It's one of my favorites too. You are pretty much right there, conflict seen through the eyes of a child.
From the 2019 Macro album, it's written about the fighting in 2014, but sadly it still applies today. They still have family in Ukraine that they can't go visit.
Musically it's a great song, love how low she gets at the end. Good news is they have finished recording for a new album, haven't heard yet when we might get a new song, or when the album will come out.
Sure, put Jinjer in the poll again, "Vortex" from the 2021 Wallflowers is another that she gets very low on.

Lyrically this song certainly tackles a very major issue, the horrors of war in their country and really everywhere. It’s awful no matter where you go. And the sheer depth of her growls at the end are incredible. She really has an amazingly strong voice.

Basically, this is a song against Putin and Russia, which partially invaded the outskirts of Ukraine in 2014, but it wasn't until 2022 that a real war broke out with the massive attack on Ukraine, with the entire Russian war machine. Since Tatiana and the rest of the band come from Donetsk or the surrounding area and Donetsk is also part of this fringe area, this accusation and demand against Putin and Russia can definitely be seen as personal. The pain, the anger, the pain and all the emotions that were packed into this song were already the accusatory words of those personally affected when it was written, which makes this song more important and expressive and even greater.

If you didn't watch the whole 'From Nothing' video, there's four songs they performed throughout the little documentary in between the talking. They're performed in a small live setting, and it's cool to hear Tatiana's vocals in a more 'intimate' setting.

Firstly, Nikki, you look find with or without your eye makeup.
Thank you for getting back to Jinjer, this was written about the 2015 invasion of the part of the Ukraine that they're from, they had to move to Kiev to escape it, of course things got worse when the main invasion happened later.
Tracks which I recommend by them are:
"Pit of Consciousness" and "On the Top" both live in Kiev,
"Call Me a Symbol" the official music video,
"Just Another" official live music video,
"Vortex" the official music video (I can't remember if you've done this already or not).
There are many more but these are good ones to continue with.

You look fine. You are correct, this is their first refugee experience imagined through the eyes of a child. The three masked characters are from a Ukrainian children fable. The war in Ukraine has been going on far longer than most people know. To continue your Jinjer journey I recommend reacting to "Bad Water" (Live, Napalm Records) and then take a little detour to Tatiana's collaboration with 12 Foot Ninja.

Another great song from Jinjer, sadly just as applicable to today as it was then; I hate what’s going on it’s just so pointless!
Tatiana and her lyrics and vocals are always meaningful and interesting, she has a great talent, it’s difficult to believe how much of an introvert she is! I really like the dissonance between the guitar, bass and vocals in it, it reflects the video very well!
As always your review and analysis was on point and well put! I’m not sure whether you’ve done any of their older stuff, maybe it would be interesting! I’m thinking of Cloud factory, Sit stay roll over, Scissors and Exposed as a liar.
Edit: nice change to see Nicky naturelle, shame it’s cos your eyes are poorly though! Hope they get better soon 🌹

I appreciate that you were open to experiencing this piece emotionally - that's a big part of the point of art, after all. It's a powerful piece, and it would be a shame to watch it the way one watches an advertisement or something.
The characters in attendance at Tati's psychotic jazzy tea party are very much up for interpretation. On an earlier reaction to this song, J.F. Fisher wrote "I think the symbolism of the tea party is that the civilian rabbit has to sit down to tea with the conquering dog who says he'll protect the rabbit from the slain cat, but the rabbit is still afraid because dogs eat rabbits too." I like that interpretation, & I think it fits in well with the fact that Tatiana depicts the extreme right wing ultra-nationalist militias who played a leading role early in the armed resistance to the Russian-backed separatist militias in eastern Ukraine (starting in 2014) as dogs in her anti-fascist rant "Sit, Stay, Roll Over". (Tatiana plainly despised both sides in that conflict.) You'll note that by the end of the tea party, all 3 are laid out on the floor.
"Sit, Stay, Roll Over" & "Home Back" are 2/3rds of a trilogy of Jinjer songs which are direct reactions against the 2014 outbreak of armed conflict, the 3rd being "When Two Empires Collide", which is about the fact that the Ukrainian people are victims of an imperial power struggle between Russia & the US. All 3 songs are very powerful, & are musically highly distinct from each other.
I recommend that you react to "Sit, Stay, Roll Over" official music video. "When Two Empires Collide" is also a great song, but it doesn't have an official video. However, there's a cool fan-made lyric video for the song with footage from war-ravaged Ukraine intercut with footage of a live performance of the song at a small venue. Great comment. Yes, Ukraine is victim of the power struggle between empires. I'd like to think one of those empires has somewhat woken up and come to their aid. As voters we have some control over these things.

