- We have always wanted a Volkswagen R32! Lucky for us this cheap $3,000 MKV R32 popped up on Facebook at just the right time! Also lucky for us, @JamiesGarage1 Happened to be near where the seller was located! We bought this car and took it to Jamie's shop to get it inspected, then attempted to drive it 600 miles home!

I had an MkV GTi , it had 230k last time I spoke to the guy I sold it to.
As a retired VW/Audi tech with 47 years experience I must say that you were a very brave man.
Well. That sounds like that you should never buy a VW or an Audi or other of their EU brands like Skoda or Seat.
What I meant it was risky because of the condition and sounds of the car. I drive a a 20 year old Golf and has been a good reliable car and would drive it anywhere.@@Vixen1525
Are they genuinely unreliable or is it on par with Japanese brands?
Not as reliable as Japanese but not that bad. I live in a salt belt so German cars hold up better than Japanese.@@diobrando9324
@@diobrando9324Honda and Toyota have great reliability with less maintenance. VW and Audi have good reliability with more maintenance. Chevy has ok reliability with a TON of maintenance

As an original owner of a MK4 r32 , its sad to see how people neglect these cars especially considering how rare they are in North America. This car is a lemon no doubt.
It always feels like these cars start having problems that people ignore until they pile up into something that can't be handled. That took some bravery to drive it home! I'm interested to see what you do with it.
This car certainly also looks like it has many crappy parts along with shoddy work too.
Yep proper maintenance is lost among the general population. Last year I bought a mk5 with 130k miles. Original spark plugs. Talking like over a quarter inch gap. Still playing catch up with early oil changes but somehow it doesn’t burn oil. Probably only had like 3 oil changes before I got it. The guy who bought in at auction said he dropped like $1000 in parts to get it road worthy.
My exact experience with my 2003 530i. So much sludge in the oil pan, original plugs, even had to do rod bearings cause the were so badly worn from the lack of oil changes. @@Emoralis

It was said in the first few minutes, it was his daily, he did the big chain service then the gearbox died and it got too expensive.

And I thought my hour and a half drive in the pouring rain from Chattanooga to north of Atlanta in my just purchased sight unseen $1100 MK4 with bad O2 sensors/cat (running VERY rich) was scary. This was a few years ago now, but it still serves as a vivid reminder of what VW life is all about..🤣
Holy cow and here I thought my MK5 was bad. I'm currently at 210000 miles and though it's got a coolant leak, the transmission works well enough to drive on a daily but PRNDS does flash then goes away. Somehow no check engine light though. Obviously, it's had its fair share of mechanical issues but these cars are just something special. This car needs some love and affection and it can be a great addition. Can't wait to see more!
Prnds flashing could mean the Mechatronics might be toasted mine had it and got worse over time till one day the tranny cooked
like the other guy said, its probs mechatronics is bad... good luck finding one though
Everyone knows transmission works via spiders running inside it, that deleted spider was the main component.

As someone who owns a mk6 gti with a dsg that was behaving exactly like this one right before it stopped shifting into ANY gear, this video was highly entertaining. I'm also curious to see what the insides look like if you get it apart, I had my tranny swapped for a used one and never got the chance to do a teardown.

While I'm kind of hoping for a manual conversion, I think that the real adversity is more likely to come from rehabbing it and just making it reliable again.
Also hoping for a manual conversion. VW goofed by omitting the third pedal from this car.

Looks like a deal to me! Fun project car. My daughter paid more for a ragged out TT that is worth a lot less lol. She would have much preferred that car had we found it, though DSG is not preferred.

7:50 reminds me of my first car I ever bought myself when I was 18 (I'm 23). It was a 1995 Nissan 300zx, and it had no AC. I was on a date with my girlfriend and the Georgia rain started pouring down. It was dark outside, the windows were fogging up, my t-tops were leaking on me from the rain, and my girlfriend was the indoor windshield wipers keeping me able to see while I drove. Miss that car, but thankfully I am engaged to that girl now, now I have a project golf getting a transmission right now but thankfully it has AC lmao
The rain and window fogging gave me PTSD over my Corrado I sold about ten years ago. That would have been a fun "can I drive it hundreds of miles home" video for someone to make.

I wasn't a fan of the MKV until I purchased one a few years back. Now I can't let it go.

I’m excited for this. I just recently had a chance to buy one for cheap.
Seller originally told me “it needs a diff” no biggie.
Then come to find out, the motor and trans is already pulled. And it needs a front diff not a rear.
I hard passed on it.

