the mk5 have assisted steering /electric where the mk4 doesn't
