      @@ErikaLodes I know its sad. I have CRIED over plants that we had to get rid of due to construction and no where to safely put them. I feel like they are little people and can feel pain. I LOVE my plants so much!! but even with me wanting them so much sometimes it doesn't work out and I have to move on.

    I had massive struggles with both my pilea and watermelon peperomia and what finally worked was the same for both - move them to smaller terracotta pots then move into bright indirect light (a tiny bit of direct morning sun is just fine) then start bottom watering to promote stronger and faster root growth. I water only when they’re completely dry and they have both made huge improvements. Tons of new growth! Good luck!

      The NLKing question....does your watermelon peperomia have leaf deformities, scratches, and pitting on the leaves themselves? This is my only difficult plant and it looks horrible 😢 everyone else I know with this plant has the same problems

    • @thenlking5022
      @thenlking5022 5 років тому +3

      Sarah Sarah a couple leaves do have deformities and some black marks on the backs of them. Mine also looks thin because I cut off the most unhealthy leaves and kept one small but healthy stem with about six leaves. I’m propagating other leaves and will plant them all back together once they’re ready to make one large plant again. The additional sun and less water it’s getting had made all the difference in its health, though.

    Erika, the one thing all of the plants you are struggling with have in common is that they enjoy a much more sandy and looser growing medium while getting slightly dry between waterings. As best as I can see from the video your mix is holding way too much water and is a bit mucky for your struggling plants root systems. You need much more airation and faster drainage in your soil for those plants. Also, don't beat yourself up about the Ivy! Despite what many people think it is an extremely tricky/difficult plant to grow successfully indoors. Hang in there & good luck 👍

    I know everyone's homes are different but I wanted to tell you about my pilea peperomioides... it is HUGE and makes to many babies!! I've got them EVERYWHERE now hahaha I live in North Alabama and I keep my big mother plant in an east facing window as close to the window as possible without touching the leaves to the glass. When I think its dry and I mean bone dry! Zero moisture!! I wait another day or two and then take it outside and water thoroughly with distilled water or rain water and then I mix up a weak mixture of the liquid cactus and succulent food with distilled water or rain water and pour until the water runs out of the bottom. I leave it outside in the shade under a covered porch for an hour or two and then take it back to the window. I have to turn it 1/4 everyday to keep it's perfect round shape but it's worth it because she is gorgeous! She is bigger than any I've ever seen but I've had her for around 3 years. Good luck and I hope this helps you with that plant 🌿🌿🌱🌿🌿

      @@ErikaLodes Ivey's are truly meant to be outdoor plants and I think they come with spider mites... They're on there for a free ride and unless you wash them off all the time in the shower and they're in a high humidity place they just can't hack it in our homes so it's nothing you're doing wrong so they're not worth the hassle. If you want something nice and green to take their place the spring I'm going to be selling my cuttings That Grew all over the place and my outdoor pots. It's cuttings of variegated transiscanthia that for some reason turn green! I brought in as many cuttings as I could this winter before they froze and they are much more healthier and much larger leafed than a variegated green and white plant. In fact I came from my green and white plant it just turned green. I think they would do well as a living wall or cascading down I guess I should do a video on them. @L W congratulations on helping that overwatered orchid. I learned a lot in the last three years about phalaenopsis orchids and other orchids from UA-cam videos. In fact one person who was helping me suggested I start my own UA-cam channel. So I started it with my orchids of which I now have 72 at last count along with my hundreds of houseplants! I think all I do is water and take care of these guys luckily I'm retired otherwise they'd be more than neglected. I always transplant my new orchids into new bark because you don't know how old the bark they're growing in or the Moss is. I prefer bark because orchids like to dry out and Moss tends to hold too much water. But if your orchid is originally in Moss and you switch to bark what you should it takes time for it to grow roots that can be compatible with bark. An orchid only needs to be watered once a week or every 10 days if in bark and maybe even can go longer if in Moss. I soaked mine in a nutrient solution for about an hour and besides changing the media and giving them new bark I also put them in a clay pot. That helps them to dry out and not be overwatered. I have a UA-cam channel if you're interested deals with my orchids and with my houseplants just click on the blue K or put my name Kathleen Murphy and the word house plants or orchids in the UA-cam search engine and you'll find me