Man I'd love to have a clean MK5. I had an 02 VR6 and loved that car. Was the 3rd owner and spent so much money fixing things I found and returning things back to stock. A clean MK5 that's STOCK (I'll take a nice, non-raspy aftermarket exhaust too) would be great for a nice weekend mountain cruiser.
This poor .:R32. Owner did not deserve it. Trans sounds like it's been driven without fluid (Don't ask me how I know. I was 16. Mistakes were made). So many .:Rs that found the wrong owners 😭
Nothing to worry about, that's a huntsman spider. They don't usually bite.
They only made 500 red r32s in the United States so that's awesome. I just got a white one number 4287/5000. It's also a basket case. I'm very close to getting it all fixed up. I also used to own number 3967/5000 in blue and that car was amazing.

I have a Golf MK4 since it came out and about two weeks ago it started doing the same transmission noises when you decelerated on 2nd gear. Then, it started making a loud buzzing sound as if it had a supercharger on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear respectively. Eventually, she shat all her interiors inside herself, and I had it swapped for another manual transmission and a new clutch. 21 more years//265k miles of beating this *bulletproof snail* to its absolute death.
That spider was probably sitting on Paul's headrest enjoying the ride of an R32 before they reached the shop 😂

Very entertaining upload and best of all I learnt that the PRNDS flashing is actually a problem because I’ve actually got it on my seat Leon and it drives absolutely fine so I didn’t know it was a thing but now I can actually get a problem or an accident, waiting to happen fixed before anything does happen 😂 great content

Driving a sketchy car several hundred miles home is an amazing rush. It almost makes me want to buy some POS annually as my vacation.
re blown fuse, put a light bulb across the fuse, then go to end of circuit and keep disconnecting stuff and wires till the light goes out, the item before it was the issue I read.
I would love to see this beauty restored! Those wheels as rough as they are they look good, just imagine them restored as well.

Im assuming you already know, but the rear lights arent the originals either and I'm also well aware that is probably the least of your worries ha makes me miss my old R32, although when i had it i really didnt like it that much, lovely car just expenisve to run and not overly quick

Did you check the trans fluid level? You should keep a C02 fire extinguisher to cool down the trans
The messed up weather stripping and paint scraping on the drivers side door is classic evidence of an amateur attempt to unlock the car using a coat hanger or other wire.
I spent 15 years as an automotive locksmith and that is exactly what happens when keys are locked in a car or the car isn’t openable from the outside and an amateur tries to gain access. Someone thinks that the time spent and damage they do to the car is cheaper than paying a good locksmith $75-100 to open the car properly.
Reminds me of my 1998 Prelude with the 4-speed auto... trans slipped so bad I had to drive it in manual mode just to make it work.
I'm having a similar issue with my old mk5 jetta. I've had the PRNDS lights come on and it slips when the car has been driving a while but there's an override you can do with a pedal sequence. I'd like to see what's up with the transmission because they're likely very similar so I can see how bad of news it is that I'm experiencing this. Thanks DAP!
I’ve been on the look out for a blown up trans R32 MKV for years. The DSG is just not a trans that should’ve came with a limited model like this.
A six speed swapped MKV R32 is probably the best hot hatch during that generation, and I would argue is a better car than the Golf R.

I bought one in 2021 with plenty of issues, but got it cheap only now have I finally got the mechanicals fine, lucky for me the timing chain is fine but basically everything else wasn't, but now with regular maintenance the car should be fine for another 10 years.
May be wrong but in my ownership of my MK5 GTI harsh shifts and not being able to determine the gear/taking really long to engage the clutch or reverse is a mechatronics unit failure. From factory was an issue that they would overheat and become faulty so Volkswagen opened a bulletin for 10 yrs or 100,000 to have it replaced for free if that helps but considering how neglected this car is and how much it costs to replace most ppl just replace the transmission altogether- hope this helps!

I was going to take the bumper out of the car and let the spider outside, until they chased it into the car!
I bought one as well. I ended up replacing the engine, trans, front and rear suspension. It’s basically a new car again. But now it’s under me and nothing gets ignored. 😂
I think spider babies look like “dancing cinnamon.” It doesn’t help me shake the itchy feeling off.
i always wonder how long these cars would last with Ethusiast level maintainance, but driven everyday! I see them with 200 to 300 thousand mile, and even though they have there issues, they just seem to keep going. I have been in a Taxi/cab (audi a4) with 230,000 on the clock. It felt like new.
lol grown ass men with working vehicles at home driving sketchy golfs hundreds of miles to restore them back to the life is the best. I'm here for the journey well done lads.