@ericpeterson7512 Unfortunately, I think the US is currently acting exactly in line with its post-WW2, and especially post-Soviet Union, imperial attitude. In the case of Ukraine, she's conducting a proxy war against Russia intended to weaken Russia by supplying weapons to Ukrainians who are fighting for independence. The US could have prevented Russia's 2022 invasion by agreeing to stop NATO expansion, but wasn't willing to do so. Even after Ukraine largely succeeded in beating back Russia's first major offensive, many lives could have been saved in eastern Ukraine by agreeing to halt NATO expansion, but the US was unwilling to do so. So, Ukraine is still *precisely* in the middle of an imperial power struggle.
Biden is very much engulfed in the foreign policy "blob" with its neocon groupthink and military industrial complex corruption, and was always going to go along with the imperialist status quo. Maybe Harris, who is a generation younger and a newcomer to foreign policy, can bring some positive change. It's the merest sliver of hope.
The US, as a chief architect of the UN framework and international law, had an enormous opportunity after WW2 to change the global universe of international relations into something that would merit the term "liberal international order", which would have been a great improvement over the imperial power struggle that preceded it. Instead, she chose to cynically use the international institutions she created to advance her own imperial interests, thereby undermining those institutions and her own credibility, with tragic results for her own people, and especially for the people around ghe world with the misfortune of having been born in an area deemed to be of "strategic value". I fear that she won't take international law and institutions seriously until she learns the hard way, perhaps at the hands of Russia or, more likely, China, that she will never again have global hegemony, and therefore has no choice but to subordinate herself to an international order. I just hope that by then, that international order isn't some other hegemon's plaything.
I recommend to you Jeffery Sach's work on foreign policy. He's seen the inner workings up close.

@ericpeterson7512 Let me just be clear that I *do not* want the US to abandon Ukraine to Russia's whims. But I *do* want her to quit using Ukrainians as cannon fodder in her imperial chessgame with Russia, and turn toward trying to find a way to a just peace that respects both Russian security and Ukrainian independence. I'm not sure that it isn't too late.

Watching this while Russia is making the next massive rocket attack. The scariest thing in the song is when a home "is not the shelter anymore". We're not powerless. There is something we can do. As Americans, we can affect the outcome and bring an end to this war. Vote. It's that simple. One party will end aid to Ukraine, and give all the sanctioned oligarch money back to Russia with an apology. One will not. One likes Putin. One does not. It's really that simple. I will not support any candidate who does not support Ukraine. Period.

Thank you, Nikki, I love Home Back! Not only for the fantastic music and vocals, but because for me, it hits me emotionally every time. It makes me angry and sad for two reasons: both the call against war (angry at the US warmongers who caused the conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine and won't let either end, if this statement makes anyone balk, they should read a book by former US State Dept official William Blum, "Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventions Since WWII", original title, "How Jimmy Carter and I started Al Qaeda"), and also connecting the dots that all of these US backed coups and proxy wars have intentionally prevented global cooperation to address climate collapse (in addition to the war profiteering, fear of a good example and attempts at resource monopolies), so wanting our Home Back is an idea not only for all the war refugees but also for all life on earth about to lose our home because of US war profiteering ("don't you leave us homeless"). Thank you for reacting to it!
More of the history behind it: in 2014 was the US backed coup led by Ukrainian fascists (Azov Battalion, Banderites, etc) that started a civil war (or just pogroms) where for eight years the Ukrainian military, led by Ukrainian fascists, killed ten to fourteen thousand Russian speaking Ukrainians in the Donbas region including Donetsk (where Jinjer formed). The "fire in the hole" lyric in this song is about the Ukrainian military killing Russian speaking Ukrainians. You can find an old video of Tatiana saying she's afraid her government will shoot her. That's what Jinjer had to flee when they left the Donbas region to be an essentially homeless/refugee band on tour for years on end. Russia got involved in 2022 (after eight years of trying to use diplomacy to resolve the aggression by the US) to stop the US from handing nuclear weapons to the US backed fascists in Ukraine. The CIA and its cutout NED have always and continue to fund, arm and train fascists like this all over the world for the express purpose of staging coups like the one in Ukraine in 2014.
Azov Battalion, Right Sector and others were placed in the Donbas to kill as many Russian speaking Ukrainians as they could get away with, with multiple failed attempts to blame Russia for these murders. The murders were taking place in the Donbas, which is why Jinjer had to flee that part of Ukraine (they had to decide between staying and being unable to tour or leaving family and friends to tour and being unable to return more than once per year).
Sadly, I see many fellow Jinjer fans (and others) caught up by the US war profiteering propaganda that makes them think Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014. This is utterly false. They sometimes point to Crimea. Crimea would have been more difficult for those US backed Ukrainian fascist groups, because there were historic reasons that Russia already had military bases in Crimea, none were added after the 2014 US backed coup, which is when the people in Crimea voted to leave Ukraine because they did not recognize the US backed coup regime which was de facto run by the US backed Ukrainian fascists (you can find video of those fascists pointing guns at the Ukrainian parliament).
A friend of Jinjer's bassist Eugene was killed by Ukrainian fascists (not by Russians). When you listen to Jinjer's song Sit Stay Roll Over, take note that it has lyrics (by Eugene) directly quoting the mantra of some of these Ukrainian fascists, "one path, one past, one trust", which is then flipped in the lyrics to, "it's not one's path, it's not one's past, it's not one's trust, it's not MY path, it's not MY past, it's NOT MY TRUST!" Make sure if you get any part of that song stuck in your head, it's the flipped part and not the fascist motto. At least 87 to 95% of the world (see UN votes, etc) does not believe the US war profiteering propaganda, I just hope that number keeps going up!
P.S. You look great either way!
Again, thank you for this reaction! ❤️🖤🤘