    i had a small red maranta come from amazon. it had 4 stems. 3 died and fell off. ONE stem lived and it had 4 leaves. all of those leaves fell off dead after 2 weeks. . . . I was SO sad! it was my first maranta. I loved that damn plant and I wanted it to LIVE! SO I switched it to distilled water and misted it 4x a day. I put it in different spots in the house until it seemed right and. .. .. . it lived! then after another couple of weeks it popped out a tiny leaf stick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i did a happy dance. cut to a year later. SLOWLY this plant has put out 12 leaves now on one long weirdy vine in a bright pink pot I wanted to have a little bushy plant. I LOVE this little survivor. I will NOT cut it. I don't want to hurt it and right now it is doing so well! today it had leaf number 13 about to uncurl and open fully any day and I am so glad this little plant survived!

      @@Sarah-xg1vd That botanist is not correct. Did the botanist own any of the plants that are damaged by tap water? I have a feeling you repot every new plant and that really stresses those plants out. They grew in a greenhouse in perfect conditions Perfect Light perfect watering perfect soil then they're shipped in a box to some store and who knows how long they stay in that box before they're put out on display! Then they're not watered as frequently as in the greenhouse plus the fact that they're in a different environment then you take them home and now they're in there fourth environment in a short or long. Of time depending on how long they sat on the Shelf at the store. So now they got to get used to your house and your environment and then you take their blanket away or their blankie away which is the soil their potted in and the pot there potted in and now you just utterly put the 1000% in a new environment now not only the leaves of the plant have to adapt to a new environment but now you're making the roots and dab to a new environment. Some plants like golden pothos it wouldn't matter what you did to them practically there almost indestructible but these other plants or not. A p i l e a has a thick leaf and a thick stem so it probably needs to dry out the top enter soul of the soil before you water again. It also looks like it's in too big of a pot and when you put a plant in a pot that's too big for it it doesn't have Roots going through all of that soil so the bottom part of the pot it has soil in never dries out because there aren't any roots to dry it out. My suggestion for that plant is to put it in a smaller pot and let it dry out stick your finger down in the pot and if it's still moist don't water it. If you like the look of The Clay Pot just put the plastic Nursery pot down inside it. I have plants that are in their original Nursery pot their original soil and they have been there for maybe four or five years if not longer. As long as they are fertilized every once in awhile and given nutrients easiest thing is to buy those plants sticks and put in the pot unless you're repotting then you can use osmocote. These plants are healthy I have caladiums I bought last year that were on sale at the nursery left them in their pots the rest of the summer brought them in the house let them go dormant like they wanted to. I brought them outside this spring and they're beautiful and they're still in the same soil the same Nursery pot they were in last year. If you think about plants outside You Don't Go Changing the soil around their Roots all the time you leave them alone and just give them some food. I'm 70 years old and I've had plants ever since I was a little kid so hopefully you won't give up on those plants. I am still learning and we'll learn till the day I die good luck sweetheart

    My pilea is massive and many babies. My babies are having babies. I have her in a terracotta pot as well as my watermelon peperomia. They both like to be in smaller pots especially the watermelon. Make sure you have well draining soil and put it in a smaller pot. Put one tablespoon Epsom salt to one gallon distilled water and water once or twice with that. It will help repair root damage if they are salvageable. They both appreciate bright bright indirect light. And I allow them both to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Never be ashamed of losing a plant. It happens to all of us. Truly. I am not an indoor plant grower, but do work with bonsai, I have been trying lots of different soils over the past few years, and at one point used cacti soil and found most are very heavy and kind of go hard between watering. Could be a reason why you may be having trouble with some plants, and the same can be said for a lot of fibrous organic soils, like peat or coco coir, things like can hold so much moisture and if you are a heavy waterier that will not help. You may want to try some more inorganic in your soil mixes to help with drainage. To be honest really the best advice I have learnt in bonsai, is mistakes are the only way to learn about a plant, being to shy to work with your plant can sometimes hurt it more. Also I learned, have too many plants so you don't have enough time to kill them with kindness. Keep up the great work and never give up on what you love, keep up the great content.

      Maria on Maria's Garden Channel on UA-cam who lives in Punta Gorda Florida grows all her own succulents and she said the soil needs to drain fast and she hates Miracle-Gro Cactus soil. I think she adds Pine Box made by the castle company sold at Lowe's added to her soil so it drains faster she even did an experiment on one of her videos where she did three different potting mixes and showed how quickly they drained 1 even after the first watering never really let go of the water to drain out and there was still water sitting on top of the pot so the cactus soil that sold isn't very good it needs to drain and I think she uses a lot of perlite in her mix so it drains faster to but perlite also absorbs water I think so anyhow good luck with your bonsai I've never tried that I have a lot of house plants and have my own UA-cam channel but never tried Bonsai I was afraid I'd kill them

Just for different soil in bonsai, try looking at herons bonsai with peter Chan he is big in the bonsai community, or Nigel Saunders. everyone has there opinion on soil what to use or not to use, however just really experiment and find your own mix that works for you. In Australia it is hot and dry or hot and humid most of the time, so had to adapt what I did and do for my plants and the soil I use. Keep up the great work and I know you will be fantastic with all the plants you have and want to have.

    According to Maria's Garden on UA-cam if you use Miracle-Gro Cactus soil she says it's trash. She has a mixture she uses on her Channel and it's lots of perlite some orchid bark I believe only she calls it pine bark and Coco coir or peat moss and potting soil I don't know the exact percentages but she says most Cactus oils are not very good so that could be your problem with that plant

    I’ve also had trouble with peperomia. I wouldn’t repot the pilea. They do like to be a bit root bound. Plus they get fussy when their roots are disturbed. I think that’s how I ended up killing my first pilea. Good luck with the watermelon peperomia. I’m trying to bring mine back as well. :/

    Hey erika, love your videos! Yeah I would advise u to avoid the clearance unless u spot a hidden like your fiddle leaf fig. Which u should repot bc there might be problems underneath. Not to worry u. I struggled with my house plants too. My first correction was the soil mix bc I over watered mine. So I would recommend a succulent soil mix such as miracle grow bag. Worked for me. I've used it on snake plants, pothos, dracaena, kalanchoe, peperomia, & croton. Good luck!

    It could very well be the soil you’re using. Usually when people say thoroughly water they have a very well draining soil. In my experience I found perlite and a heavy soil like Miracle Gro won’t be enough aeration. I lost a lot of plants this way because of thoroughly watering in that soil mixture. I changed to either Fox Farm (which has so many more nutrients) or like Happy Frog. I still add perlite and orchid bark etc, but I find the actual soil dries much more quickly and doesn’t compact the way other soils do 👍 good luck ☺️✌️

    I have almost all of this peperomias and piela that you are showing... they need small enough pot to not overwater it and gradually getting into bigger ones. If you have a chance, it is best to bottom water them. People say that they dont need a lot of light, but I think if you want them to thirve they do. For ruby cascade and pilea, also for watermelon it is importnat that they receive some light on the top of their soil. Mine get even a bit of sunshine rays and they do very well. I put in soil media a looooot of perlite, because they have very fragile roots and it can cause root rot very quick if they dont have that airy soil mix. My sister taught me that for pilea you have to have a small pot, but big enough so thay can start making babies. Hope something helped.

    Baby Pileas will not put out pups. It has to be older!
    You might need to put the Pilea in a more well draining soil. Maybe one with a bit of 30% orchid bark, 30% perlite, 40% soil.
    I find pileas can be overwatered easily. Once the plant is big, it’ll put out pups!

    I got my pilea back in January and have been struggling with it ever since. It has just been dropping leaves constantly. There was one point it was growing leaves but that didn’t last long. I just repotted it in a smaller terra-cotta so hopefully that will help! I’ve had two peps and they are barely staying alive they were doing so well at one point but then just started dying off. Also same with Ivy’s. I had one years ago that was beautiful and so full with trailing leaves and then outta nowhere just died and from then on I couldn’t keep one alive. I’ve bought so many since then and they always die. But watching your video on plants to rescue that inspired me to go out and see what was on clearance. I did find an ivy for $1 that I bought so let’s hope I can keep that alive at work!