You tried to write something smart, but in the end you just crap a bunch of shit. This is some kind of mishmash of conspiracy theories and Russian propaganda narratives. I won’t say anything about the USA, I’m not an expert. But I live in Ukraine and I can know a little more about this than you do.
You claim that the United States is to blame for the war in Ukraine. How? Did they force Russia to attack Ukraine? Are they forcing Putin’s troops to bomb Ukrainian peaceful cities, train stations with people, shopping centers, hospitals? They probably forced the Russians to do this in Syria as well?
You wrote: “in 2014 there was a US-backed coup d’etat led by Ukrainian fascists” (Azov battalion, Banderaites, etc.).
      It's a lie!
A revolution took place in Ukraine, not a coup d'état (the Revolution of Dignity (Maidan) was supported not only by the United States, but also by many other countries). Nobody overthrew President Yanukovych; he remained the legitimate president until May 2014, that is, until the official new elections. But he himself refused to fulfill the duties of president and secretly left for Russia. The thesis of a “coup d’etat” is put forward only by Russian propaganda.
It is even more nonsense to say that Maidan was under the control of Bandera and the Azov battalion. Firstly, who are the “Banderaites”? These are the followers of Stepan Bandera, who fought for the independence of Ukraine against Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during the Second World War and right up to 1951. But Russian propaganda still scares its fellow citizens with the mythical “Banderaites.” And the Azov battalion was formed from Ukrainian volunteers much later than Maidan, in May 2014, already during the Russian invasion of Donbass. And the Azov battalion was never “fascist”, just like Bandera’s supporters. They are nationalists (not to be confused with Nazis), that is, people who fight for the national independence of their country.
You wrote: "who started a civil war (or simply pogroms), where over the course of eight years the Ukrainian military, under the leadership of Ukrainian fascists, killed from ten to fourteen thousand Russian-speaking Ukrainians in the Donbass,"
      Lie!
The war in Donbass did not start because of the Maidan. While there was a revolution in Kyiv, Russian troops invaded and occupied Ukrainian Crimea, and then Russia annexed Crimea. After this, under the leadership of Russian special forces, acts of separatism and terrorism were committed in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine. Ukraine was forced to announce a counter-terrorism operation. This escalated into the war in Donbass. But the separatists were just a cover for Russian troops, who both covertly and openly participated in this war. The Ukrainian military did not kill “Russian-speaking Ukrainians”; this is also Russian propaganda. Ukrainians fought for the integrity of their state against Russian troops and separatists.
Moreover, there are NO fascists in the Ukrainian government. Name me at least one Ukrainian politician with fascist views, or at least one fascist organization or party in Ukraine. There is none of them.
You wrote: "The words “fire in the hole” in this song are about how the Ukrainian military kills Russian-speaking Ukrainians"
      Lie!
No one ever said that these words meant exactly that. This is just your speculation.
You wrote: "You can find an old video of Tatyana saying she's afraid her government will shoot her. That's what Jinjer had to run from when they left Donbass to become essentially a homeless/refugee group."
      Lie!
Tatyana said in an interview that they fled Donbass when hostilities began there. But they fled to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine (wow!) and lived there for a long time, wrote music and gave concerts (somehow it doesn’t fit with your words, right?). And now they are touring the world as a UKRAINIAN rock band, and are ambassadors of Ukraine in the world.
I could continue to refute your nonsense word by word, but I'm already tired. Honestly, I have never seen such an amount of lies and manipulation in one text, even from Russian propagandists.