    I think one of the things is you are buying all these popular plants that you see on UA-cam and Instagram and you don't have enough experience taking care of the easy plants like pothos and philodendron and some of those plants to get a good feel and success growing your plants I'm glad to see you're researching everything that's really good and hopefully you're watching lots of videos on UA-cam but you're a student so you're stuck in school all day! But everyday you're learning by observing your plants so don't be hard on yourself all of us have had plants that have died in our care because we didn't know how to take care of them. I think early on back in the seventies I may have bought some pepperoni M and they died so I haven't had much experience with them they are very beautiful and you see them in Lowe's and Home Depot and Walmart and everywhere but I've had better success with my pothos as a starter plant they can take a lot of neglect or inexperience and they'll still grow for you I just had one I forgot to take outside because it was up on top of my kitchen cabinets and it's a beautiful lime green pothos and I took cuttings off of it and watered the little bit that was left in the soil and they're all doing fine. I bought a neglected philodendron the heart leaf green one on a moss pole that was reduced to $3 because they never watered it brought it home put it in a bucket of water there's only a couple inches of water in there and the Moss pole and it's been that way for 10 days or so and it's growing so they're very forgiving plants. Sometimes it's good to just get one of a kind of plant you're not used to and be successful with that so you can concentrate on it and feel good about how it grew for you. You're so lucky you have a mom and a family who supports you and your love of plants. My mother loved plants and she passed that on to me and my dad also love them and so did my mother's family so it's in our genes I guess and you'll get there and you look back when you're 70 years old and say why was I worried about my plants look at how many plants I have now and I can grow almost anything so you'll get there sweetheart take care and get some books out of the library maybe cuz you can't find everything on the internet

  • @soapsniffer
    @soapsniffer 4 роки тому

    I have a Ruby Cascade too, and I think yours died because of the pot it came with. Those plastic planters keep the soil wet foooreveeer, its horrible! I've found that a shallow unglazed terra cotta pot is the best- that peperomia has a super shallow and very fine root sytem so it has to dry quickly or it just dissolves. If you fill the bottom of the planter with perlite and then just have soil like 2 inches deep around the roots that seems to work really well. My friend had one that died the same way yours did and she left it in the plastic hanger too. They like humidity as well, although thats less important than the watering itself. I soak mine and then let it completely dry before watering again. Its been growing so much I had to hang it from the ceiling to keep it from tangling into everything. You should definitely go for it again because it was totally the planter's fault, not you!

Makes a world of difference! Before this change, I killed my Pilea and Watermelon Peperomia also. I still have struggles with a few plants (ZZ Raven is one) but also have over 100 that are healthy and growing. Focus on your successes not failures! You are doing great! Take the leaves off of the watermelon peperomia that are like drooping and see if you can't propagate them in some water. They will grow little plants at the tip of the stem. I think that one's being over-watered also maybe you should buy a water meter a moisture meter whatever they're called. I've never bought one because I judge by how the pot feels is it heavy it doesn't need water if it's light it needs water and that works for most plants that I have also I look at the soil and see if it's dried out or I feel it with my finger to see how dry it is it's sort of like sticking a toothpick in it cake your baking if the toothpick comes out dry the cakes done so if your finger comes out dry the plant needs watered it's done using up all the water. But there are some plants that don't like to dry out and there are some plants that you like to dry out so you need to figure it out and that'll happen over time

    it's kinda end of growing season in north hemisphere, so probably you need to focus on keeping your plants alive and wait for the end of winter for new growth? and have you checked out info on beneficial bacteria and fungus? discounted plants can carry some disease and it can be introdused to other plants. quarantine is good, but sometimes a plant need extra help.
    my hedera ivy story is very sad. it came to my home as a big beautiful lush plant and died the next winter. central heating dries the hell out of the air here. it was looong ago, though. now i found senecio macroglossus, the plant looks really like ivy. i hope it survives delivery well, i never ordered plants online before.

I have a pilea pepermoities and I potted a couple of the baby’s in a plastic pot and the other in a ceramic pot and they are both doing better than the mother that’s in a terra-cotta pot. And for mine, they like a little bit more water than the videos I’ve watched for them and they like bright light, even on a west or south window sill. Most of my peperomias like to stay moist. Try wick watering your watermelon peperomia. Do you have a philodendron birkin?

    Sometimes you can’t always save plants especially on clearance. Besides it’s an ivy lol
    Try having your pilea outside in a shaded area. Mine looked dead I put it out on the porch & leaves are coming back, looks really sad but maybe I’ll post a pic on insta
    Ruby cascade mine did the same thing & I had taken cuttings & the cuttings have taken off but the mother plant died 🤷🏻‍♀️
    Watermelon peperomia, play with its light, let it dry then water. I have mine in the north west window close to my aero garden.
    The peperomia I don’t give a lot of light it’s also in my north west window. I let it dry & water when it’s dry or wilting.
    My peperomia hope I ignore its next to my watermelon peperomia & I don’t water them until they dry.
    Sometimes too much love hurts 💚🌿

    I've found that keeping ivy indoors is quite hopeless. I would just enjoy the ones outdoors if I were you. Or you could try and get hold of a natal ivy (Senecio macroglossus). While the natal ivy is not actually related to ivy, its leaves do resemble ivy leaves a lot. It does need a bit more light than the actual ivy and it is very drought tolerant.
    My own experience of Pilea peperomioides is that they can be a bit squeamish. I have one and it is doing alright, but sometimes it does put out leaves that are a bit misshaped and some of the older leaves get a bit dotted (discoloured spots). So I'm still trying to figure it out.
    But there are a couple of things I've learnt about them:
    They are quite fast growers, so I think cactus soil may be a bit too poor for them. I would try a regular houseplant soil mixed with much perlite or pumice. I fertilise mine often (low dosage with almost every watering).
    They are much more sensitive to overwatering than underwatering.
    I think an east-facing window is fine.
    I have two watermelon peperomias and I'm still trying to understand them. But they also need a well drained soil and are sensitive to overwatering. I think all of the plants you're struggling with would do much better in a more well drained potting mix.

  • @omaam1005
    @omaam1005 5 років тому

    Hi Princess! One thing I want to say is when you re pot any plant make sure you WASH the pot. Don't put any plant in a pot from another plant without washing the pot. It gives the plant a fighting chance against fungus or bacteria. 2nd, try and put all plants in BRIGHT INDIRECT LIGHT. Even if it tolerates low light, put it in BRIGHT INDIRECT LIGHT. YOU MUST CHECK SOIL BEFORE WATERING. I believe in using my finger. Make sure your hand is clean. Don't want to transfer any bacteria to soil. Stick finger as far down as you can in a couple of places to get a feel for water need. Pay close attention to plants that DO NOT like to dry out completely. For example, Coleus, Croton, Fittonia, Pilea don't like to dry completely. Let them almost dry meaning soil is crumbly and not far from being dry. Then you can water these kind.
    Erika, plants must be treated like young babies and children. Especially during very hot seasons, CHECK THEM EVERY DAY by looking at them and seeing if any need attention, looking at the soil to see if its completely dry or not. When weather is cooler, you can check plants less.
    TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE. If you feel like it's too much work and time for plants, that's ok, definitely don't grow your plant size until you are ready to really plow into them for the long haul. Stick with a small group you really love and learn them well. Never buy a plant cause it's popular, or you THINK YOU LIKE IT. If it's not a I GOTTA HAVE IT CAUSE I LOVE IT VIBE, JUST DON'T GET IT. Don't buy plants you absolutely don't have the conditions for. Always stay on top of your plant homework. I want you to really enjoy plant life. It should be freeing and beautiful to your soul. GENESIS 2:5-16 Have a blessed fun one young Lady.

      Oma Am thank you for your advice! I do a lot of that “I love this plant i want to buy it” as you can see for pileas that was a mistake & I have learned 😊 only buying plants that I can care for properly

    Same with my pilea, leaves kept falling and I was freaking out because I paid more than I normally would a couple of years ago. I put it on my west window ledge and she is doing great now

    Do you have a moisture meter?? That would help tell you if the plants are dry or something else. Do you fertilize? Do the plants get enough light!? Your varigated peperomia looks just like it should...
    And...sometimes a discount plant should be overlooked. Everybody kills a plant or two...If they say otherwise, they’re fibbing.

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  5 років тому

      Patricia Lisowski I have a moisture meter & fertilize & all that I don’t know what’s going on w these babies 😬 im gonna repot w new soil & only bottom water noww. I’m glad to hear my variegated pep looks fine though!
      You’re right about the discount plants, I don’t know why I thought the ivy was such a steal. It really wasnt 🤦🏼‍♀️

    Don't feel bad at all, especially about the Ivy. I tried growing one and failed horribly. Threw it outside along the edge of my yard and the next year it was GROWING in the bushes, crazy.

    I was struggling with my watermelon peperomia too! What worked for me was changing it from a terracotta pot it into a plastic one and it's doing better because the leaves are getting bigger and it's flowering which was very exciting. :-D

      I’m so happy yours is doing better!!! I always take flowering to mean the plant is super happy 💚 my pep probably just needs more attention I don’t think I’ve been giving it enough water 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m gonna try my best to help it flourish though!

    I would say that you should try bottom watering because it looks like you leave water on the leaves when you water them and they rot after they sit in water.

    Plants do have a life of their own to lead as well you know. You can't just expect them to be running around, catering for your needs all of their life....wow over thousand views in one day, people really relate to your vids, looks like we are all on the same rollercoaster with our plants, who said plants really rule the world, maybe Attenborough.

      Anna Hutcherson ohhh nooo 😩😩 my ruby cascade & pilea are history rip. I had the exact same moment throwing away the last sad piece!!
      I bought a new pilea & it’s doing good so far. I think I overwatered the one in this video when I first got it & the roots weren’t able to recover. If I could do it over again, I would just try to propagate it. Captain hindsight strikes again lol

    Try watering your peperomias like once a month, and I notice they don’t do well in pots that hold a lot of moisture like ceramic so I keep those in terra-cotta pots,

    Yes it’s so sad when your plants don’t respond to your care. This is what I do (might not work for you 😐) For you Pilea Peperomoids, you need to let it dry out, and just water it a little bit, do not soak it thru. Pretty much the same for all your Pileas. My brand new Ruby Cascade, got knocked over by my kitty, 😼 had to totally try to repot it, struggled with it because a lot of the roots were already rotten 😮 I saved as much as I could, luckily it has survived, its much smaller. Yes, Peperomia roots are really fragile, you look at it wrong, it dies. My Hope has done the same as yours, I had to Sprigs, one totally died on me, the other is okay 🤞🏼. No you can save your Ruby cascade, repot it into 1/2 cactus soil 1/2 potting mix. You might have to fashion bobby pins to hold the strands down into the soil, you will need to keep it slightly damp for the roots to sprout. Mine successfully rooted, even the longer strands. Keep on trying 😇. Some plants are just not worth saving, if they give you so much grief, then toss it. Sometimes I think it is already sickly when you buy a plant, I buy the same plant from a totally different grower just to see, is it my care that sucks or what 🤷🏻‍♀️. I have re-purchased new plants and they thrived. Who knows. One thing I do know, I can not grow Calathea’s in my home, I can not produce enough humidity to keep it happy. I live in central Cali, so it’s like a dry desert 🌵 here. The a/c is on 24/7, so my plants need to be able to tolerate that or else I just don’t buy them, which is heartbreaking 💔, I love those exotic looking tropicals, or Chinese Evergreens, tried that, nope 👎🏼☠️. Anyways, I hope you are going keep trying. Always best to re-pot in fresh new soil. Lightly water. Happy Planting 💜🌺🌸
